Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher's test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".

Narrowly sized samples of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) were leached in oxygenated acidic sulphate-chloride solutions. Chalcocite leaches via a two-stage process, the first stage being much more rapid than the second. The apparent activation energies are 42.7 kJ/mol and 68.2 kJ/mol respectively, indicating that both stages are controlled by surface chemical reactions. The leaching of covellite is also chemically rate limited with an apparent activation energy of 77.0 kJ/mol. The shrinking core model is able to be used to describe the leaching processes of both copper sulphides. Over 97% of copper present in chalcocite dissolved in 0.5 M H2SO4i0.5 M NaCl solution under one atmosphere pressure of oxygen at 85¦C in three hours from particles 36 pm in diameter while only 85% of the contained copper in covellite particles 13 pm in diameter dissolved in the same solution under the same pressure at 90¦C in six hours. About 99% of the sulphide sulphur in chalcocite was oxidised to elemental sulphur while only 90% of sulphide sulphur was converted to elemental sulphur during covellite leaching. The mechanism proposed for the two-stage leaching of chalcocite particles is as follows: in the first stage, cuprous ions rapidly diffuse to the external reaction surface where they lose electrons and go into solution as a complex cupric chloride ion CuCl'. The second leaching stage begins when covellite is formed at the external surface. Copper again goes into solution as the CuCl* ion. The mechanism for leaching synthetic covellite is similar to the second leaching stage for chalcocite except that the leaching rate of synthetic covellite is substantially lower than that of the newly formed 'covellite'. Elemental sulphur formed on the particle surface retards the dissolution processes during both chalcocite and covellite leaching. The presence of chloride ions is necessary if essentially all of the copper from chalcocite is to go into solution. When no chloride ions were present, the leaching rate of both newly formed and synthetic covellite was almost zero. The main role of chloride ions in both chalcocite and covellite leaching appears to be to disrupt the passivation film of sulphur on the particle surface.

Methane is present in varying degrees in nearly all underground coal mining operations. At mixtures with air near 5-15% it is explosive and consequently since it is not usual for these levels of contamination to be reached in the general body of a mine ventilation system it is not unusual to experience it in specific places. On longwall faces the most used power loader is the shearer machine and because of its general shape, situation and operation it is likely that all the factors which are required to cause a frictional ignition can be present. This paper makes a general appreciation of the causes of these ignitions and methods which are and have been used to control these situations on and around these machines.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

Attempt has been made to determine the nature of charge on activated carbon surface by studying the electro-kinetic properties of the carbon in the presence of cations, anions and aurocyanide solutions. The zeta-potential measurements were made in the presence of individual ions and also in combinations. The cations and anions chosen were those commonly associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area. It was found that the iso-electric point of Norit Carbon was at pH 4.45; below this pH the charge was positive, while above, it was negative. In the absence of gold cyanide solutions and in the presence of individual cations the i.e.p. shifted to the alkaline range (pH 7.2-8.5) while in the presence of anions the i.e.p. was shifted to less than pH 3.5. In the presence of aurocyanide solutions, the iso-electric point was still in the acid region irrespective of whether anions or cations were present. The probable mechanism for such a behaviour has been attempted after measuring the specific conductivities of solutions before and after gold adsorption, by studies using the electron- probe-mirco-analyser, and S.E.M. on the carbon surface.

Leaching studies were carried out on Indian Ocean manganese nodules using sulphuric acid as the lixiviant. By leaching the nodules with 8 per cent sulphuric acid for 12h at 100°C, copper and nickel could be completely extracted along with 50 per cent cobalt and 6.2 per cent manganese.94.2 per cent of the iron was also dissolved. To increase manganese and cobalt extraction, charcoal was used as a reductant. The role of charcoal was to reduce the manganese dioxide and render it soluble as manganese sulphate as well as to facilitate solution of the cobalt minerals associated with the manganese dioxide. Various leaching parameters were studied including acid concentration, amount of reductant, leach time, pulp density and leach temperature. It was found that by leaching the nodules with 10 per cent sulphuric acid at 100°C for 4h using 5 wt/wt per cent charcoal (0.05g of charcoal per g of nodule) almost complete extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese could be achieved. However, under these conditions all the iron present in the nodules was also leached.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980's :1) hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2) "Red Sea" type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3) ferromanganese nodules; 4) concentrations of metallic sulphides ("Black Smokers"); and 5) cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts. Since then, the so called "White Smokers", containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

Many flotation operations need to improve liberation to increase recovery, yet often plant operators are concerned that finer grinding will produce æslimesÆ with low flotation recovery. Yet simple circuits can be designed to give good liberation and excellent fines recovery. The economics of fine grinding has changed fundamentally with new stirred milling processes like the IsaMill. This has also transformed flotation design due to the clean surfaces produced in the inert grinding environment and the narrow size distribution produced by the IsaMill. Past poor experiences with æovergrindingÆ in flotation circuits was often due to the wide size distribution and the degradation of mineral surfaces produced by conventional devices using steel media, like ball mills and tower mills. The correct practice is to design both grinding and flotation together to suit the liberation characteristics of the ore. This may result in several stages of grinding and flotation, recovering mineral as soon as it is liberated, then applying further grinding energy only to those particles that still need liberation. Flotation then occurs in relatively narrow size bands and with minerals with similar liberation characteristics. Though the circuit may look more complex on paper, in reality it is far simpler to operate since each section performs predicably. Circuit design also needs to address materials handling. Finer particles affect froth handling and dewatering, but can still be easily handled by standard products with careful attention to design of launders, pumps and pumpboxes, and de-aeration before thickening and filtering. Excellent examples of designing circuits to include ultrafine grinding include Mt Isa and McArthur River (MRM). In the last decade these operations have produced over ten million tonnes of concentrate with an average grain size below 10 ¦m and above 80 per cent recovery. At Mt Isa, zinc recovery was increased by ten per cent by applying fine grinding to existing poorly liberated streams. In fact, grinding finer in the IsaMill actually improved the recovery of fine particles by ten per cent, and maximum particle flotation recovery occurs for 10 ¦m particles. A more recent example is the flotation of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The use of conventional ball or tower milling to improve liberation is severely limited by the impact of commonly associated chromite on classification, and degradation of flotation performance by the steel grinding environment. The ability of open circuit IsaMills to deliver a narrowly sized ultrafine product with clean mineral surfaces is transforming the design of platinum flotation circuits. The science and practice of fine-grained flotation is now thoroughly proven. The availability of the 2.6 MW IsaMill has made ultra fine grinding a practical tool for flotation plant design. It is expected to become a standard choice for future applications of both fine-grained ores and for minerals with difficult flotation characteristics.

This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

Arsenic is classified chemically as a metalloid. That is, it has properties intermediate between those of metals and non-metals. Like non-metals, it combines with many metals to form arsenides (eg arsenopyrite FeAsS, niccolite NiAs, sperrylite PtAs2), but like metals it forms sulphides and oxides (eg realgar AsS, arsenolite As203). Arsenic is distributed widely in the Earth's crust at an average concentration of 1.5 mg/kg and is present in more than 150 minerals.

A survey was undertaken on the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter in which samples of slag and matte were taken along the length of the integrated flash smelting furnace and analysed to determine the variation of nickel and iron concentration. At the same time the oxygen potential of the slag and matte was measured using disposable tip solid-state oxygen probes. The results show that the oxygen potential of the slag is higher than that of the matte and that both decrease from the reaction shaft end to the slag tap hole end of the furnace. The slag and matte are not at equilibrium except towards the tap hole end. Reduction of nickel and magnetite from the slag occurs before the slag enters the slag-cleaning appendage by reaction with iron in the matte. Thermodynamic modelling and laboratory experiments showed that the equilibrium nickel and magnetite contents of the slag in the absence of a carbonaceous reducing agent are about 0.4 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively. A carbonaceous reductant is required to obtain a lower nickel content in the slag.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised. An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). U-Pb dating by ion microprobe on magmatic zircons from the vicinity of the Goonumbla and Gidginbung deposits gives ages of 438 ¦ 3.5 Ma (2 6), and 435 ¦ 2.5 Ma (2 (7) respectimly, W a minimum age of 435 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of magmatic phases from volcanic rocks adjacent to the Browns Creek skarn deposit. Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.

Aqueous oxidation in an autoclave at ele- vated temperatures and oxygen partial pres- sures is applied to Philippine gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates which respond poorly to conventional cyanidation. The gold concentrates are recovered from ores and tail- ings material using the patented OMLI Process (the OMLI Process is able to upgrade tailings material analyzing 0.50 g/t Au to a concen- trate with a grade of 5 g/t Au or better). The results show that with aqueous pre- oxidation of the concentrates ahead of cyani- dation a four-fold increase in gold recovery is obtained compared with straight cyanida- tion. The observed differences in response to the pre-treatment step between various mate- rials are correlated with their mineralogical composition. The chemistry of aqueous oxida- tion is also presented.
