In recent years, coal mining safety has attained national attention due to several highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with 42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year (National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture,? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment (such as the norms, rules, and common understandings) that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the aggregated results from those five safety culture assessments conducted at underground coal mines. Additionally, some general recommendations for areas where coal mines might focus their attention as part of their attempts to improve safety culture are offered.

JNARDDC has evaluated bauxite deposits of India from the geo-technological point of view. During the evaluation studies, it was observed that bauxite deposits are associated with saprolite resources. During bauxite mining, various low-grade materials such as saprolite, laterite and low-grade bauxite are generated. These materials typically have low-alumina, high-iron oxide and high-silica content. Owing to their inferior quality, these materials cannot be used for alumina production and hence remain unutilized at the mine site. For the present study, the saprolite samples were collected from the Western Ghats bauxite deposits in India. The sintering studies were conducted on saprolite granules using a variety of parameters. The sintered granules were characterized, and their properties determined. The test results showed that bulk density, apparent density, porosity and refractoriness (PCE 1645–1659 °C) of the aggregates were within the range of refractory specifications. The feasibility tests carried out at the refractory industry indicated that the developed aggregates are suitable as refractory material and can substitute for calcined clay. Currently, high-purity clay resources used in the refractory industry are limited and fast exhausting; therefore, the industry is likely to face an acute shortage of raw materials, which will become more critical in the future. Therefore the sintered granules (aggregates) developed from saprolite, which is a mining waste, provide a low-cost, eco-friendly solution for the fast-exhausting resources of the high-purity clays. The developed process may change the Indian bauxite mining scenario because saprolite may substitute as a potential raw material for the refractory industry.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

As the 2012 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2012 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 332. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2012 Transactions is the third Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It is available solely as an online subscription. The new format better suits the way this material is used and, ultimately, better enables the transfer and dissemination of knowledge. The 2012 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a paper on the uranium boom in Namibia, work on improving the safety of coal pillar extraction, ways to improve the optimization and efficiency of various mine activities and the newest research from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The 2012 Transactions consists of a total of 67 technical papers (550 pages, including index), including all 18 papers published in 2012 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 64) and all 31 papers published in 2012 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 29). Additionally, this volume contains 18 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 67 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2012 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

The Coal Research Bureau of the School of Mines at West Virginia University, using a modified design of a Russian flotation device, was able to obtain a clean coal product containing 7.64 percent ash with 94 percent yield and 97 percent coal recovery. This favorable performance was obtained with the semi-pilot scale flotation cell operating as a simulated three stage unit on slurry taken from the fine coal circuit of a coal preparation plant. This experimental device, consisting of a sheet metal cyclone-like unit mounted on a U-shaped uplift pipe, uses a combined flotation and cyclone action to beneficiate the minus 14 mesh partially cleaned feed product. In addition to providing comparable analytical results, the airlift-cyclone possesses other attractive features among them being a low capital expenditure, utilization of moderate plant floor space, efficient "operation on high density feed slurry, and absence of moving parts.

The current edition of The Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code was published in 2012 and, after a transition period, the 2012 edition came into mandatory operation on Dec. 1, 2013. There is a significant change between JORC 2004 (Clause 44) and JORC 2012 (Clause 49) for the reporting of industrial mineral resources and reserves, which should be addressed by ASX-listed players in the industrial minerals space.

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

This study reports preliminary feasibility investigations for utilization of the selective carbothermic reduction and smelting (SCRS) processing scheme to beneficiate low-grade iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) mineral deposits from MN, USA. The study includes laboratory-scale demonstrations using an induction furnace and production of various products by manipulation of operational parameters. The products include alternative iron (Alt Fe), high carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn), alternative silicomanganese (Alt SiMn), and upgraded manganese concentrate (Mn conc). All of these products have commercial value and can be used in various applications as raw materials.

This study examines the isothermal and non-isothermal reduction behaviors of iron ore compacts in a pure hydrogen atmosphere and compares the results obtained during the reduction process by CO. The different phases accompanying the reduction reactions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its morphology was microscopically examined. In isothermal experiments, temperature plays a significant role in the reduction process. At any given temperature, the reduction rate during the initial stages is higher than that during the final stages. The reduction rate in H2 atmosphere was faster than in CO gas. The comparison of activation energy values suggested that reduction with H2 is more efficient thanwith CO. At the same temperature, the time required to achieve a certain degree of reduction was lower when using H2 gas than CO atmosphere. In non-isothermal tests, the heating rate has a significant effect on the reduction rate and reduction extent. At the same heating rate, the degree of reduction was higher in H2 atmosphere than in CO gas. Based on experimental data, the parameters of reaction kinetics were deduced by application of model-free and model-fitting methods. The reduction in H2 atmosphere was controlled by nucleation model (Avrami-Erofeev model), while the CO reduction reaction was controlled by gas diffusion.

Operational excellence is generally known as a management system integrated across critical functions that is geared towards continually improving operational performance. Functional areas such as health, environment and safety, quality and human resources are the focus of many corporate-wide operational excellence programs. Operational excellence also focuses on improving areas such as customer orientation, employee empowerment as well as process, and systems optimization. It is widely viewed as critical to sustaining business performance improvement. Although it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition, or even common foundation in many respects, operational excellence remains a popular term in the business world. Many organizations have developed their own version of organization excellence, influenced by such individual factors, other similar institutions or even third-party service providers. A mining organization is no different from other organizations in that adopting and implementing effective operational excellence programs can dramatically improve business execution and performance across regional or global interests. This paper brings together various perspectives of operational excellence and reconciles them for a useful composite for the mining industry. While most agree that operational excellence should include normal functions in a manufacturing operation such as production, maintenance and engineering and processes such as quality, environmental and continuous improvement, many other factors for operational excellence seem to vary from perspective to perspective. Thus, programs that manufacturers engage in may seem the same, but may, in fact, be different in key areas. This may affect organizational performance in tangible ways. Management must buy into the company?s definition of operational excellence and be dedicated to achieving it. A review of many of the existing definitions of operational excellence, explicit or embedded as part of a program, seems to yield the following common factors: ? It should help organizations better execute their processes and services. ? It should be geared towards improving quality ? It requires that the various operations should be aligned with the overall enterprise strategy. ? It should be geared towards continuous improvement. A composite of operational excellence definitions suggest that it is: ? Geared towards helping the organization achieve sustained profitability; ? tied to strategic alignment and business objectives; ? tied to solid investment strategies; ? integrated as part of the culture, process, time plan and performance; ? a relevant performance measurement system; ? extended to include all aspects of the supply chain (including external suppliers); ? integrated with health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects. And, while the pursuit of operational excellence intuitively suggests that businesses should improve, it is very difficult to achieve given the difficult challenges facing companies today. Mining businesses face numerous pressures to perform in a global marketplace such as demand, energy cost, variable cost and pricing fluctuations as well as infrastructure challenges to further confound the environment. "With the aim to mitigate excavation risks and reduce the costs caused by tunnel boring machine (TBM) stoppage when tunneling under uncertain soil conditions, prediction ahead of the tunnel face has become an increasing interest in the tunneling community. Our research topic is concerned with developing effective concepts for nondestructive identification of geological anomalies ahead of the tunnel face by waveform inversion of reflected tunnel seismic waves. The authors demonstrate that this new technique is promising in providing tunnel engineers with an accurate image of the geological situation that the TBM is going to encounter thanks to the waveforms’ rich information about the geological structure that affects propagation, reflection/refraction and mode conversion behavior of the elastic waves. By setting up a 2-dimensional numerical model for simulation of tunnel seismic wave propagation influenced by a dip layer change ahead of the tunnel face, the authors show that the waveform misfit to be minimized by the inversion process is highly multimodal and therefore propose a hybrid stochastic optimization method that can quickly and robustly converge to the global minimum. DEVELOPMENTS IN TUNNEL ADVANCE EXPLORATION Conventional site investigation by drilling boreholes helps to draw a general image of geological structures along the borehole axes but that image is likely to misrepresent the detailed geological structure due to limited sampled locations. Due to high costs and restricted boring space which deep tunneling and tunneling under urban areas encounter, many industrial and academic research groups have had great interest in developing nondestructive ahead of the tunnel face prediction systems. That means only excitation sources and receiving sensors, which are usually placed on the ground surface or on the side walls or on the cutter head of the TBM, are used for acquisition of the measurement data. The recorded signals in the form of seismic or electromagnetic/ electrical waves, which travel through the geological structure or are reflected back from it, hold the signature of the geological structure of concern, such as geological layer changes, fault zones, erratic rocks, boulders, construction remnants, etc., and therefore can be used to reconstruct the spatial and material properties of those hidden geological structures. Most common nondestructive ahead-of-tunnel investigation systems to date are based on interpretation of reflected elastic/ acoustic waves (seismic waves) and analysis of electromagnetic/ electrical resistivity signals (Mooney et al. 2012). However, due to insufficient penetration depth and spread of signals generated by radar and geoelectric sources, the use of seismic waves for ahead of the tunnel face prediction (tunnel reconnaissance) is more preferable (Kneib et al. 2000; Bohlen et al. 2007)."

"Slag density is a significant factor in determining the process efficiency of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process, where calcium fluoride (CaF2)-based slag is formed synthetically to refine metal ingots. Although there are some former studies investigating the density of CaF2-containing slags, the prediction models focusing on them are applicable only to some specific systems. The present study aims to build a model to predict density for a wide range of CaF2-containing ESR slags. To investigate density for various slag compositions, CaF2-Al2O3-based and CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-based slag compositions were prepared. Additionally, some minor constituents like FeO, MgO and MnO were added to a 5:3:2 CaF2-Al2O3-CaO slag in order to investigate the effects of these constituents on the slag. The volumes of the prepared slags were measured in a tube furnace at 1450-1550 °C using the sessile drop technique, and their densities were calculated. The results showed that for the slags, density is related to optical basicity, and therefore a prediction model based on an Arrhenius equation was built. The model was tested with data from literature, and its limitations and validity are discussed.IntroductionThe electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a refining method in which a metal ingot is remelted under a synthetic slag. These synthetic ESR slags are mainly composed of calcium fluoride (CaF2), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Other constituents like iron oxide (FeO), magnesium oxide (MgO), manganese oxide (MnO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) are added to this system in relatively low amounts, according to the type of steel ingot to be refined. The prediction of slag properties, such as electrical conductivity, viscosity and density, is crucial for the selection of the synthetic slag in order to obtain the required process parameters, like temperature, the passing time of the molten metal droplet through the slag, and metal-slag separation (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Mattar, El-Faramawy and Fathy, 2002; Mehrabi, Rahimipour and Shokuhfar, 2005; Presoly, Korp and Schneider, 2008).As slag density affects metal-slag separation in the ESR process, predicting the density of an ESR slag is important for appropriate refining and improved product quality. Although there are many studies investigating the density of slags (Akbari, Reitz and Friedrich, 2009; Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hara and Ogino, 1981; Matsushita, 2011; Mills and Keene, 1987, 1981; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Sikora and Zielinski, 1974; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010), the prediction models built are generally valid for oxide-containing slags (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987; Seetharaman et al., 2013; Shu, 2007; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010). These models were built on either the molar volumes of the constituents (Bottinga and Weill, 1970; Mills and Keene, 1987) or the thermodynamically calculated enthalpy or free energy of mixing, which can be applied to a system containing constituents sharing an ion, such as an O- ion for oxide systems (Aune, Hayashi and Sridhar, 2005; Hillert, 1980; Persson et al., 2007). Some recent studies modeled the density of some oxide slags on their optical basicity (Shu, 2007; Shu and Chou, 2013; Xu et al., 2012; Zhang and Chou, 2010)."

Reserve Mining Company, the first large-scale taconite pellet producer in the United States, mines it's crude ore at the Peter Mitchell Mire located on the eastern end of the Mesabi Iron Range near Babbitt, MN. The ore is processed at Reserve's beneficiation plant on the north shore of lake Superior at Silver Bay, M. The mine and plant are linked by a 47 mile, double track, railroad which is owned and operated by Reserve. (see Fig 1). At rated capacity, the mine can produce 33 million It/yr of crude ore, 15 million It/yr of waste rock and 1.0 - 1.4 million yd3/yr of glacial till stripping. Haulage of all mined material is accomplished using trucks. Ore is transported by tractor-trailer side dump units which have capacitys ranging from 83 to 110 long tons. Waste rock and glacial till is transported in end dump units of 50 to 120 LT capacity. Loading is accomplished by 11/13 yd3 power shovels and 7/10 yd3 front-end loaders.

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for simulating the behavior of a longwall coal production system. The longwall simulator is a design simulator incorporating both deterministic and stochastic methods to calculate: (a) the size and density of support; (b) the cutting force, power requirements and haulage speed for the loader-shearer; (c) the conveyor size, speed and power requirements; and (d) delay generation at head and tail-gates and the longwall face.

Low-cost and environment-friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and starch, have been used in flotation of some sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Certain green modifiers may be used as dispersants, flocculants, depressants, or activators. The functions of green modifiers in froth flotation highly depend on their molecular composition, flotation slurry chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, etc. This paper will discuss the fundamentals, current applications, and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC, and corn starch in valuable minerals (phosphate, potash, and iron ores) and the unwanted gangue minerals (silica and clay minerals) flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns with the more plug-flow environments than in conventional flotation cells approaching perfectly mixed conditions. This is because the hydrodynamic cavitation-generated ultrafine bubbles could help bridge ultrafine particles to form aggregates, promote the formation of flocs, and increase the stability of flocs.

The use of nitrogen in molybdenite flotation circuits is a relatively new concept utilized by only a few mines around the world. This paper briefly discusses circuit chemistry and the reason for its success. It follows the entire testing process which resulted in a sodium hydro-sulphide dosage reduction from 18.5 to 4.4 lbs/ ton (9250 to 2200 g/t) through to the final installation of an inert gas generator which will produce reagent savings in excess of one million dollars annually. A description of the various types of nitrogen generators commercially available is included.

High-energy consumption in primary aluminum production (from bauxite ores) makes secondary aluminum production (from metallic raw materials such as scrap and dross) very critical. Aluminum dross, as a waste, arises in pyrometallurgical processes, and it is the mixture of metallic Al, Al2O3, other metal oxides, metal halides, and some other compounds like AlN. Aluminum dross has two subgroups (white and black) with respect to its metallic aluminum content. White dross is a secondary aluminum resource because of its high metallic aluminum content, whereas black dross, having low metallic aluminum content, is generally disposed in dumping areas. In the present study, it was aimed to develop a simple technique to valorize aluminum black dross in the form of alumina-based ceramic materials through pyrometallurgical (calcination) and hydrometallurgical (leaching) operations. Moreover, thermochemical simulations were conducted by using HSC Chemistry 6.12 software to simulate calcination conditions. After leaching experiments, an alumina-based ceramic containing approximately 36.8% Al2O3, 61.4% MgAl2O4 with 1.8% Na2FeO4, which might be available to use as a spinel refractory in steel smelting furnaces, was obtained in the experiment carried out in a solution containing 10 mLH2SO4 and 40 mL distilled water (3.5 M). Moreover, the sinterability of the alumina-based ceramic was investigated at the temperatures from 1350 to 1550 °C. In the sample which was sintered at 1550 °C, a density value of 3.15 g cm−3 and a hardness value of 69.58 HV were measured.

Underground longwall coal mining sections are operated as sealed gobs if the coal is prone to spontaneous combustion. Sealing along the gate roads during longwall face retreat limits the flow of fresh air (oxygen) into the gob and, thus, deprives the spontaneous combustion reaction of oxygen. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have used computational fluid dynamics modeling to simulate the flow of gases in sealed longwall gobs. The models were validated using measurements and observations from the field and demonstrate that targeted injection of nitrogen along the gate roads inby the face can be used to control the size and location of explosive methane clouds within the gob and to minimize or eliminate the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of flammable methane-air mixtures.
