The incident of Ammonium Nitrate explosion in Beirut on August 4, 2020, became a wake-up call to Ammonium Nitrate stakeholders for mining and construction regarding the deadly risks associated with explosives management. "Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

"Prior or simultaneous addition of ammonium sulphate can, not only enhance the activating effect of hydrosulphide ions on xanthate flotation of malachite but it can also eliminate possible detrimental or depressing effects of excess residual hydrosulphide . Use of relatively inexpensive ammonium sulphate appears to reduce the consumption of the much more expensive sulphidizing agent for optimal flotation recovery INTRODUCTIONOxidized copper minerals float poorly with conventional thiol-type collectors. This is believed to be due to the nonadherent character of the collector coating, which is readily re- moved by particle abrasion. Rosas and Polingr reported emulsion flotation seemed capable of resisting abrasion during the flotation of non-sulphide copper ores. It appears that the most common flotation technique for oxidized copper minerals comprises sulphidization with Na .S and subsequent treatment by sulphydryl collector. The principles of this method are available . Malghan recently reviewed the studies on the role of sodium sulphide in the flotation of oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals.It is well known that in the sulphidized flotation of malachite, the activation process depends strongly on the concentration of the sulphidizing agent, i.e., insufficient sulphide gives poor recoveries because of inadequate sulphidization; excessive sulphide also causes poor recoveries due to the depressive effect of the residual hydro-sulphide ions in solution. A major difficulty in sulphidization, especially with a varying feed nature, is to establish and maintain the optimum sulphide concentration in solution. In plant practice, vigorous control of sodium sulphide is required and stepwise addition of the reagent is recommended to improve the efficiency of the process. Soto and Laskowskim have found that malachite, depressed by an excess of sulphide ions, can restore its floatability if air or oxygen is introduced to the pulp. They attributed this to the oxidation of the HS - ions on the surface of the mineral. Jones and Woodcockuvi showed that a sulphide ion selective electrode could be used to optimize the conditions (e.g . amount of hydrosulphide, sulphidization time, flotation time) more readily and precisely than existing methods in the flotation of oxidized copper ores."

Newmont has investigated potential treatment options for low-grade refractory gold ores since 1988. After extensive R&D at Newmont?s laboratories, biooxidation pretreatment followed by ammonium thiosulfate leaching was selected for application to sulfidic preg robbing ores. A heap biooxidation and ammonium thiosulfate leaching demonstration facility was constructed in 1995 to conduct large-scale pilot tests at Newmont?s Carlin Operations. This paper presents Newmont?s experience with the recovery of gold from preg robbing ores using ammonium thiosulfate.

This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

"Hydrometallurgical recovery of metals from printed circuit board waste typically involves multiple leaching stages; conventionally, base metals dissolution by mineral acids is followed by leaching of gold using cyanide or halide based lixiviants. Alternative lixiviants for gold leaching can reduce the potential hazardous nature of operation. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using thiosulfate as lixiviant for gold leaching from waste printed circuit boards. Batch leaching tests were performed to investigate the effects of thiosulfate concentration (0.1 – 0.2 M), ammonium concentration (0.2 – 0.4 M), pH (9 – 10.5), solids content (25 – 50 g/L), and copper content of the feed material on the gold leaching behavior. The concentrations of metals in liquid samples were determined by means of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and high pressure liquid chromatography was used to evaluate thiosulfate degradation/consumption. The ratio of thiosulfate to ammonia was found to have the most significant effect on the extent of gold leaching, with the best gold extraction observed at a ratio of 0.5 mole thiosulfate per mole ammonia. The lower pH range of 9 – 9.5 generally produced better Au leaching, while low copper extraction during the first stage base metal leaching stages has proven to be detrimental to gold leaching from the residue. Thiosulfate degradation/consumption increased and gold extraction decreased with higher residual copper in the feed. An optimum gold extraction of 78.5 % from base metal leach residue was achieved with 0.2 M thiosulfate, 0.4 M ammonia, and 0.02 M cupric ions at 25°C in the pH range 9 – 9.5.INTRODUCTION Background and Aim The recycling of e-waste is becoming increasingly important as it provides certain economic benefits apart from the obvious environmental benefits. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are found in most forms of e-waste and contain especially high concentrations of base and precious metals. In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. FROM the point of view of the metallographist, the adaptation of x-rays to the study of the crystal structure of metals is of the greatest importance. While one may hardly consider the findings resulting from x-ray study as revolutionary, their positive nature, compared with the deductions we have been forced to accept from the work that had gone before, gives firmer ground on which to build and furnishes new fields for speculation. Prior to the advent of the crystallogram, the best work on the crystal structure of steel was that of Osmond and Cartaud.1 They concluded, from their investigation with percussion figures formed at various temperatures, that alpha, beta, and gamma irons belonged to the cubic system and that they showed well-marked specific characteristics and could not have the same internal structure. What the internal structures were, they had no direct method of determining; but from a consideration. of the fact that the 001 plane (that parallel to the cube face) is a plane of perfect cleavage and minimum hardness in alpha iron and that the 111 (octahedral) plane is by far the most important in the crystallography of gamma iron, they were led to suggest the simple cubic arrangement as that of alpha and the face-centered cubic arrangement as that of gamma iron. They suggested the body-centered cubic arrangement as that of beta iron. The atomic arrangement of the various crystal forms of iron has been quite definitely determined in recent years by means of x-rays and the work of Westgren2 and Westgren and Phragmèn3 has been rather conclusive. They not only determined the atomic arrangement of alpha, beta, and gamma iron but also that of the high-temperature modification delta.

"An in situ electrochemical technique for measuring the concentrations of easily dissociable oxides in slags at temperatures between 1200-1600°C is being developed. The technique utilizes a partially-stabilized-zirconia solid electrolyte (PSZ), which conducts oxygen ions, to separate a reference-gas compartment from the slag of interest. Three types of measurements are currently under investigation which yield different information concerning the slag phase and hence will be combined into a single amperometric device for monitoring the properties of easily dissociable slags.Type I utilizes an open-circuit-voltage measurement between the reference gas and the slag phase. Type II utilizes a potentiostat to apply a direct current potential step or sweep between the inner and outer compartments of the electrolyte, driving oxygen ions from the slag into a reference gas. With the use of open-circuit-reference electrodes, the resulting current-potential profile reveals the dissociation potential and concentration profile of dissociable oxides such as those of iron, manganese, and chromium. Information on the transport properties of the cations can also be generated from these measurements. Type III utilizes a potentiostat with reference electrodes to carefully electrolyze a known volume of slag by removing large quantities of oxygen ions from the slag to the reference gas. The coulombs of charge removed at different applied potentials can be used as a direct indication of the concentration of each dissociable oxide species present within the slag."

Small seams of fibrous tremolite and actinolite commonly occur in many California counties. A number of larger seams of this fibrous material were mined from 1882 until about 1955. The fibers from these mines were used for making acid filters, battery cases and fire-resistant paint. With increasing population, new residential areas are being developed in the foothill regions, leading to increased contact with seams of fibrous amphiboles. These forms of asbestos can be particularly dangerous to human health. Thus, it is necessary to determine the locations of these mines and adjacent veins and to identify the specific amphibole minerals present.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (<1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015. Amphoteric surfactants are heteropolar organic compounds which possess at least two functional (ionic) oppositely charged groups per molecule. The ones studied are manufactured by General Mills and possess one or more long hydrocarbon chains plus a carboxyl group (s) and an amino or imino group. Hallimond tube and M. C. Fuerstenau micro flotation cell flotation tests were performed on quartz and hematite as a function of pH using amphoteric, cationic, and anionic surfactants as collectors. For the most part, flotation could be correlated with an interaction of charged groups on the collectors with oppositely charged sites on the minerals plus association of hydrocarbon chains. The comparison of flotation in a Hallimond tube and an M.C. Fuerstenau cell shows that one should use care in using the latter if one excludes an additional frother from the system. Also, it is interesting to note that sometimes greater collector concentrations are required in the Fuerstenau cell for comparable flotation recoveries.

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

The Alligator Ridge Project is owned jointly by Amselco Minerals Inc. and Occidental Minerals, with Amselco being the operator. It is the latest of Nevada' s gold heap leaching operations , having gone into operation in October of 1980 after a design and construction period of only seven and one-half months. Alligator Ridge is located about 77 km (48 miles) northwest of Ely, Nevada. Three separate but adjacent ore bodies will be mined: Vantage I, II and III. The first lies virtually at the surface and is totally oxidized; the second is somewhat deeper and contains some carbonaceous material; and the third is at the lowest horizon and contains substantial carbonaceous ore. The ore is a Carlin- type siltstone which has been silicified, especially at depth, and contains finely disseminated free gold. Exploration drilling on Alligator Ridge resulted in the defining of an ore reserve of about 4.54 million mt (5 million st) averaging 4. 12 g Au per mt (0. 12 oz Au per st). A pilot heap leaching program was run during 1979. Because of the high content of fine material in portions of the ore body, one test heap of 5,000 tons was leached, after being crushed to 19 mm (314 in.), in the conventional manner using cyanide and caustic while a second heap of 2,500 tons of ore was agglomerated with cement before leaching. Results of this work were reported at the 1980 American Mining Congress meeting by Paul Chamberlin (see Bibliography). The test work clearly indicated the superior leaching qualities of the agglomerated ore, and the plant was designed on this basis. Run-of-mine ore is crushed in an open-air crushing plant using a jaw crusher followed by two cone crushers, one standard and one shorthead. Provision was made to bypass the shorthead when the ore is wet from rain or snow. Crushed ore at 19 mm (314 in.) size is mixed with cyanide solution and cement, with the ratio of the latter to the ore being 2 to 5 kg per mt (4 to 10 lb per st). The resulting moisture content is about 870, and the fines are effectively bound to the coarse particles so that migration of the fines in the heap does not take place during leaching. For agglomeration, Amselco uses a rotating drum 2. 75 m 0 by 6 m long (9 ft 6 by 20 ft). For the same agglomeration, Candelaria uses three "grasshopper" conveyors, with introduction of caustic- cyanide solution at the conveyor transfer points. Provision was made for future addition of cement slurry at these same points.

The historic centre of one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Europe -Amsterdam - is being excavated to accommodate the new North/South metro line. This new line is due for completion in 2012, and will link the Buikslotermeerplein district north of the harbour, underneath the Central Station and the old city with its gables and picturesque canals, to the commercial centre in Amsterdam Zuid/WTC. Three underground stations are being construction in the old city at Rokin, Vijzelgracht and Ceintuurbaan. The logistics of working in the middle of an historic city are demanding -maintaining tram, vehicular traffic and pedestrian access along narrow streets, providing suitable protection for the public alongside the working areas, arranging adequate delivery routes, as well as monitoring the old and mostly historical buildings for potential settlement. Safety of both the public and adjacent properties is paramount. Diaphragm walling - 1.2m & 1.5m thick and up to 48m deep - was chosen as the support system for the three deep metro stations. Challenging engineering as well as state-of-the-art equipment to construct the diaphragm walls was needed in order to meet the tight working specifications, in the narrowest locations imaginable. Extreme conditions call for innovative solutions.

The Amtrak East River Tunnels include four tunnels, Line 1 to Line 4, which extend from New York Penn Station in Manhattan, under the East River to Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City. Since fall 2015, Amtrak has initiated a program to repair and reconstruct the century-old tunnels, including structural repairs of all the tunnels and reconstruction of the Line 1 and Line 2 tunnels. The reconstruction includes bench wall demolition and replacing and installing the following elements in the tunnels: direct fixation track, traction power, signal, communication, and tunnel fire/life/safety components. This paper provides design and site investigation challenges and knowledge gained from this program.

Cuando esta asociación se fundó, en el 2011, la conformaron inicialmente 32 centros poblados. En octubre de 2011 y bajo el liderazgo de su entonces presidente, Harón Osorio, alcalde del centro poblado de Carhuayoc, AMUCEPs decide convocar a un paro de 48 horas contra Antamina y Nyrstar, los días 9 y 10 de noviembre. Las razones principales: reclamos por incumplimiento de compromisos e impactos ambientales negativos de parte de Antamina; e impactos ambientales negativos en la laguna Pacushcosha de parte de Nyrstar. El objetivo del documento es compartir la experiencia de un proceso de transformación de conflicto, para ayudar a otros procesos en marcha.

It has been within only the last two or three years that enough progress has been made in preferential flotation to warrant metallurgists in recommending the installation of commercial-sized plants for the treatment of copper-zinc-iron ores. Until the new processes had been worked out successfully, the treatment of this type of ore had proved a stumbling block in the path of metallurgical progress. Separation of lead-zinc ore is comparatively simple. A lead-zinc ore low in iron may be separated and concentrated by gravity con-centration, provided it is not necessary to grind too fine. Owing to the specific gravity of chalcopyrite and sphalerite being so nearly the same, however, their separation by gravity concentration is out of the question. Complex lead-zinc-iron ores in which the several minerals are intimately associated, requiring fine grinding to free them, have been successfully treated by flotation for the past fifteen years. Galena is easily floated, and its flotation, unlike that of chal¬copyrite, is not affected by the reagents used to inhibit the flotation of sphalerite and iron sulphides. When an attempt was made to use the methods of lead-zinc se-paration on copper-zinc ores, it was found that the depressant re-agents added to inhibit the flotation of the iron and zinc minerals would, under certain conditions, depress a large part of the copper. It was also recognized that, in the grinding of copper-zinc ore, soluble salts were generated which were detrimental to flotation unless properly controlled. The main part of this paper will be a discussion of solutions in the grinding circuit in relation to the pro¬duction of soluble salts and their effect on flotation.

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage.
