The anode, tank house and wire bar plant and operations are described with particular reference to those features of design and methods which are characteristic of this refinery at its inception.Reference is also made to auxiliary equipment, transport and materials handling facilities.The work of commissioning the plant late in 1959 is discussed and comment is made on the organisation of construction and origin of the equipment.LOCATION OF PLANTThe site chosen for the copper refinery is on level ground adjacent to the junction of the Mount Isa and the main north-south railway lines at Stuart near Townsville, Queensland. Blister for refining is received by rail from Mount Isa. Refined products are taken 10 miles by road to Townsville Harbour for shipment to other Australian ports or overseas, or despatched by rail direct from the plant.Adequate room for expansion was provided to cover copper refining and any associated industry. The layout of future extensions was planned and space reserved for them before detailing the original units of the main refinery.The initial plant also provides convenient storage facilities and is laid out to derive the greatest benefit from prevailing northerly breezes during the humid tropical summer.As far as possible, the working areas are located so that the prevailing winds cool them as they traverse the buildings.These factors are of very great importance since this is believed to be the only copper refinery in the tropics operating with all white labour and in any case the Company set out to provide the best possible conditions for its operating personnel.

The demand for iron ore has increased dramatically in the last years and is forecast to remain on a stable high production level for years to come. ItÆs expected that the world economy is facing a stable continuous growth of iron ore to two billion tonnes and more over the next decades (Beddows, 2007). Furthermore it is expected that the existing and known high-grade ore resources will decline, and the iron ore industry will be forced to implement more and more advanced beneficiation plants. As a consequence of the more complex beneficiation requirements, there will be a need for modern solutions for iron ore dewatering that are reliable mechanically as well as cost effective and with high capacity per unit at the same time. Conventional vacuum filtration methods have been the most prevalent in fine iron ore dewatering. Product quality needs, lower ore grades, complex mineralogy and energy costs have resulted in iron ore producers seeking better solutions for dewatering, in particular pelletising feed. New advanced filtration methods have been introduced to the market. This paper describes how these modern methods are answering the needs of the industry. Performance of advanced dewatering technologies (pressure filtration and ceramic capillary action filtration) for iron ore applications has been studied, and the findings are based on both industrial and pilot scale experiences on different materials. For example, the results show that the cake moisture content of iron ore pelletising feed can be optimised more effectively by using modern filtration technologies. By selecting the most suitable and adjustable equipment, the effects of variations of feed material on downstream processes can be minimised and the possibilities of processing more difficult raw materials to high-quality pellets are better. The Larox Corporation develops, designs and manufactures industrial filters and is a leading technology company in its field. Larox is a full service solution provider in filtration for separating solids from liquids. As such, this paper compares the new developments in this market area with the prevailing known vacuum filtration technology, but focuses on a comparison between capillary action filters and rotary vacuum disc filters (RVDF). The trade name CeramecG is used to differentiate the Larox filter from the generic term.

The 1989 feasibility study of the chessy, france, copper, zinc, pyrite and barite orebody was based upon a classical flowsheet. The flowsheet included, three stages of crushing, conventional rod and ball mill grinding in series, and sequential flotation of four products utilising conventional mechanical flotation cells. To improve the profitability of the project the partners commenced a search for ways to reduce the projected capital and operating costs of the proposed development. This paper presents the improvements in the projected capital and operating costs as a result of design and concept changes. The major changes included: ò the simplification of the crushing section with the adoption of semi autogenous grinding (SAG) milling of primary crushed ore. ò the deferral of pyrite and barite flotation circuits until market conditions were positive. ò the simplification of the flotation circuit by the use of column flotation cells for combined rougher/cleaner duty. ò the purchase of second hand equipment. The result of these changes was to reduce the capital cost estimate of the plant from US$ 21 million to US$ 11 million and operating cost estimates from US$ 18.90 to US$ 13.60 per tonne of ore for a decrease of approximately ten per cent in potential revenues.

Detailed cash flow forecasts have always been almost essential as a basis for judging the viability of proposed new mining projects. In recent years attempts have been made explicitly to take account, in such forecasts, of the uncertainties surrounding the assumptions upon which they are based. With the risk analysis approach, Monte Carlo simulation of the cash flows indicates in probability terms the combined effect of these uncertain basic assumptions. While the use of risk analysis has been widely discussed, few specific applications to real projects have been reported. The application of such an analysis in the feasibility study of the large new Deelkraal gold mine presently being established on the Far West Witwatersrand gold fields by the Gold Fields Group in South Africa is described in the paper. The paper also indicates how one of the major sources of uncertainty, namely the gold content of the ore, can be`quantified in objective probability terms. This feature distinguishes the application fran other published accounts in which only subjective probability assessments have been utilised.

Disseminated, gold-bearing sulfide minerals hosted in sheared, wall rock metasediments and clay alteration zones comprise one of the dominant styles of Palaeozoic orogenic gold mineralisation within the Reefton Goldfield, and is exemplified by OceanaGold’s Globe Mine. This study begins the exploration and characterisation of the gold-arsenic-antimony mineralisation hosted within the dominant lithologies of the Globe-Progress shear zone. The main gold-bearing sulfides are pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are not compositionally uniform across the Globe-Progress shear zone. Pyrite from the mineralised greywacke and argillite has higher As contents than pyrite in the host rock and pug breccia. Furthermore, the mineralised greywacke and argillite pyrite are enriched in As from core to rim. The 3D models based on bulk assays reveal a significant correlation in the distribution of Au, As and Sb. The interpolant for Sb envelops those for Au and As, which in turn are very similar to each other in their vertical and lateral extents across the shear zone. This result is consistent with earlier findings that the occurrence of stibnite represents a separate and likely later phase of mineralisation relative to that represented by the formation of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite both of which exert a stronger control on the distribution of As.CITATION:Durance, P M J, Christie, A B, McIntosh, C and Carder, M, 2015. According to our experimental results, the following oxygen probe recommended, that is, the magnesia stabilized zirconia was employed as a solid electrolyte and Fe.FexO solid elect- rode was used as a reference electrode. Using such an oxygen probe, we tried to measure the oxygen potentials in molten metals, mattes and gases in the following fields of non-ferrous metal industry, molten copper in the side launder before casting, molten crude lead in the forehearth of ISP blast furnace, molten copper mattes in the forehearth of blast furnace and in the settler of flash smelting furnace, gas in the settler of copper flash smelting furnace and flue gas in the electric furnace for ferro-silicon. In the past ten years or so, many experi- mental results in the field of fundamental studies have confirmed that the equilibrium oxygen potential could be measured conveniently and accurately by an electrochemical method using a zirconia solid electrolyte. Recently, such an electrochemical technique has been also applied to a device for physicochemical invest- igation or process control in the non-ferrous metal industry. Such a device consists of an oxygen con- centration cell with stabilized zirconia, and it is commonly called an "oxygen probe" or "oxygen sensor".

Utilisation of the InSAR technique for monitoring of subsidence in mining areas, employing open pit and underground mining methods, has large potential due to sensitivity and safety issues associated with usage of the classical surveying techniques. InSAR can also be very competitive concerning the cost of provided results. However, there are a few issues that may significantly limit InSAR applicability for subsidence monitoring in mining areas. The altered terrain topography, involving steep slopes and deep pits, may lead to the layover of radar signal for specific satellite and pit geometry. Also, the highly dynamic character of subsidence induced by mining, especially using mass mining methods, may lead to issues such as apparent heave and ambiguous results. In this paper the authors analyse the above-mentioned issues and demonstrate how InSAR technology was applied, as a supporting system, to monitor large scale and highly dynamic subsidence for a real case study in Western Australia.

Recent geological mapping has indicated changes to the stratigraphy of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The new stratigraphy and interpreted depositional environments are examined in relation to the distribution and genesis of stratabound mineral deposits. Basinward correlations are made with near-shore carbonate and psammite-rudite units in the Rum Jungle region. Most other units in the same region are condensed, indicating long- lived supratidal, intertidal or shallow conditions during most of the depositional cycle. Units containing most of the mineralisation represent the earliest near-shore developments of strongly reducing partly pelitic and evaporitic conditions and contain mainly uranium and base metals. Restricted distal, strongly reducing facies with associated felsic volcanics are also well mineralised, and mainly contain gold, silver and base metals, although some deposits are probably genetically related to synorogenic or postorogenic granites. Mineralisation in other facies is almost all epigenetic hydrothermal in origin, although minor mineralisation is related to volcanics, or dolomitic parts of the sequence. Areas of potential mineralisation include near-shore environments in the north, and carbonate reefs along growth faults. Two suites of postorogenic felsic volcanics and related sediments deposited in shallow water within and around northwest and east-northeast rift systems, overlie the metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the south. The suites have potential for volcanogenic deposits, mostly of uranium, gold and copper.

This paper describes the latest open pit optimisation techniques,which now go beyond merely finding an optimal outline. The paper starts by briefly reviewing pit design techniques before optimsation. It then goes on to describe the pit optimisation procedure and the extensions to it which allow the automatic generation of nested families of pits. Next, the properties of families of nested pits are examined and the paper explains how they can be used to simulate certain mining sequences and schedules. Finally, we describe an actual study which was done using this kind of Software.

The Loy Yang Optr, Cut is a brown coal mine bring developed in the Latrobe Valley region located some 160 kin south-east of Melbourne, Victoria. The mine has been designed to supply a mine mouth power station at a rate that will rise to 32 million tonnes per year by the mid 1990's. Continuous mining metnuds are employed using bucket Whtel excav- ators and conveyors. This paper describes the basis of the design of the Loy Yang continuous mining system ano cne experience of four years of initial operation.

During the reduction of iron oxide pellets in the blast furnace it has been found that catastrophic swelling (up to 300% volume increase) can occur. Although the burden preparation conditions can be designed to avoid this phenomenon the exact reason and mechanism of the swelling has yet to be clearly identified. Swelling of the burden is undesirable since it reduces the interparticulate voidage in the blast furnace thus reducing gas flow through the stack resulting in low production rates of iron. The present study differs significantly from previous experiments in that reduction is carried out on single crystals of wustite thus the problems of control of gas composition and specimen preparation are minimised. The microstructures formed on reduction have been examined by optical and scanning microscopy. Pure wustite and wustite doped with various levels of CaO have been examined after reduction in controlled CO-CO 2 gas mixtures at 968¦C. The catastrophic swelling on reduction coincides with the formation of an unusually open iron structure in which the iron appears as whiskers or needles as previously reported. The spacing and thickness of the needles are shown to vary with impurity content and gas composition. Metallographic examination has shown in addition, however, that the whiskers do not necessarily constitute the only product form of the iron produced and in CaO containing wustites with less than - 2% CaO there is a transition from needle growth to porous growth of iron. Thus the % swelling of the oxide particles is dependent on the initial size of the oxide grains. Samples of FeO - 10% CaO exhibited a previously unreported product inorphology associated with the nucleation of 2CaO.Fe203.

The longwall system with caving is the most common mining system in Polish Collieries and the extraction is carried out simultaneously on several levels and in different seams. The extent and diversity of the methane hazard occurring is strictly connected to the specific geological and gas conditions as well as to the applied mining methods. Taking these factors into consideration the following methane drainage methods are applied as additional means of combatting the methane hazard in Polish gassy coal mines: 1. predrainage by means of boreholes drilled from the surface, 2. predrainage from stone drivages and devel- opment workings, 3. degasification of coal extraction workings, and 4. degasification of sealed-off areas/old goaves. Predrainage gave satisfactory results when holes were drilled from the surface or from underground workings, but only to depths to 300 m. It was necessary to adapt methane drain- age methods to the geological and mining con- ditions as gassiness increased with depth. The results of methane capture, both pre- drainage and post drainage were obtained by investigating several gassy mines.

O.B.E., the third New Zealander to be honoured with Honorary Membership of The Institute. Sir William Hudson and Mr. C. H. Benney were the others.Mr. Bradshaw has been an Affiliate Member of The Institute since the formation of the New Zealand Branch in 1966. Like his friend Matt Benney. Bob Bradshaw is an accountant by training. Last June he retired as senior partner of the firm of chartered accountants, now known as Wilkinson Wilberfoss, with which he served from January 1929.Mr. Bradshaw grew up in New Zealand attending the Terrace School in Wellington, the New Plymouth Boys' High School where he was a boarder, and completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the university now known as the Victoria University of Wellington. He is an elected Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and an Associate of the United Kingdom Institute of Cost and Works Accountants.

High grade ores were intersected in 1981 by a scout drill carried out by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan during a reconnaissance dril ling programme. The original aim of the hole was to explore a deep target where geophysical anczralies overlapped the abandoned old drifts (gravity- high, resistivity-low by airborne EM, and resistivity-low near the surface and high at depth by Schlumberger deep sounding). Subsequently, a follow-up drilling programm was commenced by the Sumitcrro Metal Mining Co Ltd, and all the 18 holes intersected high grade ores. The resources were then "guestimated" to contain ca.120 tonnes gold with an average grade of 80g/t Au between -40m and +120n a.s.l. The underground development was started in December 1982 and the first crosscut intersected the ore body at 100m level (a.s.l.) in July 1985.

Powercoal Pty Ltd operates eight underground coal mines in New South Wales and produces coal for both domestic power stations and the export market. Approximately 40% of total production is from continuous miners. Over the past five years, place change mining methods have been introduced to improve productivity from continuous miners. This has involved utilising the existing coal clearance system from the continuous miner to the ratio feeder using trailing cable shuttle cars.By late 1996 average productivity at Cooranbong Colliery using this system had plateaued at 800 tonnes per eight hour shift. A number of factors were identified to increase average productivity to 1500 tonnes per eight hour shift. An improved coal clearance system was one of the factors identified.

The Glenrock Group forms the uppermost part of the Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous Burdekin Basin sequence in the Townsville hinterland, north Queensland. As redefined, three formations make up the Glenrock Group. The Percy Creek Volcanics (base), the dominantly epiclastic Mount Douglas Formation, and the Horse Pocket Volcanics (top). The Ellenvale beds unconformably overlie the Mount Douglas Formation and Percy Creek Volcanics and have been excluded from the Glenrock Group as defined by Wyatt and Jell (1980). Three facies associations are recognised in the Mount Douglas Formation: Alluvial Plain facies, Alluvial Fan facies and Lacustrine facies.Deposition of the Glenrock Group, began with the eruption of massive basalt and basaltic andesite lavas, probably in a volcanic arc setting. With time, the volcanism evolved to become more dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Waning of the volcanic activity appeared to coincide with uplift of source areas (probably to the west). Deposition on an alluvial plain during this waning volcanic cycle, gave way to alluvial fans at the margins of the uplifted terrain. As the uplift ceased and the system became more mature, the alluvial fans gave way to widespread lakes. Rhyolitic ignimbrite and airfall tuff, interbedded with the alluvial plain, alluvial fan and lacustrine facies, indicate that some volcanism continued, probably vented in the uplifted terrain to the west.

Rock formation at shallow depths is generally associated with complex geology consisting of many joints, fractures, bedding planes, etc. Fragmentation results from primary blasts in such strata are therefore significantly influenced by structural discontinuities. To evaluate the role of discontinuities, which is of great use in the design of blasts in such conditions, a two-stage investigation program was taken up. In the first stage, model scale tests were conducted with single and double holes with the strike of discontinuities parallel and perpendicular to the face. Later, field studies were conducted in a limestone mine and a coal mine. Blast patterns were modified based on the results obtained from model scale blasts. Secondary blasting was taken as a measure to assess blast performance in the field, whereas mean fragment size, fine and coarse fragmentation indices were considered as fragmentation measures in model scale tests. Model tests indicated confinement of explosive energy by the discontinuities surrounding blasthole. Crater shape and size were significantly influenced by the orientation of joints with respect to the face. Modified blast designs with decreased burden x spacing patterns resulted in improved fragmentation in the field. A reduction of about 12 per cent in explosive consumption was recorded with modified blast designs. Boulder formation was observed to decrease by about 79 per cent as well.

Longwalling has reached a high standard both in Germany and Australia and most improvements should be expected in planning, monitoring and control. Double drum shearer have electric drives to 1000 kW and automatic height control is under development. Conveyor pans to 40mm thickness and chains to 2300 kN breaking load are in use with controls for pretension and load compensation under test.Trends in support are towards two leg shields with loads to 3850 kN per leg and electrohydraulic controls. Expert systems have been devised for planning and diagnosis tasks. With increases in technical standards, staff qualification standards at rising too, drawing attention to training requirements for modem personnel.

The application of high-resolution seismic reflection to map structure and/or mineralisation in hard rock environments has progressed significantly in the last decade. Improvements in equipment, field practice, processing and understanding has seen the seismic reflection technique emerge as a cost-effective tool for high-resolution three-dimensional structural and lithology mapping to depths far greater and with superior accuracy than other more conventional geophysical techniques.This paper outlines results and preliminary interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic reflection surveys aimed at defining fault zones and locations for quartz load development in favourable host lithologies at the Cracow low-sulfidation epithermal gold system in Queensland, Australia.As this is possibly the first time that high-resolution seismic reflection data has been used to define the structurally-controlled location of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, an important aspect of this work was the derisking or due diligence steps taken prior to commissioning the full 3D surveys at each site. This included full wave sonic logging, vertical seismic profiling and trial 2D lines. Interpretation of the 2D profiles and the drilling of interpreted structure provided the confidence to proceed with the full 3D survey.The advantage of collecting 3D data extends beyond ensuring that the received reflections are located correctly in 3D space. The final 3D data cube can potentially map the entire fault network, thus highlighting flexures and changes in orientation of the structures both vertically and along strike, which is an important aspect in the deposition of gold and for direct targeting.CITATION:Smith, R, Cook, J, Pike, S and Pridmore, D, 2015. Geological evaluations of coal deposits have been traditionally undertaken in a somewhat manual manner. Information is collected downhole by chip sampling, coring and using downhole geophysical logging. This information is then interpreted by an experienced geologist to define the coal and noncoal lithological units. Coal units were subsequently correlated to provide data for structural modelling. In recent years a number of advancements in interpretation techniques have been made based on Artificial Intelligence. This paper describes an integrated geological interpretation system based on maximised use of Al techniques. The first part describes the lithological interpretation which uses a number of boreholes with both logged lithology and downhole geophysical logs. This information provides a learning set of data to the neural network. The second part concentrates on the correlation of both coal and noncoal units from borehole to borehole. Problems in this area, in a manual sense, are interpretation of correlation across weathering zones and other geological anomolies. The technique is based on pattern recognition and dynamic programming techniques where a correlation matrix is developed relating all holes with their maximum correlations.
