Road-headers are one of the most popular mechanized excavators used in mining and civil under-ground construction. These machines are primarily used in soft to medium hard rocks. This paper reviews the parameters associated with the application and operation of road-headers and presents a method for estimating cutting performance.

"INTRODUCTION Reinforced Concrete (RC) members such as beams and columns are usually required to include stirrups to maintain post-crack shear capacity, and some may include stirrups that act as confining steel to maintain structural integrity during a seismic event (eg. NZS3101, ACI 318). To achieve seismic resistance, the spacing between stirrups is usually required to be much closer than is ordinarily prescribed for non-seismically resistant structures. Each stirrup must also fully enclose the longitudinal reinforcement with long end-hooks to ensure that the contained concrete is sufficiently restrained during reverse-cycle loading and the reinforcing bars are confined to prevent buckling. The close spacing between stirrups can lead to congestion of reinforcement within members, and can also be expensive to construct due to the labor-intensive nature of steel fixing. A possible alternative to closely-spaced stirrups is the use of fibers to provide restraint and confinement during a seismic event, although this is not yet recognized in codes. Previous experimental research (Jiuru et al, 1992; Filiatrault et al, 1995; Bayasi and Gebman, 2002; Billington and Yoon, 2004) has demonstrated that steel fibers are relatively effective in this application, but suffer the problem that their stiffness can make them difficult to consolidate within an already tight reinforcement cage, especially if they are relatively long (>40 mm). Moreover, steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is subject to embrittlement with the passage of time, leading to a steady loss of ductility beyond crack widths of 1-2 mm (Banthia and Trottier, 1994; Bernard and Hanke, 2002; Bernard, 2014; Bjontegaard et al, 2014; Bernard, 2015). Since cracks during seismic events are generally much larger than this, embrittlement may present a challenge to the long-term efficacy of SFRC during seismic events. An alternative to steel fibers for enhancement of seismic resistance is the use of macro-synthetic fibers. This type of fiber usually offers the advantage of being flexible so that consolidation is easier between reinforcing bars. They also offer superior durability compared to steel fibers and can reduce flexural crack widths (Bernard, 2016). Several recent small-scale investigations (Ma et al, 2012; Carnovale, 2012; Osorio et al, 2014) have indicated that macro-synthetic fibers can produce meaningful improvements in seismic resistance if used in combination with conventional steel reinforcing bars. The present investigation has extended research in this field by examining whether embossed macro-synthetic fibers can be used to increase the spacing between stirrups while maintaining seismic resistance."

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. 1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. Alunite has been utilized as raw materials for producing alumina and potassium sulfate fertilizer in Russia for many years. In the United States, this mineral has not been commercially processed though reserves of 5 to 10 billion tons of alunite ore have been estimated. Major constituents of these ores include quartz and alunite. The minerals are finely intergrown and liberation occurs below 10 microns. Adequate separation techniques for such fine particles have not been developed. A new method for the beneficiation of alunite ore is proposed in this study. 'Ibis method utilizes a small amount of fine magnetite upon which the liberated quartz is selectively flocculated. The co-flocculated magnetite and quartz are then separated from the alunite in a high gradient magnetic separator. Clean products, e.g. an alunite concentrate of 90% grade with 80% recovery, has been obtained from an Utah ore. Techniques for the selective co-flocculation of magnetite and quartz, the separation of the carried quartz, and the recovery of magnetite after separation are discussed.

In most current practice, the methods that are employed in technical evaluations of cement raw materials are deterministic; i.e., decisions among alternative raw mixes and alternative plant designs are reached with the aid of only "average" compositions and "representative" samples of the available raw materials. Nevertheless, cement plants are sensitive to raw-material variability, and uniformly high-quality raw materials are not so abundant as they once were. Some simple examples will illustrate how geological techniques can be combined with geostatistical and operations-research approaches to customize mining and processing systems to deal with variable raw-material compositions.

The minerals industry trend toward very flotation machines, exceeding 10 m3, began in the late 1960's and responds to the continuing desire to achieve better plant economics through improved plant floor-space utilization, power requirements, and operational /maintenance manpower heeds. In general, as process design tonnage increases, the benefits of the larger flotation machine becomes more evident. The development of the larger flotation machine can be distingushed from earlier, smaller, machines in demanding a rational "scale-up" procedure to guide the basic design, thereby producing a machine prototype capable of satisfactory-operational evaluation at minimum cost. Proven flotation machine "hydrodynamic" scale-up consideration, successfully applied in the development of both the WEMCO No. 164 (28.3 m3) and No. 190 (42.5 m3) machine will be reviewed, and the resulting economic benefits of large flotation machines in high tonnage applications will be summarized.

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, devel reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mechanics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

FMC Corporation has achieved a significant cost reduction through a new proprietary solution mining and processing technology at its Green River, Wyoming Soda Ash Facility. In the first phase, completed in October 1995, trona ore is dissolved, recovered and processed with the new technology, and then fed into an existing refining plant, replacing dry mined and calcined trona ore. The second phase, completed in April 1996, produced a fmal high purity product and increased capacity by 635,000 t/a (700,000 tpy). Both phases were completed under budget and well ahead of schedule.

A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. Hydraulic blasting provides a continuous mechanized mining capability that is well suited for deep-level mining and urban excavation sites where explosives are prohibited

The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district's 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is the largest tunneling program in the history of the metropolitan Chicago area (Figure 1). Between September 1976 and September 1977, rock tunnel contracts having an estimated cost of approximately $420 million will be advertised. During the past six months, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) has awarded contracts for 16.5 miles of rock tunnels in diam of from 9 ft to 30 ft having a total bid price of $120,261,750. RECENT CONTRACT AWARDS Addison-Wilmette Tunnel $63,140,480 Upper Des Plaines #20 Tunnel 35,749,664 Upper Des Plaines #21 Tunnel 21,371,607 Addison-Wilmette Tunnel The first contract was advertised in September 1975. This contract, described as the Addison-Wilmette Tunnel, runs from Wilmette Harbor at Lake Michigan under the North Shore Channel to Addison Street in the City of Chicago, a distance of 10 miles. The contract calls for constructing approximately 27,750 linear ft of 30 ft ID and 24,020 linear ft of 22 ft ID unlined rock tunnels, excavation of two construction shafts, and the excavation of 32 drop shafts of various diam. Two hundred ninety-three companies were notified of this contract being advertised, 70 companies took out contract specifications and 3 companies ultimately submitted bids. Reclamation of potentially acid producing coal processing waste requires a 4-foot cover, and/or treatment to allow vegetation establishment. If not planned properly, soil covering alone does not prevent refuse acidification or formation of acid seeps. Adequate neutralization enhancement prior to soil covering can maintain an alkaline environment in the soil refuse interface and prevent acidification. Direct vegetation establishment using only limestone amendment (without soil cover) can successfully reclaim aged and weathered fine (Blurry) and coarse (gob) refuse if adequate neutralization treatment is provided for the oxidized surface zone. Acid seeps, representing an "after-the-fact" verification of an imbalance of acid-base equilibrium may also be corrected using upslope alkaline recharge techniques. Concentrated alkaline recharge pools have been constructed above previously soil covered acid gob at the Peabody Will Scarlet Mine to abate acid seeps. Preliminary monitoring results (1989-1992) from a concentrated alkaline recharge pool demonstration project in the Pit 4 area of the Will Scarlet Mine have documented a 50 to 80 percent reduction in acidity in the principal recharge pool groundwater zone. A 22% reduction in acidity has occurred in the primary seeps located downslope from the alkaline recharge pools. The initial improvements in water quality are seen as a positive indication that groundwater acidity will decrease further and amelioration of the acid seep will continue.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

Electrowinning is a process by which metals, such as copper or nickel, are recovered from aqueous electrolyte solutions resulting from the extraction of the metal ion from an acidic or basic leach solution. The electrolyte or “pregnant” solution is customarily forwarded to an electrowinning "tankhouse." In the tankhouse, the metal ions are deposited on cathode plates by electrodeposition and then recovered from the cathode plates. Other processes may be employed with other metals, such as nickel, zinc, among others, to produce an electrolyte from which their respective metals are obtained. During the electrowinning (electrodeposition) stage, elemental metal is plated out at the electrowinning cathode and oxygen evolves at an insoluble anode. The evolution of oxygen gas forms bubbles which entrain strong acid electrolyte, carrying it into the air above the electrowinning tank in the form of a fine mist or spray when the bubbles break. An acidic mist is generated above the electrolyte. This mist or spray then spreads throughout the electrowinning tankhouse. The acidic mist is corrosive and a health hazard and can cause extreme discomfort to the skin, eyes, and respiratory systems of tankhouse workers, especially during hot weather conditions. Polyfluoroalkyl based products (PFAS) have been widely applied as anti-misting agents in the electrowinning of metals in an acidic electrolyte. Functionalized PFAS compounds, however, have come under increased scrutiny by the EPA due to their impact on human health and the environment. There remains need for improved acid mist suppression agents for electrolysis and electrodeposition, particularly for products free of fluoroalkyl components.

The iron disulphide minerals, pyrite and to a lesser extent marcasite, are ubiquitous to coal and coal associated rocks and are the source of nearly all the environmental problems associated with the mining, processing and utilization of coal. The iron disulphides as well as the other minerals in coal exhibit systematic spatial pat- terns of distribution on both regional and local scales and show predictable associations, most of which are determined by the geochemical-sedimentological controls under which they form. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the geochemical-sedimentological conditions responsible for the formation of coal minerals with special emphasis on the formation of iron disulphides, to illustrate the regional and local patterns of mineral occurrence within coal, to present the microscopic associations of the iron disulphides and finally, to discuss the most important single environmental aspect of the iron disulphide content of coal and coal associated rocks; the production of acid mine drainage.

"Phosphate rock contains traces of rare earth elements (REEs) and can be a secondary source of these critical materials as large tonnages of phosphate rock are mined annually. Attention has mostly focused on the extraction of REEs from phosphogypsum, which contains more than 70 percent of the REEs reporting to phosphate concentrate, with only limited work conducted on REE extraction from sand tailings and slime even though they account for 16 percent and 15 percent, respectively, of REEs mined with phosphate matrix.In this work, phosphate flotation tailings were upgraded by gravity separation and froth flotation. Gravity separation was conducted using a laboratory shaking table, while flotation was conducted in a Denver D-12 flotation cell. The concentrated tailings were then leached by nitric acid followed by REE extraction with solvent and ion-exchange resin.The sand tailings were assayed as having 2.6 percent phosphate (P2O5 ) and 198.1 µg/g REEs. It was found that the shaking table could produce tailing concentrate assayed as having 8.6 percent P2O5 and 616 µg/g REEs but with only 20 percent REE recovery, while the froth flotation produced froth concentrate assayed as having 8.1 percent P2O5 and 368.2 µg/g REEs with 63.5 percent REE recovery. Leaching the flotation concentrate with 5.2 M (25 percent) nitric acid followed by extraction with solvent and ion-exchange resin yielded precipitates with REE contents of 0.926 and 0.314 percent, respectively, compared with 0.716 and 0.213 percent when table concentrate was used.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) consist of a group of 17 elements: the 15 lanthanides along with yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc). They are rare not because of their scarcity in the Earth’s crust but because they are rarely found in economic and mineable deposits. REEs are called “seeds of technology” because of their importance to some critical technological industries such as renewable energy, hybrid cars, electronics and batteries. On average, an electric car or a hybrid car contains about 10 kg of REEs (Grasso, 2012; Radhika et al., 2011).REEs are usually categorized into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE). LREEs consist of lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pr), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd) and scandium (Sc), while HREEs consist of terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), lutetium (Lu) and yttrium (Y). About 200 minerals contain traces of REEs, but only three are considered economically significant: bastnasite, with the formula La,Ce(CO3)F; monazite, with the formula(Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4; and xenotime, with the formulaYPO4 (Jordens, Cheng and Waters, 2013)."

Sealaska Corporation, the Alaska Native Regional Corporation of Southeastern Alaska, was organized under the laws of the state of Alaska pursuant to the federal Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Large areas of Sealaska's 630,000-acre (250,000 hectare [ha]) fee subsurface holdings are underlain by carbonate, and while much of this material is assumed to be common variety limestone and lesser dolomite, at least two areas in the Silurian Heceta Limestone contain high-quality limestone at tidewater. This limestone has many potential commercial uses. On northern Prince of Wales Island, about 90 miles (144 km) north-northwest of Ketchikan, resource development at Sealaska's Calder deposit has established a reserve of 13 mil- lion short tons (st) (12 million metric tonnes [mt]) of carbon- ate rock containing an average of greater than 98 percent CaC03, approximately 0.5 percent MgO, less than 0.5 per- cent Si02, and approximately 0.15 percent Fe203, with insolubles averaging less than 0.5 percent and an average Hunter Brightness of 92.07 for the -150 mesh grind (with a bright- ness cutoff of 90). The deposit is open at depth and to the south. Ultimate reserves will likely be several times those currently established. In 1998, Sealaska began mining the Calder deposit, with about 100,000 st (90,000 mt) produced, and also completed a marine terminal one half-mile (800 m) from the deposit. On Dall Island at Breezy Bay, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Ketchikan, Sealaska has identified a limestone reserve in excess of 150 million st (135 million mt) that (based on 18 surface samples distributed evenly over about a section of land) contains about 98 percent CaC03, and less than 0.5 percent MgO, 0.5 percent Si02, and 0.15 percent Fe203. Brightness of the Breezy Bay carbonate is considerably less than at Calder. Five samples of brighter material from Breezy Bay returned brightness analyses in the high 80s and low 90s; average brightness is probably below the mid- 80s. Sealaska has also identified a deposit containing more than 19 million st (17 million mt) of similar rock near View Cove, a few miles south of Breezy Bay.
