NAUTILUS MINERALS is a leader in the commercial exploration for and evaluation of seafloor massive sulfide (?SMS?) deposits. Nautilus has exploration licences covering 15,000 sq km of seafloor in Papua New Guinea and is evaluating other areas in the Western Pacific. The Nautilus Western Pacific Gold-Copper project is an interesting case study of the interaction of the disciplines of Science, Engineering and Environmental Science to solve and attend to the challenges of a project without precedence. The Science books of geology and marine biology with respect to seafloor massive sulfides are still being written or at best are thin volumes with recognition still we know very little at this time. Science?s early discoveries and study of these mineral processes on the seafloor provided invaluable data from which to develop an exploration strategy and the genesis of Nautilus itself. The Engineering required for development of such deposits is a combination of yet to be tested ?theory and engineering principles? and adaptation of best practice from other fields such as oil/gas and telecommunication cable laying. The Environmental guidelines for exploring these deposits, let alone mining them, is at the moment still being debated by a panel of experts chosen by the International Seabed Authority.

The Kurile Arc consists of at least 100 submarine volcanoes and 5 submarine calderas located mainly in the rear arc (Figure 1). The arc is seismically very active, particularly in the south, and is characterized by extensive volcanism and hydrothermal activity. At least one subaerial volcano on the arc (Medvezhy located on Iturup island) has an extremely shallow magma chamber and is intensely active.

?ORE? is defined as ?mineral/s that can be mined at a profit?. So, what is ORE at 2,000 m water depth? Is it 5% Copper or 1.8% Nickel/Cobalt? One of the key factors that determine what is ORE, profitable or not, is the cost of mining and extraction. Therefore a determination of ORE requires a commercial and technical appreciation of both sea bed mining equipment and mining options. Perry Slingsby Systems (PSS) have built more remotely operated submarine work vehicles, including 900HP trenching machines, than any other company. With Nautilus Minerals, PSS have been studying a range of deep ocean mining solutions. This paper discusses the commercial and technical issues of various extraction techniques applicable to deep ocean mining from 1,500 m to 5,000 m water depth. Issues such as the rate of extraction, (i.e. tons per hour) is a key economic component and is often constrained by the design and horsepower of the miner. Likewise the design itself of the mining machine and cutting heads can determine the size of material produced which impacts on methods of lifting the ore to surface. Issues such as overburden, sea floor conditions, style of mineralization and physical properties of the ore, obviously affect the selection of appropriate mining machine configuration.

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Near-seafloor high-resolution mapping and photographic transects, associated with finer-spaced box-core sampling could constitute a next step to better constrain the mineable areas and to get a higher level of confidence in the resource estimation.

Deep Reach Technology, Inc. recently completed a multi-year cooperative research project for the U S Army Research Laboratory for the purposes of investigating recovery of rare earth elements from the seabed. This research led to the discovery of a potentially economical deposit in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Cook Islands. In order to further develop this resource, Ocean Minerals LLC (OML) was formed in 2016 to explore the development of a deep-sea mining project to recover rare earth elements and scandium from the upper 10m of sediment in promising areas of the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. OML and the Cook Islands Investment Corporation signed an Agreement in 2016 giving OML exclusive rights to explore a 12000 sq km area and option rights over an additional 48,000 sq km. This poster presents the current status and activities related to this project.

In 1995 the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) of the University of Hawaii conducted a sidescan sonar survey and sampling expedition of the submarine geology and hydrothermal systems surrounding the active volcano White Island. The island is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the geothermally active Taupo Volcanic Zone off-shore of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the site of numerous shallow-water hydrothermal systems. The survey system, an EdgeTech DF1000 sonar, was a dual frequency 100 kHz & 500 kHz sonar capable of imaging the seafloor at better than 1 m resolution and possibly detecting gas bubbles within the water column. Sidescan imagery clearly shows sand channels, debris slumps, submarine landslides, and volcanic ridges all around the island to roughly 800 meters offshore. However, analyses of the both raw and processed acoustic data indicate that the sonar was not able to image any of the shallow-water hydrothermal gas seeps known to exist around the island. Vents were located using a commercial fish finder and knowledge from local tour guides and divers. Eleven gas samples from three different sites were collected by divers for analysis of chemical and isotopic composition. Rock samples were collected from thirteen underwater outcrops for correlation with existing data on subarial island flows sampled by previous investigators. Thin sections and XRF analysis were done for each rock to determine mineral assemblages along with major and trace elements, which were used to tie submarine samples to specific subarial stratigraphic layers.

Manganese nodules from the Cook Islands (CI) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are compositionally different from other nodule fields. CI nodules have relatively high cobalt concentrations and low nickel, copper, and manganese concentrations (e.g. Hein and Petersen, 2013). This reflects the predominantly hydrogenetic (seawater source) origin for metals in the CI nodules versus dual seawater-pore water sources for most other nodules. The concentrations of many critical and strategic metals have not been previously analyzed for CI nodules, so comparisons with other nodule fields have been limited. To address this, we analyzed a set of nodules distributed throughout the CI EEZ for a complete set of 67 elements, including all of the metals that may be of economic interest, such as the rare earth elements (REEs), yttrium, tellurium, niobium, zirconium, tungsten, titanium, and others (see selected elements in Table 1). In addition, we recalculated the tonnages of nodules and contained metals from nodule abundance areas (in square kilometers) determined by GIS ArcMap calculations based on JICA/MMAJ (2001) nodule distributions. The nodule tonnage calculated and summed from each abundance sector yields a total inferred resource estimate of 9.66 billion tonnes of nodules covering an area of 1.21 million square kilometers; using a cut-off of 6 kilograms of nodules per square meter, yields a median tonnage of 8.59 billion tonnes of nodules covering 687,647 square kilometers (Table 2).

In September-October 2002, shallow seafloor drilling using the 5 m-Rockdrill of the British Geological Survey and the German R/V Sonne has revealed critical information on the sub-surface nature of two distinct hydrothermal systems in the New Ireland fore-arc and the Manus Basin of Papua New Guinea. Drilling at the summit plateau of Conical Seamount (39 holes, 31 % recovery) south of Lihir Island in the central New Ireland fore-arc has confirmed the sub-seafloor extend of previously discovered surface gold mineralization (up to 230 g/t Au) and associated alteration to a depth of at least 4.5 m below the seafloor and further proven analogies to the giant Ladolam epithermal gold deposit on Lihir Island. Drill core samples of clay-silica alteration contain average gold grades up to 14.2 g/t Au over a length of about 30 cm (fire assay Lihir Gold Ltd. laboratory) and appear to be part of a more extensive gold zone located below a carapace of relatively fresh ancaramitic and trachybasalt. These samples contain a complex mineralogy including realgar, orpiment, galena, sphalerite, some chalcopyrite and pyrite, together with amorphous silica, and possibly cinnabar. In addition to high concentrations of gold, shipboard analyses indicate that the gold-rich samples contain high values of Pb, As, and Sb, which is a characteristic feature of a magmatic-hydrothermal style of mineralization and alteration.

Environmental properties of the northeast Equatorial Pacific along 131.5 degrees west, between 5 degrees and 13 degrees north latitude, were investigated in association with changes in water column structures during the summer seasons of 1998 and 1999. Climatic disturbances such as El Nino and La Nina, should have affected this area during the study period. In 1998, a thermocline where temperatures rapidly decrease with depth, was formed at 90~110 m water depth. However, in 1999, a very fluctuating thermocline was observed with latitudes. As a result of changes in the water column structures, biological and chemical environment also showed fluctuation parallel to the changes in other physical parameters. Inorganic nutrient depleting areas, especially for nitrate+nitrite and phosphate, or oligotrophic regions were extended down to approximately 100 m depth, which coincided with the surface mixed layer depth. In the euphotic zone, depth integrated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) values were 34 g-N/m2 (grams of Nitrogen per square meter of sea floor), 7 g-P/m2 in 1998 and 130 g-N/m2, 18 g-P/m2 in 1999, respectively. The results indicated that nitrogen (96 g-N/m2) and phosphorus (11 g-P/m2) are supported by up-welling and down-welling phenomena with convergence and divergence in the study area. Biological parameters in the water columns were largely determined by the physico-chemical environmental parameters. Subsurface chlorophyll maximum layers were coincided with the formation of seasonal thermocline. Copepods were the dominant group of zooplankton community at three sampling stations (N5, N6, N10) terms of abundance, which was the same results of previous surveys for the past 3 years. Among copepod populations, Oncaea sp., Oithona sp. Clausocalanus sp., Acarocalanus sp. and juvenile copepodites were dominant Appendicularians, foraminiferans and radiolarians were also dominant. To investigate diel vertical migration pattern of zooplankton, repeated samplings from the water depth of 0~50m and 50~200m were conducted at KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area before and after sunrise. Zooplankton abundance was slightly higher after sunrise than before sunrise in the surface layer. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were relatively low as the concentration of sediment increased in most experiments possibly due to a decrease of grazing pressure of microzooplantkon such as ciliates, which is the efficient grazer on small-sized phytoplankton. Because copepod predation on microzooplankton may be prevented by the high concentration of sediment, resulting in lower grazing pressure on small-sized phytoplankton. "INTRODUCTIONHydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are ubiquitous in the ocean basins and play an important role in marine mineral-deposit research because of their widespread occurrence and high concentrations of valuable and rare metals. Directed research, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, has provided significant results, with substantial amounts of data produced on Fe-Mn crusts structure, composition, and distribution in the global ocean [3, 4 - 8]. Now, commercial interests gain more and more attention. Mining systems are being developed which involve fragmentation of the crusts and their separation from the substrate. The effectiveness of such activities greatly depends on physico-mechanical characteristics of the crusts and rocks on which they form. This determines the importance of the engineering geological study of the objects.This article comprises the results of the engineering geological studies of the crusts samples (72 samples) and their underlying rock substrates (75 samples), which were carried out during the research cruises 6-06, 6-07, 6-08, 6-13 (2006-2013) on the Magellan Seamounts guyots in the Western part of the Pacific Ocean by the specialists of the State Scientific Centre Yuzhmorgeologia [10 - 13, 19, 20]. Mineral zonation studies were conducted on hydrothermal vents of two hot spot volcanoes. One study site is located within the Axial Caldera of the axial hot spot volcano of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The young high-temperature hydrothermal vent field consisting of two polymetallic sulfide chimneys, five meters high, located at 130°01.5'W, 45°56.5'N, along a fault complex at the base of the southwestern wall of Axial Caldera was sampled during four ALVIN dives in 1983. Temperatures of up to 270°C were measured within the orifice of one of the chimneys, which was then broken off and recovered with the submersible. Both black and white "smoke" was observed to be emanating from the one chimney sampled. The high-temperature chimney extends directly from a field of broken lobate lavas which are located at a water depth of 1,550 meters, about 200 meters east of the caldera wall. The chimney makes one of the shallowest active high-temperature vents studied to date. The vent is surrounded by clumps of vestimentiferan worms and is located within an elongate field of red-colored iron smectite blankets and chimneys. The low-temperature field forms a ribbon 150 meters wide, extending for about 1,300 meters at the base of the wall. Chemical analyses of the hydrothermal deposits ranging from the polymetallic sulfides of the chimney to the outer zones of the low-temperature field show a range of elemental assemblages consistent with temperature zonation around the vent. Seafloor polymetallic sulfides have been found in diverse volcanic and tectonic settings on the ocean floor at water depths ranging from 3700 meters to <1500 meters. More than 100 occurrences of hydrothermal mineralization have been documented (including Fe-oxide deposits, Mn-crusts, metalliferous sediments, and massive sulfides), but high-temperature hydrothermal activity and large accumulations of polymetallic sulfides are known at fewer than 20 different sites. Chemical analyses of samples from these deposits indicate that they contain important concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ag, and Au, comparable to those of massive sulfide deposits on land. However, the lack of sufficient data concerning the distribution, size, and bulk composition of seafloor deposits precludes a meaningful assessment of their resource potential.

The Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a two-man portable AUV that is capable of performing seafloor surveys in water depths to 2000 meters. The standard survey sensor suite includes a dual frequency side scan sonar and high resolution digital camera. Additional survey sensors are currently being incorporated into the Gavia AUV, include Sub Bottom sonar, Swath Bathymetry sonar and Multi Beam sonar. The modular design of the Gavia AUV allows the end user to quickly incorporate new sensors including client developed propriety sensors.

Many attempts have been made to design and build an AUV that is small, meets the sensing objectives and is cost effective. Many inventors have already designed smaller vehicles but the problem observed is an increased vehicle instability resulting in instrument instability where data gathered is not trustworthy. Additional problems include instrument weight to vehicle weight ratios and the lack of space for power storage and electrical components. The UFOceanic seeks to remedy these concerns by employing a completely different design and propulsion system. Still in the design stage ? now with a mock-up unit for testing, the results are encouraging. We have chosen a very low voltage embedded systems design using multiple PIC processors and fuzzy logic programming. We are designing the craft to rotate for stability and to provide friction reduction to minimize the need for instrument stability compensation and propulsion power. Additionally, we are looking and experimenting with a number of power plant drive systems including flywheels, GNP (plasma), fuel cells and more conventional systems. We of course plan for the UFOceanic to run for months at a time supported by a self-charging system.

"Lifting of slurry from the seabed mining machine to the surface production vessel is a critical element of any deepwater seabed mining system. A Vertical Transport System (VTS) comprises pump(s), riser string, connectors and hang-off assembly as its main components, but it is the pipe material, riser configuration and installation method that often attract the most discussions.This presentation will feature important VTS design work 2H has done over the years for different stakeholders, and highlight the work carried out as a partner to the EU funded Blue Mining Joint Industry Project.The key challenges faced by a deepwater VTS are:??High riser payload??Large deck space for storing riser joints??Long time to deploy and retrieve riser??Uncertain metocean conditions??Vortex induced vibrations??Weld and connector fatigueIncreasing the water depth further sees the longer and increasingly ‘springy’ riser experiencing axial resonance caused by wave induced vessel heave motions being close to the riser resonant period. This can lead to snatch loading and fatigue failure in the riser.The presentation will discuss the above design issues, analysis requirements and provide guidance on pump/riser selection. Solutions to mitigate the resonant response issues will also be proposed.."

"TOML’s ISA Contract comprises six areas (A-F) that span from 118° to 152° W and from 7° to 15° N or over 70% of the CCZ.During a 2015 exploration cruise, TOML scientists found that the a logging system developed by ISA (2010) was able to be adapted and enhanced, to describe in some detail the varied morphology of nodules both within the TOML areas and between them.The shapes and sizes of nodules seen were then found to relate to substrate type and setting, and thus likely thickness and long-term stability of the geochemically active layer.
