Conceptually coal reserve assessment is simple but in practice it presents many problems. These arise from the origin and geological history of coal seams and from the diverse nature of the coal itself. The suitability of a coal for a particular use depends upon its type and so sheer quantity of reserves does not guarantee the adequacy of coal reserves for all requirements. Codes have been formulated to counteract the effects of subjectivity in reserve assessment. The code for calculating and reporting coal reserves published by the Standing Committee on Coalfield Geology of New South Wales has wide acceptance but the Committee itself recognises that it has shortcomings. Currently the Committee is engaged on the commendable but difficult endeavour of formulating a code that will meet the needs of scientific rigour and professional and commercial ethics and that will allow the specification of an assessment method without constraining it. It is generally agreed in the coal industry that the assessment of coal reserves can not conveniently be incorporated into codes formulated for other resources.

A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. Generally, the acceptable parameter for predicting the intensity of ground vibration due to a blast is the amount of explo ive u ed and the distance from the explo ion. A eries of closely controlled tests were carried out and it was observed that the degree of confinement or burden of an explosive charge play an important role in the variation of the transmitted magnitude of the shock wave through the ground.The intensity of the shock wave increases with burial depth or with greater confinement of an explosion until a critical depth is reached.Beyond this critical depth, the magnitude of ground vibration remain constant. This is an important finding, which explains the anomalies between the expected level and the monitored ground vibration in a particular situation.

Operations at two open cut mines have so far commenced on two out of the five potentially mineable seams in the Fair Hill - German Creek Coal Measures. Due to seam splitting, up to seven mining units are present in the Dysart Seam interval at Peak Downs giving a total of 12 mining units in the section. The coal is low to medium volatile type and produces strong coke. Rank increases and fluidity decreases in the southern part of the area.

The paper outlines the development in the control of dust in Australia over the last 20 years. Factors influencing dust make at the faces are discussed. The effect of high production systems is analysed. Changes in dust standards and results of dust sampling on longwalls and continuous miner panels are given. Research conducted on air curtains and water infusion on dust control on longwall faces is presented along with recommendations for future research. It is found that both dust curtains and water infusion can cut dust mak by 50" each when applied separately.

They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. Mount Isa Mines Limited has 25 rod and ball mills of various sizes installed in two Concentrators at Mount Isa. A continuing investigation into installation, design and materials of liners for these mills has been in progress since the early sixties. Both manual and mechanical methods of liner installation are used and described. Materials for the various applications have been evaluated, mainly by field trials. Design of liners has also been evaluated by field trials and the history of trials in No.4 Concentrator is given. The purpose of the investigation has been to reduce the cost of mill lining and the life of many linings has been greatly increased as a result of this work.

In engineering applications of explosives for rock breaking, the released energy is expended mainly into heat, rock crushing and fracturing, seismic waves, air blast, and noise. Those parts of energy which pass into seismic waves and air wave create environmental problems since they are transmitted away from the blast site. In order to predict the environmental effects accurately, one must be able to predict the energy distribution at the source. The energy distribution at the source is significantly controlled by the blast constriction. Consequently, the accuracy of prediction and control of ground vibrations generated by blasting is affected by various matrices of blasting constriction.

Various aspects of the history of mining at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NHHC) are examined. There are some discussions about the various methods used to mine the pillars left after the primary mining operations, with an enphasis being placed on the more modern pillar mining methods. Some new pillar mining proposals are presented. INTRODUCTION In the past, pillar reserves at ZC/NBHC have been scheduled for mining by labour intensive and high unit cost mining methods. These methods include both undercut and fill and overhand square set timber stoping. Recent technological advances in large diameter longhole drilling and high charge density explosives have culminated in the mechanised Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining method and this method has been successfully used for the extraction of two pillars at NBHC and more stopes are planned. However the use of VCR methods for mining pillars at ZC/NBHC is restricted to approximately 50 per cent of the total pillar reserves and it appears that high cost methods will be needed to mine the remaining Pillars.

The Sepon Copper Project is located in the Savannakhet Province of Laos PDR and is operated by Lane Xang Minerals Ltd (LXML). An Ausenco - Bateman Engineering joint venture, the Khanong Development Group (KDG) managed engineering, procurement and construction of the project. The plant was fully commissioned in March 2005, two weeks ahead of schedule. The plant is designed to produce 60 000 tpa of cathode copper. The process flow sheet includes a pressure oxidation (POX) circuit that leaches pyrite flotation concentrate to generate ferric ions and sulfuric acid for use in atmospheric leaching of a predominantly chalcocite ore. The process is unique in that the chemistry in the autoclave is forced to produce a basic ferric sulfate precipitate for downstream recovery of ferric iron. This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning of the pressure oxidation circuit. The challenges imposed on construction and commissioning due to the remote location of the site, landlocked status and underdeveloped infrastructure in Laos are highlighted.

Controlled recirculation of nine ventila- tion air is becoming an acceptable practice world-wide. A brief review of operating and planned schemes is given which illustrates the various purposes for using controlled recircu- lation in different types of mines. A de- tailed description is given of the operating and proposed schemes on South African gold mines. This is followed by a description of some theoretical and experimental work which has recently been carried out into certain important aspects of controlled recircula- tion. This includes: safety systems, dust filtration, blast contaminant removal, radia- tion hazards and the development of an expert computer program for the design of controlled recirculation systems.

Many Australian tunnelling and mining companies regularly investigate different methods or equipment in an attempt to keep ahead of their competition. Sometimes the result is a new approach or process which wins a tender or provides an advanced solution to a problem.The Australian Government has a policy of encouraging forward thinking among Australian companies and provides a range of incentives. One of these incentives is currently available retrospectively to 1985 - 86, and the registration process is relatively simple with only one form to be completed. Companies who investigate methods of raising productivity could be reimbursed for the costs of the investigation.
