Metal mining operations, in particular gold mining operations, use intensive ore control procedures in order to manage the extraction of ore zones from benches containing both ore and waste material. Typical grade control procedures rely on blast hole samples to indicate ore grade. Statistical techniques and geological controls are then used to create two-dimensional polygons, which indicate zones of material designated as ore. These ore-polygons are calculated using pre-blast material locations and are generally not corrected for rock movement caused by blasting. This lack of correction appears to exacerbate the material mischaracterization problem of sending ore to the waste dump and/or waste to the mill. One Nevada gold mining company has estimated that this could be a $10 million per year problem for their operations. Using a simplified vector field algorithm, a method of taking point movement data and interpolating post-blast positions for all nodes in a polygon has been developed. Currently working in 2-dimentions (X-Y), this algorithm utilizes the movement vectors calculated from pre-and post-blast positions of targets placed in a blast, to generate a spatial transformation function for any point on the bench. This transformation is then applied to the nodes of the ore-polygons to produce modified dig lines ore polygons reflecting distortion and movement resulting from the blast. The method as implemented uses common mine planning routines and is performed using the Surpac software suite. The method may be adapted to use any pre-and post-blast point movement data available, and most mine planning suites include the simple interpolation algorithms used. This article presents possibilities of reducing methane emission to the atmosphere in working mines in Jastrzebie Coal Company by means of proecological solution. They form a new approach towards the problem of rational and effective use of natural resources both in economical and environmental respect. Power and thermal energy for underground air conditioning in mining excavations are produced from the methane, which is drained out of the mine for safety reasons.

The paper circumscribes the base metal casting industry in Southern Africa. It essentially consists in the founding of copper and zinc alloys. The challenge related to the scarcity and the unaffordable quality patterns and dies faced by the industry is discussed. New manufacturing technologies for foundry tooling called Rapid Prototyping that can possibly be used to alleviate the above mentioned challenge are then presented and their benefits assessed.

As the Platinum mining industry expands in the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex it is increasingly evident that a major constraint to development is a lack of appropriate infrastructure. Of critical concern are water resources and spatial development / infrastructure. This paper identifies the context for infrastructure development in the Eastern Limb and two solutions that have evolved in the areas of water supply and spatial development. INTRODUCTION In an economics context, infrastructure is considered to be the structural elements of an economy which allow for the production of goods and services, without themselves being part of the production process. Despite the lack of a specific definition, infrastructure has largely become understood as to comprise road and rail transport systems, public transport systems, airports, public educational facilities, water supply and water resources, wastewater management, solid waste treatment and disposal, electric power generation and transmission, telecommunications and hazardous waste management systems. Critically it is important to understand that infrastructure not only comprises these physical elements but also the operating procedures, management practices and developmental policies that facilitate the effective utilization and development of the infrastructure in response to societal demand.

Primarily ferrochrome is used to introduce chromium into steels and alloys. Chromium enhances hardness, hardenability, corrosion, abrasion and wear resistance of the steel. High carbon ferrochrome is one the cheapest sources of chromium, which finds large consumption in foundries and steel plants. However, carbon leads to problems viz. weld decay and sensitization of steels at elevated temperature causing catastrophic failure. Thus high carbon ferrochrome which otherwise enjoys financial edge over its low carbon grade is not suitable for final alloying or adjustment of chromium content. Subsequently, its addition burdens a steel maker. Hence, metallurgists around the globe have researched on finding out suitable technique for refining of ferrochrome. Traditional production methods of low carbon ferrochrome have drawbacks i.e. high refractory consumption, losses of chromium in slag and fumes etc-. Later these were overcome by adopting relatively new methods namely, metallothermic reduction, triplex process, vacuum technique to directly produce extra low carbon ferrochrome. The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

This paper discusses the current approaches to modelling the DMS cyclone within the De Beers group. Current efforts are split into short term value-adding process understanding and longer term semi-fundamental analysis of separation mechanisms. To date, the basic applied approach has yielded significant value to the group, enabling operators to focus on simple diagnostic measures to control their process. The more involved modelling approach has given rise to a new understanding of the separation field, in particular that the high density gradients within a cyclone are highly localised, indicating that separation of medium to heavy density material takes place low in the cone. The model has proven to be conceptually robust, but still requires further development and validation to become a complete modelling and simulation tool for De Beers.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

"SynopsisThe development of techniques and equipment for single-pass high-seam longwall mining in China is reviewed. Some methods used to obtain the fractured zone height are discussed. The boundary between the caved and fractured zones is generally not clear, but one important difference that distinguishes the two zones is that horizontal compressional forces exist only between blocks of fractured zone. Based on this, a theoretical method is presented to investigate the destabilizing modes of the main roof (by sliding or rotation) and is used to determine if the main roof is in the caved or fractured zone. This method considers the mining height, immediate roof thickness, bulking factor, main roof thickness, main roof strength, main roof periodic weighting interval, and vertical stress in the overlying strata. To verify the method, a representative physical model of Wangzhuang coal mine is developed. The movement of overlying strata and fractured zone height are thus obtained. According to the results, the total collapsed height of the strata reaches about 70 m above the coal floor; the first main roof bending interval is 45 m and periodic bending distance is 10–15 m; the maximum strata subsidence is around 62 mm; and the presence of a three-hinged arch causes the fluctuation of subsidence in the same stratum level. Based on the theoretical and experimental analysis, the middle of the main roof is considered the boundary between caved and fractured zone; the caved and fractured zone heights are about 21 and 49 m respectively.IntroductionThick coal seams (>3.5 m) account for about 44% of the coal rescource/reserves and more than 40% of the total annual production in China (Zhao 2004; Wang 2009). Three mining methods – slice mining, top coal caving, and single-pass high-seam longwall mining – are frequently used in underground thick-seam operations. Compared with slice mining and top coal caving, high-seam single-pass longwall mining significantly simplifies the mining processes, reduces roadway excavation, and improves coal production, productivity, and recovery. The favourable economics, high production, and technical simplicity make high-seam single-pass longwall mining one of the most popular underground mining methods for thick coal seams in China."

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutions' funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industry's concept of the unwritten `social licence to operate' is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

This paper discusses the worldwide market and cost environments for the bulk ferroalloys namely manganese alloys (ferromanganese, silicomanganese), ferrosilicon and ferrochrome (high-carbon ferrochrome, charge chrome). Annual average market prices since 1993 are presented graphically and analysed, and the main supply and demand trends for manganese, ferrosilicon and ferrochrome are summarized. The paper shows carbon and stainless steel output data for 1995, 2000 and 2005, mainly to demonstrate the rising importance of China as a ferroalloys market. Developments in ferroalloys capacity worldwide from 1991 to 2007 are discussed (plant start-ups and closures, ownership changes). Finally, the paper examines developments in the main cost factors for the bulk ferroalloys, i.e., chrome and manganese ore, electricity, carbon reductants and labour. Note that data for 2006 are estimated based on information available in November 2006.

In the irradiation of ore particles by microwave energy preferential absorption of this energy occurs in minerals having specific dielectric properties (Bradshaw, 1999). This leads to a selective heating of the various components of within the ore particle matrix. The result is a differential thermal expansion of such components and the resulting induced stresses become ideally concentrated at mineral grain boundaries (Kingman et al., 2000). Dependent upon the relative composition of absorbent, opaque and reflective components this may lead to enhancement of the inter-granular fracture of the ore particles in the initial comminution process (Fandrich et al., 1997). The potential is thus a greater proportion of free mineral grain within the fractured ore particle that may lead to improvement in subsequent mineral separation processes. As the composition of the ore dictates the result of such a treatment (Kingman et al., 2000) it is essential to evaluate the response of each ore sample on an individual basis. This paper reports on results obtained from two ore samples: the one being the zinc ore from the Black Mountain mine (South Africa) and the other a pre-concentrated sample of handpicked cobalt?copper mixed oxide ore from the Gecamines (DRC). The equipment and methods used to simulate the comminution of the samples and evaluate the level of the value liberation will be described along with the results obtained. Using King (1975), Kanellopoulous and Ball (1975), and Gungor and Atalay (1998), a comparison between the behaviour upon microwave irradiation of sulphide and mixed oxide ores leads to conclude that while the technique (i.e. microwave irradiation) is appropriate to the zinc sulphide ore, it does not seem to lead to exceptional results for the oxide.

"A laboratory froth flotation experiment was conducted on a low-grade carbonatite copper ore sample obtained from Phalaborwa in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The sample was a homogenous hydrocyclone overflow which serves as the feed to the flotation cells at Palabora Mining Company (PMC). The sample has an average copper assay of 0.59% with predominant copper-bearing minerals being chalcopyrite, bornite and cubanite. The carbonatite nature of the ore comes from the high content of calcium (28.85%) and magnesium (6.84%) minerals. Collectors used were sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate and potassium ethyl xanthate alongside Senfroth 38 supplied by Senmin. The results showed that at 200 g/t mixture of collectors (50:50), an optimum grade of 8.03% Cu in the rougher flotation concentrate was achieved at 74% recovery, while during the second flotation, 24.65% Cu was obtained at 74.4% recovery using a Senfroth 38 dosage of 6 L/t with 100 g/t mixed (50:50) collectors. The particle size and pH value of the pulp played a significant role in that the mixed collectors performed efficiently at pH above 8.3 and at room temperature while particle sizes greater than 53 µm were well concentrated when compared with those of less than 53 µm. INTRODUCTION The need for copper ore concentration research is on the rise as a result of the depletion of deposits and the advent of low-grade copper ores. Although most copper ore deposits have other valuable minerals that support their economic extraction, the increase in technological innovations as regards copper usage and applications has increased the demand for copper. Several factors influence concentration results in a froth flotation column, of which the reagent used is most influential."

The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. Bei Steinschlägen wird die Flugbahn eines stürzenden Felsbrockens maßgeblich durch den Abprall vom Hang bestimmt. Der Rückprall hängt von verschiedenen Parametern ab, wobei nicht nur das Hangmaterial sondern auch Blockeigenschaften und Kinematik eine große Rolle spielen. Zum besseren Verständnis dieses Phänomens und seiner Quantifizierung werden am LMR (EPFL) kleinmaßstäbliche Versuchskampagnen auf granulären Materialien durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt die Versuche vor und untersucht den Einfluss verschiedener Boden-, Block- und kinematischer Parameter. Le phénomène de rebond qui se présente lors de l’impact d’un bloc rocheux sur la surface d’un versant dépend non seulement des caractéristiques du terrain, mais aussi de facteurs relatifs au bloc et à la cinématique. L’article présente une campagne d’essais sur modèle réduit entreprise au LMR (EPFL) afin de mieux comprendre et quantifier l’impact de blocs sur des matériaux granulaires. L’influence de divers paramètres relatifs au sol, au bloc et à la cinématique est mise en évidence.

The present paper provides a brief overview of the thermodynamics of titania rich slags, an outline of the Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) package and its application to ilmenite smelting. Through assessment of published experimental data on various systems containing TiOx, it was found that despite considerable scatter in measured phase equilibria data for the binary Ti2O3-TiO2system,the behaviour of binary and higher order titania rich slags and oxide solid solutions phases could be represented by solution models in the MPE package. Results from the applications of the MPE model on the stability of solid phases and slag-refractory interactions will be presented and discussed. Parallels will be drawn between the predictions by the model and observations made during pilot plant tests. "Mineral texture is a critical factor which controls ore variability and is an important attribute in geometallurgy. In relation to downstream processes, it affects the fracture pattern during breakage, where rock strength is inherently a function of mineral texture. Because of the subjective nature of mineral texture, it has not been easy to quantify, especially in the context of a measurement suitable for use in geometallurgical programmes. The aim of this paper is to present the first steps in developing a 3D mineral texture quantification method for drill core and to assess its sensitivity to differences in rock strength using a case study. The methodology includes classifying the textural information using the 3D grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled method. Rock strength tests were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The case study investigates a heterogeneous polymetallic sulphide deposit and a homogeneous shale subdivided into three ’mineral textural types’. The variability is largely captured by the GLCM matrices, and preliminary trends can be observed where the shale is finer grained and has a higher yield strength in comparison with the coarser grained polymetallic sulphide ore. IntroductionModern mining requires the exploitation of lower grade and more complex, heterogeneous orebodies to address the growing industry demands. Historically, processing plants were designed and built based on average ore characteristics and therefore are relatively inflexible when facing the full spectrum of ore variability in heterogeneous orebodies (Lamberg, 2011; Lotter, 2011; Schouwstra et al., 2013). The practice of geometallurgy represents an opportunity to manage ore variability in the mining industry (Powell 2013; Baum, 2014; Yildirim et al., 2014; Nguyen, 2013). It focuses on quantifying the relationships between ore characteristics and their downstream mining and processing responses, often starting with small-scale laboratory testing. The purpose of geometallurgy is linked to maximizing the net present value (NPV) of an orebody by minimizing technical and operational risk – where ‘ore variability’ is considered one of the most significant technical risks."

Design and development of the world?s largest flotation cell was completed in 2002. This was the first 257 m3 flotation cell installed in the mineral industry and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells. This cell has a 50% increase in volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO® Smartcell? flotation machine. In the next few years it is anticipated that 257 m3 flotation cells will be incorporated into rougher-scavenger flotation circuits in many more world class copper sulphide concentrators. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No.250 Smartcell? flotation machine was installed at Minera Los Pelambres in the front of Row 1 in the existing rougher flotation circuit. This cell is followed by nine No. 130 Smartcell? flotation cells. After the successful development phase, this unit has been incorporated as part of a row of No. 250 Smartcell? flotation machines at Minera Los Pelambres. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No. 250 flotation cell, and present a case study of the in-plant equipment testing. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulphide concentrator.

The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.
