This paper is published as a progress report for the first half of 1929 on the study of wining methods and costs in the Eastern and Central States. Data obtained from 25 mines using open-stope methods are correlated and summarized. Some of these mines have been described in considerable detail in reports already published as Information Circulars. In addition to the published reports on individual mines, considerable data have been obtained from other mines which were visited and studied during the course of the investigation. Many of these mines will later be described in detail in separate papers, and when the field has been covered in this manner it is planned to issue a bulletin on open-stops methods of mining which will amplify the subject matter of the present paper. Definition of ?Open-Stops?. - The term "open-stopes" as employed by the Bureau of Mines is applied to all naturally supported stopes; that is, stopes in which the excavated ore is not replaced by support of an artificial nature other than preps or stulls and in which the ore or (and) capping are not caved during the active life of the stopes.

"Hydrocyclone modelling and selection procedure is illustrated. Computerized procedure for hydrocyclone cut size determination for grinding and non-grinding applications is described.A standard procedure for evaluating operating hydrocyclones is described in detail. Many case studies are illustrated comparing actual plant performance with the computer simulation output in terms of overflow product size distributions.INTRODUCTION Cyclones are widely used for applications such as: close circuit grinding, backfill, tailings and dewatering. Normally, cyclones are used for very fine separations where screens are not suitable or too expensive. Figure 1 shows the separation size range of various classifying devices. Cyclones are popular because of their low capital and operating cost. Cyclone selection procedure for different applications depends on the amount of information available on the cyclone feed slurry characteristics. Closed circuit grinding applications will be discussed in detail in this paper. The Cut Size:The size of the material in the feed which reports 50% to each product stream (i.e. underflow and overflow), after correcting for the feed solids by-passing with the underflow liquid, is termed the cut size or ""d50c"". This is often used as the criterion and the basis for cyclone design.When the corrected recovery to underflow of each mesh size in the feed is plotted against the geometric mean size in microns on a log scale, the micron size corresponding to 50% recovery is the d50c size."

At the 25th Annual B.C. Mine Reclamation Symposium in September 2001, Huckleberry Mines Limited received the Jake MacDonald Reclamation Award for its exemplary mine waste management plan, conceived to prevent the onset of acid mine drainage and facilitate reclamation of the site. The mine is an excellent example of a total mine waste management plan, with all materials scheduled in detail for the life of the mine. The filling plan for the waste management facility takes into consideration the requirement for permanently flooding the potentially acid generating rock. From an acid generation point of view, the tailings fall in the zone of potentially acid generating material. To avoid long-term ARD concerns, it is planned to float pyrite out of the tailings towards the end of the mine life, thereby generating a non-acid generating tailings stream which will be used to cap the deposited mine waste. The pyrite-rich tailings will be discharged into the deeper portion of the impoundment. On closure, a permanent water cover will be maintained over the mine waste. Only beaches of non-acid generating tailings will remain exposed. Mining will be phased to also allow one of the pits to provide storage for potentially acid generating rock and to be flooded at the end of mine life.

?It is in the interest of stability and investor confidence that the healthy and necessary debate on such a (minerals) policy should soon find its way to consensus.? (President Nelson Mandela at the104th (1995), AGM of the South African Chamber of Mines) Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa initiated a dynamic period in the historical development of its minerals policy. The process of substituting the current South African mineral policy framework with an acceptable ?post apartheid? system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) government. The Green Paper on a Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa released for public discussion in February 1998, calls for radical transformation in mineral rights ownership. A shift towards exclusive state ownership of mineral rights, away from the present dual system of private and state ownership, is the most significant proposal. The current holders of mineral rights, or their nominees, who lawfully enjoyed security of tenure under past and present mineral laws are opposed to this transformation because mineral rights were often acquired at considerable cost. The situation is compounded by poor public record-keeping and passive mineral rights administration over a very long period. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current legislative environment and forms the basis for any discussion on which future sculpturing of South Africa?s policy regarding mineral rights can take place. One cannot plan for the future without considering the past!

Asmismo, se realizó un diagnóstico previó que abarcó los procesos de geología, planeamiento, exploración, explotación, beneficio de minerales en planta concentradora, mantenimiento y proceso de comunicación gerencial. Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

In Bangkok due to the prevailing condition of subsoil (existence of considerably weak stratum at top part) deep-seated large diameter bored piles of over 50 m depth with 0.8 -1.8m in diameter have been mainly used for heavy structures such as high rise buildings, elevated expressways, flyovers and more recently for underground subway stations of the first Bangkok MRTA system. As a part of pre-planned quality assurance regime and retrospective investigation, integrity of the piles are tested to obtain the information with regard to the potential deficiencies of the constructed piles which may have formed during pile construction process or may have been attributed by other activities after construction of the piles. An overview of three commonly used non-destructive tests such as sonic integrity, sonic logging and high strain dynamic load tests on deep-seated piles in Bangkok subsoil is presented in this paper. Advantages and limitations of each integrity test are discussed.

The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

Risk assessment consists of a search for the answers to: ?What can happen? ?How likely it is that it can happen? ?What are the consequences if it does happen? Perhaps the most important aim of risk analysis is to predict the likelihood that a planned profit will be achieved over a given period of time. A typical risk model employed for this purpose includes a stochastic connection between the dependent variable of an expression that describes a process and independent variables represented as random quantities. The output will be a probabilistic distribution. The uncertainties in a planned mining operation include: ?Commodity market characteristics, particularly price ?Ore reserves and mineralogical composition ?Mining method ?Process performance ?Capital and operating costs ?Schedule duration ?Economic environment effects. The processes employed in the probabilistic estimation of a project?s outcome include both Monte Carlo simulations and simulations where variable correlation is considered important. The risk model, once developed and tested, provides a framework for a rational approach to risk analysis and the testing of alternatives.

Arsenic, which is a toxic and carcinogenic element, causes serious environmental problems throughout the world. It is also known as a major contaminant in the non-ferrous mining and extractive metallurgical industries, thus its disposal is one of the most important environmental issues for the mining and metallurgical industries. In order to ensure a safe disposal environment for the final wastes, stabilization of arsenic has been studied extensively with various approaches. Solidification/stabilization (S/S) represents one of the most effective methods to reduce the availability of arsenic in soil and waste by transforming toxic or potentially hazardous phases into less hazardous ones. Cement based S/S processes could reduce the solubility of arsenic in solid waste, using inorganic binders such as cement, lime, and pozzolanic materials. A new tailings management technique, called cemented paste backfill (CPB), has become widely employed for improving mining techniques and for tailing storage purpose and this technique could also enhance arsenic stabilization, by fixing the contaminants in the binder matrix. Disposal of arsenic in the form of scorodite (FeAsO4?2H2O) has been widely accepted as currently the most suitable method for stabilization and the safest known storage material. The Bio-scorodite process has been reported to be more economic and environmentally friendly method than the chemical crystallization processes. Retention of arsenic by schwertmannite (Fe8O8(OH)6SO4), a metastable ferric oxyhydroxy sulfate mineral, has gained more attention in the recent years. Schwertmannite has a large specific surface area and high capacity to adsorb arsenic in solution. Several researchers have reported that the transformation of schwertmannite to goethite could be retarded by the presence of adsorbed arsenic; therefore schwertmannite might be viable alternative for long-term storage of arsenic. In this paper, various approaches used in arsenic stabilization are reviewed with emphasis on the development in the recent years.

Over the last few years a multi-faceted feasibility study has been evaluating the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell powered equipment into underground mines to replaced diesel engine powered equipment. The analysis has shown that under normal operating conditions fuel cells could at the very least be an environmental and health benefit by eliminating combustion engines and their unwanted by-products. However, they could also generate significant reductions in the amount of ventilation a mine needs to supply when compared to dieselized operations; this would further decrease a mine?s energy consumption, its associated greenhouse gas impact and also reduce a mine?s significant ventilation associated costs. Fuel cell powered equipment also has the advantage of lower noise and heat production compared to their equivalent diesel powered counterpart. The degree to which fuel cells can generate ventilation benefits in underground mines depends upon a number of operational parameters and mine specific qualifiers such as current ventilation control or management, mine depth, inherent dust conditions and minimum velocity requirements. However another major consideration in the introduction of fuel cells in underground mines will be the safety requirements associated with diluting and removing the potentially explosive hydrogen in the event of a gas leak. In outside surface applications, it is possible to use dispersion, buoyancy, time, and lack of ignition sources as mitigating factors in deriving a low risk of an explosion. However, in underground operations these factors change, dispersion and buoyancy are limited; time may not be available and in non-coal mines ignition sources are not typically controlled. When a hydrogen leak occurs, the availability of sufficient ventilation to dilute and effectively remove the gas will be critical, consequently ventilation may be the prime risk controlling factor. In this paper, the authors evaluate the potential benefits of replacing diesel engines with fuel cells in powered production equipment, discuss the mitigating qualifiers that could limit ventilation savings and evaluate solutions to retain and maintain an additional ventilation capacity in the event of an emergency situation such as a hydrogen leak from the fuel cell stack or its distribution system.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. Asi también se realiza un estudio base de la comunidad, donde se priorizen las necesidades de las comunidades a través de la estrategia de concertación y así ejecutar proyectos participativos de desarrollo social. Finalmente, la información recolectada se sustenta y validad por las experiencias llevadas a cabo en las 36 comunidades del entorno de las operaciones de SPCC, convirtiéndose en un aporte para el tratamiento comunitario.

A demountable X-ray tube vacuum spectrograph was designed by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of long-wavelength X-ray spectra from the light elements. This instrument was operated for both secondary and combined primary-secondary excitation of the aluminum K-series. There was an increased analytical sensitivity for elements in period 3, and an indication that with improved X-ray tubes or direct election excitation of the sample, X-ray determination of elements in period 2 is also possible.
