Installation of initial tunnel support is often the most uncertain element of work in the design of, and a contractor bidding on, construction of a rock tunnel. The risks the construction contractor and owner assume are delineated to a great extent in the technical specifications portion of the contract documents. It is intended that this paper identify current practices for specifying initial tunnel support and the impacts each case has on the assignment of risks associated with providing the initial tunnel support. Examples of recently completed tunnel designs are given.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. This paper describes a method for the determination of the settlement of an individual H-bearing pile, based on the results of CPT-tests. As implied by the nature of the problem, no analysis performed on one pile can be regarded as generally valid for a whole piling foundation project because, even on one site, the pile behaviour varies from one pile to another. Consequently, no precise mathematical analysis has been established; the proposed procedure represents a simple model for the determination of the probable settlement behaviour of an H-pile under a compressive load. Prior to the settlement computations, the rupture load and the resistance distribution along the pile have to be determined. Since the method for the determination of the H-pile bearing capacity from the results of CPT tests has been described elsewhere (de Beer, 1971, 72; de Beer et al., 1982; Arbed, 1985), no details will be given in this paper. The proposed method is valid for both uniform and non-uniform H-piles. The computed results have been satisfactorely compared to the static loading tests performed on different types of piles in clayey and sandy soils during an ECSC research program on H-bearing piles (1983-1987).

Wettability measurements and laboratory waterflood tests were compared under a wide variety of conditions. Experiments were conducted with synthetic and natural crude oils, treated and untreated outcrop and oilfield sandstone cores, and synthetic brines with and without caustic, detergent, or phosphate additives. Measurements were made on equilibrated and unequilibrated systems at 77° and 150° F. Wettability was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines method from capillary pressure curves determined with a centrifuge. The waterflood data were fitted by empirical curves; the parameters of the curves characterize primary and subordinate production and also give the ultimate oil recovery. Results showed that wettability measurements at 77° F were useful predictors of recovery efficiency in waterflood tests run at both temperatures. Oil recovery in the early stages of waterflooding increased with increasing water wettability; however, the ultimate recovery was highest at a slightly oil-wet condition. The oil displaced at highest speed in the centrifuge was correlated with ultimate recovery in waterflood tests. Chemical additives to the brine sometimes lowered wettability and also sometimes improved waterflood recovery, but wettability and recovery were not correlated with additives present. The effect of additives on recovery in waterflooding was best seen in water-oil ratio curves.

This paper describes a series of small scale tests conducted to investigate the loading applied to a flat plate by the detonation of a cylindrical charge very close (between two and three charge radii from the center of the charge) to the structure. The testing used very small quantities of explosive (PETN): Two different series of tests were conducted. In the first test series, impulse loading on the target plate was investigated using three different sizes of charge. In the second series, pressure time profiles were determined. The charge size was 6 g or less. Impulse was found using high speed video of the target plate to determine its displacement as a function of time, from which initial plate velocity was obtained. Kolsky Bars, placed at the same distance from the charge as the target plate, were used to determine the free-field pressure time profile of the output of the charge at this distance. Two different types of target plates were used in the impulse study. One was just a plate while the other was a plate constrained with a steel frame.

The feasibility of using the ultrasonic wave attenuation method for measuring in-situ stress is examined theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical analyses show that for a given rock type the relation between stress and attenuation coefficient ratio can be approximated closely by second-order polynomials. Combining the elastic and statistical theories, the magnitude and direction of the existing principal stresses can be predicted by using the relations between stress and attenuation coefficient ratio obtained in the calibration of core specimens. Several experiments are conducted in the laboratory on two types of rock. The experimental study consists of two parts: the attenuation-coefficient measurements in core specimens under uniaxial stress and the attenuation coefficient measurements in boreholes drilled through blocks of sandstone and limestone subjected to uniaxial compressional stress. Compressional waves are used exclusively in the measurements.

In the paper a numerical modeling method is used for evaluation of a roof support system, which is commonly used in the US coal industry. The effectiveness of mechanical roof bolting with or without, header boards and steel straps are compared. This analysis takes into account the response of a shaly roof to changing environmental conditions in mines related to the seasonal changes in temperature and humidity of the intake air. Discussed are principles of roof support in coal mines and based on them a critical evaluation of header boards interaction with bolts and roof itself is carried out. Header boards create a soft inclusion within a much more stiffer system comprising bolt-rock. As an alternative to header boards, steel straps are analysed and corresponding results are presented. It is demonstrated that application of steel strap is beneficial from the stand point of stress distribution and maintaining tension on roof bolts. The laboratory investigations and modeling work previously undertaken by the authors, clearly indicate the detrimental effect of header boards on effectiveness of roof bolting. There are significant practical implications of the research considering that header boards are commonly used in mines. This practice has been probably originated from the wooden support used by mining in "pre-bolting era?, and it has stayed with coal mining based on tradition more than principles of engineering design. It is demonstrated that header board$ are detrimental and actually contribute to development of roof problems.

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

Standards methods covers the procedures for testing deep foundation to determine the force and velocity response to an impact of a pile driving hammer or similar device. The results of analysis generally include an assessment of pile integrity and the value of maximum dynamic stresses. But evaluation of static bearing capacity remains a matter of individual engineering judgment. A new 1D finite elements model has been developed for dynamic stresses and velocity analysis. Following an international benchmark of bearing capacity prediction organised by the Belgium Building Research Institute (BBRI), 12 piles in a site of fissured stiff tertiary clay tested in 1999, and 12 piles in a site of dense sand tested in 2001, comparison are proposed between analysis of dynamic tests and static tests results. A procedure is proposed to take in account the results of dynamic test for evaluation of bearing capacity.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. Ultraviolet-visible and infrared emission spectra from propagating methane-coal-dust-inhibitor mixtures have been obtained in a 0.2-by 0.2¬by 5.3-m vertical duct over a range of flame speeds from 2 to 100 m/sec. Results serve as a basis for the design and evaluation of thermal radiation detectors for triggered barriers that suppress ongoing mine explosions. Of particular significance is the large continua superimposed on the methane-air spectra when small amounts of coal dust are present and the variation of emissivity with infrared (IR) wavelength in dust flames. In conjunction with the spectral measurements, studies of flame speed, particle size, gas sampling plus thermodynamics, and dust sampling are presented and discussed in order to gain insight into the more fundamental aspects of propagating explosions. Sampling results have shown that only a near-stoichiometric amount of dust is consumed in the flames studied even though initial concentrations are five times stoichiometric. Difficulty in propagating coal-dust inhibitor flames of realistic mine characteristics in a cold-walled laboratory duct has been encountered. A simplified analysis of the flame zone utilizing spectral and sampling results indicates that the stability of slowly propagating flames is more dependent upon thermal radiation than upon convection losses to the walls. It is predicted that thermal radiation losses will make any measurements of coal dust burning velocities, "quenching diameters," or flammability limits more apparatus dependent than those corresponding to gaseous fuels.

The flotation of fine coal (minus 0.5 mm) often requires the addition of an insoluble hydrocarbon collector to apparently promote the adhesion of coal particles to air bubbles. A series of experiments was conducted using a radiotracer and narrow size fractions of clean coal to determine the effect of particle size distribution, collector addition rate, desliming of feed and emuIisification of collector on the distribution of collector between the different size fractions. The concentration of collector per gram of each size fraction was found to be approximately proportional to (average particle size)-2 except if the collector was emulsified prior to addition, the dependence altered to approximately (average particle size)-1. Mechanistic consequences are discussed.

"The increased costs of exploration and drilling of new oil fields and the continued success of water flooding in nearly depleted oil fields have created a demand for information on the results obtained from individual projects. The Bureau of Mines has published several reports concerning water-flood activity in the Midcontinent area and at the request of the industry has continued to collect and disseminate this information. This report was written in response to these requests. It describes in detail the water-flooding projects in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami Counties, Kans., and includes methods of water treating and the results obtained. The production histories of each county and many water-flood projects are shown graphically from the date of the first development. Maps of most of the major projects, showing their status as of January 1, 1953 are presented also.The practice of injecting water to stimulate oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935, and the first water-flooding project authorized in this four-county area was initiated by the Texas Co. in December 1935 in Linn County. Forty-nine projects2/ initiated in the area to January 1953 are estimated to have recovered approximately 10 million barrels of oil that would not have been produced by methods used previously. About 7,900 productive acres had been, or are, flooded by these projects, and approximately 136 million barrels of water had been injected.These four counties in the eastern Kansas shallow production area3/ were an important factor in the early history of the Kansas oil and gas industry. This position has been maintained from the very beginning through the early period of vacuum and air injection and into the era of water flooding. The location of the area and the relative position of the four counties and water-flooding areas in each are shown in figure 1.The first drilling for oil in this area in 1860 resulted from investigations of the existence, and use by the Indians, of so-called tar or oil springs. The first wells drilled were nonproductive, and the impending Civil War caused the search for oil to be discontinued. In 1884 a few shallow oil wells were drilled near Paola, and completion of several gas wells near that city led to subsequent drilling of an oil well, which was completed in June 1885, having an initial flow of 10 barrels of oil daily.In 1904 the original Paola gas field became a good oil-producing field. In 1905 the Rantoul field in Franklin and Miami Counties was opened; and drilling activity spread throughout the adjoining area, resulting in development of several shallow oil pools in Linn and Anderson Counties. The first ""shoestring"" pool in eastern Kansas to produce oil was probably the Paola or Pressonville shoestring, which was discovered in 1917. The rate of oil production from the area declined until 1919, when the Centerville shoestring pool was discovered. Discovery of the Colony gas field in 1921 was followed within a few months by drilling of the Garnett and Garnett and bush City shoestring pools. The Schermerhorn pool (now part of the Centerville field) s discovered in 1927, and the Kincaid shoestring pool was first drilled in 1931. Keywords: copper, concentrate drying, steam dryer, dryers By placing additional demands on energy and gas flow, the moisture content of a copper concentrate has an adverse effect on the smelting process. Different drying technologies, such as directly heated rotary dryers, flash dryers, and steam dryers, are available to solve this problem. The energy requirements of and off-gas generated from different dryer types are compared. The performance of the steam dryer was found to be superior to that of the others. In particular, the rotary steam dryer and its benefits are discussed. Structural properties confer an advantage on the rotary steam dryer, for wear on tube elements is eliminated, and drying efficiency is improved. If steam is available, the rotary steam dryer is an excellent choice for drying copper concentrates.

This paper presents methods in use in British coal-mines for the suppression of dust. While the effect of present-day treatment will not be apparent for several years, in pits in South Wales, concentrations as high as 50 gm./1,000 cu. ft. were some years ago fairly common in various operations at or near the coal-face, with an average concentration of 20 gm./1,000 cu. ft. Now the average concentration in what were previously dusty pits is probably not greater than 3 gm./1,000 cu. ft.Nevertheless, every effort must be made to improve conditions still further. In South Wales it is claimed that 99% of the coal-faces requiring treatment have been dealt with either by wet cutting, infusion, or hand-spraying. The extent of the treatment by these methods can be gauged by the fact that the total length of coal-faces now being treated by water infusion in Cardiff and Swansea areas is about 33,000 yds., by wet cutting 25,000 yds., and by hand-spraying nearly 14,000 yds. The influence of methods of mining upon dust production is only mentioned very briefly in this review, and there is no doubt that much more is to be learned concerning this aspect. It can be stated, however, that good mining practice is essential to prevent unnecessary dust production, and the problem of dust in mines will be solved only by the closest co-operation between mine managers, workmen, and scientists.

Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

ANFO was being used as one of the blasting agents on a construction site in New England. Groundwater was encountered in numerous blast holes. The blasting contractor was employing typical explosives loading procedures for wet conditions. An abutter to the project complained that blasting caused her well water to have an odd taste and smell. Through testing, it was determined that there were hydrocarbons and nitrates in the well water. Several days later a second neighbor complained of foul tasting water; again it was determined that hydrocarbons and nitrates were present.

The Bureau of Mines has made periodic back-pressure tests on numerous gas wells in the Texas Panhandle field during the past several years to study the delivery capacities of the wells under different pressure and operating conditions and to determine the relationships between pressures and rates of delivery from gas wells.4/ However, information regarding the intake capacities of gas-well systems is meager, end in projects involving the flow of gas into porous-rock reservoirs it has been necessary to determine intake capacities of gas wells by trial. Accordingly the fundamental intake characteristics of natural-gas yells have been studied to develop a method for determining intake capacities under different wellhead pressures from data descriptive of the "output" or producing characteristic of the wells.
