Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide and consequently metal sulphides will precipitate. The final design for the commercial scale plant is described.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. During mechanical grinding high intensity vibration is emitted that contains information on the mill's operating state. Tests, using a laboratory ball mill, studied the influence of operating parameters on the vibration signature. The parameters studied were: mill speed; powder filling; pulp density; grinding period; and pulp temperature. Vibration signals were detected by an accelerometer, amplified by a vibrometer and recorded onto digital audio tape. A digital oscilloscope converted the signals into IBM-compatible data format. Digital signal processing and multivariate data analysis were carried out with specially developed software. The power spectral density was estimated from the time-domain vibration signal. Four new latent variables were used to describe changes in the vibration spectra. A relationship was established between operating parameters and latent variables which could form the basis of a quick and automatic method of monitoring operating parameters in ball mill grinding.

A simple model for hydrocyclone classification based on the crowding theory first put forward by Fahlstrom is presented. This is a mechanistic theory that postulates that the behaviour of a hydrocyclone is the result of an ordered process that is independent of its dimensions. The main variables that describe the process are the fractions of feed solids and water that are ejected from the underflow. A simple model is developed from basic properties of the classification process and is compared with theory. Agreement is good but improves when the cyclone has a high solids content

Before regulations governing the work on the mines, it was not uncommon in the Rand for a miner to die within a period of 2-3 years as the result of exposure to dust. This paper considers mine and tunnel conditions promoting silicosis and measures to avoid dust exposure in the Rand, South Africa.The relationship between blasting and lung lesions is explored. Evidence is presented that improved working conditions and lowered dust levels reduce the incidence of silicosis.

There has been considerable effort in the UK, and more widely in the European Community, to formulate the best ventilation practices and other means of minimising these incidents. "The Koillismaa layered igneous complex is the result of igneous activity that occurred 2436±5 m.y. ago. Its crystallization took place in three separate but connected magma chambers, the total volume of which is estimated at more than 2000 km'. These chambers were located partly in a feeder system within Archaean granitoids and partly in an unconformity between these grani­ toids and Early Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. The composition of the parental magma that initially filled the chambers is thought to have been that of a relatively MgO-rich tholeiite. Sulphides and platinum-group minerals are mainly concentrated in the marginal series of the western part, where they are encountered over a distance of 25 km. This marginal series is an originally nearly horizontal series of rock types that displays a reversed differentiation trend, grading inwards from gabbroic to ultramafic rocks, followed bv rocks of the layered series. The chilled margin is not encountered anywhere in its original position at the contact, probably as a consequence of magmatic erosion, but remnants are to be found in the form of elongated xenoliths. Partly melted siliceous fragments from gneissic country rock typical of the lower part of the marginal series indicate pronounced contamination.Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite±pyrite are the predominant sulphides. The accessory sulphide minerals include covellite, violarite, marcasite, mackinawite, sphalerite and argentian pentlandite. Platinum-group minerals are represented by froodite, michenerite, merenskyite and sperrylite. Other accessories that have been identified are electrum and native copper and gold. The mean of the Cu/(Cu+Ni) ratio in the mineralizations is 0.67 and Pt/(Pt+Pd) 0.31.It is suggested that the sulphide phase was formed in the marginal series as the solubility of sulphur in the basic magma was lowered by contamination, possibly assisted by some other factors. The sulphur isotope data support the juvenile origin of the sulphur."

A simple but comprehensive method has been developed for the simulation of a mechanical-drive dump truck that enables various parameters to be predicted as a function of time throughout its whole cycle. Uses of the simulation results are indicated with specific attention to environmental and operational or economic planning. The output of a sample run is presented. The method can be easily adapted for the investigation of a wide variety of mobile plants.

The compositions of olivine, pyroxene and chromite from the Proterozoic ultramafic complex are analagous to those of cumulate ultramafic rocks of tholeiitic origin, suggesting that the parent magma may have been tholeiitic rather than komatiitic. The complex contains economically significant Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation. The high sulphide/silicate ratio is best explained in terms of the segregation of sulphides from a large volume of magma, of which all but the ultramafic cumulate fraction has since been eroded. Platinum-group minerals that have been identified include sperrylite, moncheite, native platinum, froodite, merenskyite, michenerite and Pd-rich pentlandite lamellae exsolved from pyrrhotite. They are characteristically found in close association with chalcopyrite, either along the contacts between hydrosilicate and sulphide grains or in cracks within pentlandite and chalcopyrite, which may also be intergrown with galena. Crystallisation from a Cu-rich residual magmatic liquid also enriched in Pt, Pd, As, Sb, Bi, Te, Zn and Pb is postulated.
