This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department?s Bureau of Labor Statistics? Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries, and Current Population Survey. Between 1992 and 2002, 3378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 to 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992?1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002 but showed overall improvement from 1995 to 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100 000 workers. In addition, 46 598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. The research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This paper is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench. This regional report covers the mineral industries of Canada and 40 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1991 (revised) and 1992. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.

"INTRODUCTION Need for More information on Spark IgnitionMany questions have yet to be answered more completely concerning the ignition of flammable gases and vapors by electric sparks. Among these one might mention the following: How do the mixture limits for ignition by sparks and by other means compare? Are the most explosive mixtures of the gases the most easily ignited? How ""hot"" must the spark be or what is the minimum energy required for ignition? Does the electric spark act merely as a source of thermal energy or do aggregations of ions, electrons, and metastable atoms formed during and just before the spark play an important part in promoting chemical reactions that ultimately lead to ignition? It is possible for ignition to occur as a result of a silent or brush discharge? How do the ignition energies with single and rapidly recurring sparks differ? What is the relative effectiveness of long, tenuous sparks in ignition as compared with intense, short-gap sparks of equal energy? What is the influence of the material, size, and shape of the spark electrodes? Does the energy for ignition change noticeably with moderate changes in pressure and temperature of an enclosed gas mixture? What order of lag exists between the occurrence of an incendiary spark and the first evidence of flame propagation? What part of a spark in space and time is most effective in producing ignition? Answers to these questions bear directly on the general problem of flame initiation and propagation and, if sufficiently comprehensive, should contribute much to an understanding of the actual mechanism of combustion."

"Trolley lines used in connection with electric haulage in mines are a source of danger and many lives have been lost by men accidentally coming in contact with the wires. Usually the wires in metal mines are sufficiently guarded to prevent men from touching them with their person or by pieces of steel which they may be carrying or their shoulders, while walking along the level. However, it is difficult to guard effectively the wires at loading chutes along the haulage ways and in spite of safe guards, chute tappers have been electrocuted through loading bars accidentally touching the trolley line.To overcome this danger the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., at Lowell, Arizona formely used a hinged V-shaped trough made of 1-inch by 6-inch lumber, that was dropped over the wire in front of the chute, when the cars were being loaded. This arrangement interfered with the easy operation of the chute, and a cut-out device for the trolley line was devised by W. R. Gibson, chief electrician for the company. This cut-out is efficient easily constructed and roes not interfere with the operations at the chutes or with the motors operating on the same level.When the cut-out is open the electric current is carried past the gap by an insulated wire on the opposite side of the drift. A hinged board drops down over the ends of the trolley guard when the slide is open and Prevents anything touching the live wires. About ninety of these cut-outs are now in use in the mine,The levels under the scopes are timbered with drift sets placed 5 feet apart, and the loading chutes take up the space between two sets. All trolley wires in. the company's mines are carried 6 feet above the rails and guarded by two 1/2 by 6-inch boards placed on either side of the wire."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of a chromatographic gas analyzer in determining the concentration of combustion products in gas produced during field and laboratory thermal oil-recovery tests. Several parameters (carrier-gas flow, cell current, sample size, and temperature) known to affect quantitative analyses were studied using a commercially available dual-column, dual-detector chromatographic gas analyzer which had been modified to provide close control of these variables. The apparatus made possible a much closer control of air-and gas-injection rates and provided adequate data for performing material-balance calculations and for determining oxygen utilization during the laboratory and field combustion tests. The chromatographic analysis also aided materially in evaluating and measuring bypassing and gas travel times and in detecting high-permeability zones that were present in the reservoir.

The overall injury experience, excluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, reported by operators, was 174 fatal and 11,357 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an aggregate worktime of 451 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 25.55 per million man-hours, comprising 0.39 for the fatal and 25.17 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 3,779 days lost or charged per million man- hours, consisting of 2,314 for the fatal and 1,465 for the nonfatal injuries. The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 148 days per injury. The number of days lost and/or charged, ex- cluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, was 1,440,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 661,290 days lost from nonfatal injuries. An average of 70,966 men were at work daily. The outstanding cause for fatal injuries was the fall of rock or ore from the back, while most of the nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, machinery, falls of rock or ore from back and side, and haulage. Injury experience at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, excluding officeworkers, was 23 fatal and 3,214 nonfatal disabling injuries during a total work- time of 277 million man-hours. The injuries occurred at frequency rates of 0.08 per million man-hours for the fatalities and 11.61 for the nonfatal disabilities. The severity rate for all injuries of 1,085 days lost or charged per million man-hours comprised 498 for fatal and 587 for nonfatal injuries. The number of days lost, excluding officeworkers, at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63 was 138,000 from fatal injuries and 162,385 from nonfatal injuries, An average of 34,938 men were at work daily an active plant days during the three year period. The injury experience for officeworkers at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 was 20 nonfatal disabling work injuries, (there were no fatal injuries reported), during an aggregate work-time of 28,694,244 man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 0.70 per million man-hours. There were no fatal injuries reported for officeworkers at non-ferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, but seven nonfatal injuries were reported during an aggregate work-time of 30,814,772 man-hours. The frequency rate for these injuries was 0.23 per million man-hours for this period.

Results of the minerals survey indicate low potential for the discovery of placer gold along Deck Creek aid for copper, silver, and gold in PreTertiary rocks within the boundaries of the Lake Fork RARE II area. Potential for oil, natural gas, coal, and geothermal resources is negligible. No evidence of economic mineral resources was found during the examination of the study area, and no assays of rock or placer samples taken from the urea showed economic mineral values. There are no producing or developing mines within the boundaries o of the lake Fork study area. SETTING Mining Districts The Lake Fork RARE II area is on the eastern fringe of the Cornucopia Mining District, which is centered about 6 mi west. It is also on the western edge of the Homestead district, centered about mi east.

This field guide is designed for use in planning pollution control and reclamation activities on small sand and gravel operations. Its purpose is to assist operators in selecting environmentally desirable pollution control and reclamation procedures based upon their particular mining situation. The guide includes information on interpreting physical and cultural factors that must be considered in planning and implementing a mining and reclamation program, achieving environmental protection objectives, and improving community/industry cooperation. Included as appendices are a summary of state laws and a list of additional readings on the subject.

The Appalachian Mountains divide Pennsylvania into two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite. The western region of the the state, where the majority of bituminous mines are located, is characterized by mountains and gently rolling hills. Bituminous coal seams underlie about 12,000 square miles in 28 counties. The anthracite coal region, located in the northeast, covers approximately 3,300 square miles. This area contains more than 20 different coal beds that vary in thickness from a few inches to 50 or 60 feet. The anthracite region is characterized by steeply pitching seams that require highly specialized mining techniques and present unique challenges for solving problems such as the mine subsidence associated with abandoned underground anthracite mines. For more than a century, coal has played a major role in the economic and industrial development of Pennsylvania, particularly the steel industry. Estimated bituminous reserves total 23 billion tons, or 5.3 percent of U.S. reserves, and anthracite reserves total 7.1 billion tons, or 97 percent of U.S. anthracite reserves. Pennsylvania received conditional approval of its regulatory program July 31, 1982. Pennsylvania's Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved on the same date.

Background: Frictional ignitions continue to be a problem facing the U.S. underground coal mining industry. Many methane igni-tions are associated with the impact of mining machine cutter bits on quartzitic material (e.g., sandstone) during the coal-cutting process. Most ignitions result in small methane-air fireballs often only a few feet in size and limited to the cutter head location. However, under certain conditions, frictional ignitions can lead to larger methane explosions and/or fires with the potential for causing serious injury or death to the mining machine operator and other nearby miners. The requirements for a frictional ignition are a flammable volume of methane-air and an ignition source. This source is usually the hot streak caused by the frictional impact of the mining bit on hard rock, and the frequency of occurrence increases with increased bit wear. Another possible ignition source is the fric-tional impact of rock on rock during a roof fall.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of roof bolting machine operators and to prevent additional cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) thru the development of engineering noise controls. This paper describes and evaluates an engineering noise control for the roof bolting machine, namely the collapsible drill steel enclosure. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that using the collapsible drill steel enclosure provided a 7 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure level at the operator?s position of a roof bolting machine.

Purpose: This training material focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people often do not get the information they need for the purpose of taking appropriate action. This safety talk presents a procedure, using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. Intended Use: This material has been developed for use in short safety-training sessions such as start-of-shift safety or Atoolbox@ talks. The information can be presented in approximately fifteen minutes and is appropriate for workers at all experience levels. While the examples and illustrations are taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. Materials Needed: The instructor will need to prepare the figures provided in a form that can be seen by the entire class. Suggested methods include the use of: (1) overhead transparencies, (2) laminated pages that can be held up for small groups, and/or (3) handouts with copies of the figures for each trainee. As a supplement, stickers featuring the communication triangle can be placed on hard hats, telephones or other communication devices to remind workers about the key to effective emergency communication. The Talk: The accompanying script is a guide for presenting this safety talk. Training is enhanced if these materials are covered but not simply read by the trainer. Examples given in this guide are from real experiences. To make training more interesting and effective, the instructor can substitute examples from his/her workplace. The workshop on "Cyanide Effluents from Mineral Processing' was held on February 2-3, 1982, at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop was sponsored by the minerals industry, supporting industries, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Utah Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute, College of Mines, University of Utah Prior to the workshop, a Working Paper was prepared and delivered to the participants. This paper was used as a guide during panel discussions and forms the basis for this proceedings document. The workshop focused on use of cyanide as it relates to the gold and silver mining industry and the froth flotation processes employed by mineral mining companies. Its intent was to discuss "state of the art" technology and provide information pertinent to cyanide use in the minerals industry. No attempt was made to advocate regulatory limits or set policy governing the use of cyanide. The principal topics of discussion included- (1) the chemistry and use of cyanides; (2) control and treatment of cyanide mining wastes; (3) toxicity of mining wastes; (4) fate of cyanide in the environment; and (5) the analytical chemistry of cyanide.

Mineral resources of the Rice Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA), in the Mojave Desert of southeastern California, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey during 1980. The study consisted of an examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas by the Bureau: of Mines and geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations by the Geological Survey. Little indicated potential for the presence of mineral resources exists in the valley floor segment of the study area. The Big Maria Mountains section of the study area has some potential for mineral resource development. Decorative building stone from both bedded quartzite deposits and weathered limestone surface rubble (driftwood stone) has been produced from the Big Maria Mountains segment of the study area. Total production is unrecorded but probably small. A 700,000 ton (640,000 t) quartzite resource was inferred and 4,500 tons (4,100 t) of driftwood stone within the study area was estimated. A relatively pure limestone deposit inside the study area contains an inferred resource of 14 million tons (13 million t). One prospect suggests a potential for the presence of manganese resources although none were estimated. The likelihood of discovering oil, gas, coal, uranium or geothermal energy is low; potential sources are not known to exist.

Miami Oölite limestone is the only significant construction mineral in southeastern Florida. Its source area coincides with that of rapid urban expansion. Two-thirds of the existing resource is already unavailable because of development. Land-use conflicts place future availability of limestone in jeopardy. However, a sufficient limestone resource to meet demand for many years is present if its extraction is not restricted. Adverse environmental effects of quarrying Miami Oölite are not severe; land values often increase following quarrying. Future availability depends upon--(l) achieving uniformity of Federal, State, county, and municipality statutory requirements governing quarry operations; (2) setting aside specific land areas for future quarrying; and (3) cooperative planning to provide for land utilization upon completion of quarrying.

The Jerry Peak, Jerry Peak West, and Boulder Creep: Wilderness Study Areas contain no identified mineral resources. Two workings, a 20-ft-long adit and a pit, were found in Paleozoic, brecciated, limonitic jasperoid in the east part of the Jerry Peak Wilderness Study Area (WSA), but no significant metallic mineral values were noted. Lenses and pods of quartz containing copper minerals occur in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks 1/2 mi north of the Jerry Peak West WSA. Similar rocks crop out along Pine Creep: in that study area but no copper-bearing quartz lenses were found.

In 1988, Albania's centrally planned economy continued to decline. The country's officially published yearend economic report did not contain concrete results such as the growth of national income or industrial output. 2 The shortfall for central budget earnings for 1988 amounted to 9% below the planned target. Losses in industry were attributed to poor management and organization, as well as to low technical standards and excessive consumption of fuels and raw materials. The construction, energy, and mining sectors of industry did not meet their annual production plans. As in 1987, within these sectors, the chromite and petroleum extracting and processing industries continued to lag in output. Both chromite and petroleum remained Albania's chief sources of foreign exchange; the production downturn of these commodities continued to negatively affect the country's foreign trade position, especially in view of constitutional prohibitions against using foreign credit to finance trade. The chief events in the minerals industry in 1988 included the construction startup of the first of four planned new concentrators at the Bulquize chromite mine, as well as the construction startup of new ferrochromium capacities at Elbasan. Also, the copper mining industry reported the completion of facility expansion at the Perlat mine in the Mid-rite district. Albania began new facility construction at the Dinamo heavy-equipment enterprise at Tirana to maximize self-sufficiency in mining equipment production. Upon completion, the new factory would double the out-put of mining equipment at the enterprise and would introduce new designs for electric trucks and pneumatic drills for the mining industry. The new facility would also increase the production of new machinery and equipment for the country's beneficiation plants.
