Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. A thin, bipolar electrode material provides a medium for electron exchange with the electrolyte, alternately serving as anode at the hydrogen-rich side and cathode at the oxygen-rich side. Stainless steels have sufficient corrosion resistance to qualify as bipolar plate materials. However, the protective chromite layer increases the contact resistance, the battery’s internal resistance; and thus, decreases the electrical efficiency of the fuel cell. A heat-treatment is proposed and investigated via simulation by ThermoCalc / Dictra and experimentally, to generate a sufficient quantity of conducting surface carbides that breach the protective layer. Once carbide growth is arrested, a subsequent heat-treatment is also needed at a higher temperature to restore the corrosion resistance by filling-in the Cr-depleted layer (sensitization) around the carbide particles.

The swift decline of coal during the period of unprecedented expansion in the Canadian economy is a phenomenon deserving careful examination, because the underlying forces contributing to this decline may have broader implications in our national economy. At the present level of technology, coal is more difficult to process, transport and utilize than liquid and gaseous fuels. Fundamentally, it is a matter of limitation in technique. Because coal is a vast store-house of energy in Canada, the reduction of these limitations is in the long-term national interest.

The Ilo Smelter Modernization Project will require treating the slag from the Peirce Smith converters in Slag Cleaning Furnaces using pig iron technology. Currently the slags from the converters show variable magnetite contents. The copper contained in this slag is recovered in Reverberatory Furnaces, where the smelting rate was improved due to the high silica content of the converter slag. Preliminary industrial tests where developed to clean the slag from converters using pig iron. The results showed that the magnetite content has a significant influence in this process. This work describes the actions that are being implemented in the converter operation to control the magnetite content in the slag in order to maintain the high copper recovery of the smelter when the new facilities are commissioned. This task will demand a strong control of both the slag chemistry and converter practices in order to get the copper recovery considered as the design criteria (~97.4%).

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. In addition, the clay fraction and a 30 g (-80 mesh) subsample from the same till sample, were analyzed for gold . "Seam gas flow in coal mines takes place through a medium which has both capacity and resistance and can therefore be expressed in terms of the basic diffusion equation, provided that the characteristics of the system can be adequately described. It may be possible to lump the variations from point to point in a seam together as an effective diffusivity. The paper discusses the characteristic flow-time patterns for various types of openings and the particular features of coal and seam which influence the diffusivity.Two field experiments are described in which gas make to a heading and to a borehole were measured in a mine for which considerable data on coal sorption properties were available. Incremental gas flow measured from the borehole experiment predicted the actual flow from the heading measurements remarkably well. The effective permeability adjacent to the face was much higher than expected from the properties of the coal. The incremental flow measurements to a horizontal (in-seam) borehole showed a striking picture of advancing 'relaxation' behind the face which is not discernible by other experimental means."

The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. A review of blast designs and improved blasting practices at the Ekati??Diamond Mine is presented along with the results of three blast-monitoring experiments. Blast monitoring was undertaken to investigate blast damage mechanisms in the mine's well jointed rock mass. Rock mass damage caused by production, pre-shear and wall control blasts was measured. Ekati??uses 270mm holes for production blasting, and 165mm holes loaded with a decoupled charge for pre-shearing. The production blasts are loaded with bulk emulsion / ANFO blends. The mine plan involves using 30m double benches. A 30m high pre-shear is drilled and blasted prior to the production blasting that is done with sequential 15m benches. This paper summarizes the monitoring equipment and data gathered to date.

"Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. "Conventional belt conveyors offer an economical method for transporting materials at inclines approaching 18 degrees. Sandwich belt conveyors may be used to transport materials at high angles, to 90 degrees, while maintaining the most positive features of conventional conveyors, that is, (1) proven conventional conveyor components. (2) high-speed operation, (3) high-single lifts, (4) continuous cleaning of the smooth surf aced belts, and (5) easy, quick repair by hot or cold vulcanizing. The present discussion deals with the evolution and development of sandwich belt conveyors to satisfy the operational requirements of the open-pit mining and materials-handling industries.A look at the limitation s of conventional shallow angle conveyors reveals the conveying angle at which a cover belt is needed. The relationship between conveying angle and hugging pressure by the cover belt is developed mathematically. A study of past and current developments reveals that the Loop Belt and Beltavator are significant advances in the state-of -the- art. The vertical radius of curvature constraints are discussed in detail and the constraint equations are developed. Criteria for future development is established as a basis for evolutionary developments in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors. The use of intermediate drives in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors is investigated.IntroductionIn connection with U.S. Bureau of Mines funded–study relating to continuous haulage from deep open-pit mines, the authors had occasion to study extensively, the use of high-angle conveyors as a means of hauling mine products continuously from the pit while maintaining optimum mine slopes to minimize total excavation. The many possible high-angle conveying methods investigated included skip hoists, bucket ladders, pocket belts, fin belts, cleated belts, sandwich belts, pipe belts, screw conveyors, slurry pipe lines, and others. The sandwich belt high-angle conveyor appeared to be the most operationally-appropriate and economical solution for the mining industry. The present paper presents the theory, historical development, state-of-the-art, and evolutionary developments in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors."

Ore extraction at great depths creates high stresses around mine openings, which can result in violent rock failure in one of various forms of strainburst. This is especially true with strong and brittle rocks, which can store a large amount of strain energy that is suddenly released at failure. The strength and brittleness of rocks have been extensively investigated in the past. The most widely accepted method for the determination of rock burstability is the strain energy storage index obtained from a non-destructive uniaxial load–unload test. However, the results of this method are not always conclusive, showing less repeatability when the target test load is changed. This study concerns itself with the introduction of microscopic analysis as a tool to help validate the strain energy index results when burstability cannot be warranted based on mechanical property tests alone. In this study, two types of rocks, namely, basaltic komatiite (BK) and felsic norite (FNOR) obtained from Canadian underground mines are examined. The selection is based on the premise that felsic norite is known to be burstable from the mine experience, whereas basaltic komatiite is not necessarily burstable. A total of 60 mechanical properties tests were conducted including uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, and load-unload tests. Laboratory tests on FNOR consistently exhibit high burstability; however, the results for the BK tests are not conclusive. To seek explanations for the mechanical rock behavior, 18 thin sections were examined with optical microscopy and image analysis. The findings show the tested BK specimens are dominated by alteration products, and all primary igneous minerals are lost. There is minor quartz, garnet, carbonate minerals, talc, and serpentine, which give the rock its ductile properties. The FNOR specimens are found to be relatively fresh and supported by a strong network of plagioclase with minor pyroxene, biotite, and secondary micas, explaining the higher stiffness. This study demonstrates how optical microscopy can complement mechanical property tests to evaluate burstability of rocks.

Severe service ball valve performance has a direct impact on the mechanical availability of high pressure oxidation and leach plants. The primary function of these valves is to isolate the autoclave for maintenance. Valve failure has historically contributed significantly to the maintenance downtime of these process plants. An understanding of the root causes of valve failures is the first step in increasing the reliability of the severe service ball valves. A rigorous failure analysis practice has been developed by Hatch for investigating refractory failures in furnaces and kilns based on Kepner-Tregoe methodology. The method has also been modified for valve failure analysis. From a root-cause failure tree analysis of each of the valve components, a list of all potential valve failure mechanisms was developed for ranking and evaluation, along with recommendations for further valve development. The purpose of this paper is to present the reader with the modified Kepner-Tregoe method and examples of this analysis.

"THE TOPIC on which I am speaking this afternoon is ""The Future of the Canadian Oil Industry.'' At the time of C + 100, we should take a searching look at ourselves, an honest appraisal of our achievements and a forthright accounting of our shortcomings as well as the uniquely Canadian aspects of this industry. I would like to put before you some of my views on the direction we are taking in the exploration field and in the production field. I would also like to speak briefly on some of our problems and the role of the various segments of our industry in solving these problems.First of all, let us look at the exploration picture. We are in the midst of an exploration boom. There were 133 seismic crews active in Western Canada this winter, the highest since 1957, land prices are appreciating rapidly, Canadian oil reserves increased + 16 per cent during 1966, there is a great demand for technical personnel of every kind and the whole industry, except the drilling segment, seems to be prospering. This surge of activity has its roots in two major occurrences. The first of these was the change in the pro-ration system in Alberta, the major producing province, accompanied by the change in spacing pat-terns. The proration change was designed primarily to encourage in-creased exploration and it has certainly had this effect. It has also had the unforeseen effect of put-ting everyone into what we, in the oil business, call ""elephant hunting."" In other words, the days of the development of barely economic, marginal fields are over. Oil companies today are only interested in high-reserve, high-productivity, high-quality reservoirs."

The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. "The effect of current reversal on two commercially manufactured electrodes (RuO2-TiO2 and IrO2-Ta2O5 coated Ti) in a chloride bearing electrolyte was evaluated. Accelerated lifetimes were found to decrease with increasing current density and increasing reversal frequency. Ru: Ti coated electrodes exhibited longer lifetimes than Ir: Ta coated electrodes even though they had one-third as much precious metal content. Chloride concentration did not affect lifetime in the range examined. Using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the failure mode of the electrodes was determined to be coating dissolution leading ultimately to passivation by the presumed growth of a highly resistive oxide at the coating/substrate interface.INTRODUCTIONCatalytic titanium anodes (CTAs) were developed in the 1960’s to replace graphite anodes in chlor-alkali cells. CTAs exhibited much better dimensional stability than graphite leading to lower operating potentials by promoting smaller electrode gaps and better operational efficiencies as they had to be replaced less often. CTAs are simply Ti substrates coated with precious metal oxides (such as IrO2 and RuO2) mixed with other components (such as TiO2 and TasO5) (Trasatti, 2000).CTAs are used in many other electrochemical industries, including water disinfection, wastewater treatment, cathodic protection and metal plating. RuO2 based coatings are typically used for chlorine evolution. IrO2 based coatings are for the most part utilized for oxygen evolution (Comninellis & Nerini, 1991; Forti, Olive, & De Andrade, 2001; Kotz, Stucki & Carcer, 1991; Trasatti & Lodi, 1981)"

Introduction Mineral wool may be defined as "rock, slag, or glass fibres made by a process of melting and blowing by steam or air, containing a minimum of oil and unfiberized material" (U.S. Bureau of Standards CS 117-44). The earliest production of the material was in Wales, about one hundred years ago. In the United States, the industry daces from 1870 when a plant, using slag as raw material, was established in Greenfield, New Jersey. It was not until 1897, however, that large-scale production was commenced on this continent at a plant in Alexandria, Indiana, which utilized rock from nearby deposits. Today, mineral wool is manufactured in many parts of the United States and Canada, the plants for the most part being in close proximity to deposits of suitable rock or to sources of slag. In the United States there are some seventy-five producers with a total annual capacity of nearly one million tons of wool. In Canada, in 1946, eleven manufacturers produced about fifty million square feet of batt-type mineral wool insulation material. Mineral wool is, perhaps, the most efficient of all heat-insulating materials and, moreover, it is fireproof, extremely durable, and insect- proof. Its high efficiency is due to the very low thermal conductivity of the fibres themselves and to the fact that the produce as marketed contains up to 90 per cent non-conducting air space. Depending on the degree of compression of the fibres in the manufactured product, the specific gravity ranges from 2 lb. to 10 lb. per cubic foot. "A FIRE which forced the sealing -of the east side of Dominion No. 16 Colliery in the Town of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, occurred on October 6th, 1952 (Figure 1).So far as can be ascertained, the fire was first noticed in the roof of No. 7 East Lateral, after a brushing shot had been fired in the pavement. There appears to .be no doubt that this shot •blew out, igniting a small feeder in the roof.Regular air measurements and air samples, taken over a long period prior to the fire, indicated that the ventilation was adequate, for at no time had the percentage of CH4 in the general air current exceeded one per cent in this location. The last regular monthly samples and air measurements, taken at the end of September, showed the condition of the ventilation to be:Return at the Top of No. 8 East WallQuantity .... 27,700 cu. ft. per min.CH4 .......................... 0.32 per centC02 ................................ 0.10 per centHowever, in the week preceding the fire the mine examiner on four occasions had reported small feeders of gas at the face of the brushing in No. 7 East Lateral.Figure 2 is a diagram of the working place where the shots were fired. THE PURPOSE of this paper is to indicate the working capacity of different types of ropes for various engineering and mining duties. ROPE CONSTRUCTIONS There are approximately one hundred different designs of ropes in use today but, normally, only about ten are necessary for mining and engineering duties. The rest are designed for unusual equipments, or are different ways of combining wires of special shapes. Basically, the various designs of mining ropes consist of round, triangular, and oval strands, constructed with one or several layers of wire over a single wire, or a compound construction of sever.al wires. To suit different installations ropes are made with 3, 4, 5, or more of these types of strands over a central core, the ?co re itself being manufactured from either a fibrous material or a combination of steel wires. Nevertheless, in mining, the demand for 'locked coil rope', wl1ich may be considered as a single strand, is steadily increasing, especially for use on vertical shaft winding engines. So far as the locked coil rope is concerned, many constructions have been developed to suit different requirements, such as - in addition to winding ropes - aerial carrying Topes, shaft guide ropes and haulage ropes.

In 1913, potash mineralization was recognized at a depth of over 7,000 feet in an oil-well hole (Norcanol's Radville No. 1 well) drilled near the town of Raddlle, Saskatchewan. Although, at this depth, potash is not considered mineable by conventional underground mining methods, this discovery shed the first light on the potash deposits of Saskatchewan in much the same manner as oil-well drilling was responsible for the first discovery of potash in the Carlsbad Basin of New Mexico in 19:25. The discovery near Radville alerted the oil-well geologists and, as a result potash mineralization was recognized in the Verbata No. 2 well, near Unity, Saskatchewan, in 1946. The mineralization, which was at a depth ?of 3,466 feet, graded more than 20 per cent K20 over a thickness of eleven feet. "11.1. INTRODUCTIONA royalty is the most common form of interest retained by an owner who is disposing of his property or by a joint venturer who ceases, voluntarily or otherwise, to participate in the joint venture.1 Rarely does a non-participating party have a direct interest in the property and/or assets of a project, except during the period when a non-participating joint venturer may be having his interest diluted.2 In fact, it is most unwise to permit a non-participating party to have such an interest. It may give rise to significant problems that could prevent or substantially delay the development of an orebody and require a considerable amount of time, effort, and money to correct.3In negotiating a royalty, it is important to be aware that there is no law or convention that says, “You just don’t do that in a royalty agreement.” As with any agreement, inventiveness and flexibility on the part of the negotiator are not just assets, but virtual necessities. It is also for this reason that it is essential to read the royalty provisions, particularly the definitions, fully and carefully, especially if you are the recipient. On the other hand, if your inventiveness and flexibility cause your accountant to question the advisability of one of your ideas, pay close attention to him.4 He will, no doubt, have had experience with many royalties, and no competent professional adviser disparages a client’s ideas without good reason. Besides, he will probably be the person who will be determining the royalty or certifying the determination of it. At the very least, he will be auditing your general financial statements, which must, of course, reflect the royalty determination. Heeding his advice not only may make the determination easier but also will probably save you money in professional fees later on. Nevertheless, do not simply accept his comments or recommendations without understanding what they mean, why they have been made with respect to your royalty agreement (sometimes professionals have comments that they make as a matter of course and, even though they may be valid, you should require them to be justified to you), and how they will affect your royalty determination.It is surprising how many corporate payors insist that their standard royalty provisions5 be used as a matter of policy, thereby effectively tying the negotiator’s hands. It is even more surprising, and to professional advisers frightening, how many of the senior employees who insist that such a policy be adhered to, virtually without variation, do not know what is in the standard provisions and would be hard-pressed to explain them to a property owner. If standard provisions are appropriate, by all means use them, but do allow experienced and sensible negotiators some flexibility and make sure that everyone within the corporation who may have to use such provisions – negotiator and supervisor alike – knows what they contain and why they are as they are. For example, there are often good and convincing reasons to describe a deduction in a certain way or to include a certain specific type of deduction. On the other hand, quite often the answer to the question “why?” is that “it has always been there”; this is, or should be, an unacceptable answer. In any event, if you, as the negotiator, appear to know what you are talking about, are familiar and comfortable with your royalty provisions, and are backed up by your boss with the same words or reasoning, a property owner cannot help but be satisfied that you are knowledgeable, even if he still does not agree with your provisions. Finally, if you do use standard provisions, make sure that they are reviewed and updated regularly."
