Discussion R. E. Rarnes (Member): The original concepts and the pioneering work now brought to the practical test stage by the Mining Research Laboratory team deserve our highest praise. The authors of this comprehensive paper rightly stress the urgency of establishing the extent to which the apparent potential can profitably be realised in practice. It is to be hoped that adequate funds will be made available by individual mining companies, the Chamber of Mines and manufacturers to attract the necessary staff and maintain the high rate of achievement of the last two years. From the Seventy-Eighth Annual Report of the Chamber of Mines and its members we see that, in 1967, with a Working Revenue of R759.8 million from gold and R54.6 million pit mouth coal sales and with profits from gold and uranium and pyrite of R307.9 million, only R1.9 million was spent by the Chamber on all forms of Research. It is considered unlikely that the associated mining companies and manufacturers exceeded this investment expenditure. Assuming a total of R4 million spent by the industry on Research and Development, this is less than half of 1 per cent of sales of gold and coal. This percentage, so low in comparison to North America and Europe, is no worse than that of Exploration expenditure which, in 1967, with South Africa's total mineral production of R1,287 million, was estimated to have been R6 million (Pretorius 1968). In a primary industry with ever present depletion of ore deposits and with cost escalation, expenditure on Exploration and on Research and Development is not a risky luxury but a tactical obligation. The potential rate of return on research expenditure into rock breaking is high. Stores consumed by gold and coal mines, members of the Chamber of Mines, totalled R316.2 million in 1967. Except for purchased power costing R42.2 million the highest cost group was explosives, drills and drill steel totalling R33.8 million or 10.7 per cent of the total stores consumed. In the paper under discussion it is claimed that the low 'effective stoping width' should greatly reduce the likelihood of rock falls or rock bursts to the extent that permanent support can be dispensed with. Insofar as this narrow cut is only 12 in. in advance of the working area which, with a 10 in. channel, is unlikely to be much reduced in width from that achieved by current methods, this claim is not readily understandable. Were it to have been based upon the regional support gained from packed waste it would have been more acceptable. Pre-developed stope drives may give serious trouble at depth and for this reason it is questioned whether a stoping area can avoid periodic sub-development blasting-the spoil and fumes from which will interfere with the rock flow and continuous mining of the rock-cutter. If, in the mining method proposed by the authors, stope drives are cut as small as possible (6 ft by 6 ft) then 25 per cent of the total tons handled (excluding resued waste) and 5 per cent of the gold will be blasted conventionally in the stope. At this stage one cannot envisage tunnelling machines economically or practically capable of such work. The various methods described by the authors and subsequent contributors for breaking waste are most interesting. It was noted that the 'bull wedge' and 'explosives' in Fig. 1 of the paper were no further from the ideal point 'A' than was 'cutting'. The writer considers that the bold and imaginative steps taken by the Mining Research Laboratory Team, the mining companies and the manufacturers concerned will eventually lead to a successful rock cutting machine with universal application largely independent of rock type. This may take many years. In the meantime other methods of improving productivity of saleable metal by rock breaking teams should be investigated even if such methods have local applications only. In 1955 the writer conducted tests with a wire saw similar to those used in quarries in the Northern Transvaal and elsewhere. Jeppestown shale, the immediate footwall of much of the East Rand gold field, was cut at the rate of 6 in. per hour using sand, water and a special endless rope driven by a low h.p. motor. A hypothesis on its application was submitted to the Office of the Government Mining Engineer in 1955 and to other mining institutions in 1966 after the writer returned to South Africa. By inference, rope sawing was classed as less promising than other methods tested in the Orange Free State Goldfields (Parker 1969). With highly resilicified hanging and footwall quartzites this was not surprising and confirmed the writers findings when testing hanging wall quartzite from the East Rand in 1955. The relatively uniform conditions, the low strength, hardness, and silica content of the Merensky Reef platinum deposits (Gray and von Bardeleben 1969) and in particular, the existence of overlying Merensky pyroxenite (Cousins 1964) make this and the East Rand attractive areas for larger scale testing of wire saws. It is envisaged that in suitable rock types the 5/8 in. slot would be advanced down dip or down a minor dip. In undisturbed areas 'faces' of up to 200 ft in length could be cut several feet in advance of breaking which could then consist of light blasting to the second free face or some of the methods now being tested for breaking waste in rock-cutting operations. A wire saw is an inexpensive and simple machine which, in some areas, could make significant and early gains in rock breaking efficiency as well as in ground and stoping width control.

"This work presents the potential for improving the flotation recovery of slow-floating sulphide minerals with the use of starvation dosages of a normal dodecyl (n-C12) trithiocarbonate (TTC) co-collector, together with a sodium isobutyl xanthate (SiBX) and dithiophosphate (DTP) collector mixture.At potentials below –150 mV (SHE), addition of nC12-TTC with SiBX improves the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite, yielding captive bubble contact angles greater than those measured for SiBX or nC12-TTC alone, suggesting a low potential synergistic effect. This synergistic effect is further studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the results indicating an increase in the surface concentration of the collector species when in a mixture. Thus, nC12-TTC with SiBX may act as an immobile surface anchor to which SiBX/SiBX2 molecules bond, increasing the localized concentration of collector species.Bench-scale flotation tests using mixtures of SiBX/DTP/nC12-TTC on a platinum group element (PGE)-bearing ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa confirm an improved metallurgical performance at very low substitutions (approx. 5 molar per cent) of SiBX. The improved recoveries for PGE, Cu, and Ni are correlated with improvements in the flotation kinetics of their slow-floating components. IntroductionShort-chain (less than C6) xanthates are very effective for the bulk flotation of sulphides (Fuerstenau, 1982), and early work (Leja, 1968; Gaudin, 1957; Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957; Taggart, Giudice, and Ziehl, 1934) indicated that the presence of oxygen in flotation slurries is necessary for the oxidation of the xanthate collector at the sulphide mineral surface to induce hydrophobicity. Fundamental research into the chemistry and adsorption mechanisms of xanthates over the years (Finkelstein and Poling, 1977; Woods, 1976; Winter and Woods, 1973) has revealed that for iron-bearing sulphide minerals, adsorption occurs predominantly through a charge transfer process. Oxidation of the adsorbed collector to the corresponding dimer takes place if the mixed potential of the system is greater than the reversible potential for dimer formation. In oxygenated slurries the rate of adsorption and oxidation of the collector depends greatly on the substrate surfaces. For chalcopyrite (Guler et al., 2005; Leppinen, 1990; Roos, Celis, and Sudrassono, 1990) and pentlandite (Hodgson and Agar, 1989) a two-step interaction with xanthate is proposed in which the chemisorbed xanthate is further oxidized to the dimer. The initial interaction of xanthate with pyrrhotite is through physisorption where xanthate physisorbs onto positive surface sites followed by oxidation to dixanthogen (Khan and Kellebek, 2004; Bozkurt, Xu, and Finch., 1998). This process is, however, slow and increased reaction time is needed to improve flotation recovery (Buswell and Nicol, 2002)."

Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. The safety factor on its own is thus not a reliable predictor of longterm stability of pillars. Keywords coal pillar, stable pillar cases, pillar collapse, pillar data base.

Synopsis This is a summary of investigations in the field of pressure leaching carried out at the Institute for Extractive Metallurgy of the Technical University of Berlin-West during the last seven years. The efficient dispersion of gas in a liquid and its dissolutions as well as the events at the phase boundary when leaching ZnS are reported. At the end two examples are given for the use of pressure leaching in the processing of smelter by-products. INTRODUCTION About 20 years ago, experiments were independently started in Canada and in Berlin on the subject of dissolving sulfidic ores without preliminary treatment by means of leaching under increased oxygen pressure. In Canada ammoniacal solutions were mainly employed, and F. A. Forward and his co-workers were successful in applying this process on a large industrial scale1, 2. This process is used in Fort Saskatchewan to produce about 15,000 tons of Ni per year. In Berlin, investigations were started on leaching with acid solutions3, 4. This process had also been used on a large industrial scale in the D.S.A., but the choice of unfavourable working conditions led to great difficulties, and to giving up this process for industrial use. Later on in Berlin work was carried out especially on the kinetics of pressure leaching 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and its applications to the processing of smelter by-products, in particular of mattes and speisses10, 11, 12, 13, 14. The dissolution of ores and by-products can be subdivided into four steps: 1. the efficient dispersion of the gas, so that its dissolution occurs over as great a surface area as possible, since only the dissolved oxygen reacts with the solid, 2. the suspension of the solid, so that the entire surface can take part in the reaction, 3. the phase boundary reaction, 4. the removal of the reaction products. The first two steps belong to the field of process engineering and will be discussed from this point of view. The aim of these experiments15 was to find out first of all the limits of efficiency of self-sucking stirrers in solutions of low viscosity with regard to the mass transfer. In addition, the effect of ultrasonics in the same reaction system was studied. The experiments were carried out in a lucite container as shown in Fig. 1. Four baffles of 0.1 d width were in the stirring vessel. The height of these baffles was adjustable. For every experiment one litre of liquid was used. An infinitely variable direct current motor, which was fixed with a hollow shaft, served as the driving power for the stirrer.

I have read this paper with considerable interest. By using an automatic instrument to assess the dust samples taken in South African collieries, the authors are ahead of the gold mining industry, which still uses the laborious method of microscopic assessment, with its limited accuracy, of the half-a-million dust samples taken each year. As the authors state, the result obtained from the photoelectric assessment of the samples is approximately proportional to the surface area of the respirable dust. However, modern theory is that, in assessing coal dust, it is the respirable mass which is important in determining the danger to health. Thus Table II of their paper is of considerable value in showing the relationship between the P.E.R. value and the mass concentration measurement. Unfortunately this table only gives the mean relationship. The important point is to know the scatter around this mean. If the scatter is small, then this mean value (for different operations) would have considerable value in converting from respirable surface area to respirable mass, but if the scatter is large, then such a conversion, using a fixed factor, will have little value. In the text the authors mention the range of values as being between 3 to 24, but without a statement on the number of samples used to determine this range and their distribution, this is a rather nebulous statement. I hope, in their reply, that the authors will give, in statistical terms, some statement on the overall correlation between these two parameters. I might add that at present a member of my staff is working on similar relationships for dust samples taken in gold mines. Another factor which may well be most important in determining the danger of dust levels in coal mines is the composition of the dust, specifically its quartz content. I understand that the authors have some information on this point, and to make their results of greater value in International comparisons of dust levels and the concomitant development of pneumoconiosis, it will be extremely useful if they could place this information on record. Even though, as I have said above, modern theory postulates that respirable mass is a better parameter to use than respirable surface area, the problem remains of how to measure this parameter with short time sampling, which, as the authors point out, is their preferred strategy for dust sampling and dust control. I know of no easily portable instrument, independent of external power supplies, which can, in 5 to 10 minutes, collect sufficient dust to enable it to be weighed accurately. Thus the authors' implied intention of continuing to sample by their present techniques and using their present parameter to report the results is, in my opinion, an entirely valid decision.

SYNOPSIS Heart rates, oral temperatures, shovels/min and number of 3/4 ton cars/hour trammed over distances of up to 350 ft were measured in samples of 6-10 miners, engaged in tram-shovelling, at 76°, 84°, 86°, and 89°F wet bulb temperatures in stopes in a mine. From the results it has been concluded that a man with an 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity of about 2. 8 litres/min should be able to work: at 6 shovels/min, or 30 cars/shift per two men, at 76°-84°F; at 5 shovels/min, or 27 cars/shift per two men, at 86°F; and at 4 shovels/min, or 24 cars/shift per two men, at 89°F wet bulb air temperatures. INTRODUCTION A number of gold mines in South Africa still use tram-shovelling extensively. In this method of rock removal from the face of the stope, Bantu mine workers load rock into cars and tram the cars to a centre gulley where they are emptied. Previous studies from this Laboratory3 have shown that tram-shovelling is one of the most arduous tasks underground. The rate of energy expenditure is relatively high, being an oxygen consumption of about 1.4 litres/min over a period of some hours. In cool air conditions the upper limit to the rate of production of the well-motivated men employed on tram-shovelling has been shown1 to depend upon their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (as measured by their maximum oxygen intakes). However, in hot conditions the factors which set the upper limit to the rate of production are different. They are primarily the ability of the body to maintain a heat balance between the rate of heat production, due to physical work, and the hot atmosphere, so that the men do not develop excessively high body temperatures8. In order to give mine managers guidance on the 'optimum' rate of production of Bantu mine workers engaged upon tram-shovelling under different temperature conditions underground a study was carried out in a mine. The number of shovels per minute and cars per hour were recorded and heart rates and oral temperatures were measured throughout the duration of the shift on samples of 6-10 Bantu mine workers in different air conditions. The results of the study are recorded in this paper and conclusions are drawn as to the number of shovels per minute and cars per hour which Bantu mine workers of 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity should be able to produce at wet bulb air temperatures of between 76° and 89°F without either excessive fatigue or danger of heat illness.

SYNOPSIS Planning for the Finsch opencast mine is described with particular reference to the proposed stages of mining, the method used to determine the limits of surface waste rock stripping and the derivation of the waste rock mining rate. Actual mining practice is described and the possibility of installing a skipway into the open mine at a later date is discussed. In addition, the waste dumping policy is referred to: this includes the cutting of slots through the hill on the west side of the pipe to increase tramming speeds. The crushing, washing and recovery sections of the treatment plant are described together with the various changes being made to the circuit. The most important of these are the installation of X-ray sorters for the final recovery of + 7 mesh diamonds, and the vibrating grease belt for the recovery of - 7 mesh diamonds. INTRODUCTION The Finsch Mine, a subsidiary of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Limited, is situated approximately 90 miles west of Kimberley, and some two miles from the village of Lime Acres, in the Northern Cape. Lime Acres is a company village shared with the Northern Lime Company which operates a limestone quarry and works near the township. The mine is near the southern end of a well mineralized belt producing limestone, asbestos, diamonds, manganese and iron ore, and the whole area has developed rapidly in the last 20 years. Power for mining operations is drawn from the Electricity Supply Commission. The mine is conveniently close to the main Kimberley-Postmasburg railway line. Water is drawn from the Vaal River through a 57 mile State-owned pipeline at present temporarily operated by mine staff. DISCOVERY AND PROSPECTING OPERATIONS The diamondiferous orebody is situated on the farm Brits, which is State-owned ground that has been leased to the Company for the period of mining operations. There are indications of interest in the area by prospectors (Richter, de Bruin and others) over a period of some 30 years and the discovery would possibly have been made years earlier but for a law preventing prospecting for precious stones on State-owned land. Although the pipe formed a clear depression on the hill where it was situated, it was overlain by some 5 to 40 ft of banded ironstone rubble which was washed into the depression from the hillside above the pipe and obscured the deposit. In 1958, Mr Allister Thornton Fincham applied for, and was granted, the right to prospect for base minerals on the farm Brits. Asbestos is known to occur in the area and, initially, was Mr Fincham's primary interest. However, during the prospecting operations, garnets were discovered and it was realised that diamonds might be present. In 1960, when the Precious Stones Amendment Act was passed, a company

The research presented in this paper investigated the practical aspects of the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were conducted on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of Pt, Pd, and Au were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours, and 100 per cent for Pt, 97.4 per cent for Pd, and 99.9 per cent for Au after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while Ni concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, Ni adsorbs at approximately the same rate as the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. The equilibrium loading of gold is exothermic in nature (Fleming and Nicol, 1984) which will result in an increase in gold elution kinetics with an increase in temperature at similar pre-treatment conditions. A similar result was found for the elution of Pt and Pd. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and results suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing due to increased ionic strength.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tonnes of which 22 million tonnes was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (North and South) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/hr, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (Define ? Measure ? Analyse ? Improve ? Control) which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for on-going fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of un-blasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance to plan with regards to actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but, this is now being replaced with a fully automated Drill Data Management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods with regards to the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire Drill and Blast process.

"In deep excavations under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock undergoes creep and other time-dependent effects that may result in instability. This study involves an analysis of the typical damage to the surrounding rock in the deep tunnels of the Jinchuan nickel mine in China. In order to understand the creep mechanism, triaxial creep laboratory tests were conducted under high stress. The creep characteristic curves and the Nishihara model parameters of typical rock were obtained from these tests. The numerical simulations, with which the creep model is developed, were performed using Flac3D. The creep model parameters were back-analysed on the basis of field monitoring data. Finally, appropriate support schemes for deep tunnels are suggested. The creep deformation of rock increases with time and axial load. At the same load level, the creep deformation of unloading is greater than that of loading. The simulated deformations of the surrounding rock are coincident with those from in situ monitoring, indicating the applicability of the presented rock creep model in situations of high ground stress. The results constitute a reference for support design in deep mining tunnels.IntroductionThe excavation of underground caverns can alter the natural stress field of the surrounding rock. In deep engineering projects under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock shows obvious creep properties and time effects (Yao, 2005; Liu, 1994). The time effect of excavation not only causes decompression of the floor and increases sidewall stress, but also leads to stress concentration at the corners of the excavation, which influences the stability of the surrounding rock in a very complex manner.Many researchers have studied the creep properties of rock. ‘Griggs (1939) showed that creep occurs in sandstone, shale, and silty sandstone rock under the load of 12.5%–80% of the failure load.’ Subsequently, much research has been published on rock creep tests, including the uniaxial compressive creep test, the triaxial compressive creep test, the discontinuity rock shearing test, and field tests (Wawersik, 1974; Amadei et al., 1980; Okubo et al., 1991; Jin et al.,1995). A rheological model is used to describe the complex rheological deformation of material. This model is based on various fundamental parameters including rock elasticity, plasticity, and viscous properties, which can be combined into a constitutive model to reflect the rheological properties of various types of rocks. Wang et al. (2014) studied the creep– damage–rupture characteristics of rock salt by applying a creep-damage model. Munson (1997) developed a multi-mechanism constitutive model of creep of polycrystalline rock salt based on steady-state creep and modified it to incorporate transient creep through work hardening and recovery. An elasto-viscoplastic approach was developed to simulate the timedependent nature of the fracture zone (Malan, 1999). Rheological models were proposed to understand the collapse of iron ore mines in Lorraine by Dragan et al. (2003)."

For several decades, the deep, gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand basin have been mined predominantly according to layouts characterised by longwalls with strike pillars to provide regional support. During the past few years, a new generation of mining layouts has been introduced. These layouts are based on the concept of grid-type, scattered mining with dip pillars for regional support. As the extraction of the gold reefs extends to depths below 3500 m, the hazards associated with mining at these ultra-depths are expected to increase to unacceptable levels. Therefore, the question arises as to, which of the currently applied mining layouts is most acceptable for the economic and safe extraction of an ultra-deep orebody. The purpose of this paper is to describe a research investigation carried out to evaluate the degree of acceptability, from the rock engineering view point, of four currently used mining layouts for application at a depth-range of between 3500 and 5000 m. Les dernières années ont vu la naissance d’une nouvelle génération de dispositions de mine. Ces dispositions sont basées sur le concept d’extraction type grille, éparpillée, avec des piliers au pendage pour le support local. Comme l’extraction des filons d’or va à des profondeurs en dessous de 3500m, il faut s’attendre à ce que les risques associés à l’exploitation à ces profondeurs extrêmes atteignent des niveaux inacceptables. Par conséquent, la question se pose de savoir laquelle des dispositions de mine couramment utilisées est la plus acceptable pour l’extraction rentable et sans danger d’un gisement ultra profond. Le but de l’étude présente est de décrire les recherches exécutées pour évaluer le degré d’acceptabilité, du point de vue d’ingénierie de roche, de quatre dispositions de mine couramment utilisées pour application à un rayon de profondeur entre 3500 et 5000m. Die tiefen, goldträchtigen Riffs des Witwatersrandbeckens wurden über einige Jahrzehnte hindurch vorwiegend nach jenen Layouts abgebaut, die von Langfrontstreben mit Schlagpfeilern charakterisiert waren, um regionale Unterstützung zu gewährleisten. Während der letzten Jahre wurde eine neue Generation von Grubenlayouts eingeführt. Diese Layouts basieren auf dem Konzept der Rasterfeld-Art, gestreuter Bergbau mit Neigungspfeilern für regionale Unterstützung. Es kann erwartet werden, daß auf Grund der Tatsache, daß sich die Extraktion der Goldriffs auf Tiefen unterhalb 3500 m verlagert, die Gefahren, die mit dem Bergbau an diesen Ultratiefen verbunden sind, sich auf ein nicht annehmbares Niveau erhöhen. Folglich erhebt sich die Frage, welche der gegenwärtig angewendete Abbaulayouts für die ökonomische und sichere Extraktion eines ultra-tiefen Erzkörpers am annehmbarsten ist. Provisions of adequate thrust Conclusions INTRODUCTION In South African gold mines some 100 million tons of rock are broken each year by drilling and blasting. Only minor improvements to this method of rockbreaking have been made since the general introduction of pneumatic rockdrills for stoping 50 years ago and, more recently, of drillsteels tipped with tungsten carbide. The combined total cost of drilling and blasting amounts to almost R0,50 per ton of rock broken, which is just short of one quarter of the direct cost of stoping or development. Rockdrilling accounts for about R0,25 of the total cost of rockbreaking, of which RO,12 represents labour costs and R0,13 the cost of drillsteels, rockdrill spares and power. Mine air compressors use over 7 X 108 kWh of electric energy a year, amounting to 7 percent of the total electric power used by the gold mining industry. The efficiency of percussive rockdrilling is, therefore, of considerable significance to mining costs. Over the past four years the Mining Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of S.A. has been engaged in experimental studies of percussive drilling. These experiments were conducted at test sites on Robinson Deep Gold Mine and Vlakfontein Gold Mine, made available by Gold Fields of South Africa, Limited. Three rockdrills, designated types A, Band C, of different manufacture, were used in the experiments which involved the measurement of the following operating characteristics: 1. Throttle air pressure 2. Applied thrust 3. Penetration rate 4. Air consumption 5. Blows per minute 6. Drill steel revolutions per minute. The results of these investigations are presented in three parts. Part I, "The theory of percussive rockdrill operation" which provides a concise, mathematical description of the performance of a percussive rockdrill in terms of its principal mechanical dimensions and operating conditions, and an analysis of the bit and gauge wear of drillsteels. Part II, "Measurements of percussive rockdrill performance" in which the experimental results are presented in terms of thrust-penetration rate curves at different throttle air pressures and throttle pressure-air consumption curves, which are shown to agree well with the predictions of theory. In addition, data relating gauge wear on the drillsteel and penetration rate to the distance drilled are discussed. Part III, "Practical implications" in which an analysis of the status of thrusting devices is made and the benefits that would derive from using uptimum thrusts are discussed.

This paper describes the development of large-scale thermal-plasma systems, which was motivated, in general, by the potential cost savings that could be achieved by their use as a replacement for the more conventional methods used in the generation of thermal energy. The anticipated cost savings arise not only from the use of plasma-generating devices but from the manner in which they have been interfaced with a furnace to process particular materials, mostly as fines. Thermal-plasma systems fall into two categories: non-transferred-arc and transferred-arc devices. In general, transferred-arc devices have been interfaced with open-bath furnaces in which melting or smelting processes carried out, while non-transferred-arc devices have normally been applied to shaft furnaces. Water-cooled transferred-arc devices are somewhat limited in power (about 5 MW) because of the relatively voltages (300 to 500 V) that can be attained in open-bath furnaces, where very long arcs are undesirable, and because only relatively low levels of current can be carried. Graphite electrodes can overcome the restriction current, and power levels of 30 to 50 MW seem feasible, even with one electrode, if direct current is used. Multiple water-cooled devices are capable of attaining similar power levels, but the capital costs are much higher. Costs due to electrode wear are lower for water-cooled systems, but expensive gases are needed for transferred-arc devices. Mintek conducted extensive pilot-plant work in which water-cooled devices were used initially but graphite electrodes were used subsequently to produce ferochromium from fines. Transferred-arc open-bath configurations were used. This work led to a decision by Middelburg Steel & Alloys (MS&A) to install a 16 MVA furnace of semindustrial scale to produce ferochromium aloys based on the ASEA d.c. arc furnace developed for the Elred process. Non-transferred-arc devices have atained reasonable scale-up to the 6 to8 MW power level, and high-voltage operation, which is inherent in such devices, has enabled lower currents to be used. Nevertheless, multiple systems are still necessary to accommodate large-scale applications, and this can be costly from a capital point of view. The cooling requirements are large, and can represent a considerable loss of electric energy. Shaft furnaces equipped with non-transferred-arc devices are suitable for the processing of materials that have volatile species, e.g. silica or manganese, or where the shaft is used to prereduce oxides that are amenable to gas-solid reactions. It is probably in the treatment of light and refractory metals that plasma technology will achieve its greatest development in the years to come. The energy requirements for the production of these metals are high, and very low oxygen potentials are necessary. These are factors that favour thermal plasma. Much developmental work is still needed in this interesting field. It should be remembered that electrically generated thermal energy is a unique temperature source that, in many instances, cannot be replaced technically or economically by the combustion of a fuel.

The world is rapidly becoming more ?green? i.e. energy conscious. Since mining and mineral processing are massive energy users, the mining industry is seeking ways to reduce its energy footprint. In mining and mineral processing operations, energy is often the most expensive cost item. Comminution, i.e. grinding, is frequently the most energy-intensive step between mine and metal. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are being installed in a rapidly growing number of ?hard rock? mineral processing operations. In the energy conscious cement industry, HPGR grinding has been standard practice for decades. HPGR is known to be energy-efficient; the question is how energy efficient? How can the energy efficiency of HPGR be enhanced? This paper reviews recent HPGR applications for the processing particularly of copper, gold, platinum, PGM-Ni-Cu and iron ores. HPGR technology is discussed with respect to energy efficiency. The harder the ore the greater the energy savings are likely to be. Typical energy savings of 10?20% can be expected when installing HPGR vs. a SAG mill. Wipf(2005) showed why conventional Bond Work index tests on HPGR product is likely to under-estimate the energy savings that can be achieved by installing HPGR. Energy efficiency of HPGR is, however, ore-specific. The biggest energy savings of HPGR tested thus far is 9.5 kWh/tonne claimed for Vista Gold?s Mt. Todd gold ore from Western Australia, a savings of over one-third of conventional SABC comminution energy. Several commercial scale iron-ore pellet feed plants install HPGR for fine-grinding of concentrate to increase the surface area of pellet feed in a manner that reduces overall energy consumption. Energy-consumption in comminution is, however, only part of the energy savings benefit story. HPGR typically also reduces the amount of steel lost through wear of mill liners and media. Marsden(2008) showed that when the energy that would have been consumed to produce the steel that is saved by applying HPGR is factored in, then the overall energy savings of HPGR is considerably greater. Johnson et al.(1988, 2005) tested HPGR in a flowsheet in which energy savings of around 50% can be expected if HPGR product screen oversize is recirculated to the HPGR. Innovative flowsheets have been proposed by Rule et al.(2008) and by Morley (2008) which are expected to result in significantly increased energy savings. HPGR applied in flowsheets in conjunction with coarse ore separation devices, e.g. ore sorting or DMS to remove barren waste from HPGR feed promises significantly greater energy efficiencies. Fine-grinding and ultra-fine grinding of ore or concentrates in conventional ball mills results in energy consumptions that increase exponentially with product fineness. Wipf (2009) presented a flowsheet in which he proposed the installation of HPGR ahead of the Aerosion ?Disintegrator? for ultra-fine grinding of ores and/or concentrates. This dry grinding arrangement is expected to achieve ap80 = 7 µm using up to 100 kWh/t less energy than could be achieved by wet ball milling. Using conventional comminution, an ore might require grinding to p80 = 45µm (? 325 mesh), for example, to liberate the valuable components, e.g. magnetite, from gangue, e.g. silica. Inter-particle comminution in HPGR may break some ores along grain boundaries thereby liberating valuable minerals from gangue at a much coarser particle sizes. Early magnetic separation rejection of silica gangue liberated from magnetite by HPGR at coarser grain sizes could further reduce downstream comminution energy consumption.

A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag.
