Metso has a long history supplying boilers for high ash coal firing. These boilers are based on circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. CFB?s biggest benefit is fuel flexibility ? it can burn fuels from high moisture content to high ash content. Metso has delivered tens of CFB boilers burning waste or high ash coal starting on 80?s. Some of the boilers have been in operation twenty years meaning that there is a long term experience from these plants available. This feedback includes boiler performance and maintenance issues of the boiler. Metso is also delivering coal washing plants to improve coal quality, i.e. reducing ash content of the coal. The idea to combine coal washing plant and CFB boiler was made up two years ago in Metso. Up-coming legislation of coal washing and restrictions for washery reject land-filling in India are good drivers for this kind of concept. Pre-study of this kind of concept led to the conclusion that coal washing process can be fine-tuned so that reject?s calorific value is only 1100 kcal/kg and that was set as a target for boiler design. Metso shipped 200 tons of washery reject to its own research center located in Tampere Finland. First a wide range of fuel characterization tests were done in lab-scale and after that one week test run in 4 MW CFB pilot boiler was done. Test run proved that 1100 kcal/kg can be fired without any support fuel with special boiler design. Test run results gave a good set of data regarding combustion efficiency, emission performance and boiler dynamic behaviour when burning this kind of fuel. These results are introduced in this paper. This paper introduces also the CFB boiler concept for washery reject firing including boiler plant, fuel and ash handling systems and flue gas cleaning system. Zeolite in some regions or countries of the world have been the subjects of materials for environmental remediation involving the use of removal to heavy metal ions and some organic pollutant as a sorbent because of its capacious ions exchange and huge surface area. This article addresses the equilibrium and kinetics for manganese adsorption using zeolite modified by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) as a sorbent material over a range of pH between 3.4~7.2 with eight different Mn(?) solution concentrations. PHzpc (pH of zero point charge) of the sorbent was examined according to the method proposed by Tripathy and Kanungo, and a value of 6.91 was obtained. The experimental data fit langmuir?s model for the majority of pH and Mn(?) solution concentrations tested (0.92<R2<0.97). The maximal adsorption capacity, qm ascending with pH between 3.4~7.2, rise from 15.01mg?g-1 at 3.4 to 19.46 mg?g-1 at 7.2. Besides, the constant of Freundlich Kf have the same trend with qm, increases with pH ascending. And the sorption intensity, represented by parameter 1/n in Freundlich?s model, is favorable in entire range of metal ions concentration studied. Finally, kinetics data accurately fit to pseudo-second order which indicate that there must be sorption of Mn(?) behavior occurring on inner-sphere of the sorbent.

"The analysis on influencing factors of hydraulic conditions in fine hematite flocculation, such as stirring speed, stirring time and axial distance of particle size and fractal dimension of floc was investigated. Furthermore, response surface methodology(RSM) has been applied according to the Box-Benhnken center-united experimental design principle to optimize parameters of hydraulic conditions as a response index to indicate the fractal dimension of floc. The results show that when the agitation speed is 900r/min, the axial distance is 2.0cm, and the stirring time is 3.0min, the particle size reaches the maximum value of 35.44µm and the fractal dimension is 1.6594. The interaction between the axial distance and the stirring speed is highly significant, but the interaction with the stirring time is not obvious. The experimental data and model predications match well, which indicates that the established model has high accuracy and practicability. INTRODUCTION With the exhaustion of iron ore resources that are easy to be mined and the vigorous demand for iron and steel, the exploitation and utilization of fine-grained embedded iron ore resources have drawn attention from the industry and the government [1~2]. Flocculation flotation is one of the effective methods for separation and recovery of fine granular minerals. In 1975, the method was first applied and succeeded in Tilden Concentrator, USA. Flocculation and desliming became the key technology of the Tilden to raise its annual treatment capacity from 4 million tons to 8 million tons at that time [3 ~ 4]. In 2008, the selective flocculation and desliming-reverse flotation technology was successfully used to treat 2.8 million tons of Qidong iron ore. Under the conditions of 28.36% raw iron grade and 98% grinding fineness -0.038 mm, the ideal index of 62.5% iron concentrate grade and 68% recovery was obtained [5]. Dr Kitchenner of the Royal College of Mining and the Ore Processing Research Group of Wallenstein Laboratory first proposed the use of flocculation to separate minerals. After that, many scholars conducted a great deal of theoretical and practical researches, but mostly they focused on chemical theories, mathematical models and selectivity differences in the flocculation process, while the research on the influence of the pulp flow state on the separation effect in the flocculation process started later [6~9]. The results show that the motion of the agitated flow field has a significant influence on the formation of flocs. The fluid morphology will change with the change of hydraulic conditions. The change of fluid morphology will not only affect the movement behavior of particles, but also change the action of chemical agents on the surface of mineral particles[10~12]."

A novel rotary triboelectrostatic separator has been developed and patented recently at the University of Kentucky with unique features, including a high efficiency rotary charger, charger electrification, laminar air flow, etc. A parametric study has been performed with a coal combustion fly ash sample to investigate the effects of major operating parameters on the process performance. Most significant operating variables and optimum conditions were identified. Separation tests performed with four fly ash samples indicated that the rotary triboelectrostatic separator showed effective fly ash separation.

Refractory iron ore deposits in China have various genesis and complicated types, the nature of which is poor, fine-disseminated and complex. Therefore, refractory iron ore could scarcely be separated and utilized by traditional mineral processing technology at present. It is necessary to explore deep reduction technology to change the characteristics of refractory iron ore and to use effectively the iron resource. And deep reduction technology is that on the condition of higher reduction temperature than that of magnetic roasting and stronger reducing atmosphere, the iron oxides from iron ore was reduced to metallic iron particle that is easy to dissociate. And then production from deep reduction is easily separated by magnetic separation and iron powder production was obtained finally. Deep reduction technology for Lingyang iron ore from Jilin, China, as the refractory iron ore, was studied in this paper. The influences of such main factors as reduction temperature, time and coal content were investigated. The results showed that the Metallization rate of reduction product was up to more than 90% under optimum conditions, and then higher iron grade and recovery of reduction iron powder were obtained from subsequent magnetic separation. Furthermore, the deep reduction mechanism in the system was studied by the means of XRD and SEM analysis for reduction production and Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy. Analytical results indicated that during deep reduction, the size of iron particle from deep reduction materials was increasing as reduction temperature rising and reduction time extending. The growth of metallic iron particle from deep reduction production was divided into such three stages as reduction nucleation, deep reduction and growth of metallic iron particle.

"Bacteria that grow in autochtonous communities of gold heap leaching (HL) wastes are adapted to high concentrations of contaminants and environmental conditions. An example of a mine in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic showed that the bacterial factor had a significant influence on cyanide breakdown and copper and nickel removal in the conditions of HL ore pile zoning compared to chemical oxidation. The diversity of bacterial communities growing in natural and simulated conditions of a HL ore pile was determined for the purpose of the study. The identified bacterial communities included genus Achromobacter and Serratia, which were found to be adapted to a wide range of temperature and can be considered as potential microorganisms for detoxification of gold HL wastes. INTRODUCTION Technologies and systems of passive treatment are of a special interest in relation to solving environmental problems of gold HL wastes detoxification, when neutralization time is not considered as a limitation (Alvarez et al. 2005). Passive treatment methods are based on reagentless spontaneous breakdown of cyanide caused by natural factors, including activity of autochthonous bacterial communities. Implementation of a reagentless biodetoxification technology for mature HL operations provides reduction of environmental impact on industrial site locations and substantial economic benefits compared to conventional chemical processes of neutralization that prevail in the Russian Federation territory. Passive treatment of cyanide-containing wastes was investigated by M. Botz, T. Mudder, S.V. Petrov, L. Simovic, A. Smith, C.A. Young etc. However, the bacterial factor (autochtonous bacterial communities) role in this process is practically unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study included the investigation of a bacterial factor influence on passive treatment of gold HL wastes and the identification of functional groups of bacteria involved in passive treatment."

"Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001)."

"The recovery of oxide Cu minerals by flotation is a longstanding challenge in the minerals industry, especially for high acid-consuming ores which would not be economical for direct acid leaching. Sulfidization (often using controlled potential sulfidization or CPS) using NaSH (or Na2S) followed by flotation using traditional sulfide collectors is the widely used technique. CPS has certain limitations: a) inability to recover certain oxide Cu minerals because they are refractory to sulfidization, b) high consumption of NaSH (or Na2S), and c) potential health and safety hazards associated with NaSH (and Na2S). Flotation of oxide copper minerals using alkyl hydroxamate (AHX) collector has been studied extensively. Investigations using single minerals and laboratory ore flotation have been conducted in the past to demonstrate the efficacy of alkyl hydroxamates. The technology has been used intermittently in plants. One of the main challenges in plant use has been quantifying the true potential for alkyl hydroxamates for recovery of various oxide Cu species in complex and variable ore systems and identifying the most suitable conditions for optimal use. Quantitative mineralogical analysis using QEMSCAN was used in this study to characterize flotation products lab flotation samples. Analysis of concentrates and tails from hydroxamate flotation and CPS flotation stages demonstrated that certain oxide Cu minerals respond exclusively to alkyl hydroxamates and not to CPS. The hierarchy of interaction of AHX with the various oxide Cu minerals could be inferred from these studies. Finally, these studies also allowed quantification of a group of minerals species, which (erroneously) report as part of the Acid-Soluble Cu [ASCu] but cannot be recovered by flotation, thereby facilitating an estimation of the true recovery potential for alkyl hydroxamate.INTRODUCTIONCopper that is economically recoverable occurs in three major types of ores, which are defined by the modal mineralogy of Cu. For sulfide ores, Cu occurs as sulfide minerals and is satisfactorily recovered by flotation using sulfide collectors. Non-sulfide ores, which contain Cu in the form of oxides, phosphates, carbonates and silicates, described in the industry as “oxide” ores (or ores containing “acid-soluble” Cu or ASCu), are currently treated using hydrometallurgy, which involves leaching with dilute sulfuric acid followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, unless the ores contain acid consuming gangue minerals such as dolomite. For mixed sulfide-oxide ores (i.e. containing both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals) that do not contain acid consuming gangue minerals, Cu values are easily recovered by flotation of sulfide Cu minerals followed by leaching of oxides (only when a leach plant is available). However, when the ore contains acid consuming gangue minerals flotation is required to recover both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals."

"The processing of copper gold ores is one of the major issues of gold-mining industry in the beginning of 21st century. In this case, application of ammoniacal cyanidation process for this type of mineral raw materials deserves special attention. Irgiredmet Institute has carried out a wide range of studies on ammoniacal cyanidation process and evaluated the possible commercial use of this process for Russian operating plants. Copper gold-bearing ore from a current Russian deposit was studied. The content of gold and copper in the ore is 9.4 g/t and 0.4%, respectively. Based on the results of preliminary test work, a flow sheet was developed. It included gravity concentration followed by cyanidation of the gravity tailings using CIP. The flow sheet provides sufficient total gold recovery (91.5%). However, this technology has disadvantages, such as high specific consumption of reagents: 4.5 kg/t NaCN and 13.5 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 the ore and the increased gold grade in the liquid phase of the tails slurry (0.2 g/t). In order to improve cyanidation process parameters, test work on gravity tails processing using ammoniacal cyanidation was carried out. After the test work was completed, ammoniacal cyanidation flow sheet for copper gold-bearing ores was developed. Leaching conditions were optimized using recycled process solutions. Recommendations on gold recovery from the solutions and tails detoxification are given. The proposed flow sheet provides 91.5% gold recovery. In this case, compared to the conventional option, the consumption of cyanide decreases by 3-4 times.INTRODUCTION The technology of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores is based on cyanidation. This accounts for up to 90% gold recovery and the significant portion of silver (Lodeischikov, 1999). However, there exists the category of so called refractory ores. They are not amenable to direct cyanidation (without using additional expensive processes), or they are characterized by low indices of metals recovery and high consumption of reagents. The latter also include copper gold ores. Their deposits can be found extensively both worldwide and in Russian Federation. A feature of these ores is that they contain not only gold but also copper. It is considered not only as a valuable component but also as a harmful mineral impurity that hinders gold cyanidation, gold precipitation from the solutions by cementation onto zinc dust and adsorption onto activated carbon (CIL, CIP-processes), detoxification of cyanide bearing effluents."

The Lake Balaton is the biggest and for many reasons the most important lake in Hungary. To preserve its healthy nature it is necessary to remove the accumulated mud time to time, similarly to the many living waters, lakes and rivers everywhere. Typical existing technologies (mechanical, hydraulic) require large depositional areas, where the removed slurry and mud is dewatered through very long time. One problem is the non existence of an economical mud thickening technology. Another major problem is that current methods remove the sand fraction with the mud as well. Many times sand has to be complemented from outer sources to endanger the natural balance of the living water. By the financial support of the NKFP 3A/068/2004 Hungarian Research Project our consortium has been looking for the solution to the above mentioned problems. The original ideas of the project were: 1. Sand should be separated and returned to the water by hydrocyclon; 2. New mud thickener should be developed based on the principle that vibrating rods can force settling and packing of mud particles. The work was started by fundamental research with different samples from Lake Balaton and River Bodrog. An automated settling column (45L) has been built for the investigation of the effect of vibrating rods on the settling behavior of suspensions. An optical sensor has been developed by with the settling curve (height of settling slurry as function of time) can be automatically measured. Different vibrating methods and parameters have been tested by the application of a linear motor and mechanical eccentric drive. On the basis of the fundamental research a new thickener, called the rod ? lamella thickener has been developed and an industrial size (50m3/h) mud removing technology has been built. Main parts of the technology are the traditional dredging barge and the thickening technology. The thickening and sand separation technology is tugged by the dredging ship. Its main elements are the homogenization tank, slurry pump, hydrocyclon and the rod ? lamella thickener. In this unit lamellas carry out pre-thickening, then vibrating rods further increase the concentration. The thickened mud is transported out by a screw - of which revolution number is precisely controlled - against a spring supported valve. Paper reports about the design, building, water probe and on-site tests of this mud removing technology. Two new patents had been presented, one is about the rod ? lamella thickener and the other is about the mud removing technology with sand separation.

With rapid development of Chinese iron & steel industry, it is of significance to intensify the utilization of domestic complex iron ore resources. The tin, zinc-bearing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones because of the complicated intergrowth relations among the multi-elements, and they have not been efficiently utilized, presently. Based on the thermodynamic analysis of iron, tin and zinc oxides reduction by CO, the technological conditions of tin and zinc recovery and pellets preparation from tin, zinc-containing iron concentrates by selective reduction roasting are studied and a new comprehensive utilization process is developed in this investigation. Under the optimum conditions, the tin and zinc volatilization is respectively in excess of 80% and 70%, and the compression strength of roasted pellet is more than 2500 N/P. Moreover, the residual tin and zinc in the finished pellets is below 0.06%. The finished pellets can be used as high quality iron-making burdens for large-scale blast furnace.

HermesTM metal magnetic liner (MML) has been invented and manufactured by China Metallurgy and Mining General Co. (CMMC). This paper describes its mechanism, structure, magnetic field distribution, application, economic benefit and safety performance. The 10 years? service life in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Mine, along with 6 years? technological analysis on its application in 5500mm×8800mm (diameter × length) ball mill in Anshan Steel?s Diaojuntai mineral processing plant, has proved its advantages such as super reliability, long service life, light weight, thin thickness, low noise and short payback period. It has also demonstrated its positive effects on the grinding process such as high productivity, energy-effective performance and low consumption of grinding media. It reduces labour intensity and improves working conditions, due to its easy installation, free maintenance and the fact that it doesn?t require fastening bolts or cause slurry leakage. It is de-signed scientifically in accordance with the varieties of processing lines, mill specification, ore type and grinding media, and has been applied in different grinding processes for magnetite, hematite, gold ores, nonferrous ores and other materials. HermesTM MML has three types of products: General, Composite and Heavy-duty. They are designed to meet the requirements from customers in China and abroad. So far, more than 400 sets of MML have been applied in ball mills with diameter rang-ing from 1500mm to 5500mm. It has become highly popular in American market recently due to its safe and effective performance.

"With continuous mining industry development and dressing plant scale expansion, flotation cell is developed towards to large scale and intelligence. Based on flotation cell scale-up theory and industrial practice, KYF-320 air-forced mechanical flotation cell with effective volume of 320m3 was successfully developed by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM) and adopted by China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., Ltd, Luming project of China Railway Resource Group Co., Ltd, and Toromocho project of Chinalco in Peru. In this paper, the structure and technical characteristics of KYF-320 flotation cell are introduced, and the application of that equipment in China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., LTD is demonstrated. The tank of KYF-320 flotation cell is cylinder-shaped, 8200mm in diameter and 7500mm high, with double froth lauders and large inclined angle cone bottom. 16 sets of KYF-320 flotation cells of which the processing capacity is 26,000,000 tons/a, are used in the second phase project of China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., LTD. Their stable running shows the long life of impeller and stator and the power intensity (power consumption divided by effective volume of flotation cell) of KYF-320 flotation cell is only 0.73kW/m3 which is significantly less than that of small scale flotation cells. The industrial production obtains good results that the Cu grade of final concentrate of entire flotation circuit is 22.90% at the recovery of 86.73%, when Cu grade of feed is 0.35%, which indicates that KYF-320 flotation cell has good performance and can be widely used in large scale mine."

This investigation is concerned with the optimization of ultrafine grinding of solids. It is focused on a dynamic classifier for recovering the fine fraction, for automatic recycling of the oversize particles and for reducing power consumption. Power consumption plays a major role in these energy intensive processes and depends on several parameters such as nature of the solid, degree of fineness of the finished product and, above all, grain size of the feed. This study indicates the optimal conditions for a dynamic classifier, that is, geometric characteristics of the apparatus and its capacity, inlet air flow rate and dimensions of the classification circuit. It is also shown that a mean grain diameter (dm) of about 2.00 µm with top size (dmax) of 50 µm can be achieved with an imperfection value of below 0.40 and energy consumption of 215 kWht-1. "The research applies the density functional theory and molecule design technology to design and synthesize the novel flotation collectors for copper-sulphur separation. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to investigate the electronic properties of O-isopropyl-N-benzyl thionocarbamate (IP-BIAN) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200). The calculation results show that both the energy of highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) of IP-BIAN are smaller than that of Z-200, electronegativity of IP-BIAN is higher than that of Z-200. According to the Klopman’s generalized perturbation theory, the collecting power of the two compounds is predicted to be Z-200 > IP-BIAN, the selectivity of IP-BIAN is better than that of Z-200. Then the thionocarbamate molecular is synthesized, and the compounds are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It turns out that the test result identifies the prediction after the flotation verified test of pure mineral and actual mineral. The results demonstrate that the EHOMO and ELUMO are smaller in the thionocarbamate after a nitrogen atom is bound to benzyl, the thionocarbamate has strong selectivity and low collecting power. The lower the LUMO energy of thionocarbamate is, the stronger the back donation covalent p-bond between collectors and chalcopyrite is, thus improving flotation power for chalcopyrite and selectivity against pyrite. The result proves the feasibility of design and synthesis of the novel thionocarbamate through the frontier orbital properties of the collectors.1. INTRODUCTION Thiocarbamate is a kind of nonionic polar collector and is now widely used as flotation collector for copper-sulphur separation. The flotation power of thiocarbamate to chalcopyrite is stronger than pyrite, so it has high selectivity against pyrite. The frontier orbital theory and density functional theory (DFT) has been widely applied to study the structure-activity relationship of flotation collectors [1-6]. The flotation test results can be interpreted by using the reaction energy criteria and quantum-chemical parameters, such as the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) of collector [7-11]. In turn, there are rarely reports about screening the novel flotation collector, by the frontier orbital properties such as HOMO and LUMO of flotation collectors. In this thesis, we apply the density functional theory and molecule design technology to design and synthesize the novel flotation collectors for copper-sulphur separation. Based on the previous findings of the structure-activity relationship of xanthogen formats [12], it has stronger collecting ability to chalcopyrite while the xanthogen formats after a nitrogen atom is bound to benzyl. Thus, in this study, a novel thionocarbamate molecule O-isopropyl-N-benzyl thionocarbamate (IP-BIAN) will be constructed, when the group structure connected with N atom in the known collector O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200) is replaced with ethyl by propyl. The collectors (IP-BIAN and Z-200) have been calculated by DFT methods in quantum chemistry. By analyzing the reaction energy criteria and the frontier orbital properties (HOMO and LUMO), this research predicts flotation performance of novel collectors (IP-BIAN), then the synthetic experiments and flotation verified tests are conducted. The research provides a new theory reference for screening out the high-effective flotation collectors of copper-sulphur separation. This technology adoption will contribute to the sustainable development of mineral resources as it shortens the research cycle of new collector molecules and reduces the investment."

A continuum based granular flow model of charge motion that combines the inherent frictional nature of particles with its distinctly fluid-like structure is presented. Starting with Newton?s 2nd Law on a volume element of charge, we derive the velocity field in the bed free-surface and the rising en-masse region. Invoking flux conservation within the two regimes of interest then yields a (simple) differential equation for the free-surface of the charge body. Combining the velocity field gradients with a suitable constitutive choice for the shear stress completes the picture with a description of the in-situ rate of shear power dissipation in a tumbling mill ? a mechanistically correct account of power draw in a tumbling mill. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) was used to measure the in-situ flow fields of the charge within opaque systems like tumbling mills. The accurate velocity and mass distribution derived from PEPT form the basis for direct verification of the resulting granular flow models. In this regard a wide range of milling conditions is investigated and presented in this paper.

Mathematical modeling of bioremediation has gained importance as it is used as an optimization tool for the remediation process involved in contaminated sites. The bioremediation of Cr(VI) has been studied taking into consideration the initial Cr(VI) concentration Cr(VI)ini, bacterial growth substrate concentration (S), maximum growth rate (µmax), yield coefficient (Y), half saturation constant (Ks), and inhibition constant (KI). As the enzymatic reaction is also affected by initial substrate concentration (Sini) and Ks, different ratios of (Ks/Sini) are analyzed. As the inhibition constant (KI) is not constant for all the enzyme reactions and it varies with Cr(VI)ini, the correlation between (KI) and Cr(VI)ini is developed. A set of differential equations pertaining to bioremediation of Cr(VI) has been solved using FORTRAN 90 program adopting the model developed. The results are verified with the experimental data from the literature and a good correlation has been obtained between the experimental data and the model predictions. "Mining operations are often located in remote arid environments with limited access to fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in such cases makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing plants. Such plants treating Cu- Mo sulfide ores in seawater have been fully operational in Chile (e.g. Las Luces, Centinela). In many cases process waters used in commercial flotation plants (e.g. Mt Keith in Western Australia) are even more concentrated electrolyte solutions than seawater. This paper is an attempt at classification of the flotation operations carried out in process waters that are concentrated electrolyte solutions.INTRODUCTIONAccording to Gleick (1966), of the total Earth’ water resources 97.5% is in the oceans and ice caps, and thus only about 2.5% is fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing operations. The existing commercial operations using seawater as well as recent research projects that deal not only with sulfide ores but also with apatite ores provide a lot of information that can now be generalized. The progress that has been made in this area is reviewed and based on this information an attempt is being made at classifying the flotation operations carried out in highly concentrated electrolyte process waters.SALT FLOTATIONFlotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions was studied by Klassen (Klassen, 1963). He reported that hydrophobic, bituminous coals, could float in salt solutions without addition of any other flotation agents. The process is referred to as salt flotation. Other inherently hyhrophobic minerals (e.g. talc, graphite, sulfur, etc.) were shown to behave similarly (Klassen and Mokrousov, 1963)As Figure 1 shows, some coals float quite well in solutions of Na2SO4, NaCl and NaNO3 (Klassen, 1963). While there are differences between the tested salts (explained by different foamabilities of these solutions) all the tests indicate that only bituminous coals float well in concentrated electrolyte solutions. 0.3 M solutions are quite sufficient to initiate a good and very fast flotation. If wettability of various coals is compared it becomes obvious that these well floating coals are very hydrophobic bituminous coals (Figure 2)."

The adsorption and stabilization of mineral dispersed systems by using Pluronic copolymers with different molecular weights and EO content has been studied. The role of sequential adsorption of EO-PO copolymers and cationic surfactant (CTAB) on the carbonate particle properties and in determining the stability of their suspension was studied with particular attention to the conformation of the polymer at the solid-liquid interface. The purpose of this work was to investigate the flocculation phenomena, influence of polymer molecular size on stability of suspensions of magnesite and dolomite and the effect of addition mode of polymer and surfactant. The suspension stability measurements and the determination of sedimentation speed were carried out using an optical analyser (Turbiscan). In most of investigated cases, the biggest floccs and the fastest sedimentation were found for low concentrations of copolymers.

Sossego was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in Para state, south east of Amazon region in Brazil. The comminution circuit was designed to treat 41 000 metric tons per day comprising primary crushing, one 11.6 m SAG mill operating in closed configuration with cone crushers, followed by two 6.7 ball mills. In the first three years of continuous operation Vale investigated alternatives for obtained improved performance of the circuit by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on SAG mill. A number of actions were then implemented, which resulted in significant increase in overall production. Vale then decided to further assess the performance of the comminution circuit as a function of ore characteristics. A comprehensive ore characterization program was then conducted, together with the calibration of mathematical models on the basis of surveys carried out at the industrial circuit. The simulator was then used to predict the production level associated to each ore type, as well as to establish the optimized circuit configuration and tailored operating conditions. The ongoing validation program is planned to consolidate the selected strategy, as well as showing the benefits in adopting such indices in mine planning, as opposed to rather simplistic approaches. This paper describes in detail the main aspects of optimizing the industrial circuit performance, as well as the successful method for predicting the production as a function of ore characteristics.
