Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

Permian oroclines in eastern Australia must have formed by sliding on a detachment surface. It is identified as a westward- dipping Devonian and Carboniferous sub- duction zone. Major strike-slip faults probably sole out on the same surface. One major fault with an associated serpentinite belt was pulled away from the craton abd bent into loops. Basins formed in the loops.

As South African gold mines go deeper, and improved and more uniform working condi- tions are required, ever larger amounts of refrigeration are needed. At the same time new and more suitable cooling equipment is becoming available for use with new mining layouts as well as on existing shaft systems. The advent of the large diameter rotor screw compressor has meant that there is now a machine available with great flexibility in performance and construction for efficient underground use. The first installation using this type of machine is described.

Before commencing design of a coal prepar ation plant, it is essential to have detailed information of the raw coal to be treated to- gether with a clear understanding of the products required. Prediction of raw coal size distribution, particularly the amount of fine material, is difficult and the methods employed should be large scale pilot plant studies or techniques to simulate coal degradation and shale breakdown in water. A detailed knowledge of well proven coal preparation processes and new developments allows processes and process combinations to be compared to'obtain the maximum economic recovery when using lower cost, less efficient processes within acceptable limits. Equipment should be selected bearing in mind its precise application and the location where it is installed. Plant layout should be carefully studied to minimise equipment requirements and to simplify construction. Measurement, control and automation should be an integral part of plant design in order to obtain the optimum performance of the processing equipment.

A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. Borehole geophysical logging data are routinely acquired during exploration of coal deposits in Australia. These data are commonly used qualitatively to identify and correlate coal seams and geotechnically significant interburden rock units. Some quantitative analysis, such as using sonic logs for rock strength estimation is becoming increasingly widespread. This paper discusses results from a project aimed at expanding the quantitative approach to more detailed mineralogical and lithological analysis, which leads to improved geotechnical characterisation for mine planning and mining hazard reduction. A standard suite of wireline logs measuring density, natural gamma, sonic and neutron were analysed from three coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Thirty-nine samples from cored sections of the boreholes were analysed by X-ray diffraction, spectral gamma counts and hyperspectral scanning. Using a standard petrophysical approach to calculating porosity, shale and matrix components from a combination of density, natural gamma and neutron logs, a good correlation with observed mineralogy was demonstrated. However, unusual mineralogies such as heavy minerals or low-potassium clays may distort this analysis. Simultaneous evaluation of all available geophysical logs by modern data mining methods was able to show how these ambiguities may be solved.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Mt Keith Operation, 90 kilometres north of Leinster in the north-eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, was commissioned in October 1994. Based on a large tonnage, low-grade nickel sulphide orebody the plant was designed to produce 28 000 tonnes of nickel in a high-grade 20 per cent nickel concentrate. Following a successful and rapid start-up the operation is currently expanding to a throughput of ten million tonnes per annum (mtpa) ore and an annual production of 42 000 tonnes of nickel. This paper provides an overview of the Mt Keith Operation from commissioning to its present operation and Expansion.

The Permian-Triassic Bowen Basin and the Jurassic-Cretaceous Surat Basin evolved in a backarc tectonic setting behind an active convergent plate margin in eastern Gondwana. Several extensional (Early Permian; Eocene) and contractional (mid- Permian; Early Triassic; Middle-Late Triassic; early Late Cretaceous) intraplate deformational events are recognised in the basins. These can be correlated with similar events in the New England Orogen that was being deformed in the Late Permian- Late Triassic as a foreland thrust belt. The intraplate deformations were probably the consequence of plate interactions, including the accretion of terranes, at the ancient active plate margin, remnants of which now occur in New Zealand.

Finite element analysis is becoming a routine component of design of longwall extractions, now superseding more traditional somewhat intuitive approaches. Finite element modelling is relatively inexpensive and provides an adequate degree of similitude to give satisfactory analysis. The physical modelling of two decades ago is now largely replaced by numerical methods of which finite element is the best known. Important data for finite element work are physical properties, including creep aspects, introducing the non-linearity of stress response.Various computer packages are available and some were used to model two specific UK examples, using both linear and non-linear approaches. It appears that non-linear approaches will yield most benefit. The use of materially non-linear analysis is merited by the greater similitude it provides between model output and real mine situations.

Coal winning in the Latrobe Valley exceeds 45 mtpa uses a small number of Bucket Wheel Excavators and high speed conveyor systems. While this equipment offers many advantages in the production cycle, incorrect use can lead to low productivity and risks to the safety of the operators and equipment. The mining equipment is of high capital value and easily damaged when used outside the correct operating range. In the extreme case, this can result in total machine collapse, having major implications for personnel safety as well as production and costs. With an active productivity improvement program in the Latrobe Valley in the last two years resulting in a 50 per cent reduction of personnel, many experienced operators have retired. Mine management are facing the urgent need to rapidly train new operators to maintain high productivity levels and reduce the risk of accidents to personnel and high capital cost plant. With the assistance of the Central Gippsland College of TAFE a Certificate Level course has been developed for open cut operators. The course covers all essential training needs for the Latrobe Valley mines. The training is developed from National Competency Standards, allowing transfer of skills, and is flexible to suit other enterprises. It has been written for self-paced learning with the total job understanding, and to have competency-based learning outcomes, training tasks and assessments built-in to modules. With the introduction of this new training program, management is convinced that the element of risk within the mine will be significantly reduced. For these reasons it is an ideal training model for other enterprises.

For utilization of solid carbonaceous materials produced in processes of cracking heavy oil, such as petroleum pitch, as powder fuel, it is necessary to develop a process for fine grinding of these materials. It is known that grinding' additives are effective for fine grinding of cohesive and heat-sensitive materials such as petroleum pitch, therefore in this study, effective methods for fine grinding of petroleum pitch with some grinding additives were investigated. Experiments were carried out by using comminution kinetics based on mass balance. From the results of the investigation by using a batch ball mill, it was found that sodium stearate, calcium stearate and carbon black were effective additives for the improvement of grinding efficiency. Optimum concentration of the grinding additives was also found to give a required particle size of products. Concerning to the action mechanism of these additives, it is considered that the additives which adhired to, or were absorbed on the surface of petroleum pitch particles not only prevented cohesion of the particles but improved dispersion of the particles as well. From the results of the investigation by using a laboratory screen mill which is a representative built-in classifiered impact crusher, carbon black was found to be an effective additive for the improvement of grinding efficiency and mill performance. It is also considered that the improvement of classification efficiency by carbon black affected the mill performance.

An image analysis system has been built which automatically digitizes camera input of rock fragments, analyses the digitised data to determine the sizes and shapes of the rock fragments, and outputs the analysed data to a printer in the form of a histogram or a scatter chart. The high speed of such a system allows for direct collection of data from material thrown into the air by blasting, material travelling on a conveyor belt, and material free-falling on to a stock-pile or into or out of a rock-crusher. Data on the blasted, un-crushed material provides information on changes in the lithology and structure of the rock face as it is quarried or mined: flatter fragments may represent approach to a brittle, unstable shear zone, or a change from sandstone to shale; so that the informa- tion reflects the effect on the sizes and shapes of the fragments by the blasting process and/or by the rock structure. The size and shape distributions of rock fragments produced during blasting and during processing may now be continuously monitored. Such detailed analysis of the results of fragmentation is labour-intensive and expensive when the size and shape distributions are obtained manually, but is cheap and efficient when using this image analysis system. Such a system will enable the results of blasting, quarrying, mining and crushing to be cheaply analysed and correlated with current and changing indus- trial practice so leading the way to increased productivity.

The Bowdens Silver Deposit is a low sulfidation epithermal silver-base metal deposit that has formed on the northern margin of a hydrothermal system within air-fall breccias, ignimbrites and crystal tuffs of rhyolitic composition. The deposit lies near the north-eastern margin of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the rhyolitic host rocks are of Early Permian age. The silver mineralisation occurs as flat-lying zones of disseminations and silicic fracture-filling within the Rylstone Volcanics and is closely associated with sulfides of iron, arsenic, lead and zinc. High-grade silver mineralisation is also found in steeply-dipping fracture zones which host banded sulfide veins. Studies of the alteration products indicate that high temperature fluids, flowing from south of the current project area, resulted in quartz (¦adularia) û illite/sericite alteration. Cool, low pH steam-heated waters on the northern and eastern margins of the prospect area resulted in siderite û smectite-illite clay û Fe-carbonate û marcasite û kaolinite alteration. Mixing of the two fluid types resulted in the deposition of iron and base metal sulfides, a decrease in both sulfur activity and pH of the mineralising fluid, and subsequent silver mineralisation.

Mining projects have long since presented challenges for the protection of the water environment. Lessons learnt from historical pollution incidents and increasingly stringent environmental controls have significantly improved the environmental performance of mines in developed countries. In contrast, water protection legislation and guidance in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, based on the æpolluter paysÆ principle, has not promoted the prevention of water pollution, and examples of poor environmental performance in mining still exist. However, there is now evidence of emerging legislation encouraging the protection of the water environment. This paper provides an overview of water protection legislation in the Russian Federation and Armenia and highlights some of the challenges facing international mining companies developing projects. A mining case study is described, which highlights how communities in Armenia increasingly value their water environment. Here, greater public participation in development projects is playing a vital role in influencing water protection legislation. It is considered that public opinion and emerging legislation will increasingly present challenges for the development of mining projects.

The Red Lake mine is one of the richest gold mines in the world. The primary mining methods are overhand and underhand cut and fill. Starting in 2003, Goldcorp initiated an expansion program at the mine. The expansion includes a new 6.55 m diameter hoisting shaft currently under construction. The shaft will be driven to a length of over 2180 m. The shaft will be used as a primary ventilation intake to the mine. In addition to the new hoisting shaft, a return air raise is being driven approximately 1690 m from surface. This raise will be a parallel return to the existing mine infrastructure. This paper describes the ventilation and climatic analyses performed in support of the expansion project. The study included a full mine ventilation survey, in situ rock mass measurements, analysing options related to mine layout, airway sizing calculations, air heating options, and climatic simulations. Specifications were prepared for an air heating system and main and booster fans. Analyses were also performed related to heat in the stoping areas namely caused by auxiliary fans and backfill with high cement content.

Mining regulatory authorities worldwide mandate frequent inspection of winder ropes used in shaft-equipped underground mines and ski lifts. Visual inspections are effective in identifying and assessing the type and severity of damage found in the exterior of the rope. In addition, electromagnetic or permanent magnet-based methods are used to identify broken wires, corrosion damage and other anomalies that occur anywhere within the core of wire ropes made of steel, which is a ferromagnetic material. The magnetic methods yield the loss of metallic area due to wire breaks and other damage in the ropeÆs section as well as local flaws that give rise to discontinuities in the magnetic field. The quantitative measurement of the loss of metallic area is indirectly related to the loss of breaking strength that is commonly used as a rope discard criterion. The ropes used in a mine winder in the Goldfields of Western Australia are inspected using Meraster 120B permanent magnet-based rope tester and their condition is assessed against published discard criteria.

Palabora Mining Company operates an integrated open pit mine, concentrator, smelter and refinery complex located in the Northern Province of South Africa. The Palabora open pit went into production in 1966, mining 30 000 t/d to produce some 62 000 tpa of copper. With continuous modification and improvement, a mining rate of 82 000 t/d, producing up to 135 000 tpa of refined copper, has been achieved. While these improvements have also enabled the mine life to be nearly doubled, the open pit will reach the end of its economic life by 2003. The Palabora orebody is vertical and the reserve extends to a depth of 1800 m over an area of 700 m by 200 m. Studies to assess the economics of mining the orebody by underground means began in the mid-1980s. These studies indicated that block caving is the lowest cost underground mining method that would generate a suitable return. In March 1996, a decision was made to develop a 30 000 t/d block cave mine that will extend the life of the Palabora Mining Company by a further 20 years. In terms of the relatively high rock strength and the resultant coarse fragmentation that is expected at the drawpoint, the Palabora cave can be considered rather unique when compared to other block cave operations. This paper describes the project in broad terms and details the mining method, particularly with respect to the cavability of the orebody and the design features to deal with the coarse fragmentation. The project commenced in July 1996 and final development of the undercut and drawbells is scheduled for completion in November 2003. This paper describes the status of the project and planning as of April 2000.
