The Mt Keith ultramafic intrusive extends for about 200 kilometres from Agnew in the south to Wiluna in the north. It forms the host for a number of nickel sulphide orebodies including Mt Keith and Honeymoon Well. Long fibre minerals are associated with the orebodies. The presence of these minerals impacts on the issue of tailings disposal from several standpoints, particularly the slurry beaching properties and dust generation from dry beaches. Central thickened discharge (CTD) is an innovative method of tailings disposal that involves stacking tailings in a low conical hill instead of storing them in cells. In appropriate circumstances this leads to savings in capital costs and operating expenditure. The method was introduced to Australia in 1981, and is currently employed at four operating mines, Elura and Peak Gold, both at Cobar in NSW, McArthur River in the Northern Territory, and Union Reefs near Pine Creek, also in the Northern Territory. It is the proposed method for Century Zinc and Ernest Henry, both in Queensland. The paper describes laboratory test work and design parameters for the application of the method to tailings disposal at Honeymoon Well and compares them with comparable data for other CTD systems. Of particular relevance for design purposes are beach slope, density, and water recovery. Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Honeymoon Well tailings samples to investigate dust generation from the dry beach surface and it was concluded that dust generation from an undisturbed beach would not occur because of crusting.

Technological developments in modem Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and associated back-up equipment are offering significant alternatives for mining operators to consider, in the selection of equipment for coal mine development drifts, roadways, longwall gate roads as well as metalliferous mining declines and development drives.Greater flexibility in handling variable ground conditions, muck disposal and radius of turn as well as advance rates, are just some of the areas where modem TBMs can accomplish the flexibility that mine operators require to achieve cost-effective developments.Compact TBMs are achieving this acceptance because of the fundamental design of a shielded machine containing electrics and hydraulics within the forward shell, ability to achieve tight radius of curvature and grades, and ability to provide highly flexible support systems to meet all possible ground conditions.However, a single TBM design will not suit all mine developments, as each development method - while having common goals with all mine developments - will also require certain unique criteria to be fulfilled.

A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. An internationally recognised and uniform method for classification, categorisation and designation of mineral and energy resources is not yet available. With the increasing need for reliable and comparable coal resource data it is necessary to standardise the traditional classification procedures by quantifying the three basic evaluation criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For well documented deposits, geostatistical methods can considerably improve classification quality. A review is undertaken of major classification with particular emphasis on those that incorporate limits on estimation error.A geostatistically based algorithm for classifying coal resources within the current Queensland and New South Wales codes has been developed.Application of the classification algorithm for resources from a number of seams exhibiting different structural characteristics is assessed. The method is found to give classification results that closely reflect the error associated with an estimate of resource quantities based on current sampling densities.lbis requires a careful geostatistical analysis with an emphasis on geological awareness. Resource category restrictions although albitrarily assigned should remain constant for all deposits being compared. This requires some engineering judgement with additional interpretation also required for isolated and peripheral block.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

The Twin Hills Gold Deposit is an example of a preserved, high level, epithermal system, with mineralisation introduced contemporaneous with deposition. The deposit is hosted within sediments of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Saint Anns Formation, of Cycle 1 Drummond Basin stratigraphy, situated in central Queensland. Prior to epithermal activity in the Twin Hills region, a lacustrine fan delta depositional environment existed, together with minor tuffaceous activity. An and palaeo climate, with occasional periods of torrential rainfall, together with a basin with faulted margins, allowed alluvial fan prograda- tion. Cyclical repetitions of the fan indicate repeated faulting and seismic activity took place during deposition. Significant gold mineralisation was first intersected at Twin Hills by Metana Minerals NL in 1988, after drill testing a "blind" target outlined by geological mapping and bedrock geochemistry.

As valuable minerals are more disseminated, there is a need for low-grade ores to be finely ground to liberate these valuable minerals. However, this has a negative impact on ultrafine mineral recovery as conventional separations processes such as gravity separation are no longer effective. Instead, fine particles can be recovered by froth flotation. Various novel reagents have been introduced along with development in flotation cell designs such as Jameson cell and column cells to improve performance and recovery of ultrafine valuables. This study, on the other hand, aims to recover the fines using a combination of commercially available reagents to selectively flocculate the valuables, so they are large enough to be recovered via conventional froth flotation cells. This technique if successful can be implemented in many existing industries that continue to use mechanical flotation cells that require particle sizes to be 50–150 μm for effective recovery (Ralston, 1992; Batterham and Moodie, 2005). Selective flocculation is not widely implemented in industries mainly due to the inability to float the aggregates ones they are formed and gangue entrapment within the aggregates which consequently affects the grade of concentrate recovered (Forbes, 2011). The major goal is to aggregate the minerals and float the aggregates unlike the more common industrial technique such as reverse flotation of hematite, where the aggregates itself is not recovered via flotation.

Tailings are generally deposited on or near to the mine sites, occupying the site area, and being an economic burden for mining companies. Tailings can cause several environmental impacts, such as leaking toxic substances and contaminating underground water, emitting greenhouse gases, and damaging natural bodies and wildlife. Geopolymerisation of mine waste effectively transforms mine waste into more valuable, environmentally friendly products. Geopolymers are inorganic aluminosilicate materials that are widely applied in the construction industry (Araya, Kraslawski and Cisternas, 2020). The high performance and the low-CO2 emission of geopolymers make this type of material potentially more desirable than ordinary cement, given that manufacturing one ton of traditional cement generates approximately 0.8 tons of CO2. This process is seen as a promising method for repurposing tailings and reducing the environmental impact of mining waste. However, the environmental impact of geopolymer production is not sufficiently comprehended (Mazzinghy et al, 2022). Moreover, geopolymerisation of mine waste can offer several economic benefits, including reduced waste management costs (Amari et al, 2019; He et al, 2022), reduced raw material costs, and potentially lower production costs. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. This study aims to demonstrate the potential environmental impacts of geopolymer concrete produced using mine wastes and industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS). For this, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was conducted on different geopolymer mix designs, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions results were compared to the ordinary cement. LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymerisation of mine wastes in various ways. One important impact category is GHG gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of the geopolymerisation of mine wastes via economic analysis (EA) to identify the key economic factors and trade-offs associated with repurposing mine wastes through geopolymerisation.

The Morning Star mine is owned by Hill 50 Gold NL. Gold is hosted in quartz-carbonate ¦stibnite ¦molybdenite veins that occur in a series of deformed, altered and metamorphosed mafic volcanics with subordinate sediments and felsic intrusive rocks. The irregular gold distribution and its relationship to structure and alteration intensity makes the definition of stoping limits difficult. Understanding the structural evolution of the orebodies and the contemporaneous and later structures that affect the orebodies has been very useful in this context. This paper reports on a detailed mapping exercise (as part of a more extensive and on-going investigation) and the integration of this mapping with other geological and grade control data in a 3D modelling environment to provide an expanded basis for stope design. Three types of mineralised zones can be discriminated based on the morphology of the veins within. They are:those associated with strongly folded, thick veins (approximately 1 m thick eg 05 orebody); those comprising planar, boudinaged and some folded veins which consolidate to form tabular, steeply dipping bodies (eg 010 orebody); and zones containing the above vein types and thin, highly deformed veins within zones of intensely foliated country rock that result in localised, irregularly distributed high-grade gold zones (eg 02 orebody). The mineralised zones associated with thick folded veins are typically predictable over many tens of vertical metres. The second and third types of ore zone is generally less predictable. Detailed mapping and structural kinematic studies indicate all ore zone types are affected by progressive deformation involving strong strain partitioning. It is interpreted that high strain zones, recognisable by intense foliation development and highly deformed veins, are the latest stage of a progressive deformation which approximates bulk flattening. Structural controls on mineralisation can be defined at two different scales.Regional scale folding has deformed a sequence of mafic volcanics with interlayered sediments and felsic intrusives. Initial geometry of felsic bodies relative to orientation of the primary lithological layering and the bulk shortening direction is interpreted to be critical for initiation and development of strongly dilatant zones within this package of rocks, and Local scale dilation is evidenced by development of several vein sets whose range in orientations and opposed vergence relationships suggest a pre-folding origin comprising both extensional and hybrid shear-extensional types. Continued deformation resulted in folding of these veins with strong strain partitioning. Major vein packages are closely spatially associated with the felsic/mafic contact and an interpreted early structure which appears to have partitioned early dilation. This structure is now obscured by strong deformation but is currently represented by a zone of planar veins.

An experienced drill operator is able to make a log of a drill hole defining physical properties of the earth such as hardness or structure as they vary with depth. This log is based on intuition or how the drill æfeelsÆ. Rock characterisation using measure while drilling (MWD) parameters aims at refining this intuition into a package that accurately defines the properties of the subsurface as the drill bit propagates. Subsurface investigation using MWD parameters aims to combine physical drill parameters: Pull down force, rotary speed, penetration rate, torque and vibration in such a way to yield real time rock properties. MWD is investigation in its most primitive form, put simply MWD is merely a physical probe æfeelingÆ what the rock mass is at depth.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

PT Freeport Indonesia is currently building the DOZ mine. It is a 25 000 tonne/day block caving operation which is scheduled to reach designed production levels by the fourth quarter of 2002. This paper describes some of the issues and challenges faced by the operation when introducing a new undercut method part way through the project. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well as the expected benefits of the new method.

Long Shaft has traditionally been seen as one of the most challenging mines in the Kambalda area with operations having been suspended by the previous owners in 1999. When mining recommenced in October 2002, the current owners (Lightning Nickel) decided that a different approach was required for mining operations in such an aggressive geotechnical environment. This paper describes how Lightning Nickel has successfully and safely operated the Long Shaft complex on a traditional mining approach, which encompasses the key learnings of the previous owners.

Combining ultramafic mine tailings and acidic mine drainage via mineral carbonation to sequester carbon dioxide, presents an opportunity to minimise waste on mine sites. Low pH mine water with trace element concentrations can be effectively treated by high magnesium mine tailings, a useful source of finely ground reactive matrix. By using milled tailings for mineral carbonation, there are negligible energy requirements for communition of ore rocks to reduce particle size. This study aimed to assess the technical applicability of reacting ultramafic tailings and acidic mine water through mineral carbonation technology in the mining industry. Dissolution has been identified as the rate limiting stage in mineral carbonation; hence the study focused on identifying optimal dissolution conditions. Ultramafic tailings (particle size <100 µm) derived from serpentinite ore, were reacted with a typical mine water that was synthesised in the laboratory. Through variances in the solid to liquid ratios and temperature of dissolution, a maximum five per cent magnesium dissolution efficiency was reached at 50 g/L and 100°C. The acidic mine water was neutralised (from pH <2 to pH ~6) and iron, copper and zinc ion concentrations reduced significantly during the formation of solid precipitates. Carbonation was undertaken by injecting carbon dioxide into the magnesium-rich solution to form stable carbonates. The experimental work demonstrated proof of concept; however, dissolution efficiency and carbon dioxide sequestration was low, indicating that further research would be required before larger scale implementation.CITATION:Malli, H, Bouzalakos, S and Timms, W, 2015. Hydraulic backfill is generally retained in stopes using permeable barricades. Mitchell et al (1975), Mitchell (1992) and Grice (1989) have shown that under normal drainage conditions, barricades experience low levels of loading. Cowling et al (1988) have also shown that barricades are susceptible to piping failures if excess water has ponded on the upper backfill surface and if leakage of backfill from the barricades has occurred. During 1997, six hydraulic backfill barricades failed in four different Australian mines. Fortunately, in each case, the quantity of backfill slurry released was small, and no injuries to personnel nor damage occurred. Detailed investigation of two of the incidents showed that the primary cause of failure could be attributed to the delivery of excess quantities of transport water from the low-density slurry. For each of the incidents investigated there was evidence of the development of piping failures, which resulted in hydrostatic loading conditions on the barricades from the ponded water on the upper backfill surface. The circular failure surfaces in the barricades were characteristic of the application of point loading conditions. This paper discusses the circumstances that led to these incidents and analyses the modes of failure. The standards for the safe operating of hydraulic backfill systems are reviewed along with requirements for ongoing management and control. The design requirements of barricade construction are analysed and some appropriate guidelines introduced.

Coal production from Coal & Allied's Hunter Valley No 1 open cut is presently hauled 10 km by road to washing and train loading facilities at Liddell. This road haul, using bottom dump trucks on a bitumen sealed road, presents some unique earthmover tyre problems. Sound tyre management has controlled one potentially serious problem, that of heat damage, implicit with such a long haul. Tread abrasion or wear is therefore the limiting tyre performance factor. Study of abrasion mechanisms and interpretation of abrasion patterns has facilitated an understanding of the wear processes involved. This understand- ing has highlighted the importance of front tyre wheel alignment. The development of irregular wear is shown to be related to the mildness of the abrasion and methods of remving irregular wear are presented. In conclusion haulage by large off highway trucks on long sealed haul roads has been eooncoically and technically successful at Hunter Valley No 1. Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. This paper reviews methods for grade estimation in short-term mine planning for block caving. Two particular tools are used: Ordinary Kriging and Simple Kriging with moving averages. It is also considered the influence of draw characteristics on the grade estimation process. Reference is made to mine case study data and analysis. These demonstrate that operational grade estimation is not a trivial process. It must take into consideration: the grade variability (in terms of ore and dilution), sampling interval, geological and geotechnical characteristics, geometrical layout and draw characteristics. Significant improvements appear possible in short-term planning if variogram analysis, as well as kriging methodologies, are introduced into the operational grade estimation process.

It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives.Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring?It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.There is nothing new about change in the mineral industry, it has been happening for thousands of years and it will continue as long as civilisation exists on earth. One type of change is economic and we are all aware of the rises and falls which occur in the prices of metals and minerals (Figure 1). When these have happened in an orderly manner, and could be predicted and planned for, it has been possible to take advantage of the benefits and minimise ill-effects, but when they were sudden and precipitate, and could not be predicted, the consequences were serious. The extreme example, of course, was the oil price shock of the 1970s which had such disastrous effects on industry and society.Other types of change are social, cultural and political. They have all been important in recent years and will continue to be so in the future.But it is technological change which may well be the most important because its effects are profound and irreversible, and alter irrevocably the way in which we live. So in discussing the mineral industry in a changing world I will talk specifically about technological change.
