The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

A new strain of Thiobacil/us ferrooxidans (SPK I) has been isolated which has a higher copper to iron release ratio (2.04) than the standard T ferrooxidans (CPBI) (1.12). The diminished iron oxidizing ability enables almost quantitative release of copper (93 per cent) from a chalcopyrite-rich concentrate without interference by iron reprecipitation. In a single batch leach, Bougainville copper concentrate yielded 9.3 grams/litre soluble copper from a 4 per cent w/v suspension in 100 days at 32°C.Solvent extraction recovery of soluble copper is recommended as a final step in a leaching process.

THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. What shall we say of a man who explains how to measure the depths of shafts to the hundredth part of an inch by means of short brass rods screwed together...

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. With the increase of new mine development in the past several years, many coal mines have decided to self- perform the design and construction for their slope development projects. The development process of determining the proper configuration is challenging, and a major economical consideration. Greenbrier Smokeless Minerals engineering staff and consultants, along with DSI/American Commercial, developed a support configuration that was best suited for their slope. The developmental process took into consideration the length of slope, depth of slope at the high-wall transition, economics of a single or multiple entries, waterproofing, stresses on the steel supports and lagging during the backfilling operation. This paper describes the developmental concept of using a single entry, side by side configuration, using steel ?Banjo String? supports with steel plank lagging, to develop a long term permanent installation in a cut and cover application.

A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, 'in the first place, 'prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In 'so doing' they determined much of the course of the State's development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Probably no other country or coutinent has so many rich deposits of various different minerals as Australia. Long ago in the days of my boyhood in the old land the marvellous discoveries of high percentage copper at Burra Burra, Peak Downs, Yudanamutana, and other mines, was one of the principal themes of conversation in mining circles whilst the specimens of malachite, azurite, etc, brought home by returning miners were the admiration of my boyish eyes.Later on the WalIaroo and Moonta mines still further helped to heighten the reputation of Australia as a copper-producing country. During the 21 years that the writer has been resident in the Australian colonies, other mineral deposits have sprung into prominence, and with a Mount Bischoff for tin, a Broken Hill for silver and lead, and a Mount Morgan for gold, Australia can now boast that it has had within its borders the leading mines of the world, in four different minerals, and still at least maintains that pre-eminence in gold, silver and tin. To the miner from the old land, Australian mining is at first a revelation and a wonder. In very many instances he looks in vain for the regular strike and dip of the veins he has been accustomed to'Smooth hanging and foot alls are often wanting. 'Huge irregular deposits, like those mentioned above, viz., Burra Burra, Mount Bischoff, Broken Hill, and Mount Morgan, are mysteries that will take time to fathom-if, indeed, they are ever thoroughly understood and in many a smaller deposit there is much to interest alike the professor in the college and the miner in the mine.

The irradiation-induced densification of pyrolytic carbon has been shown to take place by a simple first-order rate process. The values of the densification constant, kd, for isotropic carbons are 1.0 x 10-22, 1.4 X 10-22 and 2.8 X 10-22 (nut)-1 at irradiation temperatures of 520o, 670°, and 1000oC, respectively. The apparent activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of kd for isotropic carbons is about 0.2 ev. Estimates of the maximum stresses that develop in isotropic carbons owing to shrinkage onto an unyielding support show that stresses in excess of 15,000 psi may be avoided during irradiatian at 600" and 1000°C if the initial coating density is kept above 1.5 and 1.9 g per cu cw, respectively. If a carbon coating on an unyielding support is not completely isotropic, stresses may continue to build up at high neutron exposures after densification is complete because of continued anisotropic distortion. Stresses in excess of 15,000 psi from this source may be avoided during irradiation at 1000°C if' the Bacon anisotropy factor is kept below 1.3. A variety of applications of carbon and graphite in nuclear technology has stimulated numerous studies of the effect of neutron irradiation on these materials One of the most interesting problems associated with the use of carbons and graphites in the high fast neutron fluxes of nuclear reactors arises as a consequence of the neutron-induced dimensional changes that occur during irradiation. Energetic neutrons displace car- bon atoms from their lattice positions; and, depending on the temperature, the interstitials and vacancies produced migrate to form clusters, recombine, or are annihilated at dislocations or crystallite boundaries. The competition of various sinks for the point defects results in structure-sensitive bulk-dimensional changes that vary with temperature in a complicated way. This paper deals with the neutron-induced dimensional changes in turbostratic carbons that are being used as coatings on nuclear fuel particles. The year 1979 was a period of increased activity for the world's mineral industry, distinctly in contrast with 1978 when estimated world crude mineral output value declined slightly and most phases of the industry's activity were somewhat curtailed. In 1979, most major mineral commodities recorded significant gains in output, with a substantial number achieving new record highs; details on trade levels for 1979 were not available, but increases over those of 1978 were expected on the basis of partial data. Consumption of most commodities edged higher; in some cases the higher demand levels were met largely through draw-downs of stocks accumulated in recent years, while in other cases notable output increases were required to meet demand. Actually, 1978 was not a bad year for all elements of the mineral industry if changes in output levels of the various commodities are considered as a measure of performance. There were far more individual commodities registering production increases between 1977 and 1978 than registered declines, but some of those reported as declining were relatively major commodities (bauxite, aluminum, copper and zinc were notable), Moreover, the upturn in productive activity in 1978 was not matched by increases in profits. However, 1979 was unquestionably a year of renewed expansion efforts, although some commodity areas, most notably the steel industry component, were still experiencing difficulties.

Ante los problemas de sismicidad inducidos por el sistema de minado en la Compañía minera Milpo, se planteó una solución a través del sistema de monitoreo sísmico único, donde se da una distribución espacial de 20 censores entre uniaxiales y triaxiales distribuidos en 3 niveles de producción en el área de influencia de las actuales operaciones para así ubicar, cualificar y cuantificar el fenómeno a efectos de realizar los análisis interpretativos del caso. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema de monitoreo, cuyo software sísmico está diseñado para determinar nuevas estructuras formadas a partir de los eventos sísmicos pre existentes reactivadas por la sismicidad inducida, así como el desarrollo de planos de isocontornos que permiten la diferenciación entre zonas de altos y bajos esfuerzos.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. "Abstract This paper presents a ground improvement implementation case under a raft foundation of a local hospital. The selected ground improvement method is Wet Soil Mixing (WSM) technique. Soil mixing is increasingly applied to environmental applications and ground stabilization in geotechnical projects. In this technique, weak soil is mixed with cementitious slurry to improve the characteristics of the soil. The investigated case is one of the pioneering WSM ground improvement technique implementation cases in Turkey. The soil profile is mainly consisted of low plasticity clay. The effect of ground improvement is verified by a series of laboratory tests and four in-situ pile loading tests. The results of in-situ pile load tests on constructed soilcrete columns showed an acceptable factor of safety for the bearing capacity of the WSM columns. Measured bearing capacities in all four tested columns were nearly 20% higher than calculated values. In addition, a set of samples are obtained from the constructed columns and unconfined compression tests have been conducted. The laboratory test results indicate that the selected cementitious slurry has a sufficient efficiency to form the stabilizing columns.IntroductionIn the construction industry, stabilization of the soft ground by lime or cement stabilization is a widely used technique. In ground improvement systems deep mixing method (DMM) results in the same stabilization in deep portions of the soft soil profile by mixing cementitious slurry by means of mechanical augers. The pioneering cases of modern deep mixing application can be traced back to the year 1970 that was used for the stabilization of marine soils below the water level for the construction of harbor structures (Terashi et al., 1979). Nowadays, DMM is shown to be a proper and efficient method for the foundation of the structures and embankments on land. Some recent studies also reported that reasonable settlement reduction range in the stabilized soils under the foundation of structures (Archeewa et al., 2011). In addition to reduction of the structural settlement under service loads, deep mixing methods are also utilized when there is a concern with contaminated soil and groundwater or groundwater control (Andromalos and Bahner, 2003).Although, the DMM is shown to be a successful method in numerous studies for improvement of a wide range of soil types such as organics, fine-grained, and coarse grained material, it has some limitations (Archeewa et al. 2011, Jameson et al. 2010, Jelisic and Leppanen 2004, Lambrechts and Roy 1997, Meyersohn 2007, Miki and Nozu 2004, Olsson et al. 2008, O’Rourke and McGinn 2004, Stewart et al. 2004, Yang et al. 2011). High soil density and stiffness could damage deep mixing rigs. Engineering properties of the soilcrete columns changes based on the soil type, water content and other factors such as organic content of the available soil profile, so properties of the generated soilcrete should be verified by a set of rigorous testing procedures (Puppala et al. 2004).Based on the general classifications presented in the ground improvement literature, deep soil mixing method is divided into two main types of dry or wet mixing methods. In the dry and mixing methods compressed air and water are utilized as the binder transporter medium respectively (Moseley and Krisch, 2004). In addition, DMM methods can be categorized based on the employed mixing methods during the construction. In this study, the main aim is to present and elaborate on the selected method is known as Wet Speed Soil Mixing (WSSM)."

The purpose of this research was to determine how much, if any, improvement would be made by subjecting hydrogenated shale-oil naphtha to a catalytic reforming process. Preselected ranges of temperature and pressure within the commercial reforming ranges were chosen for investigation and other possible variables were held constant. All tests were made with a liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) of 3 volumes of liquid feed per volume of catalyst per hour (Vf/Vc/hr) and a hydrogen feed rate of 3,000 scf/bbl. Operating temperatures of 850°,875°, and 900° F were used at pressures of 200,400, and 600 psig. The greatest octane improvement in the naphtha was obtained at a temperature of 900° F and pressure of 200 psig. The reformed naphtha had a clear research octane number of 89, a liquid yield of 80 vol pct, and a yield-octane number of 71.1. The data indicate that a higher temperature could have produced a higher yield-octane number.

B. P. Thomson (South Aust. Dept. of Mines): Dr. A. B. Edwards presents in the published discussion on the above paper, his interpretation of the dolerite dyke-lode relationship as a major objection to the syngenetic origin for Broken Hill ore bodies to which Mr. Condon subscribes.Dr. Edwards claims that the dyke-lode relationships indicate clearly that the Broken Hill orebody was formed after the folding and regional metamorphism of the Willyama Series. Field evidence compels m:e to join with H. F. King (1958), in finding this conclusion unacceptable-as follows:(1) Broken Hill type mineralization, as defined by King and Thomson (1953), is clearly confined by the regional sillimanite isograd and does not extend into the lower temperature almandine and biotite zones as does the Thackaringa type mineralization.(2) In the Corruga area the writer has mapped a dolerite dyke apparently cutting a conformable quartz gahnite lode of the Broken Hill type (see Edwards 1958, p. 12).(3) At the Champion mine a similar lode is cut by a fine grained granite dyke.An alternative history of the dolerite dykes to that given by Stillwell & Edwards (1956, p. 26) appears possible. It has been suggested by the writer in an unpublished thesis, (Thomson 1955, p. 30), that the pyroxenite and serpentine plugs and dolerite dykes are rheomorphic end-products of a complex regional metamorphic and metasomatic process involving the formation of amphibolite and pegmatite. The analogy in composition between the dolerite and normal amphibolite is close (see Edwards 1958, Fig. 1, p. 22).

"The development of on-stream analyzers (OSA), such as those based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF), has been key to improve metallurgical performance of flotation processes. However, since these analyzers are shared between several streams, they typically provide grade measurements every about 10-15 minutes. In general, this frequency is too long compared to process dynamics and so, implementing an efficient feedback control strategy based on OSA can be difficult. In addition, due to the limited capacity of OSA systems, several important intermediate streams are not analysed, but could provide relevant information about the state of a flotation circuit.To overcome this problem, vision systems have been developed in the past to predict concentrate grade based on froth color – this could be very useful to control flotation performance between OSA measurements. However, applications reported in the literature typically use univariate summary statistics of the full red, blue, and green color distribution of froth images, while RGB images are truly multivariate. Although, in some cases, grade prediction was achieved with reasonable accuracy, one may, by using only summary statistics, miss important information about the state of the flotation process.This paper investigates the application of Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) concepts to flotation froth images. These techniques are based on multivariate statistical methods such as PCA and PLS, which have the ability to analyze large databases (such as digital images) and summarize the relevant information content of the data into a small number of latent variables, capturing the most important features of the images for concentrate grade prediction. The potential of application of these methods in the mineral processing industry is illustrated using a few industrial case studies."

In dealing with the pulverization and treatment of auriferous ores, it may be stated that there is not one system of treatment applicable to all classes. In the southern portion of New Zealand the ores generally contain free gold, with scarcely any impurity that is, it is found in an almost pure state, without any alloy, and its dissemination amongst the matrix is generally in tolerably coarse particles. The only difficulties the mill man has to contend with, are the economical concentration of pyrites, which in some of the lodes are rich in gold, and the extraction of the gold the pyrites contain. In some of the lodes there is what may be termed float gold, that is, the particles of the precious metal are so finely divided that it passes over the quicksilver tables, and, unless there are other appliances for saving it, this class of gold is entirely lost.Indeed it is only within the last five years that any attention has been given, in the southern portion of the colony, to saving the fine gold that has passed the amalgamating tables. In the North Island the ores are very complex there are scarcely two mines, although they may be adjoining each other, where the bullion is of the same character. On every field the gold is alloyed with silver', and in combination with other metals and mineral substances, such as copper, zinc, antimony, galenfl, iron, sulphur, arsenic, etc., and, in some instaaces, cinnabar, as in the case of the Champion lode at Tui Creek, Te Aroha. Ores of this class are extremly difficult to treat satisfactorily.
