In many modem concentrators the use of supervisory systems in their grinding circuits has meant more consistent operations and increases in capacity. These systems rely on a series of specific algorithms that uses different pieces of information and drives actions over the process. One of these algorithms is the ball mill overload detection, which plays an important role in any supervisory strategy designed to maximize ore feed rate in wet grinding circuits. This paper introduces different overload detection algorithms, and compares them in terms of the time taken to detect the overload condition. This comparative analysis is based on highly noisy power draw measurements obtained in an industrial plant.

The grinding circuit at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) – Batu Hijau mine consists of two SABC (semi-autogenous milling, ball milling, pebble crushing) trains, including four 20'?×?33'6? ball mills that have been lined with steel liners since the commissioning of the plant in 1999. During 2011 and 2012 an industrial trial was conducted to evaluate Poly-Met liners (a combination of rubber and steel liners). These new liners were installed in two of the ball mills (ball mills 1 and 2) and operated in parallel with ball mills 3 and 4 with steel liners.The objective of the trial was to compare the plant performance with the Poly-Met and steel ball?mill liners with regards to wear life, mill throughput, grind size and total unit costs. The trial was conducted over the entire life of the liners. The evaluation methodology implemented consisted of frequent spot sampling around the ball mill circuits, complete surveys/audits in both ball mills, and detailed analysis of process data. PRACTICALLY all fine grinding is done in a ball mill or some modification of a ball mill. Millions of tons of material are ground each year. The cost varies from, say, a minimum of 10 c. to a maximum of 35 c. per ton. It is thus obvious that even small improvements, which may result in increased grinding efficiency, would be welcomed by mill operators. A review of literature shows that various phases of the subject have been studied independently by many investigators. Also, it is now a subject of investigation at various laboratories in the United States and in foreign countries. Notwithstanding this extensive investigation, ball milling still remains a subject of some speculation. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of some of the factors entering into ball mill grinding.

THE absolute efficiency of crushing and grinding in a ball mill is not known. A number of investigators have made calculations to this end and have presented efficiency figures. Two factors have prompted further investigation of this subject: (1) the unbelievably low magnitude of the values offered, and (2) a desire to obtain, if possible, true relationships between the relative efficiencies of a ball mill operating under varying conditions. A useful forward step in the study of mill efficiency was made when Martin1 and Gross and Zimmerley2 proved the correctness of Rittinger's law, and incidentally the incorrectness of the so-called Kick law, and when Gross and Zimmerley3 determined and gave surface values for Tyler sieve-sized quartz. These data are probably accurate throughout the range of the sieve scale, but on -400 mesh (which is the finest sieve available), the surface data, as obtained by the hydrofluoric acid disso-lution method, are of doubtful reliability. Any inaccuracy existing in surface determinations of -400-mesh material, especially when comparing runs in which varying quantities of this product are formed, will cause the resulting relative mill efficiency values to be distorted. Moreover, knowing surface accurately, the efficiency calculations require a surface energy figure. THE object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the "bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a compre-hensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific varia-bles, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this "new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grind-ing from the standpoint of set and induced variables, with emphasis on the latter.

Introduction Ball mills are lined drums, either cylindrical in shape or modified cylinders that have either one or both ends of the shell, consisting of conical sections, that rotate about the horizontal axis. Fig. I I shows a cylindrical mill, Fig. 12 a conical ball mill, and Fig. 13 a Tricone ball mill (Hardinge tradename). Steel or iron grinding media, generally in the shape of spheres, are used to grind the ore to the specified product size. In order to obtain more contact area for grinding and to simulate the shape of worn balls, balls have been made with two concave surfaces diametrically opposite each other. Some concentra¬tors, such as Erie Mining Co., have used slugs cut from worn and broken rods to supplement the balls in ball mills and save money otherwise lost as rod scrap. Cylindrical and conical shapes have been tried instead of balls, but balls remain as the most common shape grinding media used in ball mills. Ball mills were a logical development from the earlier pebble mills that used hard natural pebbles such as flint pebbles or sized ore pebbles (obtained from the ore itself) as grinding media. In the early 1900s36 it was found that when cast iron or cast steel balls were used in place of flint or ore pebbles, the mills drew more power and gave greater production capacity. Advances in technology have resulted in the manufacture of ball mills up to 18 ft diam inside shell, drawing up to 8,000 hp. Ball mills are employed to grind ores, especially the more abrasive ores, to finer sizes than can be produced economically in other size¬reduction machines such as roll crushers, hammer mills, and impactors. Ores can be ground dry-dry grinding-or in a slurry-wet grinding-using ball mills. Dry grinding nominally refers to less than I %v moisture by weight. If the moisture content increases by several percent, dry grinding capacity is significantly reduced as shown in Table 17. The usual range of solids content in wet ball-mill slurries is from 65 to 80% by weight. Wet grinding is used to prepare the feed material for unit opera¬tions such as flotation, magnetic separation, gravity concentration, and leaching that require a slurry of liberated valuable mineral and unwanted gangue particles. Dry grinding" is employed to produce feed for agglomeration, pelletizing, and pyrometallurgy processes that require feed that is dry or nearly so and for finely ground industrial mineral products used in the dry state. Dry grinding is also used when minerals cannot be dewatered economically to the required moisture level or when the ground product reacts unfavorably with liquids. For example, cement clinker must be ground dry. Dry grinding requires about 30% more power than wet grinding for comparable size reduction .28 The total power required in a dry¬grinding ball-mill plant including drying may be double that required for a wet-grinding plant. Grinding-media and liner consumption in dry grinding reported as pounds of metal consumed per kilowatt-hour per ton of ore" is 10-20% of that used in wet grinding. The Wabush pellet plant, Point Noire, Que.3o reported ball consumption dropped from 6.3 lb per ton of ore ground to 2.5 lb per ton of ore ground when they converted from wet to dry grinding, and a 30% increase in power consumption. A number of comparisons made on wet and dry grinding of cement raw materials show metal consumption in dry grinding to be 10% of that in wet grinding. The capital costs for wet grinding are generally lower than for dry grinding. When thickening and filtering of the wet-ground product are required, dry grinding may have a lower capital cost. With open-circuit grinding the ball-mill discharge passes directly to the next processing step without being screened or classified and no fraction is returned to the ball mill (Fig. 14). In closed-circuit grinding the ground material, undersize, in the ball-mill discharge is removed either using a screen or a classifier with the oversize being returned to the mill for additional size reduction (Fig. 15). The over¬size material that is returned to the ball mill is called the circulating load. Open-circuit ball-mill grinding requires more power than closed¬-circuit grinding for products containing similar amounts of top-size material. The less the amount of oversize allowed in the product, the longer the ore must remain in the ball mill when grinding in open circuit. This increases the production of extreme fines and thus the consumption of more power. The power required for open-circuit ball-mill grinding can be estimated using the multipliers listed in Table 18 and knowing the power required for closed-circuit grinding to yield the desired product particle size. For example, assuming the desired grind size is 90% passing some specific top size, open-¬circuit grinding would require 1.40 times the power to achieve similar results as closed-circuit grinding.

"Most SAG grinding operations currently use ball sizes between 5.5 and 6 inch maximum size. However, in most cases the use of this ball sizes hasn’t been justified by a phenomenological analysis of the real effect on the grinding process, but rather by trial and error. The analysis of the influence of ball sizes in SAG grinding hasn’t been developed in detail by considering the effect on process parameters inside the mill, grinding efficiency or internal classification. Historically a conventional grinding reference has been made on the empirical procedure developed by Azzaroni (1980). Further to Azzaroni’s methodology, Sepulveda (Sepúlveda, 2007) developed the SPEC methodology, incorporating the ball size effect on the grinding efficiency parameters using a population balance model included on Molycop tools spreadsheets.This paper demonstrates a detailed analysis at pilot scale of the ball size employed in SAG grinding and scaling that exists between the different levels. This analysis includes assessing the effect of balls sizes on parameters associated with grinding efficiency and its effect on the total fill level, product size distribution and specific energy consumption, among others. In a complementary way it develops a technical - economical evaluation from industrial data comparing two different ball sizes and its effect on the grinding process analysed integrally."

Since May of 2000, Mogas Industries, in partnership with F.W. Gartner Thermal Spraying Co. and using the services of Perpetual Technologies, has invested time, energy, and resources towards developing novel ball valves for high-pressure acid-leach (HPAL) service. In addition to developing new valve designs, an aggressive coatings development effort has been undertaken to improve the protective quality of the coatings so as to enhance the performance and extend the life of valves in severe HPAL conditions. In 2001, Mogas Industries qualified and applied a nanostructured titanium oxide (n-TiO2) coating for gold and nickel/cobalt HPAL services. The n-TiO2 coating provided dramatically superior protection against abrasive and erosive wear, fared very well against high-pressure autoclave corrosion testing, and has performed well in HPAL service.

BECAUSE of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following resume of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. MILLS USED Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was I3 1/2 in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 16 2/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. INITIAL TEST During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

ABSTRACTED AND REVIEWED BY E. W. DAVIS,* MEMBER A.I.M.E. THE January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice's paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. PRACTICAL BALL-MILL TESTS IN A CYLINDRICAL MILL Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manufacture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4 ¼ - in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 2 5/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3 ½ in., 3 in. or 2 ½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beché hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000 ºC., pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 2 5/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: ….. The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. The running time of the test-mill was divided into approximately equal periods of five days 13 ½ hours each. The usual procedure was to examine and make up the load

BALL wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4¢ per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3 1/2-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full-scale mill operation. However, with this fixed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. METHOD OF TESTING Tests were made in a small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.p.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10 1/2-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 c.c. of water was added every 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run on afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in some of the tests. HARDNESS OF BALL VS. WEAR In these tests, special "eutectoid" steel balls were used, some of which were chill-cast and quenched, some sand-cast and quenched, and some sand-cast and annealed to a dead soft condition. THIS paper deals primarily with an investigation of ball-mill liners that was conducted by the writer over a period of six years at the Mammoth mill in Arizona. The investigation covered a wide variety of designs of liners in both primary and secondary mills. The comparative results are presented herein as evidence of the extent to which design influenced liner life and mill performance. FLOWSHEET The feed to the Mammoth mill was a complex, oxidized, gold-silver-lead-molybdenum-vanadium ore with rhyolite, andesite and granite as gangue. Although the ore varied between stopes, the long-term average in character remained substantially the same. Capacity was 560 tons per day. [t] Fig. I shows an abbreviated flowsheet of the grinding section of the mill. PRIMARY BALL MILL A 3-ft. Symons shorthead crusher in open circuit crushed to ¼ -in. maximum one-way dimension the feed to the 5 by 10-ft. Marcy open-end ball mill. The mill rotated at 80 per cent of critical speed and was charged with 4-in. forged steel balls. Cast balls were used for a few months at a slight reduction in ball cost, but breakage of the large balls reduced the ball size and grinding capacity to a point where the over-all costs suffered out of proportion to the saving in cost of balls. For metallurgical reasons, the finished product of the mill was maintained at minus 8-mesh. This coarse product, plus the very abrasive ore and the absence of fines in the feed, caused abnormally rapid wear of the mill liners. The resultant high operating cost led to the most extensive phase of the investigation. [ ] In order to clarify the difference in design of the various types of liners used, Fig. 2 shows the profiles with the arrangement in which grinding balls of maximum size would lie on the face of the liners. The results with each type of shell liner in the primary mill are shown in Table I.

This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

"Installation of a 3.6 km long raw coal conveyor in the Balmer open pit was undertaken to improve over-all haulage efficiency. This paper covers the rationale behind this project, system design and construction aspects and initial operating experiences. The majority of the construction work was performed by our own personnel. Where feasible, used equipment was installed to reduce capital cost and facilitate a tight construction schedule.BackgroundWestar Mining Ltd's Balmer Mine is located in the British Columbia Rockies, just outside of the town of Sparwood in the southeastern corner of British Columbia. The open pit mine, which has been in operation since 1969, currently produces about 6 million clean tonnes of coal per year, mostly for the metallurgical coal export market. Run-of-mine coal tonnages total between 9 and 9.5 million annually and waste removal volumes exceed 30 million bank cubic metres.The mine is a truck/shovel operation; loading equipment includes nine electric shovels, five front-end loaders and a hydraulic backhoe. The truck fleet consists of 40 units of 154-tonne, 181-tonne and 315-tonne capacity. The newer 154-tonne trucks are used for coal haulage for which they have been equipped , with tailgates to maximize their coal carrying capacity."

THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Of late years the young men of this country who have wished to enter our profession have had great facilities offered to them for so doing ; there have been undoubtedly great improvements in the methods of instruction; and although I am very far from imagining that no further progress can be made, or is demanded, yet I feel sure that

The Construction of the Northeast Extension of the Baltimore Metro involved soft ground, compressed air tunneling. During the tunneling, gasoline and dry cleaning fluid contamination were encountered. Innovative approaches and solutions were developed to address these problems. Special emphasis was on the problem of compressed air pushing gasoline vapors into surrounding communities, resulting in an extremely dangerous situation and a public relations nightmare. Guidelines and standards were established for working in this contaminated environment. Also, through a proactive approach by all parties, all claims and disputes have been resolved.

The first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. 0. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Ark for 1567, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought clown to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends.
