Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. Diamond bearing deposits are extremely low grade and require large bulk samples to be tested to determine the grade and quality of the stones. The semi portable plants, for treatment of these bulk samples, have followed the development of commercial processes for diamond concentration. These processes included jigs and diamond pans, which have been largely supplanted by heavy media processes for primary concentration, due to the higher efficiencies in all size ranges. A number'of flowsheets including these processes are presented. The final recovery of diamonds from the bulk sample concentrates can be accomplished by rejigging, adherance to grease or by X-ray sorting. Flowsheets incorporating all the processes are presented. Two plants are described; one incorporating jigging, rejigging and hand sorting; the other using heavy media separation, and wet X-ray sorting.

This paper briefly reviews the background of mobile primary crushers and their current main areas of application. The benefits of applying mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems are analysed. The impacts of applying such systems to different steps of the mine process are discussed, including mine development and planning. Application examples are used for demonstrating further possibilities to apply mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems in mining projects successfully.

Blasting techniques are widely used to fragment rock masses into smaller pieces. Numerical modelling is an efficient method employed by many researchers in the blasting field. It is difficult for a conventional continuum-based approach such as the finite element method (FEM) to model the rock fragmentation by blasting and the expansion work on the rock by explosive and its detonation products. In this paper, the particle blast method (PBM) was employed to model the behaviour of the detonation and a bonded particle model (BPM) was used to model the brittle material to be blasted. A mortar cylinder with a centrally placed hole for the explosive was modelled and the results were compared to the experimental data. An investigation was undertaken to devise a new method for reducing dust spread during blasting demolition utilising water tube and detonating cord. Modelling of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with AUTODYN software was initially completed to determine the expected diffusing behaviour of the water tube. The actual behaviour was then captured with high speed videos during each experiment, and each result analysed in detail. Water mist diffusion was generated and analysed by changing three key variables. Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970's emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

The United States Steel Mining Co., Inc. recently experienced a major mine fire at the Cumberland Mine. This mine is located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is mining a high volatile bituminous coal seam (Pittsburgh Seam). The mine fire was success- fully controlled and extinguished without loss of life or serious injury to any miner or mine rescue personnel and finally reopened within 40 days of its inception.

Current research at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomechanics, into the mode of response of fill as a structural component has been based on model tests for prediction of behaviour and field observation of critical parameters. The procedure is summarised in four stages: (a) define the specific fill function (b) postulate the mode of failure (c) use models to quantify the conditions (d) monitor critical parameters to check or update the analysis in (c). The above procedure is used to postulate the failure modes of each of the possible func- tions performed by fill materials. Analytical techniques, or lines of investigation, are described for each of these modes and specific reference is made, where, possible, to an exis- ting mine environment.

The use of stationary calciners in the processing of aluminium hydroxide has emphas- ized the importance of Bayer hydrate properties with respect to particle breakdown during calcination and subsequent treatment. Test results from calcination of several Bayer hydrates to sandy alumina in the FLS Gas Suspension Calciner (GSC) were obtained in a 250 kg/h pilot plant unit. Particle breakdown during calcination was influenced by content of solid sodium oxalate, trapped in the hydrate particles and operating gas velocities. Owing to the design and operational principles of the GSC it is possible to reduce particle breakdown to at least the same as what is found in long rotary kilns. Other major advantages reviewed are obtained through simplifications in plant design and operation, pointing to low specific power and heat consumption, and generally low production costs, thereby providing an attractive alternative to fluid-bed calciners.

This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

This paper discusses the major infrastructure elements required to support a typical Australian mining development. Infrastructure elements are grouped into four major types, urban planning, transportation, power and communications and water supply. The design criteria applying to individual elements within these groups are briefly discussed as well as order of magnitude cost estimates. The use of simulation models to test the capacity of existing rail networks, as well as novel sources of energy generation, are also described.

The development of simulation models to reflect accurately the operations of a port and its associated transportation systems can be an expensive and time consuming process. However the complexity of such operations leaves little choice for other than simulation techniques since analytical methods are rarely appropriate. The development of suitable software has now reached the stage that these techniques can be used with confidence. Types of simulation models and their requirements are discussed together with the results from some recent applications to the planning and management of bulk terminals.

On-belt analysers have been used since the early 1980s in the coal sector to measure ash content in real time for diverting material on conveyors to remove waste, bypass beneficiation and allow suitable material to proceed to the wash plant for processing. Since 2008, a GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser has been used on an overland conveyor in South Africa to divert direct-shipping quality iron ore to bypass a jig plant. This paper focusses on recent evaluation work to determine the suitability of an on-belt analyser to upgrade the processing plant feed in a copper-gold operation.Copper-gold ore samples from New Gold’s New Afton Mine near Kamloops, BC, Canada were tested to assess measurement accuracy over short time increments. A two-minute measurement increment has been used in the minerals sector as a compromise between good measurement accuracy and a useful tonnage (haul truck equivalent size or smaller). At New Afton, this increment represents approximately 35 t of material. Segregation decisions are currently made after visual and sometimes analytical determination, at increments of approximately 500 t to designate material as ore or waste at the drawbell in the cave.Results of test work including the composition range and expected accuracies by element are shown. The operation, which is not mine constrained, was evaluating the potential for ore upgrading through waste and low grade increment diversion to upgrade ore quality feeding the mill. Prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was considered as the company recognised that it would measure through the full conveyed cross section continuously and produce multi-elemental measurements unaffected by particle size, dust, moisture content, layering and segregation, mineralogy and belt speed.GEOSCAN analyses over various analysis periods will be collected to identify variability in the conveyed material quality and used to generate tonnage-grade curves so that an optimal diversion (bulk sorting) tonnage increment can be determined. Best practice for the submission of samples to an internal or commercial laboratory requires quality control materials to be included for the purpose of independently and comprehensively assessing laboratory performance. These quality controls include the use of certified reference materials (CRMs) and may be blind to the laboratory. Iron ore companies purchase these materials from reputable manufacturers from stock of run-of-mine materials at the appropriate grades. The international standard, ISO 17034 (ISO, 2016), specifies the competency requirements for organisations manufacturing reference materials, and includes rigorous requirements for the assessment of homogeneity, stability and establishment of property values and their uncertainties. Homogeneity is one of the most important measures of suitability for all certified reference materials and refers to the degree to which the composition and properties of a sample are uniform throughout the batch, relative to the analytical precision of the method. More specifically, homogeneity studies of candidate reference materials should be assessed for both within sample variance and between sample variance with appropriate statistical controls. The design and application of homogeneity studies are discussed as they apply to both crushed and pulverised reference materials. Crushed certified reference materials have been utilised by the iron ore industry for a number of years and provide the user with a critical assessment of variances in sample preparation in addition to analysis. Crushed reference materials are similar in presentation to an RC sample and are generally used as discrete parcels of material submitted to the laboratory from the field. Pulverise certified reference materials miss the sample preparation step and are subsampled from th delivered sachet at the point of analysis. This paper compares the relative homogeneity performance of crushed and pulverised certified reference materials by grade across key iron ore chemical constituents. Outcomes are benchmarked to the international standard ISO 9516 (ISO, 2003) for the determination of various elements in iron ores by lithium borate fusion and X-ray fluorescence. Practical implications are discussed with reference to a case study from an iron ore laboratory in the Pilbara.

The Browns Creek deposit is located 8 kin west of Blayney and 220 km west of Sydney (Figure 1), at lat 33¦32'S, long 149¦10'E on the Bathurst (SI 55-8) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. The total measured, indicated and inferred resource at 30 June 1997 was 1.29 Mt at 6.39 g/t gold and 0.45 per cent copper. During the 1996 - 97 year 263 557 t of ore at 6.30 g/t gold and 0.48 per cent copper was treated, to produce 47 496 oz of gold, and 1 169 t of contained copper in concentrate. As the result of an increase in the resources and reserves, because of underground exploration drilling and accelerated mine development, 1997 production at Browns Creek is predicted to expand from 240 000 to 390 000 tpa, to yield more than 70 000 oz of gold per year.

ABSTRACT' The first references to gold in New Guinea were by the Portuguese in 1525. The first significant discovery and gold rush was on Sudest Island in 1888 and was a natural extension of the rush that surged up Australia's eastern coast and ended at cook- town. Prospectors made a series of minor discoveries in coastal regions before the first large discovery at Wau/Edie Creek/Bulolo in 1925. Major post war gold discoveries were made at Bougainville, Frieda River, Porgera and Ok Tedi. On Misima Island a large bulk low grade deposit has been recognised surrounding old gold workings. Gold exploration has increased drama- tically since the lifting of a 3 year moritorium on new exploration areas in Noverrber 1982. A new bulk low grade gold discovery has been made on Lihir Island, north of Bougainville and a number of other promising areas are being drilled. Gold production is also expanding dramatically from current levels of 600,000 ounces to an anticipated 1.3 million ounces in 1985 with the opening of Ok Tedi. Other potential developments are likely to increase output above 2 million ounces by 1990. Papua New Guinea's world ranking as a producer is likely to move from 9th to 7th in 1985 reflecting the favourable geological potential, stable political environment and attractive development terms offered by the Government.

New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.

It has long been known that closed circuit grinding with a classifier improves grinding efficiency, reduces unit specific power consumption, and reduces over grinding. The classification device removes material from the circuit that has reached the desired size and returns coarse material back to the mill for further grinding. The efficiency of the classifier is an important factor in the overall performance of a grinding circuit. The classifier affects the capacity of the grinding circuit and the metallurgical performance of downstream operations.
