The mining industry has aggressively sought competitiveness through increased productivity and return on investment. A primary strategy has been the pursuit of economies of scale. This has also been dependent upon the implementation of new technology and systems integration. System integration has been accomplished through the implementation of mine dispatch, global positioning and mine wide communication technologies. These technologies have tended to advance at different rates of development and implementation. The result has been that across the industry, and even within companies, mines are at various stages of operational system re-engineering in these areas, driven by improvements in productivity and operational efficiency. Although this strategy has been successful, little effort has been made to analyse change in operational performance in order to understand and model the effects of scale in a quantitative manner. This paper considers the particular impact of equipment scale, together with potential future trends. It then presents and demonstrates a preliminary method to quantify through simulation the anticipated benefits of economies of scale.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid- Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution of Australia.

A combination of new radiometric age dates, local field relationships and the regional tectonic history indicate that the low sulphidation, fault breccia-hosted, epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna is related to continental rifting processes rather than subduction induced deformation and magmatism. K-Ar and Ar-Ar age dating of secondary sericite associated with the gold-silver mineralisation indicates that the alteration crystallised between 4.0 and 3.2 Ma, whereas relative age relationships and SHRIMP II U-Pb dating of the abundant Boiou porphyry intrusions on Misima confirm that the calc-alkaline plutonism is significantly older (8.1 f 0.4 Ma) and related to a different tectonothermal event. The Woodlark Basin sea floor spreading centre occurs to the north of Misima and has continued to propagate westwards, into the continental basement of the Papuan Peninsular, since the end of the Miocene. The westernmost tip of sea floor spreading centre is presently to the east of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands but would have been to the east of Misima roughly 4 Ma. Many of the young tectonothermal features in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (hydrothermal activity and associated epithermal mineralisation, metamorphic core complex exhumation, detachment faulting, peralkaline volcanism, half graben type basin formation) can be attributed to major extensional deformation ahead of the propagating rift system. Similar tectonothermal features on Misima are temporally associated with the epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna, suggesting that the D'Entrecasteaux Islands are a modern day tectonic analogue for Misima at the time of precious metal mobility and deposition. A new type of rockbolting system, the self drilling rockbolt, has been studied to develop a 'single pass' bolt for use in rockbolt installation in underground engineering. This single pass bolt forms the basis of a Rapid Face Bolting system which will reduce the amount of time spent in securing a roof during the operation of a continuous miner in the development of a panel.The installation efficiency and anchorage tests were performed in the laboratory on the self drilling bolt and the traditional resin anchorage. bolt. Conventional polygonal and block modelling techniques inadequately represent the grade-thickness distribution of some narrow shear and stratabound gold deposits. The polygonal influence of high-grade drill intercepts can result in overestimates of resource tonnages at high-grade cut-offs. Although block modelling methods provide grade smoothing and a better representation of structural continuity, the technique can lack precise definition of ore width. An alternative method known as Spatial Object Modelling (SOM) has been developed on MineMap software to overcome some of these modelling issues. This method does not rely on a uniform cell size and allows grade smoothing between resource intercepts in three-dimensional space. The SOM technique creates grade-thickness bars on regular, user-defined spacings which allow easy visual comparison of raw intercept data to the interpolated model. Model cell values are readily transformed into isopachs, isopleths and resource perimeters for reporting and mine planning purposes.

Recent advances in computer simulation together with field measurements of caving and microseismic activity about longwall panels, has allowed a much better understanding of the caving process and the variability due to geology. The joint research between SCT Operations and CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining has initiated new methods of computational modelling predicting various caving patterns and strata failure far ahead of the longwall face. This work was validated by field measurements of caving and microseismic activity at the longwall face.The rock fracture distribution and the caving characteristics of a range of strata sections have been simulated by computer methods. Validation studies of the method were addressed together with case studies. The interaction of caving with support convergence and face control is presented. The method allows the simulation of longwall support behaviour under various geological conditions. The system also allows a prediction of the monitoring data, which is best suited to give an early warning of weighting events or signal various key caving characteristics.

As a result of commissioning No.5 B F, 2670m3 inner volume, in March 1972, the largest B F in Australia; new expertise in maintenance, furnace operating practices and design have been obtained. This experience has also been extended to the other furnaces. A series of operating problems were con- fronted; all parts of the furnace, including the hearth side walls and bottom,were adversely affected. In December 1977, serious hearth wall wear was detected at No.5 B F, and a potential hearth breakout was averted. Hearth wear in No.4 B F was discovered in March 1979, and emer- gency underhearth cooling was installed to reverse an extremely advanced hearth bottom erosion. Hearth behaviour of No.5 B F oampaign 1972-1978 and`No.4 B F campaign commencing 1972, has been studied and discussions on the causes, effects and measures undertaken to protect the hearths are presented in this paper.

Western Australian tin deposits are similar to those of other Precam- brian terrains in that they are mainly associated with rare-metal pegmatites, in which cassiterite is found with minerals containing any or all of the elements Ta, Nb, Be, Li, Cs, Rb and the rare earths.. They differ from Phanerozoic deposits where cassiterite occurs in quartz veins, greisens, dis- seminations in granite or sulphide lodes, and is associated with minerals containing W, Mo, Bi, Sb, As, Ag, or Cu. The main tin production in Western Australia has come from the Pilbara Block where the more important tin- bearing pegmatites are related to a younger granite phase, and from Green- bushes where large albite pegmatites intrude ?Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The more important tin deposits in the Pilbara Block, and those in the Halls Creek and Murchison Provinces, are related to granites which are richer in Si and K and poorer in Ca, Mg, Fe and Ti than 'average granite'. The tin granites tend to have higher than average contents of Sn, Rb and Li.

Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.

This paper outlines the manner in which legislative control for tunnelling and allied operations has evolved, detailing Victorian experience. It examines the concept of mine managers as it relates to the industry and attemps to illustrate its benefits. The Victorian experience in relation to fatal and serious accidents is examined in detail, particularly in the allied art of trenching and examines the Krings system of trench lining support which is hoped will catalyse an increase of engineering expertise in this area. The paper concludes by demonstrating that safety awareness is not incompatible with production efficiency or economic viability.

There has been a substantial transition in the minerals industry R&D environment in the last five to ten years. Changes have occurred in the client and contractor base, the sources and scale of funding, industry imperatives, and competition and collaboration between contractors. These changes are documented from the viewpoint of research contractors in general, and universities and the JKMRC in particular.It is concluded that research groups need to be more proactive in managing their interface with the industry. Both industry and the research community m\lst devote the resources and attention necessary to ensure the effective transfer of research results into operations. The Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) has an important role in these processes, and in regulating the balance between contractor collaboration and competition.

Low-grade manganese ore from Sandur, India containing 28.2 per cent manganese and 20.9 per cent iron was roasted with sulphating agents, viz ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid. The effects of temperature of roasting (300 - 800°C), time (15 - 120 minutes) and amount of sulphating agent (0.5 to 2.5 times stoichiometric amount) were studied. Under optimum conditions, it was possible to extract 92 per cent manganese with 0.5 per cent iron at a temperature of 700°C for 90 minutes duration with stoichiometric ammonium sulphate. Further increase in quantity of ammonium sulphate has marginal effect on manganese extraction.Similar studies were carried out with sulphuric acid, and an extraction of about 87 per cent manganese with similar iron contamination was achieved at a temperature of 700°C for 60 minutes duration with stoichiometric quantity of the reagent. Selective extraction of manganese with respect to iron is discussed.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. A relationship is predicted between oxidic nickel in slag, oxygen in matte and Ni/Fe ratio in matte after the examination of thirty sets of contiguous matte and slag samples taken from industrial nickel smelters. Oxidic nickel in slag is found to increase with increase in oxygen content of matte of constant Ni/Fe ratio, and it is proposed that the relationship may be used to predict nickel solubility in slag from a knowledge of matte composition alone.

A metallurgical evaluation of the Argyle Kimberlite No. 1 (AKl) orebody has been carried out using a 40 tonnes per hour pilot plant. Pilot plant results, together with laboratory investigations provided a basis for the determination of process design criteria for a major treatment plant. Various sampling programmes were carried out to determine specific aspects in the evaluation of diamond liberation. Treatment parameters such as the top crush size, recrush size and the bottom cut-off size were investigated. The northern edge of the Mesozoic Surat Basin overlaps the southern extension of the Bowen Basin, a 'major structure that warped do*nWard in varying degrees from Permian time into Early'Triassic time: The axis of the Bowen Basin may be superimposed on the axis'of a still older structure, the Tasman Geosyncline, that probably originated in Ordovician time culminating in Late Carboniferous time.Within. or bordering the area the geologic record 'clearly marks.major differences in the stratigraphy and structure related, to"the successive evolution of these three distinct structural units. Gipronickel Institute JS that is a Research and Development Centre affiliated to the worldclass Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company, and Outokumpu Technologies AB (Boliden Contech AB) have jointly developed the reconstruction project of Pechenganickel metallurgical operations using a two-zone Vanyukov furnace. The international expert group appointed by the Nordic Investment Bank has examined the project. The project financing should be partly executed by the Norway government. Current annual rate of sulfur dioxide emissions is 100 000 t. The aim of the project is to reduce it to 12 000 tpy. Pechenganickel Combine is owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel. Currently it produces nickel high-grade matte from sulfide copper-nickel concentrate with up to ten per cent MgO content. The existing production is in accordance with the following flow sheet: agglomeration û electric furnace smelting with matte production û converting in horizontal converters. Annual production capacity is about 36 000 t of nickel in high-grade matte. Converter gases report to sulfuric acid production. The principal results of studies on high magnesia materials smelting in two-zone Vanyukov furnace, engineering solutions, and technical and economical parameters are offered.

The following is based on two examples of emission control with coal fired power stations as practised in Germany at Heilbronn Block 7 power station and the Rheinbraun coal combined power station with integrated high-temperature Winkler system (HTW). Heilbronn Block 7 demonstrates the successful emission control of sulphur and nitrogen oxides and the (HTW) system the reduction of the specific carbon dioxide emission. Both were sparked off by legislation which demanded certain emission control standards. Since the early eighties environment protection has been a matter of heated public debate in the European Community. A recent survey in Germany showed unemployment as being the only subject matter more frequently in the minds of people than environment protection. A new kind of forest devastation in areas away from industry has caused investigations by several government departments and private enterprise. Because of lack of conclusive evidence so far, the principle of PRECAUTION has replaced the CONCLUSIVE evidence as a base for new legislation concerning the environment. The new legislative standards for nitrogen oxide emissions in Germany for example have reduced NOx emissions of power stations from 1000 mg NOx per cubic metre of flue gas in the beginning of 1983 to 200 mg NOx per cubic metre of flue gas in April 1984. These new standards were enshrined in legislation when research provided some evidence linking nitrogen oxide emissions through photo-chemical reactions with forest devastation. Thirty European countries signed a treaty in 1983 expressing their concern about air pollution and their willingness to co-operate with each other in controlling large scale emissions.

Problems associated with gas management become more significant as exploitation of coal reserves in the Bowen Basin in Australia becomes deeper. At Oaky North mine, relocation of production from one area of the mine to another with a higher gas content required the use of pre-drainage, post drainage and inertisation techniques to enable production activities to continue largely uninterrupted. Innovative surface to inseam drilling techniques were developed for pre-drainage of reserves close to mine workings and have proven to be largely successful. The gas management techniques adopted and specific experience gained are discussed in this paper.
