"An industrial waste liquor having high sulfate concentrations was subjected to biological treatment using the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Toxicity levels of different sulfate, cobalt and nickel concentrations toward growth of the SRB with respect to biological sulfate reduction kinetics was initially established. Optimum sulfate concentration to promote SRB growth amounted to 0.8 - 1 g/L. The strain of D. desulfuricans used in this study initially tolerated up to 4 -5 g/L of sulfate or 50 mg/L of cobalt and nickel, while its tolerance could be further enhanced through adaptation by serial subculturing in the presence of increasing concentrations of sulfate, cobalt and nickel. From the waste liquor, more than 70% of sulfate and 95% of cobalt and nickel could be precipitated as sulfides, using a preadapted strain of D. desulfuricans. Probable mechanisms involving biological sulfide precipitation and metal adsorption onto precipitates and bacterial cells are discussed.IntroductionIndustrial effluents from hydrometallurgical and mineral processing operations often contain high sulfate and metal concentrations posing significant disposal problems, which require urgent solution to avoid serious environmental contamination. In such waste liquors, sulfate and heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, zinc and iron originate from the chemical or biological oxidation of exposed sulfide minerals. Reduction of sulfate and precipitation of toxic metal ions from industrial wastes is essential from the viewpoint of environmentally acceptable waste disposal and recovery of associated strategic metals.Many of these heavy metals are essential for metabolic activity of bacterial cells at low levels. But they exert toxic effects at concentrations encountered in polluted water. Removal of toxic metals through biological reduction of sulfates from industrial waste waters have been practiced for several decades. Metal remediation through common physicochemical techniques such as oxidation-reduction, chemical precipitation, filtration, electrochemical treatment, evaporation, ion exchange and reverse osmosis processes is expensive and not suitable in the case of voluminous effluents containing complexing organic matter and low metal concentrations. Further, strong and contaminating reagents are used for desorption, resulting in toxic sludge and secondary environmental pollution. Biotechnological approaches can be more efficient and cost effective for detoxification of such effluents. Biotreatment/ bioremoval offers several advantages over conventional chemical and physical treatment technologies, especially for diluted and mixed contaminants. Biological detoxification, which involves the use of microbes to detoxify and degrade environmental contaminants, has received increasing attention in recent years (Iwamoto and Nasu, 2001). In addition, valuable metals can be recovered from metal sulfide sludge (Boonstra et al., 1999)."

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. In dealing with the mining engineering problems, the traditional approaches of laboratory experimental simulations and/or analytical solutions are not very effective. Mainly because the field problems are too complex to be solved with a few simplified assumptions. Conversely it is also true that the experimental and analytical/ numerical models currently available are far from being able to model the actual cases. Under such conditions, the most effective mean of research into mining engineering problems is to combine the mine (field) investigations with laboratory and / or analytical modelings. It is with this concept in mind this research was initiated in 1973. 'The field investigations which began in the fall of 1978 consisted of mainly visiting the mines where surface subsidence monitorings had been or were being monitored and/or surface structural changes had occurred. From such visits, subsidence data were collected. A quick analysis of those data provided preliminary understandings of the characteristics of the surface subsidence parameters in the regions (1-5). Using those date, models of various types are being developed for subsidence prediction / control. So far, a total of 44 longwall subsidence profiles in 22 longwall panels and 10 room-and-pillar profiles in 5 room and-pillar sections have been collected. This paper summarizes the combined results published previously (1-5) and present the preliminary results of the predictive models developed.

This article presents a customized genetic algorithms (GA) with new crossover and mutation operators to solve the short-term production scheduling problem of multi-mine mineral value chains (MVC). The preceding problem consists of determining the extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively while closely meeting the quality and quantity requirements of the processing units subject to relevant technical and operational constraints. The short-term production scheduling is carried out at shorter scales wherein the operations are modeled in a great detail with large number of constraints. This makes the industry-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. Thus, a GA-based heuristic approach is developed to obtain nearoptimal solutions to the large-scale instances of the problem in a reasonable amount of computational time. Computational experiments show that the developed GA-based method is a promising way to handle industry-scale instances of the problem. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis on various parameter combinations of crossover and mutation operators indicates that the customized global mutation operator, when used in combination with the customized crossover operators, took on average 12.5% less time than the customized local mutation operator to converge to a solution.

This chapter contains the edited transcript of the "Gold Heap Leach Information Exchange" session that was held at the 1990 SME/AIME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The exchange occurred on the afternoon of February 27, 1990. The session was intended to act as a forum for discussing some of the more prominent operating problems associated with heap leaching precious metals. The information exchange was very successful. The exchange consisted of several panelists introducing and discussing different topics, follow by a comment and question period. This transcript contains the panelists' presentations as well as comments and questions from the floor and the panel. Extraneous comments and remarks have been edited out. Some wording has been changed for clarity, but the transcript is basically an accurate account of what was said. At the end of the transcript are two papers submitted as part of the panel discussion

In the search for economic mineral deposits, the need for efficient mineral or chemical assays is of prime importance. Costly analytical methods and long delays in obtaining assay results severely limit the effectiveness of an exploration program. The assay problem becomes acute once a potential ore body is located and large numbers of samples are generated in close interval drilling programs. In order to avoid the delays and high costs of extensive assays, the exploration geologist or mining engineer is likely to be required to curtail his drilling program, composite samples, or restrict the required analyses to a limited number of critical elements. As a result, the definition of the potential ore body may be less than needed for final economic evaluation. The assay requirements for bauxite exploration usually involve a considerable number of total elemental and empirical analysis. Since the Bayer process for extracting alumina from bauxite involves the selective dissolution and reaction of specific minerals from the bauxite, a direct chemical analysis for elemental composition yields only a portion of the data required to effectively describe the potential economic value of ore body or deposit. To fully characterize the economic value of a bauxite requires digestion, mud separation and mud settling tests under conditions approximating a commercial Bayer plant. A close approximation of the process behavior of a bauxite also can be calculated from a combination of the chemical and mineralogical analyses. By determining the elemental chemistry, mineralogy, and Bayer plant processing characteristics of a few samples of a given bauxite, correlations can be derived that permit defining a bauxite in terms of a given set of process conditions.

Research efforts have been made to characterize a refractory Brazilian bauxite ore composed basically of gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis of the unbroken ore has been used to describe the liberation characteristics and the association between mineral phases. The linear grade distributions for selected particle size fractions were determined by means? of a particular implementation of King's Random Fracture Model that uses the exponential model for the distribution of linear intercepts through both dispersed (kaolinite) and continuous (gibbsite) phases. The corresponding volumetric grade distributions were then determined by means of a constrained optimization technique for the solution of the transformation equation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out to determine the kinetics for particles of different sizes and the results correlated with the liberation spectrum for each size class.

Since World War II, the need for the use of explosives in construction, mining, and quarrying near congested urban areas has increased dramatically. Often times a coal mine, once isolated from a city, finds itself surrounded by residential and commercial structures. The United States Bureau of Mines and others have researched blast design to a point where ground vibration and airblast damage can be avoided. A problem still exists, however. It is the fact that people often react to only the loud noise associated with a blast although it may not cause damage. Most often it is the concussion of a blast, less than 20 hertz and inaudible, that produces damage. Public fear from the "startle" and "fright" of loud blast noise greater than 20 hertz leads to the complaints which are generally unfounded. See Thackray, Touchstone, and Baily (1975) for a further discussion of the startle effects of loud sudden noises. When blasts are designed in accordance with U.S.B.M. specifications, management generally has little to worry about with respect to damage claims. Complaints, however, still arise when the noise is accentuated from the blast. It is meteorological conditions which dictate how the sound levels will propagate. Some mines use small pilot test shots (generally one-two lbs) to determine when atmospheric conditions favor sound travel.

The San Gabriel Valley contains some of the richest and most extensive sand and gravel deposits in California. Operating quarries within the San Gabriel area mine more than 15 million tons of high quality aggregate per year. This represents about 45 percent of the total mined in the greater Los Angeles area, one of the nation's largest aggregate markets and producing regions. Popular opposition to continued aggregate production in the San Gabriel Valley is high, especially in the city of Irwindale where 40 per-cent of the city's property is made up of "excavated holes," some 150-200 feet deep. Reclamation of 70 years of mining is now an almost impossible task. Zoning regulations have the effect of depleting these vast reserves rapidly by changing the definition of total reserves to include only "legally minable reserves." All but two or three of the aggregate mines now operating will be depleted or zoned out of business by the year 2000. Some studies indicate that there will be no aggregate mining operations by 1995. Recent studies show a drastic change in land use patterns within this valuable mineral resource area over the past 20 years. The San Gabriel Valley is a classic example of the lack of adequate regional planning with regard to urban development in MRA's and represents a "too little, too late" effort by local government and industry.

The objective of this unique method is to multiply the advance rate of conventional tunneling while improving both ground control and the safety of the crew. The high advance rate is achieved by concurrent rock excavation and installation of concrete lining at fully synchronized work phases. The novel TACHUSMATIC system consists of a high-production, robotic cutter boom, an automated slip form and continuous mucking and conveying. This novel system utilizes the inherent bearing capacity of the rock that is activated by a small, initial deformation. The supporting resistance is then provided both by the rock mass itself and the pumped in concrete lining. During the hardening of the concrete, the hydraulic cylinders of the TACHUSMATIC automatically apply the appropriate support resistance, thus providing safe ground control. This novel tunneling system is practically a fully automated, fail-safe NATM that does not require highly skilled engineers and crew. The TACHUSMATIC can be used for construction of circular, rectangular and horseshoe-shaped tunnels. When equipped with the Alpine Multi-Tool Miner (MTM) systems, the machine can work in a wide range of ground and rock conditions. The use of novel, diamond-tipped cutter bits (picks) will increase hard rock cutting capabilities and will significantly reduce pick consumption. Because of its moderate cost, the novel system is an economic alternative to conventional tunneling even at short drivages. A new installation is cost-effective for tunnels longer than 750 meters (2,500 ft.) At a typical tunneling project, the cost permeter is about 25% lower than with conventional methods.

Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of the longwall face can cause great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of a field effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure, and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration, likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with laboratory measurements.

The prime movers of the Centralia Project, the surface coal mine and the power plant, private utilities are very aware of public attitudes. They have established and maintain the reputation for leadership in public service and are genuinely concerned that this project initiate the pro-grams and design the hardware to answer the question :What will be the impact of the mine and the plant on the physical environment, i.e., the air, soil and the water." So in the beginning almost as soon as the decision had been made to go ahead with the project, officials of the two private utilities, Washington Water Power and Pacific Power & Light went on record and publicly stated time and again that the overall approach of the Operators would be to do all that was reasonably possible to safeguard the environment. This attitude became part of the thinking of the project planners, part of the design of the power plant and part of the plan for the surface mine. The coal to be mined is from the Skookumchuck formation. The formation is Late Eocene and is made up of poorly consolidated marine and non-marine deposits. The major overburden removal equipment is a bucket-wheel excavator -conveyor system and a 56 yard dragline. Mining of the coal will be done with truck and shovel. The coal is processed, washed and crushed to 1 ¼ " for delivery to the power plant. The muddy water created by the washing process is chemically treated and the solids removed by a thickener-vacuum filter system.

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. "A numerical modeling was conducted to describe the behavior of overlying strata on the longwall top coal caving face for exploitation of a 16.8 m thick coal seam. Three typical structural models, including the Cantilever Structure (CS), Lower Cantilever and Upper Hinged Arch Structure (LC&UHA), and Lower Arch and Upper Voussoir Beam (LA&UVB), were developed. Based on mechanical analysis of the different structures of the key strata, and considering the behaviors of the broken igneous rock strata, a method was proposed and applied to estimate the structures of the overburden strata. The results had been verified by a field micro-seismic monitoring test. The paper provides a foundational method to determine the shield loadings for the top coal caving longwall face.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top coal caving (LTCC) is a highly productive underground mining technology which has been widely applied to the exploitation of the thick coal seams in China and other countries due to its high efficiency (Ju and Xu, 2013; Ju, Xu, and Wang, 2011; Liu et al., 2009). In recent years, a large amount of research on mining pressure forecast, strata control, and mechanical equipment improvement of the LTCC technology has been carried out, which greatly advances the field application of the technology (Liu et al., 2009; Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011; Chen and Li, 2011; Yin, Yan, and An, 2008). In 2006, the LTCC technology was first applied to the exploitation in a 20 m thick coal seam at the Tashan Coal Mine in China (Yan et al., 2011). Ten years of mining at the Tashan Coal Mine has highlighted the importance of the support management in controlling the roof strata on the extra-thick LTCC face. The mining pressure is closely related to the structural features of the overlying strata and its movement laws (Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011). However, the distributions of three zones—caving zone, fracture zone, and deformation zone—on the fully mechanized caving longwalls changed significantly with the increase in thickness of the coal seam (Chen and Li, 2011). The behavior changes of the roof strata led to abnormal pressure in the mining face and resulted in the difficulty of surrounding rock control (Yin, Yan, and An, 2008; Liu et al., 2009; Yan et al., 2011; Gong and Jin, 2008). Therefore, the theoretical research focused on the behavior of overlying strata to reveal the laws of mining pressure has important theoretical significance and practical value.Many classical studies (Qian and Shi, 2003; Feng, 2010; Yu, 2015; Yu, Yan, and Liu, 2012) had been done to describe the behavior of overlying strata in the mining process. It has also been reported that magma intrusion causes an important effect on the surrounding rock, coal, and methane (Wang et al., 2005; Liu et al., 2007). On the one hand, the property and structure of the coal seam was obviously changed by the magma intrusion and resulted in a potential danger of a gas outburst during the mining process (Chen et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2014). On the other hand, the hard igneous strata and the joints occurred with the magma cooled, causing an abnormal behavior of overlying strata and resulting in a series of dynamic disasters during mining (Xuan, Xu, and Lu, 2014; Lu et al., 2016). In fact, many coal fields in China are intruded by igneous sill, including the Datong, Shuozhou, Huainan, and Xuzhou coal fields (Chen et al., 2014; Wu, 2011). The 3–5 coal seam at Tashan Coal Mine in Datong coal field is very thick and is intruded by a large area of layered lamprophyre rock. Face falls and shield failures occurred frequently during the face retreat."

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required placement of approximately 3,000,000m3 of fill over a P1an area of approximately 600,000m in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40m. Earthwork construction was completed in approximately six months using mine waste which was placed in 4 to 6m lifts using mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10m to enable development of a mat and additional resistance to possible differential settlements under dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 80 mil (2mm) HOPE liner was used below the leach pads and this was protected from the loading and unloading equipment using an engineered liner system consisting of screened sand, gravel and silt from local sources as the bedding and cover layers, and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low grade ore. Settlement monitoring, field testing and subsequent assessments of liner performance have indicated an adequate design was achieved and the project proceeded with considerable savings in time and construction costs.

Rekindled public concern about lead toxicity has intensified the awareness of lead-bearing materials in contact with the environment and the human population. Lead's common association with other metals makes the increasingly restrictive lead standards a primary concern for a large number of metal and metal-related industries. In commercial scale demonstration tests with lead-bearing wastes, the HRD Flame Reactor process has a demonstrated ability to separate and recover over 95% of the lead as a recyclable oxide, while rendering the remainder of the material as vitrified, non-leaching, and nonhazardous co-product. Recent Flame Reactor process tests and preliminary cost data for secondary lead soda slag are highlighted.

Four massive pillar collapses in limestone mines, and one in a marble mine, occurred between 2011 and 2021 in benched areas at the Appalachian physiographic province. We characterized the rock mass at 43 limestone mines using the Geological Strength Index and, by plotting the results on a physiographic relief map, determined that GSI values between 55 and 70 preferentially occur in the Appalachian and Ouachita Mountains, which were subject to deformation during the Ouachita and Alleghanian Orogenies. Limestone mines located in formations of similar age in the Interior Plains, where deformation was less developed, are characterized by Geological Strength Index values over 80. We present the results of pillar strength calculations that incorporate the Geological Strength Index from mines that experienced massive collapse, as well as from mines with benched areas that did not collapse, to demonstrate the negative effect that a jointed rock mass has on pillar stability. We suggest that pillar designs, particularly those in which benching will be incorporated, should include allowance for rock mass quality. Because of the preferential dominance of lower GSI values in the Appalachians, we further suggest that pillar designs in this environment may require additional engineering assessment, especially where benching is intended. Lower GSI values may often translate into greater overbreak, which results in loss of pillar volume, corresponding wider back spans, and a decreased width-to-height ratio.

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.
