To increase the efficiency and improve the quality of diamond drilling at Olympic Dam, mine geologists have adapted and modified common practices in order to overcome the challenges imposed by such a unique environment. Mine geologists have to take into account both the complex geology during the diamond drill hole design phase, as well as incorporating diamond drilling into the larger-scale scheduling process already employed at Olympic Dam. This study seeks to explore how such modifications have evolved over time.The geology of Olympic Dam influences the design process of diamond drill holes, particularly due to the variation of lithology and alteration, as well as the presence of magnetite and major structures within the orebody. Exclusion zones are used to manage interactions with existing and planned mining activities, and their size is dependent upon the geology of the area. Specific deviation checks are used to monitor the deviation of diamond drill holes with respect to these?zones.The highly interactive environment of Olympic Dam requires unique planning for diamond drilling, resulting in the production and implementation of both long- and short-term schedules. Long-term schedules are targeted at determining drilling locations and ensuring drilling is completed prior to stope planning, while short-term schedules aid in enabling access to ensure timely set-up of drill sites. Estimated drilling rates, determined by expected lithologies and historical data, feed into the short-term schedule to assist in managing the operation and minimising the downtime of diamond drill rigs. A mine geologist is appointed as a diamond drill coordinator to organise and manage diamond drilling at a scheduling and operational level, streamlining the entire process.Analysis of historical data shows a strong correlation between implementation of the aforementioned practices and improved drilling rates. This study shows the importance of adapting universal tasks to particular environments and circumstances. Mine geologists at Olympic Dam continue to acquire knowledge to further improve the modified drilling practices as operational requirements, production pressures and economic factors change.CITATION:Taylor, J and Dubowik, A, 2014. This paper describes the development of an approach to sustainable development for application at the feasibility study stage for a proposed bauxite mine near the community of Aurukun, south of Weipa on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The general environment for development was complex in all dimensions. In particular, the socio-demographic profile of the Aurukun community (population 1200) characterised it as being amongst the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. The traditional owners of the area, the Wik and Wik-Way people, were at the forefront in the efforts of Indigenous people in Australia to secure land rights over the past 30 years, and they had previous experience negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement) with Rio Tinto Alcan, the operators of the Weipa bauxite mine. Through this they had shown a well-founded sense of entitlement with respect to the development of resources on their traditional land. The Queensland State Government had recently cancelled an existing mining lease over the bauxite resource as the holder of the tenement had not fulfilled the terms of a development agreement that had been in place for 30 years. The Government was anxious to avoid any future æbankingÆ of the resource, and had decided to offer tenure to the resource on an international competitive basis, subject to the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. This would require a negotiation process with traditional owners and potentially involve companies with whom the traditional owners had no existing relationship (typically developed during the projectÆs exploration phase) and who possibly had no project development experience in Australia. As well, the State Government envisaged an approach to development that drew on the significant work that industry and other stakeholders had undertaken over the previous ten to 15 years, commencing with the mining, minerals and sustainable development (MMSD) process. This work was aimed at rectifying acknowledged deficiencies with industry recognition of stakeholder interests, in particular with respect to environmental management and socioeconomic development. The approach adopted aimed to define the strategic community interests and sustainable development outcomes to which the development of the resource would be expected to contribute, and to embody these within an easily usable management structure that could be applied to each stage of project development from feasibility study through to mine closure. The logical framework (AusAID, 2006; ICMM, 2005) was the management tool utilised to order the identified interests and desired outcomes. The structure included components aligned with the key areas of development interest expressed by the community, and the initial baseline sustainable development plan (SDP) developed established component objectives, outcomes, indicative outputs and activities for the feasibility stage of the project. This established an objective framework to guide potential bidders when developing their response to the State GovernmentÆs Request for Proposal. The paper will describe the evolution of the competitive process and the parallel process for development of the SDP. While the institutional environment was politically and socially complex, the use of simple visual representations of the environment and the analysis and ordering of issues, objectives and criteria through methods such as stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach, enable the development of a dialogue on the contribution that the development of a mining project can make to sustainable community development, and for the development of an agreed program of community support to capture the contribution. The use of the logical framework was found to have good functionality for plan development. Achieving plan outcomes though, is highly dependent on the skill of key project personnel in facilitation, team building, conflict resolution and leadership, as well as their ability to influence the behaviour of key stakeholders with the capacity and authority to require the integration of local economic development criteria in to key project development decisions.

The transport network in Europe is probably one of the most important systems for the European economy and society. Trans-national transport routes play a vital role in the traffic of goods and the supply of the population. In this respect, critical road infrastructures, like bridges, tunnels or control centres, can have a bottleneck function. Any disturbance of these structures could lead to negative consequences for the population and the economy as a whole.Project SecMan – Security Manual – is a simple four-step procedure for the identification of critical road infrastructures; assessment of these infrastructures regarding various man-made threats and the determination of effective protection measures was developed. These methodologies are summarised and combined into a comprehensive best-practice manual that allows for a trans-national structured and holistic security-risk-management approach for owners and operators of road infrastructures in Europe.Currently no common processes, methodologies or standards exist in Europe regarding the consideration of security relevant events for critical road transport infrastructures, eg tunnels, control centres and bridges. Attacks on the former can have severe short- and long-term effects with high media attention. A trans-national risk management approach would increase the possibilities for prevention as well as mitigation. A trans-national emergency response strategy would increase preparedness, as well as facilitating and accelerating the reaction in the case of an event.The main objective of the project is to develop a practical process for the identification of critical road infrastructures based on generally accepted security aspects. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baizhangzi gold deposit is located in the northern North China Craton. The structural and lithological controls on the location and geometry of orebodies were studied through geologic survey, ore spatial configuration analysis and structural analysis. The orebodies of the deposit comprise auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold-bearing sulfides. The auriferous quartz-sulfide veins are dominantly hosted by the NNE- (and NE- and NW-) trending faults, which are subsidiary structures of the regional NNE-trending F2 fault. The subsidiary NNE-trending faults, having sinistral reverse kinematics, are associated with the sinistral reverse kinematics event of the F2 fault, which happened under a regional S–N-oriented compression stress field. The subsidiary NE- and NW-trending faults appear to be compressive and extensional respectively. These NE- (and NW-) trending faults are restricted to the granite intrusion and are associated with a sinistral strike-slip event of the F2 fault, which reactivated under a NW–SE-oriented compression stress field. It makes significant influence on geological evolution and distribution of different ore types that the strike of the F2 fault presents significant transition from NNE- to NE-trending in vertical. The ore-bearing disseminated host rocks, with widespread silicification and pyritisation, distribute in the lower inner contact zone of the granite intrusion, especially in the lower wavelike boundary of granite intrusion.CITATION:Xiong, L, Wei, J H and Shi, W J, 2015. Increasing growth in the minerals industry over the past decade has raised the question of whether the standard of training for new geologists has been negatively impacted. This hypothesis was tested by means of a survey. Factors considered included the quality of training and whether it has changed over the past 50 years, preferred styles of training compared to styles of training received and whether the quality of training provided by a company changed with the type or size of company. Data from 435 survey respondents showed a consistent standard of training, but a significant increase in the level of responsibility allocated to new geologists. Those with increased responsibility also had reduced access to additional support and were often asked to perform tasks for which they had little or no training. New geologists were more likely to receive better quality training in a large company (over 100 employees) that owned the mine or exploration lease. A more structured training program was more likely to provide a higher quality result than those with minimal or no structure.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

The minerals industry has enormous potential to positively contribute to sustainable development and many leading companies have concluded that their long-term success is directly linked to their ability to leave a lasting positive legacy. While there are many examples of success, there have been failures as well and much work has been done in recent years to define the role of the minerals industry in sustainable development and identify the key elements for success. In the past, our sector could point to the taxes and royalties it paid, the exports it generated and employment it created and felt confident that its contribution would be recognised and duly acknowledged. This is no longer the case. Critics of the industry have highlighted resource-rich countries that have failed to capitalise on their resource wealth and have arguably lower standards of living than their resource-poor peers û the æresource curseÆ hypothesis. Recent research has done much to clarify the factors that contribute to a countryÆs success or failure and all stakeholders in the industry now need to include these learnings in their approaches going forward. We know that our long-term success relies on embedding a company- wide approach to sustainable development into all aspects of our business operations. In this paper we highlight BHP BillitonÆs experience in the development and implementation of policies and systems designed to enhance our contribution to sustainable development. We detail the business drivers for excellence in this area and the key external codes and initiatives that have shaped our approach. The values-based BHP Billiton Charter, Sustainable Development Policy and associated Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management Standards are central to our approach. Implementation is reviewed through our HSEC audit program. One area in which we have placed particular emphasis is our approach to community development. BHP Billiton has a corporate target to contribute one per cent of its pre-tax profit on a three year rolling average to voluntary community programs. As our profit stream has increased with the minerals boom this is approaching an A$100 million commitment. In our paper we detail how we are working to ensure we maximise the value of this contribution for our communities and our shareholders.

Chalcopyrite samples from two different localities were leached in oxygenated mixed chloride-sulphate lixivants at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of chalcopyrite was found to follow predominantly linear kinetics. The slope of the major region was dependent on stirring rate, oxygen flowrate and chloride concentration while only slightly dependent on the surface area of the sample leached. This region was found to predominate only at low temperatures. The oxidised chalcopyrite releases cuprous and ferric ions into solutions. Chloride ions complex these dissolved ions to effectively move the equilibrium of the leaching reaction to the right. When the level of chloride in solution was below 6 g/l, the unstable cuprous ions were found to reprecipitate with sulphur as covellite. When no chloride was present and the lixivant was a solution of sulphuric acid then ferric sulphates precipitated. The overall leaching reaction occurring in the leaching system is: CuFeS2 + 5H+ + 1.25 02 = Cu 2+ + Fe 3+ + 2S¦ + 2.5H20

The South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, is situated at Broken Hill, NSW, Australia, towards the southern end of the main lode. The leases (MLs 7 and 8) cover a length of 2400 feet along the lode outcrop and the workings extend, at this date, to a depth of 1940 feet below the collar of the original main shaft and to 825 feet below sea level. Mining operations have been continuous for about 58 years and during this period nearly 12.5 million tons of ore have been mined. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30 000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet. A typical assay for a monthly period is 14.4 per cent Ph, 5.6 ozs Ag, and 11.6 per cent Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

The paper presents a review of research in the area of explosible coal dust with respect to safety in the underground mining environment. Research over the last several decades has concentrated on generating dust clouds in small scale laboratory explosion chambers to study flammability limits and the physical and chemical variables which affect explosion propensity. The validity of this approach is discussed and the results obtained for a range of coal types compared.

The term æindustrial mineralsÆ covers a wide range of minerals, from diamonds to silica sand, which are fundamental to the sustainability of a wide range of industries, from drilling mud to autocatalysts. The paper commences with an overview of the industrial minerals markets, with particular reference to the characteristics that impact on the development of a successful marketing strategy. This is followed by the identification of the steps to be taken in the negotiation and execution of an industrial minerals sales contract, from identification of the appropriate product through negotiation of the contract to ongoing customer relations. An understanding of your customerÆs business is fundamental to a mutually successful long-term relationship with that customer. The paper concludes with an overview of the techniques and approaches through which such a relationship may be achieved and maintained.

In the last 100 years, statistical sampling theory for particulate materials has developed to a stage where sampling systems can be confidently designed to provide assay results of known and controlled variance for a chosen time period. The two independent sources of sampling variance, namely intrinsic and distributional heterogeneity are defined and explained quantitatively. Intrinsic heterogeneity is characterised by the sampling constant for the material and distributional heterogeneity is quantified by the process steam variogram or covariance function. The means by which sampling systems can be designed to an accuracy specification is described.

Within a short time frame of just over two years Wirralie Gold Mine has been developed from a virgin geological discovery to an operating gold mine with a mine life of six years and a production rate of 50,000 oz per annum. Construction work on the 600,000 tpa single stage crushing, two stage milling CIP plant commenced in November 1987 and was completed some seven months later at an overall cost of $A25 million. Since commissioning in May 1988 the treatment plant has exceeded design tonnage, availability and recovery. A second expansion programme in January 1989 will increase plant capacity to one million tonnes per annum with associated bullion production of 80,000 ozs per annum.

The new generation Hlsmelt« Direct Iron Ore Smelting Process is a CRA Limited technology initiative. The process development is now focussed on commercialisation. The goal is to have the first commercial vessel operating around the year 2000. The HIsmelt« Process, based on the abundantly available iron ore fines and the more readily available non-coking coals, has the potential to fundamentally change iron ore processing through the application of high intensity techniques to replace the current sinter/coke ovens/blast furnace .technologies. The process will have great potential in the rapidly growing economies of Asia where steelmaking aspirations are based around local market focussed plants. This potential can be. realised as a supplier of premium grade iron units to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking plants or as the front end to an ore based steel mill.

Selective leach analytical techniques applied to surface geochemical samples in the search for deeply buried mineral resources gained popularity in the late 1990s. Several commercial assay laboratories introduced their own selective leach methods, adding to the few established commercial methods at that time. Many of these laboratories promoted their methods with orientation data showing favorable responses to both precious and base metal mineralisation, concealed beneath extensive thicknesses of overburden. However, many explorationists remain confused about the utility of these geochemical methods. This confusion is due primarily to the lack of objective orientation surveys over significant mineralisation, comparing all commercially available selective leach methods and to the lack of a creditable theory explaining the formation of these selective leach anomalies. An orientation survey was designed to fill the first void û an objective survey over significant mineralisation. With the help of 17 mining companies and assay laboratories, an orientation survey was conducted over five significant covered gold deposits in Nevada, USA , representing over ten million ounces of gold. Hopefully the results of this survey will help provide fuel for those working on the second void û a theory to adequately explain the formation of these selective leach anomalies.

Consulting Engineers have been used in the mining and metallurgical industries for many years. The traditional role of the consultant overseas has been one of assisting with conceptual design right through to con- struction and commissioning as well as on occasion acting solely in specialist fields. This role developed because mining companies wished to concentrate on building up the permanent organisation they require to operate their mines and treatment plants without the traumas of increasing staff for the design and construction period and reducing it on completion. In Australia where there have been few individual minerals projects of magnitude (until recently) companies have looked after their own detailed engineering and construct- ion management employing consultants mainly in specialised fields.

The alternate mineral dressing tech-niques for the production of ilmenite roaster feed from heavy mineral concentrate and the reasons for the selection of wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) at Richards Bay Minerals are outlined.Initial flowsheet studies were under-taken using laboratory scale equipment followed by on site pilot testing. Flowsheet development culminated with an extensive test programme conducted at Readings of Lismore in 1975.

The Joint' Venture Method is a procedure for assessing the value of exploration properties, particularly those for which resources have yet to be delineated. It aims to convert the terms of an actual or synthetic joint venture into the equivalence of an arms- lengths cash transaction between a willing seller and a willing buyer. This paper sets out one approach to achieving that conversion. It discusses both simple and complex cases and gives some examples from both public and private documents. It also includes some case studies in which the Joint Venture Method of valuation can be compared with values derived for the same project using other methodologies including actual cash deals. The Method has failings in both mathematics and logic. However because it does reflect or simulate an arms-length deal which takes into account past exploration effort and expenditure and an assessment of prospectivity at a particular point in time, it is felt that it can provide a reasonable approximation of trade value or asset value of a prospect, particularly if used in conjunction with other methods.
