The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management.

The Sishen iron-ore-mine produces 3 pro= ducts with size gradings of 25 to 8 mm, 11 to 5 mm and 5 to 0,2 mm and has a product capacity of 20 Mtpa. Ore is produced at an average Fe content of 66,2 % Fe for the two coarser pro= ducts and an average of 65,3 % Fe for the fine ore product. Three stage crushing is practised to re= duce the run-of-mine ore to -90 mm after which it is screened into five different size frac= tions of which four are heavy media beneficiated in static baths and cyclones and the fifth frac= tion discarded to slimes dams. A final three stage crushing and screening process is employed to produce the final three Products which are homogenized by means of blen=ding systems nrinr to despatch.

Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several seismically active mines as part of its Kalgoorlie Operations. In order to successfully continue mining at depth in increasing stress conditions, strategies need to be developed to reduce, control and manage the impact of seismicity causing damage to the rock mass. Consequently, a research partnership was developed with the WA School of Mines (WASM) through Mining3. The main aim of the project was to develop appropriate ground support standards that could withstand the expected dynamic response with minimal to no rehabilitation required for the life of that excavation. The project utilised a design methodology for determining the required energy demand based on detailed geotechnical mapping, probabilistic analysis of wedge formation and an estimate of rock ejection velocity based on uniaxial compressive strength of the intact rock (Villaescusa et al. 2016). The ground support scheme consists of high tensile chain link mesh, resin encapsulated de-coupled posimix bolts and plain strand cable bolts, in one, or multiple passes together with plain shotcrete. Implementation of the design posed several challenges including how to install the chain link mesh, maintaining the required productivity, ensuring quality control, and understanding the interaction of the several ground support components within the scheme. The implementation of the system within a trial area was successful from development mining to open stope extraction. The most significant field verification of the system occurred with near field M+1.9 seismic occurring in proximity to an operating long-hole drill. Despite large displacements exceeding 0.5m in places, there was no significant ejection of rock or failure of the ground support system. Following the successful trial, the ground support design methodology and standards have been implemented across several NSR sites. The system forms the basis for the successful extraction of resources in future high seismic risk areas.

Concern for the environment by the public and by mining companies, has led to many recent attempts to revegetate areas disturbed by mining activities. The problem of successfully revegetating disturbed areas and mine wastes is often difficult, even under favourable conditions. Under the severe conditions that prevail in and and semi-arid parts of Australia, such difficulties may be extreme. An approach is described in which field trials are used to investigate factors which adversely affect revegetation and to evaluate optimum methods and treatments..A wide range of methods suitable for use in and situations is described. These include grading and cultivating operations, topdressing with natural soil materials, selection of suitable plant species, mulching and the use of fertilisers and supplementary irrigation. It is concluded that such a programme provides the best approach to this complex and expensive problem.

Up to 80 per cent of the copper in a bornite ore can be quickly leached with percolating acidified ferric sulphate solutions. The upper limit for rapid copper extraction is set by the conversion of bornite to slowly dissolving chalcopyrite. The dissolution occurs in two stages: a rapid linear initial stage, followed by a slow, non-linear stage. The initial step is largely controlled by the rate of oxidant supply (Fe2(S04)3); temperature is not an important variable during the initial reaction. The second leaching stage is controlled by chemical and physical factors and is temperature dependent. The initial copper leaching rates are insensitive to both the concentration of the ferrous sulphate reaction product, and the sulphuric acid concentration.

In order to fully understand why Amax Coal puts such extreme emphasis on the drilling and blasting programs at each of our mines, we must review the past. This paper will discuss the drilling and blasting techniques we used in the 1970s and their evolution to current practices. As time progressed, major changes influenced the surface mining of coal through new more restrictive governmental controls and local communities organising into groups with two goals in mind, one to shut down the mines and the second to try and get rich by making false and unjust damage suits against the mines. In virtually all of our midwest surface operations we have at one time or presently are facing litigation that has reached into the millions of dollars. Amax Coal has worked in co-operation with the United States Bureau of Mines in the areas of blast vibration, shot design, highwall safety, blast casting studies and many more. Today we are continuing to work with Dr David Siskind and his expert staff seeking answers to old and new problems addressing the blasting of overburden and parting seams.

An exploratory study has been carried out on the applicability of pre-nucleated feed in pelletising operations. Measurements of the pellet quality parameters showed that iron ore pellets prepared in the above manner, generally meet the specifications required in international pellet traffic. Several potential economic advantages, such as reduced grinding power requirements, increased line productivity and shorter start-up periods, became apparent during the study.

Kaolin used as an industrial mineral, especially that in the paper-manufacturing industry, must be of fine size, with high brightness, a low impurity content, and good crystal shape. However, in most kaolin deposits there are various impurities which have a very bad effect on the quality of the kaolin. Therefore, it is necessary to remove these impurities from kaolin ore. Owing to their similar surface properties, the separation of kaolin and iron oxide minerals, especially microkaolin and iron oxide minerals, has been regarded as difficult. The iron oxide minerals often intergrow with kaolin in fine and complicated forms, such as thin films, which make separation difficult. In order to overcome this difficulty, many workers have suggested various treatment methods and obtained great success. Based on research work by Fuerstenau (1980), Huang, Li and Hu (1984), Hui and Wei (1991), Shergold (1978), and Zambrana et al (1974), we have investigated a two-liquid flotation technique for iron removal from kaolin and obtained some success.

Dugald River Mine (DRM) is located approximately 85 km north-east of Mount Isa, and 65 km northwest of Cloncurry, in the north-west Queensland Minerals Province of Australia. DRM is an underground operation and includes an above ground processing area, a 200 ha tailings facility, two waste rock dumps and associated infrastructure. The mining method is conventional underground longhole open stoping and downhole benching of a lead/zinc deposit within a black slate environment. The deposit is estimated to contain ~53 Mt of zinc and lead, which will be mined over a 30-year period. During operations, waste rock is segregated into either Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) or Non-Acid Forming (NAF) based primarily on the sulfide concentration of the rock. In particular, the NAF waste rock is an asset and is used for various small construction projects during operation; however, its primary use is for rehabilitation work at closure. Since beginning operations in 2017, DRM has generated more NAF than was originally anticipated. Whilst this is an excellent asset to DRM, it did pose a logistical problem of where to store the additional NAF for the life-of-mine and how to manage the run-off. DRM experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot conditions and periods of rainfall between November to April, and relatively dry and mild conditions between May to October. Majority of rainfall is received between January and February with an annual average rainfall of 501.1 mm. Short and intense rainfall events are common. DRM’s above ground infrastructure is land-locked between two large ephemeral watercourses, making the significant expansion of any assets challenging from a permitting/regulation and cost perspective. MMG is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and is committed to adapting to a changing climate through operations and closure. Following extensive studies DRM opted to store the additional NAF material into the adjoining NAF Dam and concurrently upgrade a previously minor sediment basin into a highly engineered sediment basin which relies on automatic flocculant dosing to meet the required discharge quality limits. This basin is climate-resilient in that the dosing system can be adjusted to counter high intensity extended rainfall events which produce highly variable inflow water quality. This abstract broadly describes how DRM designed and implemented an engineering innovation to enable the site to meet the changing climatic challenges. The abstract then describes the process to design the sediment basin and how the dosing rate was established and validated. Finally, the abstract comments on the effectiveness of the sediment basin and how it has revolutionised DRM’s approach to water treatment and management; all whilst minimising the disturbance footprint of the operation

In the present work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of structural mortar from glass insulators were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, microhardness and compression testings. The investigated glass insulators were manufactured between the 1960 and 1990 years and had been used in 230 kV transmission lines. The results evidenced that the structural mortar of glass insulator was replaced from Portland to aluminous cement along the years. The crystalline phases of the mortar were identified and mechanical properties were correlated.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. The Ardlethan tin concentrator had dete riorated considerably in metallurgical per- formance, maintenance and plant availability. This problem was compounded by low tin prices and International Tin Council quotas. Mid- 1976 figures were: throughput - 1300 tonnes per day, availability 83% and metal recovery 537. Major problems existed throughout the circuit from crushing to tailings disposal and with morale, staffing, and housekeeping. With the lifting of the quotas in June 1976, management provided funds to implement a major rehabilitation programme and some fifteen major projects, at a cost of about $1.3 million have been completed to date. The change in performance has been dram- atic, and end of 1977 performance figures are: throughput - 1700 tonnes per day, availability 90% and metal recovery 65%.

As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

King Island Scheelite had been using dealer modified front end loaders for two years when in 1974 it started to increase production. Suppliers were then quoting long deliveries for underground diesel trackless mining equip- ment, and the Company was forced to modify surface machines which had become redundant as production from the open cut phased out. The results were generally successful and encouraged further adaptations. Drill jumbos excepted, the Company now uses only converted surface machines in areas worked by diesel engined equipment and for all support and auxiliary functions.

Carbonatites - igneous carbonate-silicate rocks - host the world's major resources for niobium, phosphorous and REE (rare earth elements).Carbonatites represent the least common products of mantle and igneous processes and their emplacement is principally controlled by lithospheric domes and rift structures. Intrusive carbonatites frequently comprise carbonate-amphibole-apatite-pyrocWore assemblages, occur as plugs, cores, dykes, sills sheets, veins, pipes and irregular bodies, are gecichemically anomalous (Ba, Ca, Cl, F, Hf, Mg, Nb, P, REE, S, Sc, SO4, Sri Tb, Ti, D, V, Zr), are associated with alkaline silica-undersaturated igneous rocks forming carbonatite complexes, and display large, intensive alteration haloes. Also carbonatites are similar to limestones, prone to weathering, and may form thick laterite profiles.Magmatic ores (pyrocWore, apatite, bastnaesite, monazite, magnetite, baddeleyite, phlogopite, fluorite, calcite) and weathering related residual and supergene ores (pyrochlore, apatite, magnetite, anatase, vermiculite) are currently being mined on all continents except Australia. Australia is underexplored for carbonatite associated primary magmatic and especially residual-supergene ore deposits. Chances are very high for the finding of new carbonatite, occurrences and associated ores.

Coal loss is an important issue at many coalmines, with losses of five per cent being common. The type of loss varies from mine to mine but is dependent on mine strata, the drilling and blasting processes applied and the mining method used. Typical coal loss mechanisms from the drill and blast process are coal roof damage and edge loss. Usually a reduction in coal loss is in direct competition with the need to provide material that is well-fragmented and a muck pile that has the required cast percentage. These competing issues were addressed over a two-year period at a mine in the New South Wales Coalfields by implementing a five-step approach. This was centred around building an understanding of the coal loss mechanisms utilising proprietary heave- modelling software, measuring coal losses by comparing survey to drill and/or gamma logs and implementing appropriate coal loss reduction processes. The end result exceeded expectations with a 95 per cent reduction in coal loss. Mine excavation productivity was maintained and coal loss minimised to less than one per cent of the in situ coal block.CITATION:Nagarajan, M, Green, A, Brown, P and Dare-Bryan, P, 2015. Treating an ore blend from five different deposits at Newgold’s Peak Gold Mine (PGM) has always been a challenge due to the inherent variability between each of the orebodies.Operating the processing plant at PGM with a ‘normal’ level of process control and a good operations and metallurgical team has allowed the processing plant to achieve above the name plate design at 102 t/h and recoveries in the order of 92.8 per cent for gold and 88.4 per cent for copper.With a company value and culture of striving for continuous improvement, PGM implemented the Manta Cube® system, an advanced process control system, for the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, gold leach circuit and tailings thickener over a 12-month period throughout 2012 and 2013.The overall benefits of implementing the Manta Cube® system has led to an increase in mill throughput of at least two per cent, improved SAG mill liner life, a ten per cent decrease in cyanide consumption and a reduction in flocculant of at least 30 per cent with no detriment to the gold and copper recoveries.The entire project had a payback period of less than two months, and the combined benefits resulted in an overall increase in revenue of at least $5 million per annum. Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the mining and processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. The audits described in this paper involve working with site personnel to develop and implement major improvement projects, providing advice on how to improve environmental practices and facilities, and disseminating innovative ideas and practices across the site and to other operations within the same group. Essentially the lead auditor assumes the role of a æskills coachÆ as opposed to a æpolicemanÆ, which is quite often the case for many audits. The audit process has been developed from involvement with a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years and more recently, with a metalliferous mine in the Northern Territory. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided. The auditing process as described is applicable to metalliferous mines, the processing of mineral ores, coal mines, coal handling and preparation plants, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

The Effluent Treatment System at Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) was commissioned in December, 1991 and has operated satisfactorily, ensuring that aqueous discharges from PMEZ comply with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Act. The system treats both spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant, and acidic liquor generated in the gas cleaning section of the Sulphuric Acid Plant. The spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant are collected in a large catchment pond. The pond liquor, after partial neutralisation with sodium hydroxide to pH 4, and removal of suspended solids, is preferentially recycled to the Zinc Plant, for example, for washing of residues. Liquor which cannot be recycled, is treated in the Lime Neutralisation Section. The other input to the Lime Neutralisation Section is the acidic liquor from the Sulphuric Acid Plant from which mercury has been removed by contact with aluminium pellets in a fluidised column. In the Lime Neutralisation Section, the liquors are blended and neutralised to pH 10 by the addition of slaked lime. The heavy metals and most of the fluorine are precipitated. The precipitated solids are removed in a thickener with part of the thickener underflow being filtered. Most of the thickener underflow is recycled to generate solids that settle rapidly and filter well. The filter cake is returned to the Zinc Plant for the recovery of contained heavy metals while the thickener overflow is discharged to the Derwent River.

In Mount Isa voltage and frequency fluctuations caused. by haulage shaft operation gave considerable difficulties with the initial application of Atomic Absorption Spectro-photometry.The methods used to stabilise the various units ' have been described.- Some other difficulties and the means used to eliminate or reduce them together with a-modified burner design are also discussed.
