Ore/gangue minerals are identified, quantified, and textural associations investigated by microscopic, spectrographic, and electron-optical instruments. Mineralogic analyses of large numbers of samples have required the development of sophisticated computer systems that merge analytical and mineralogic data into useful diagnostic data bases

The new Niagara Falls Intake Tunnel, mined in the highly fractured Lockport Dolomite, encountered prolific inflows of water contained in rock seams directly linked to the Niagara River. These inflows were pressurized and, more significantly, contained high concentrations of dissolved H2S gas. The contractors attempts to control the water/gas inflows included cement and chemical grouting from inside the tunnel. Ultimately, improving the rate of air exchange in the tunnel by increasing the fan capacity, in conjunction with a pattern down-hole pre-grouting program along the tunnel alignment allowed the contractor to control the concentration of H2S gas and complete the tunnel.

During the last decade, use of freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to ease unloading and handling of both run-of-mine and washed coal during periods of cold weather has become an accepted practice by the coal industry. This paper reviews some of the mechanical means of easing the handling of coal during periods of cold weather, as well as their use in conjunction with FCA's. Factors required to promote a successful cold weather handling program are also covered. Mechanisms by which FCA's function and the influence of various substrate characteristics on the ultimate response to freeze conditioning agent performance are discussed. A modified approach to freeze conditioning is presented.

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

Slurry viscosity ultimately affects the majority of mineral extraction processes. However, to date its role has been disguised because mineral processing equipment has been conservatively designed to operate at minimal slurry viscosity. With most ores this still meant acceptable solids concentration was achieved. However, with the advent of treatment of weathered ores the resulting higher slurry viscosity (rheology) has meant solids concentration has had to be reduced, often to unacceptable levels. To permit operation at higher solids concentration chemical dispersants are employed. These dispersants are expensive and their addition should be controlled. Slurry Systems Pty Limited (SSPL) has developed an On-Line Viscometer to monitor and control slurry viscosity, whether by controlling water addition or by controlling dispersant addition. Using this instrument the slurry rheology can be controlled at the optimum level, maximizing solids throughput, and minimizing water, reagent, and dispersant addition. This paper discusses rheology of typical mineral slurries, the relationship between slurry rheology and percent solids in a slurry, and the need for rheological control in mineral processing. The effects of rheology on various process steps, and the use of dispersants are reviewed. The paper concludes with summarizing actual case histories and cost impact of Theological control.

The ultimate objectives and interest in removal of sulfur from high sulfur coal include: (a) reduction of the atmospheric load that con- tributes to the problem of acid precipitation; (b) reduction of ash which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers and the problem of ash disposal; and (c) alleviating the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. The cost of sulfur removal in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal-refining industry. The value of refined lower sulfur coal will be influenced by the national commitment to the environment as well as economic considerations.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels at Cyprus Sierrita. The predictive program was initiated by Cyprus Sierrita and P&H Mining Equipment at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine in Tucson, Arizona during August of 1996 on the P&H model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Water infiltration into subgrade infrastructure can cause major impacts on their performance. In addition to damaging the structure, water intrusion leads to deterioration of installations including electrical and mechanical components and in patron discomfort. To remedy these impacts, leak remediation is often carried out to halt water infiltration. Remediation methods include coatings, drainage, injection/stitch grouting, curtain (backside) grouting, and/or internal umbrella systems. Selection of the rehabilitation method depends on the structure’s use, owners’ priorities, its installations, structural conditions, surrounding ground, and hydrogeologic conditions. Since many factors influence the rehabilitation method chosen, a novel holistic approach is undertaken to understand leakage causes and consequences to develop the most appropriate, efficient, and reliable solution to extend the structure’s life. A reconnaissance phase combines geologic, hydrogeologic, and as-built information with detailed digital scans and visual observations to develop a database of existing conditions. This database, called a tunnelband, is used to develop the rehabilitation solution and made part of the contract documents, allowing for an informed bid by specialty contractors. Tunnelband and the preferred rehabilitation system are portrayed in contract documents, which are procured in various contract types depending on the owner’s preference and project characteristics. The pool of contractors are required to submit their understanding of this holistic approach by developing and supplying the owner with a detailed workplan. The completed rehabilitation is portrayed in detailed as-built drawings which also provide the owner with an operation and maintenance manual outlining for periodic observation of the structure and checking of its performance. Ultimately, this information is implemented into a “BIM Digital Twin” that is used by the operations and maintenance staff for long-term observations. This proposed novel framework for leak rehabilitation is currently being used successfully in a number of projects throughout the United States.

This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

"In 2017, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 6 percent from 2016 (Table 1). The value of metals produced domestically increased by 12 percent and the value of industrial minerals produced domestically increased by 3 percent. Some metal commodity values (cobalt, magnesium metal and palladium) increased by more than 35 percent in 2017 from 2016 owing to higher prices.Some U.S. metal mines and processing facilities remained idle in 2017, including three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and a byproduct vanadium production facility in Utah. In contrast, new gold mines opened in late 2016 and 2017 in Nevada and South Carolina, respectively, and iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota restarted or operated for the full year. In addition, increased oil and natural gas drilling activity led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling. Production of some industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction, remained essentially unchanged in 2017, a reflection of the limited growth in construction activity. The production of some metals, including iron and steel, aluminum and other nonferrous metals and nonmetallic mineral products increased. Overall, mining activity trended upward as the result of increases in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an intelligent system for roof' control that uses both an expert system and neural networks to improve the capability of mining engineers to evaluate roof support effectiveness for ground control in coal mines. The expert system com- pares roof support capacities with the support requirements estimated to be necessary to maintain entry stability. It does this by evaluating the results of tests on various types of roof support and establishing the maximum allowable load according to anchorage capacity and yield strength of the support. After the user enters geological information (rock properties, geometry of the opening, in situ stresses, bolt pattern parameters, etc. ), the expert system compares the predicted required loading to the roof support capacity and gives the operator advice on the adequacy of the design and how improvements could be made. A good source of the real-time data necessary to allow the expert system to make decisions will come from a roof bolting machine being developed by the Bureau of Mines. Researchers have collected data from a Western coal mine on drill bit position, penetration rate thrust, torque, and rotation rate. Using this information, two neural net- works were developed to identify different types of strata and features in a mine roof such as rock type, rock compressive strength and joint characteristics. The result is a system that can assist a mining engineer with design information that can be constantly updated as mining progresses.

The concept for a Mine Escape Vehicle (MEV) is motivated by the desire to enable personnel to evacuate a mine rapidly as the first and most desirable response to any underground emergency. Under a NIOSH contract, Raytheon UTD developed a conceptual design for a vehicle that coal miners could use to facilitate their rapid exit from an underground coal mine in the case of emergency, including fire or explosion. The vehicle requirements include the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, operate in an oxygen deficient, low or no visibility atmosphere, and travel at speeds faster than miners can walk out of the mine. To develop the MEV concept, three primary tasks were identified and executed. The first task focused on developing a realistic concept of operations (CONOPS) and associated high level vehicle requirements. The second task identified and evaluated currently available equipment and technologies that could be applied to address the CONOPS. The final task developed a design concept that integrated the identified components for the five (5) MEV sub-systems to provide the foundation for future detailed engineering design and prototype construction. The resulting MEV design concept is centered upon retrofitting existing mine personnel carrier chasses with available, mine-worthy equipment capable of addressing the MEV requirements. This approach offers a practical and economic avenue to prototype development and delivery with minimum lead-time and risk. Furthermore, by integrating familiar and available equipment into the design and CONOPS, the resulting Mine Escape Vehicles should also be more readily accepted by the mining industry.

Conveyor systems are an essential part of many material movements in all conceivable areas of application. They are used to transport goods in raw materials extraction, agriculture, and even articles for daily use. In the process, not only distances of several kilometers but also differences in altitude of several hundred meters are bridged. The layout of the conveyor usually follows the topography at the respective installation site. Particularly in the case of large height differences, safety devices must be provided to prevent uncontrolled movement. Backstops can take over this task in predominantly ascending overland conveyors and are used either as a primary or as a secondary safety system in conjunction with a service brake. They are always used when the system comes to an unplanned standstill, whether due to a power failure, an emergency stop or a defect. When designing backstops, it must be ensured in any case that all conceivable circumstances are taken into account so that failure is ruled out without the product being unnecessarily large in size. Various safety factors are applied, some of which are even prescribed by authorities. One example is the Australian standard on machine safety for bulk material belt conveyors (AS/NZS 4024). This stipulates a redundant acceleration safety device that can absorb at least 150% of the maximum load. ALTRA Industrial Motion with its sister companies Marland and Stieber manufacture backstops for a wide range of applications. Implementation of post-closure draindown estimates for tailings facilities are important predictive tools for reclamation planning and often influence jurisdictional bonding. Simplified estimates of draindown have been proposed in the past but these methods are not able to capture many of the site-specific nuances as well as operational and material parameters that influence robust draindown estimates. This paper discusses an iterative approach that relies on unsaturated flow models to predict draindown rates and associated pond inventory water balances that track inputs into underdrain pond systems, solution storage volumes, implementation of active evaporation, and necessary recirculation of solution back to the tailings facilities. Specific design criteria such as climate, facility geometry, material properties, and initial conditions, as well as active closure operational considerations that can influence draindown estimate will be discussed. Concepts presented will be valuable for operators, designers, and regulators to guide closure planning and predictive analytical analyses that support draindown estimates.

In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

Ground freezing has been used for the sinking of deep mine shafts for more than 140 years. While advances in refrigeration technology have refined the overall freezing operation, the basic ground freezing concept remains the same. This paper presents an overview of the ground freezing process and the unique advantages that ground freezing brings to shaft construction. Design and construction considerations, including instrumentation and monitoring, are discussed. Case studies are presented to illustrate ground freezing applications for mine shaft installation.

"The performance of column flotation is strongly influenced by the effectiveness of the gas sparging system. Unfortunately, field studies suggest that gas injector systems used for column sparging are not always optimized. This unfavorable condition can create a number of issues within the concentrator including lower recoveries, poorer metallurgical upgrading, decreased capacities, increased circulating loads, higher reagent consumption and inefficient energy usage. To help overcome these problems, techniques have been developed that can be adopted by plant operators to improve sparger performance. These techniques include (i) design modifications to sparger components such as nozzles, distributors and internal parts and (ii) operational improvements such as proper balancing of gas/water flows, elimination of unnecessary pressure drops, and staged injection of frothing agents. This article reviews the important criteria that govern sparger operation and provides data showing how simple low-cost improvements can positively impact column performance. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become the most popular machine design for industrial applications that require high purity concentrates. The superior metallurgical performance of column cells can be largely attributed to their unique geometry, which readily accommodates the use of froth washing systems. The wash water minimizes the nonselective entrainment of ultrafine gangue minerals that would otherwise be hydraulically carried in the water reporting to the froth concentrate. The larger height-to-diameter ratio of columns allows a deep froth to be maintained, which is essential to achieve even water distribution. Due to these unique features, column cells can provide impressive levels of metallurgical performance closely approaching the ultimate separation curve predicted using the flotation release analysis method (Kohmuench et al., 2007). Another very important feature of column cells is the design of the gas sparging system. One popular choice in the minerals processing industry is the Eriez SlamJet® sparger. As shown in Figure 1, this type of sparger operates by passing compressed gas through a small discharge nozzle. Fluid turbulence created by the exiting gas disperses and distributes small bubbles into the flotation pulp. The sparger is equipped with an internal moveable rod that is attached to a pressure diaphragm in the back housing of the sparger. The internal rod automatically moves back/forward and opens/closes the nozzle outlet when the compressed gas is switched on/off. This patented design effectively eliminates the accidental backflow of flotation pulp into the injection tube during shutdowns. The sparger can be operated as a gas-only injector or with the introduction of a small amount of high-pressure sparger water (Kohmuench et al., 2010)."

Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.

5 miles of soft ground tunnel excavation for the SAWS W‑6 project finished months early despite difficult conditions. Success was achieved using TBMs and other equipment built long before most of the crew was even born. The old school means and methods easily adapted to the conditions encountered and were key to the project’s success. Unfortunately, an industry trend is to specify more “advanced” equipment which can sacrifice adaptability or productivity for a perceived reduction in risk. This case history discusses when traditional methods may be the best option.
