THE evaluation of data obtained by selective flotation from even a simple ore is a very difficult process, and when the ore tested is complex the process becomes extremely difficult and cumbersome. The authors, in the course of an investigation into the selective behavior of various flotation reagents on nonmetallic minerals§ were confronted with an aggravated form of this difficulty, owing to the large mass of data that had accumulated over a period of years. They finally devised a method whereby the results of the various flotation tests could be correlated and interpreted by means of graphs representing recoveries and rejections of the component minerals in the ore. This method of graphical analysis proved so useful in nonmetallic flotation that it was afterwards applied to sulphide flotation, where it yielded equally satisfactory results. Since this method of analysis leads to very definite conclusions as to the effect of changes in reagents and flotation procedure, it is felt that a wider application of the method might assist the industry by reducing the amount of test work required, and possibly increase the accuracy of the final analysis. GRAPHS In Fig. I, four curves are plotted on the same graph with cumulative percentages as ordinates and cumulative weights as abscissas. In this instance the four curves are named, respectively: the barite-recovery curve, the limestone-rejection curve, the silica-rejection curve, and the summation curve. In these tests barite was the mineral concentrated, therefore a barite concentrate was produced. Definitions Before explaining the curves in detail it might be advisable to define several new terms, such as "percentage rejection," "summation index," and "summation curve," as well as the word "test," which has been used in a special sense. A "test" will include all the operations performed upon a batch of ore from the time it is placed in the rod mill until the last product has been assayed. Thus a test may be a comparatively simple procedure producing only one concentrate and a tailing, or it may be a very complicated procedure producing five or more concentrates of a specific mineral as well as a tailing. The number of concentrates produced will depend entirely upon whether the collector was added to the pulp in the flotation cell in one lot or was added in five or more portions. Percentage Rejection.-The ability of a selective flotation collector to reject an undesired mineral is just as important as its ability to collect the desired mineral. The percentage rejection curves shown on the graphs give this factor due consideration and its value is calculated as follows: Suppose a concentrate contains 5 per cent of an undesired mineral. A modified falling ball technique for measuring the viscosity of liquids is described. It consists of recording the weight vs. time of a crucible holding the liquid of unknown viscosity, as a solid ball, or liquid drop, is let to fall through the liquid. This method does not require measurements at constant terminal velocity, as the conventional falling ball technique. Also, measurements do not depend on visual observation, which is not possible in opaque liquids or containers. The effect of process parameters on the utility of this method and its potential application to liquid systems of metallurgical interest were analyzed theoretically. The paper also com- pares the gravimetric method to the conventional falling ball technique for measuring viscosity.

Principles of Green Chemistry provide useful guidance for sustainable mineral process development. Laboratory bench scale testing was carried out using pregnant cyanide leach solutions, and a number of commercially available mercury precipitation reagents were compared using jar testing to determine the most efficient and selective reagents for mercury precipitation. The most efficient reagent identified was sodium polymeric thiocarbonate (NaPTC).Coagulation experiments with fine diatomaceous earth resulted in a stable precipitate, with good settling properties. On line monitoring of the mercury in solution is recommended for process implementation to conserve reagent removing approximately 90-95% of the mercury with minimal silver and negligible gold losses.

A method is proposed to estimate the gold content of the ore in the size intervals during size reduction. The method uses the population balance model to trace the gold deportment through the size fractions and monitor the generation of liberated gold grains during the size reduction. The model is calibrated using batch grinding test results of a gold ore. Crone Geophysics Limited in co-operation with Newmont Exploration Limited has developed a ground Pulse electromagnetic method. This is the first unit in a planned integrated system of surface and borehole Pulse EM equipment. Newmont had previously developed an operational Pulse EM unit for use in areas of very high surface conductivity. The Newmont equipment was large, heavy apparatus that required motorized transport. It operated in the equivalent frequency spectrum of 10Hz to 2.5Hz. The basic aim of Crone Geophysics was to design a Pulse EM system more portable than Newmont's. We wanted to operate in all types of field conditions including heavily wooded and mountainous terrain areas. We also wanted to record the higher frequency information that is contained in the Pulse EM waveform. There are three reasons why we thought this high frequency information was important in survey applications: (1) Field tests conducted over massive sulphide bodies in the Arizona desert showed that the desert weathering process tended to break down the electrical contact between sulphide crystals. The net effect is to reduce the conductivity of a massive sulphide body, particularly narrow bodies or highly fractured sulphide zones. In order to detect such occurances the higher frequency information is essential. (2) We wanted to be able to detect occurances with sulphide content as low as 5% sulphides that are usually poor to moderate conductors. (3) We also wanted to be able to determine the presence and extent of surficial conductive formations and clay deposits since many airborne EM anomalies are caused by such bodies. If we have the capability of detecting and recognizing these formations we would be able to explain the airborne anomaly.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate (31.9 per 100,000 workers) among all major American industry. To address this, a major research program to reduce hazard exposure of miners with computer-assisted mining equipment was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.1 One application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the haulage equipment so that it follows the machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors that can survive the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water, play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine's movements and empirical machine characterizations were conducted to establish operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a sensing system. Various technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications but were found unacceptable. However, a near infrared (IR) sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75° conical field-of-view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.56 m. Correction algorithms were generated reducing the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than 0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at levels exceeding (by a factor of 7.5) concentrations permitted by Federal law. The sensor can track multiple active targets providing five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) measurements. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commer¬cially. Such a system can reduce fatalities and injuries by current haulage mining equipment, and is a viable alternative to current haulage control.

To aid in winning the recent world war, the Bureau of Mines conducted a National Fuel Efficiency Program, directed to commercial plants throughout the Nation, to save greatly needed fuel, a basic resource vital to industrial production. In planning this program it was realized that to accomplish a satisfactory reduction in fuel consumption in any plant, it would be necessary to reach, enthuse, and usually educate to some extent the actual operators of the various types of plant equipment. A major part of the programs consisted, therefore, of visits to plants and work with the operators, including a review with them of their operating conditions and of educational and guiding literature pertinent to the operating problems involved. Through a Nation-wide organization, local volunteer engineers served in making visits to local plants. Each cooperating plant appointed an employee as the "waste chaser," who headed the work of saving fuel in that plant. The educational literature was designed to interest the operator, as well as serve as a guide in eliminating waste of fuel. Volumes have been written on many subjects relating to the saving of fuel. Writings of the treatise type contain considerable good information but do not have wide appeal and probably will be read only by a few studious operators. The problem is not one of getting clown on paper everything that the experts know and would like to have the operator know, but rather to write something that will actually interest the operator and stimulate him to action. Past experience led to the adoption, therefore, of the "quiz-sheet" type of writing, using a quiz sheet of not more than two pages for any principal item. The results obtained during the National Fuel Efficiency Program in many types of plants further demonstrated that the short quiz sheet is satisfactorily appropriate and does accomplish results. Mining is the art of disturbing ground. All phases of a mine’s life cycle from exploration to building and operating a mine, through closure, has a physical impact on the earth. There is currently increasing public and stakeholder awareness owing to a wide range of issues including heritage protection, environmental stewardship, and social impacts therefore ground disturbance must be conducted in a way that honours and respects all agreements, regulations, legislation, and social expectations. A comprehensive ground disturbance permitting process has been developed through consultation with major mining companies and Traditional Owner groups. It operates from strategic business planning through to closure and rehabilitation. Adherence to the principles and process of permitting helps to minimise risk by ensuring that mining companies conduct their business in an inclusive, professional, reliable, and consistent manner that stakeholders reasonably expect, and that mining companies can be proud of. Built on a geographical information system, supplemented with a specialist database, this process allows request, review, and approval by subject matter experts, to operate in a common environment that is transparent, facilitates collaboration, improves efficiencies, and reduces the risk of error or omission. The application of new technology can effectively highlight changes that naturally occur in today’s dynamic ESG domain and provides the perfect platform to record actual disturbance against authorised and planned allowances. The social license to operate demands that strong governance of the ground disturbance process, described herein, can be demonstrated to any interested stakeholder, and mining companies recognise that this principle is central to the betterment of the mining industry.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

"The most commonly used tendon supports in the Sudbury area include rock bolts, rebars, friction anchors and cable bolts. Due to the fact that these tendons are physically different and employ different anchoring systems they offer varying degrees of stiffness, yield ability, load capacity, anchor dependability and energy absorption. These differences coupled with variable rock mass and changing stress conditions have made it challenging to engineer the design of an effective support system. By tapping into the knowledge and experience gained by ground control practitioners, an empirically based rating system has been assembled that offers a guide to designers of support systems when choosing the most effective tendon support over a range of rock mass and stress conditions.A methodology referred to as support planning can be used to design support systems whose rehabilitation costs will be minimized. The use of multiple tendon types in anyone support layout is advocated, particularly when the stress state of the rock mass to be supported is expected to undergo a change."

WHILE the literature in the United States on general polarographic technique is extensive, very little appears to be directly applicable to the analysis of flotation tailings. For this reason, it seemed worth while to present a few polarographic methods of ore analysis that have been in constant use in the laboratories of the Hercules Experiment Station for the past few years. At the time of our initial investigation of the polarographic method, there was little or no mention of its specific application to flotation tailings. It was therefore necessary for us to establish suitable conditions for the analysis of our flotation tailings and to consider possible interfering constituents. The polarograph, or dropping mercury electrode, method was discovered in 1925 by J. Heyrovsky and M. Shikata,1 of the Charles University, Prague. This method has since received extensive development and the literature contains many articles on the use of the polarograph for the quantitative determination of metals as well as anions, oxygen in solution, and reducible organic compounds. Kolthoff and Lingane,2 by the publication of their book, "Polarography," in 1941 did much to advance the knowledge and use of the polarograph. In chapter 25 of that book, methods for the polarographic analysis of brass, steel and iron products, alloys, and zinc ore are given. Aluminum,3 cadmium,3.4 cobalt,4 copper,3-9 gold,10 iron,3,11 lead, 3,12,13 molybdenum," nickel,4.8,9 tin,15 and zinc3,4,5,7 in ores have been analyzed by the polarograph. However, most of the work on tailing samples has been published in Russian journals and translations are not yet readily available. In this paper we will describe the method that was developed and used in our laboratory for the determination of copper, zinc, and lead in flotation tailings. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The polarograph is an instrument for applying a potential to a mercury pool and a dropping mercury electrode separated by a solution, and for measuring the resultant electrical current. The procedure is essentially a small-scale electrolysis, in which the voltage required to reduce or oxidize the material identifies it qualitatively and the current measures the concentration quantitatively. Different constituents in a sample may often be determined simultaneously provided they reduce at sufficiently different voltages. An example is the determination of copper and zinc in the same solution. The reduction potentials are quite far apart, as shown in Fig. I. Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.

It started operation underground at Rowland Shaft in early 2002. This paper covers the results of those trials that resulted in more than 1 100square metres of UG2 being mined.

For the treatment of huge amounts of the sulfur which is from the earth by both natural and man-made activities, a harmonized sulfur cycle was presented. The man-made sulfur cycle which includes sulfur circulation from oil, coal and ore was analyzed in detail based on the recent world sulfur trend. Then the man-made cycle was compared with the natural sulfur evolution such as volcano. Finally, the harmony in both natural and man-made sulfur cycles was discussed.
