"The goal of prospecting operations in the Republic of Altay was to locate gold-sulfide-quartz mineralization. For this purpose we applied the technology of electromagnetic sounding and induced polarization (EMS-IP). These operations resulted in localizing promising sites with presence of sulfidization. The EMS-IP method proved to be highly efficient amongst other prospecting methods targeted at recognizing zones of sulfide mineralization making up 91%, considering that in more than half cases the ore intervals were the case. In the Yakutian diamondiferous province the EMS-IP technology was approbated during three field seasons to accomplish the assignments on searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of various geological types. As a result, the reference objects were distinguished, and geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion were defined.INTRODUCTION In the time span 2015-2016 in Gorny Altay the EMS-IP technology was approbated in the Novokuznetsk area. The on-land areal geophysical survey was performed by EMS-IP method applied to identify, outline and locate promising sites with Au-Ag-bearing polymetallic mineralization within surveyed areas. Compared to the hosting rocks, the sulfides contained in polymetallic mineralization are typified by low specific electrical resistivity (SER) and high polarization. The areal survey conducted via EMS-IP method provided spatial characteristics of searched object. From July 2016 to August 2017 our expedition group carried out serial test works and laboratory investigations intending to define performance capabilities of EMS-IP technology in searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of diverse geological types. The prerequisites for serial work were operations accomplished at the «Listvenichny» site lying 35 km away from Mirny town in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), where the EMS-IP technology was probed for locating position and measuring geoelectric parameters of tuff pipe «Buardakhsky». After successful completion of operations it was decided to evaluate geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion."

"Optimisation of drill and blast design and engineering can deliver a significant positive impact on the profitability of any mining operation; however, true engineering of the blasting process is less common than might be thought. The paper that follows explores this gap and suggests a process control-based approach to the challenge.The concept of applying modifications to drill and blast designs in order to achieve efficiency improvements in downstream mining processes is far from new. However, the author suggests that the practical application has become less than rigorous in a number of different sectors of the mining industry in a wide range of countries.There is a common tendency for the design process to become simplified to the point where the objective is merely the communication of instructions to field implementers (drillers, explosive suppliers, blasters, etc). In effect ‘design’ often degrades to ‘cut and paste’ with consequences that vary from mild to critical, with respect to the profitability of the business.Engineering of the drill and blast process involves the design function, not on a one-off basis but rather as a component of a more complete cyclical process that includes a statement of objectives, a design based on a suggested hypothesis, field measurement of results, comparison with the target ‘set point’ and the application of control measures followed by new measurement, including interpretation of the results in financial terms.When applied in this fashion, engineering provides practitioners with the means to optimise the drill and blast impact on the full spectrum business result of the mining activity.These concepts are discussed with reference to a surface gold mining operation applying run-of-mine heap leach extraction. Engineering optimisation by adapting process control and measurement techniques is demonstrated to be a key component of the solution set applied to generate enhanced operations productivity and stakeholder value. It is shown that a combination of rigorous measurement, model calibration and hands-on quality assurance/quality control facilitates the creation of a road map to profitability, stressing the need to consider economic trade-offs between operational expense (investment) and measurement of enhanced value (return on investment).The process, however, does not cease at this point. Implementation of true design practices, incorporating innovation and discipline in implementation or execution can drive the process to deliver demonstrable, technically validated outcomes. Furthermore, these technical results can be related to financially quantifiable impacts. Mineral processing options and technical innovations should be financially assessed. Indeed technical feasibility alone does not offer an adequate process selection criterion. An appraisal by the use of engineering economics principles leads to a more efficient evaluation and selection of feasible mineral processing solutions. Financial consequences of different options synthesised by profitability indices allow better decision making. Selected examples derived from real world problems are used to illustrate the potential of engineering-economics methods applied to mineral processing.

This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober<sup>®</sup> economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. Criteria used to define map units include substrate, soil, topography, geologic process, vegetation, and land use. The maps are useful in planning and reclamation of lignite mines and in meeting the requirements of state and federal surface mining laws. Specific applications include identification of land capability, recharge areas and geometry of aquifers, flood-prone areas, areas that may qualify for prime farmland status, and other areas sensitive to lignite mining.

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

"Commercial stainless steels (SUS304L and SUS430) were subjected to equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) at room temperature to a total strain of 2.3 to 9.2. For each type of stainless steel, it was shown that the sample processed by ECAE showed higher room temperature strength than the as-quenched sample. This is probably due to the heavily worked structure. On the other hand, both strength and elongation of the ECAE processed SUS430 were increased by annealing at 773K. It is likely that higher strength is attributed to both the heavily worked structure and fine substructures. It is also likely that higher elongation is attributed to the fine substructures. It is concluded that ECAE is available for improving the room temperature strength of commercial stainless steels.INTRODUCTIONEqual channel angular extrusion ( ECAE ) is a technique that provides the repetitive deformation and allows to high intensity of deformation. With this procedure, a sample is pressed through a channel that has an equal cross section but bent at an angle of ?> [1-2]. Shear strain is introduced when a sample passes through the bending point of the channel. Repetitive processing is feasible because the cross-sectional dimension of a sample has no change during processing. To date, many reports have described that ECAE is available for the fabrication of fine-grained materials [3-14]. On the other hand, an ECAE processed sample can achieve high intensity of deformation through repetitive deformation. According to the equation given by Segal [ 2 ], a strain of about 1 is introduced in each pass through die if the angle ? is 90 deg.It is well known that high tensile strength can be achieved in metallic materials through work hardening [15]. It is also known that metallic materials with fine grain size show high strength [16]. Hence, it is expected that ECAE is available for strengthening method in metallic materials. In the present paper, we will report the mechanical properties of stainless steels processed by ECAE. As samples, SUS304L austenite stainless steel and SUS430 ferritic stainless steel were chosen. Each alloy has a single-phase structure (fee or bee) and shows no phase transformation, so that transformation strengthening cannot be applied. Hence, a heavy cold work such as ECAE may be effective for strengthening of this stainless steel. Annealing was conducted for the ECAE processed SUS430 to vary its microstructure. Then, the effect of annealing on the strength of the ECAE processed SUS430 was also investigated."

Equivalent-pressure ventilation is a method of balancing the air pressure between a productive face and its gob to extinguish fires and prevent the infiltration of toxic gases, so that the production of the face can be maintained. The method was successfully applied in Coal Mine No. 1 of Hebi Coal Mining Administration in north-central China. In this article, a practical application of the equivalent-pressure method to prevent carbon monoxide from entering an active longwall face adjacent to a fire breeding area is described, and four steps to achieve equivalent-pressure are discussed. The reliability of using this method and measures to maintain the equivalent-pressure are analyzed. It was observed that this method could maintain high production level while no sacrificing safety at the longwall face.

The traditional approach to managing information flow between a mine underground and overground, applied in copper mines of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., is mostly based on exchanging spoken information using the mine telephone network and printed documentation. This way of information flow significantly influences effective use of time of a shift foreman employed at a mining division. In order to minimise multiplication of significant information generated as paper documentation, a concept of an IT system module to input basic data concerning operation of the mining division was developed. The idea is based on computer software that permits inputting data in the underground and their immediate sending to the overground. The above-mentioned solution will permit significant reduction of administrative work time that each foreman has to do on each shift. The time saved on filling forms and communication will permit the foreman and the other workers involved in information flow to spend more time for execution of their basic duties. In the case of the supervision employees working in the overground, the IT system will allow all the interested persons to be informed directly, with no necessity to transfer the information on the situation in the given mining division by turns from one to another. On the other hand, saving time on administrative works will permit the foreman employed in the underground executing more detailed inspection of workplaces in his subordinate mine division. Thus, availability of the foreman for the mining division operation will be improved. KEYWORDS

"An Event Tree Analysis (ETA) is an established approach for logically deconstructing and assessing scenarios for probabilistic risk assessment. This deconstruction into a series of understandable eventsfacilitates probability estimation for explicitly defined explosive terrorism scenarios with consideration of modes of possible failure during execution (a scenario is defined through selection of a target, selection of an explosive material, and interdiction prior to arriving at general target location, etc.). Further, each event is decomposed into a range of possible outcomes. The physical action or reality ofthe outcome is statistically represented by “branches” of the event tree (e.g., the terrorist may choose totarget a stadium, hotel, or subway; terrorists may be successful or unsuccessful in acquiring the material)."

The application of evolutionary operation is proposed for the cleaning of coal by the heavy media process. Analysis of the data given suggests some benefits that may not be immediately appreciated unless evolutionary operation is applied. For example, while it may seem obvious to increase specific gravity when the ash and sulfur content of the clean coal is lower than that allowed, evolutionary operation may show that an increase in feed rate or an increase in both feed rate and specific gravity would be a more profitable alternative. In addition, by using evolutionary operation, up-to-date knowledge of the effect of change of feed rate or specific gravity on yield and product quality is available. This information facilitates confidence about decisions made in regard to the day-to-day operation of these units. A number of other applications in the minerals industry are proposed. An application of evolutionary operation in a related field is also given where a large number of variables were required to be optimized.

Plant process optimization programs are often costly, both in technical effort and loss of production. Evolutionary Operation or "EVOP" is a mode of plant operation consisting of controlled cyclical changes in process conditions by which information is provided concerning potential process improvements while both volume and quality uniformity in production are maintained. Its conceptual simplicity and low cost of utilization have led to successful adoption in a variety of industrial manufacturing operations. This paper is an expository account of basic EVOP theory, the problems encountered and the organization required in applying it to a processing plant. Illustrations are provided which indicate the payoff that can result.

"It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."

Flyrock is the unwanted throw of rock fragments to excessive distances in opencast blasting. The incidence is relative in nature incorporating the distance of objects of concern like structures within and outside the mine, equipment within the mine & near the blast and persons within and off the mine. Several attempts to predict and defi ne fl yrock made worldwide could not address the problem since the phenomenon is not a regular feature in blasting. This probabilistic nature of fl yrock allows for risk calculation. CIMFR, India developed a Factor of Safety based risk criterion (10, 14) for evaluation of throw/ fl yrock in opencast mines that incorporates all the above in terms of distance and allowable limit of throw – which in turn determines the risk. The criterion provides the blaster a tool for mathematical evaluation of fl yrock risk in terms of a Factor of Safety and threat ratio (defi ned for the 1st time), thereby enhancing confidence when blasting. The method is easy to use and has been applied to several mines in India and the results are signifi cant. This paper details the evolution of the concept and its application in three limestone mines of India and the results obtained. The application of the method for defi ning a fl exible danger zone is also discussed.

Factorial optimisation technique has been used to develop regression equations at different time intervals for extraction of manganese from precipitated manganese oxide/hydroxide in sulphuric acid using charcoal as the reductant. The three parameters chosen for a 23 full factorial design were : acid concentration, amount of carbon and temperature. The regression equations were used to predict >> 90% extractions as well as kinetic data.

The impact of fatigue is seen not only in its effect on the job performance of haul truck operators but also on the health of the operator and the productivity at the mine site. Its impact can even extend outside of the mine site to the health and well-being of the surrounding community (Fourie et al., 2010). In this paper, a case study of a small, surface mining organization is presented. The goal is to highlight the fatigue risk management system implemented at the studied mine site. Mine safety personnel who were interviewed discuss the changes made to the infrastructure of the mine, to administrative areas such as the number of shifts and the use of vacation time, as well as the implementation of new technology into haulage vehicles. This paper reviews how these changes are supported in the research literature.

Both ferromanganese crusts and nodules present potential processors with enormous volumes of tailings of dubious environmental character: most processing scenarios fail to utilize the uneconomic manganese itself, leaving a total waste volume on the order of 96% of the incoming ore. Each current disposal proposal seems flawed: (1) backhauling to the initial mine site is costly and might run afoul of EPA or UN marine dumping*regulations, (2) subsea disposal near a coastal processing site means almost inevitable community opposition, (3) agricultural soil amendment for improving barren lava or coral rubble appears to require prohibitive amounts of supplementary phosphate, and (4) the slag resulting from an energy intensive pyrometallurgical processing may have potential as road ballast, but few processors will opt for smelting in all but those locales where energy is very cheap. This unfortunately rules out a smelting operation in almost any Pacific Island environment. We envision at least one other scenario which could result in both the removal of tailings from a processing plant and an increase in the supply of useful building materials at little or no cost to either the processing or construction industries--transforming a tenacious waste into a novel resource. Ongoing experiments have demonstrated considerable potential for turning acid leach tailings into dark composite facing stone, fancy black tile, novelty ceramics or concrete aggregate. The tailings are commonly very fine grained and may also serve as an additive in drilling mud. Applications as an additive to asphalt also need to be explored. The communication system must be rugged , safe and reliable, yet provide an ever increasing amount of high quality services. Presently, these systems are implemented using conventional copper cable. As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."
