1. INTRODUCTION In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center required that a large reverberation acoustic facility be constructed. This facility was designed to determine the sound power level emissions of mining equipment, especially continuous miners and jumbo drills. A contract for a conceptual design of a reverberation chamber was awarded to Wyle Laboratories of Huntsville, AL, which had extensive experience in the design, construction, and accreditation of acoustical reverberation chambers. The following standards were referenced as guidelines for the design of the chamber: ANSI S1.31-1980, “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Broadband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms” and ANSI S1.32-1980: “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Discrete-Frequency and Narrowband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms.” Specific requested criteria included that the room be large enough to accommodate typically large mining equipment and that there be adequate acoustical modal density in the frequency range of interest. It was also required that the room dimensions would support broadband acoustical measurements down to the 100 Hz third octave band. With the closing of the Bureau of Mines in 1996, this reverberation chamber lay dormant for a number of years. However, this facility is now part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). One of NIOSH’s missions is to decrease noise induced hearing loss among the nation’s mineworkers. To this end, PRL researchers are refurbishing and instrumenting this reverberation chamber to facilitate assessment of the various engineering controls being developed to decrease the sound power level emissions of mining equipment. Early on, this work has sought to bring the chamber up to the level of ISO 3743-21 standard for engineering grade measurements for broad-band noise, with a longer range goal of improving the lab to meet the requirements of ISO 37412standard for broadband precision grade measurements. 2. DESIGN OF THE REVERBERATION CHAMBER The nominal room dimensions are 18.3 meters long by 10.3 meters wide with a height of 6.7 meters. The chamber volume is 1,286 cubic meters. These dimensions are important, as few reverberation facilities are large enough to test typically huge mining equipment. The floor is poured concrete with a sealer to make it acoustically reflective. The walls are built of hollow concrete block, 16 inches long x 8 inches high by 12inches thick. It is generally accepted that typical coalbed gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are sorbed (both adsorbed and absorbed) in the coal matrix causing it to swell and resulting in local stress and strain variations in a coalbed confined under overburden pressure. The swelling, interactions of gases within the coal matrix and the resultant changes in the permeability, sorption, gas flow mechanics in the reservoir, and stress state of the coal can impact a number of reservoir-related factors. These include effective production of coalbed methane, degasification of future mining areas by drilling horizontal and vertical degasification wells, injection of CO2 as an enhanced coalbed methane recovery technique, and concurrent CO2 sequestration. Such information can also provide an understanding of the mechanisms behind gas outbursts in underground coal mines. The spatiotemporal volumetric strains in a consolidated Pittsburgh seam coal sample were evaluated while both confining pressure and carbon dioxide (C02) pore pressure were increased to keep a constant positive effective stress on the sample. The changes intemal to the sample were evaluated by maps of density and atomic number determined by dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Early-time images, as soon as CO2 was introduced, were also used to calculate the macro porosity in the coal sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographic images of the polished section of the coal sample at X-ray CT image location were used to identify the microlitho types and microstructures. The CO2 sorption-associated swelling and volumetric strains in consolidated coal under constant effective stress are heterogeneous processes depending on the litho types present. In the time scale of the experiment, vitrite showed the highest degree of swelling due to dissolution of CO2, while the clay (kaolinite) and inertite region was compressed in response. The volumetric strains associated with swelling and compression were between ± 15% depending on the location. Although the effective stress on the sample was constant, it varied within the sample as a result of the intemal stresses created by gas sorption-related structural changes. SEM images and porosity calculations revealed that the kaolinite and inertite bearing layer was highly porous, which enabled the fastest CO2 uptake and the highest degree of compression. Data released by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis show continued gradual change in the real GNP's rate of growth in 1984, which has eased from an annual growth rate of 10.1 percent in the first quarter lo 7.1 percent in the second quarter, and then to 2.7 percent in the third quarter. The automobile industry strike in the last half of September had only a small effect, estimated at less than a 0.1 percentage point reduction in the growth rate. Among the components that comprise the GNP, personal consumption and fixed investment grew at lower real rates in the third quarter than in the second quarter, while net exports decreased. Personal consumption expenditures increased $0.4 billion in the third quarter, compared with an increase of $20.1 billion in the second quarter. Nonresidential fixed investment increased $3.9 billion in the third quarter, compared with $9.6 billion in the second quarter. The other component of fixed investment--residential investment--increased from $60.8 billion in the second quarter to $61.2 billion in the third quarter. Real net exports of goods and services decreased $1 1.3 billion in the third quarter, compared with a $3.1 billion decrease in the second quarter. Although exports increased from an annual rate of $144.7 billion to $150.2 billion, imports increased much more, from an annual rate of $1 56.2. billion to $172.8 billion (table 1).

The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.

This report has been prepared because little detailed information has been published on the production and use of anthracite producer gas for industrial-process and brick-kiln heating. To obtain this information, an investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with a building-brick manufacturer (firing both periodic and tunnel kilns with anthracite producer gas) and with a manufacturer of anthracite-gas producers. In addition to a study of available plant records, 2 weeks was spent in systematic observation and measurement during regular operation of the Hazleton Brick Co. plant, Hazleton, Pa., in July 1953. This report presents the results of this investigation and a description of producer and periodic-kiln equipment, operating procedures, and labor requirements. A summary of the conditions of producer and kiln operation is given for the 2-week observation and for the 11 preceding months. The two 10-foot standard anthracite-gas producers consumed 301 tons of Rice and Buckwheat No. 1 anthracite, as delivered, averaging over 13,000 B.t.u. per dry pound during the 2-week period, with a producer hot-gas efficiency of 95 percent, at an average gas offtake temperature of 5400 F. The yield of gas5/ of 153 gross B.t.u. per cubic foot amounted to 140,000 cubic feet per ton of fuel as fired, or 73,500 cubic feet per kiln heating hour, which was sufficient for kiln requirements.

A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

Results of the mineral resource study of the Upper Priest Lake RARE II study area indicate a low potential for the discovery and economic recovery of silver and lead in the Prichard Formation near contacts with the Kaniksu Batholith in the vicinity of the Mountain Chief Mine (fig. 1). Silver and lead minerals locally occur disseminated and in irregular quartz fissure-fillings in the Prichard Formation. Between 18^6 and 1967, 105 lode raining claims were located in the study area. The area was designated for "further planning" in the Final Environmental statement but was later changed to "nonwilderness" by President Carter after work was scheduled for the area.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

In 1984 and 1986, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral appraisal of the 315,000-acre Lemhi Range study area. This area is located in Lemhi and Custer Counties, about 25 mi south of Salmon, Idaho, and is in the Northern Rocky Mountain physiographic province, Topography is generally rugged with elevations ranging from 5,600 ft to about 11,350 ft above sea level. Since the 1880's, approximately 500 mining claims have been located within the study area; about 400 were current at the time of this investigation. Also, part or all of 12 patented mining claims are in the study area. During Bureau field work, forty-four mineralized sites were examined. The sites had been explored by 80 adits, 14 shafts, and about 140 pits and trenches. At least five properties in the study area have had significant production; the adjacent Mohawk, Grace Phelan, and Snowbird claims had a combined total of 136,000 oz of silver and 67,000 lb of lead; production at the Brown Bull was about 14,800 oz of silver and 115,000 lb of lead; the Portland mine yielded an unrecorded amount of silver. The Hilltop mine, located a few hundred feet outside the study area, produced 125,000 oz of silver, 2.7 million lb of lead, 87,000 lb of zinc, and 62,000 lb of copper from mineralized zones that might extend into the study area. More than 10,000 lb of copper were produced at the Blue Jay mine from workings located about 1,000 ft outside the study area. The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal the presence of identified resources in the study area. However, several areas contain mineralized sites and are known occurrences. Some of these warrant additional work to further delineate the mineralization and possibly determine identified resources.

Many longwall mines rely on methane drainage to supplement traditional fan-based ventilation systems. However, the surface production facilities for methane drainage systems, including gob gas ventholes, are commonly located in remote locations, sometimes without convenient access to electrical power, and they may be monitored infrequently. The first evidence that a methane drainage system may not be operating efficiently, or not operating at all, can be an increase in methane concentrations at a return air shaft or underground where the workforce is exposed to the risk of a methane explosion. A solar powered, remote gob gas venthole monitoring and cellular telephone-based real-time data transmission system has been developed and successfully field tested by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to address this problem. With this system, individual methane drainage boreholes can be monitored from the mine office to determine current operational performance parameters, as well as review past data to anticipate maintenance needs and troubleshoot operational problems.

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron also is present in the mill circuit, and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well-known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by even perfunctory examination. First of all the mine contributes metallic iron, then the coarse-crushing machines add their share, and finally the fine-grinding medium its portion. If the grinding is with cast-iron balls the amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. Thus it is that much more metallic iron is present than would be indicated by noting the ball consumption. An estimate that the total amount of metallics is twice that supplied by the balls and liners might not be far amiss.That copper sulphate plates out on iron in an acid solution is well known, but since flotation is practiced commonly in solutions where acid has not been added this reaction has not been given sufficient thought.This problem has been the basis of a study undertaken jointly by the Mississippi Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, at Rolla, Missouri. Its importance may be understood better when the tonnage of zinc ores now being treated by flotation in this country is considered. According to Gaudin4 5,536,244 tons of zinc or were treated by flotation during 1927. In these operations copper sulphate was employed as an activating agent; the amount per ton averaged 0.81 pound for straight sulphide zinc ores and 1.16 pounds for complex ores. Since such large quantities of zinc ore are treated by flotation and since metallic iron is always present, the importance of studying their reactions on each other and the effect of their reaction"

The advance-and-relieve method benefits from lateral destressing associated with mining in laminated rocks and a high horizontal stress regime. This stress control method is based on measurements showing that occurrence of rock failure in the roof and floor of an entry (or caving of roof strata in a panel gob) results in redistribution of stresses in adjacent entries. By locating other entries within the shadow zone of the first entry (or gob), improvements in stability can be achieved. Numerical modeling proved useful in studying the basic mechanics of lateral relief while investigating the sensitivity of results to different geologic and mining parameters using controlled experiments. It was shown that failure of rocks near an entry results in redistribution of horizontal stress and shifting of the stress to higher horizons. Measurements from two mines are consistent in showing significant horizontal stress reductions in comparison with the far-field stress regime within the destressed zone. Although the far-field stress regime is very anisotropic, these measurements show near-equal secondary principal horizontal stresses, or perhaps a switch in orientation, as a result of destressing. Stress relief is achieved through lateral movement and relaxation of rocks along weak bedding planes toward adjacent caved zones (or softened zone). Because of cave geometry in the advancing panel, horizontal stress concentrations occur near the cave line both in front of the face and to the sides. The horizontal stress concentration reaches 1.7 times the far-field stress ahead of the face. This stress increase is significant and may cause structural damage in this zone benefiting from additional support. In the next advancing panel located within the shadow zone of the gob, horizontal stresses are significantly reduced in the roof (by 50%). Thus, the stability of future advancing panel can be improved through prudent layout designs and sequencing. The width of the relief zone is significantly influenced by the height of the softened (or cave zone) and rock mass properties.

This report summarizes the results of a one-year agreement for research on the electromagnetic environment in coal mines, which was conceived as the beginning of a long term cooperative program between ITS and the Bureau of Mines. The concepts on which it was originally based are a result of the report on mine rescue and survival by the Committee on Mine Rescue and Survival Techniques of the National Academy of Engineering, dated March 1970. This report drew particular attention to the need for improved communications during and following mine disasters. In particular, the outstanding problems identified were the location of, and communication with, trapped miners. Some tentative solutions, generally involving long-wave electromagnetic signals, were offered. Consideration of the problems of disaster location and communication soon leads to consideration of the communications techniques (or lack of them) for use under normal mining conditions. In particular, if a disaster communication and/or location system is to be readily available and operable under disaster conditions, it should also be usable during mining operations. In this way operators can become familiar enough with the system to operate it during disaster conditions, as well as provide a mechanism for regular testing.

After emphasizing the importance of quantitative rock mass classifications in mining, originally directed to selection of rock support measures, but subsequently to estimates of rock mass properties such as rock mass strength and rock mass modulus of deformation, current attention calls for a classification specifically for rock mass excavability by tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are used extensively in tunneling as well as in the mining industry. This paper introduces the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index for predicting excavability of rock masses by TBMs using a quantification of machine performance and rock mass conditions. The RME index is based on five input parameters aimed at relating rock mass behavior and machine characteristics: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of the rock material, (2) drillability/abrasivity, (3) rock mass jointing at mine drift face, (4) standup time of the excavation, and (5) groundwater inflow. Development of the RME index entailed the collection of extensive data from more than 28 km of tunnels and some 400 case records from projects in Spain involving double-shield TBMs. In the process, a number of statistical correlations have been established between RME and such output parameters as degree of machine utilization, advance and penetration rates, thrust and torque of the cutterhead, and the specific energy of excavation. It was found that the RME index provides a particularly significant correlation for predicting the average rate of advance (m/day). In essence, the RME index is a classification system that features interaction of rock mass conditions with boring machine characteristics for use in the early stages of a project. It should be noted that the RME index does not replace the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) or Q-systems as used in mining and tunneling; indeed, one of the RME input parameters, standup time, is determined from the RMR. However, the approach presented introduces a specialized tool relevant to excavating tunnels and drifts. Possible applications to hard-rock mining are explored.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

The primary objective of this study is to "evaluate the influences of different equipment systems on prime farmland subsoil compaction due to surface mining in the Midwest." The study is centered on four mine sites each utilizing a different combination of equipment for soil removal and replacement. Subsoil compaction is the primary focus of this research effort. Primarily owing to physical location, it is difficult to alleviate the increased compaction directly below the topsoil in reclaimed soils. Different equipment combinations cause varied effects when soils are replaced during surface mining activities. By collecting field data within a statistical framework, the effects of different equipment combinations on subsoil compaction can be evaluated and conclusions drawn. This research effort evaluates a comparison of natural and replaced soils by moist bulk density data. This comparison centers on changes in bulk density and texture to a depth of 48 inches. For each study site a complete case study is provided for use in data correlation and interpretation. Basis for this research effort centers on four (4) major experiment designs: o Comparison of soil bulk density values for three distinct equipment systems evaluated on the same general soil types (i.e. scrapers, bucket-wheel excavators and end-dump haulback); o Evaluation of the effects of soil replacement in repeated lifts using scrapers; o Presentation of bulk density values representing soil compaction for four (4) equipment systems (i.e. bucket-wheel excavators, draglines, scrapers and end-dump haul back) on four separate mine sites in the midwest; o A prediction analysis model is developed for subsoil bulk density following reclamation based on equipment characteristics and a statistical evaluation of texture. The soil data base of information includes data from the 1982 Bureau of Mines study entitled, "Impact of Surface Mining on Soil Compaction in the Midwest" as well as data from this research project. The final report is synthesized through an analysis of field data, statistical analysis and literature review. The final report focuses on the interpretation of results for practical application by government and industry.

"ABSTRACTIn exothermic and endothermic catalytic reactions, control of the temperature is of utmost importance. Basic calculations are developed for determining catalyst volumes of various types of reactors that give particular temperature distributions, and the individual designs are compared.INTRODUCTIONA narrow range of permissible operating temperatures characterizes many, catalytic reactions, and yields of the desired product are reduced sharply if operating temperatures fall outside of this optimum range. In order to achieve close temperature control, reactors with internal heat exchange have been developed in which thin layers of catalyst are located between cooling surfaces.The temperature distribution for an exothermic reaction in such a thin catalyst layer is shown in figure 1. Reactive gases flow downward through the catalyst section, which is 2so wide. It is assumed that a constant amount of heat is generated per unit of bulk catalyst volume, and that this heat is entirely removed through the walls. Consequently, except for a short section at the entrance of the reactor, the heat of reaction is not available for raising the temperature of the gases. Thus, at all points equidistant from the axis, the temperature is the same throughout the entire reactor. At the middle of the gas stream, the temperature is designated as uo. Traveling radially from this point, the temperature decreases because of the removal of heat through the walls and reaches, in the vicinity of the cooling surface, the value u1. Over a relatively narrow zone of width, b, the temperature falls to the value u2 at the cooling surface. Because inadequate data are available on heat-transfer coefficients for a gas flowing through a porous bed, and also because the narrow zone, b, is probably without effect on the reaction by virtue of its low temperature, the temperature drop in this zone at the cooling wall was disregarded. The following calculations were made on the basis of the temperature drop (u0 - u1) resulting from heat conduction within the main body of the catalyst bed only."

The deformation modulus of coal mine pillars theoretically can be reduced by drilling holes in advance of the mining face. This reduction of modulus along the edge of the pillar has the effect of decreasing the stress concentration in the roof; control of roof caving is thereby predicted. Initial field work indicated that a high horizontal stress field existed at the field test site: Subsequent field work was undertaken to confirm the high horizontal stress field and to attempt to relieve the horizontal stress in the immediate roof. A method of softening pillars in conjunction with normal mining activity was developed. Instruments to measure horizontal roof strain, roof parting, roof tilt at the rib, and changes in vertical and horizontal stress in the roof and in the coal were used. These instruments were installed in both softened and unsoftened entries and in locations to indicate the effect of vertical slots in the roof. Significant stress reduction due to pillar softening was indicated, but the effect of this reduction on roof stability was not established. The vertical roof slots relieved the horizontal stress in the immediate roof very effectively, and observations of roof conditions indicated that the slots definitely improved roof stability.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.
