The problem of ventilating an advancing drive which finally reached 5,550 ft from the fresh air base in rock with virgin temperature of 83°F was solved economically by the use of two 15 h.p. electric fans forcing ventilating air through 281/2 in. dia. fiexible polythene tubing of wall thickness 0·010 in. The saving in cost over conventional metal duct was estimated to be £3· 24 per ft of drive.INTRODUCTIONAs described by Dutton (1965) and Newton (1965) the existing 1,480' ft level drive at the South Mine, Broken Hill, was extended in two stages. The first extension was 3,790 ft, the face then being 4,790 ft from the fresh air inlet. Later, after a vertical ventilation connection was made 1,000 ft back from the face, the drive was extended a further 4,550 ft. The rate of face advance in both stages was about 15 ft per day (3 shifts of 5 ft), 5 days per week. Drive size was 8 ft by 9 ft 6 in. high.The Mines Inspection Act of New South Wales requires 6 hr shifts (instead of the normal 7 in Broken Hill) to be worked if the wet bulb temperature exceeds 80°F. Virgin rock temperature on the 1,480 ft level was 83°F. Inlet air temperature varied with seasons from 58 to 72,oF wet bulb.To adequately ventilate the face, a flow of air of about 11,000 c.f.m. was thought to be necessary.Re-entry time was about 75 min, being governed by the 7 hr length of shift (3 shifts per day) and travelling time.Blasting was permitted only at the end of the shift, in accordance with local industrial restrictions.

"The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate a different approach to predicting and verifying mechanical sampling system precision. Early in the year 2011 an experiment was conducted to evaluate the sampling precision being obtained by a three-stage falling-stream mechanical sampling system for coal owned and operated by Peabody Energy. This system collects samples from lots averaging approximately 14000 t being loaded onto rail cars at a flow rate averaging about 9000 t/h. In phase 1 of the experiment, a total of 60 increments were collected in a two day period at preassigned intervals using a cross-belt sampler located on a conveyor belt feeding a silo upstream of the sampling system under evaluation. Coal variability parameters were calculated from the resulting laboratory analysis data using the gauge-invariant fractal model developed by the author.Estimates of precision of the three-stage system as a function of the number of increments were calculated using the variability parameters determined in phase 1. In phase 2 of the experiment, duplicate samples of 30 lots of coal were taken by the three-stage sampling system, enabling calculations of the precision being achieved by the system. Phase 2 precision estimates are in reasonable agreement with those of phase 1. Conclusions drawn from the experiment include the following: Experimental variograms or the equivalent correlograms are essential in understanding sampling issues and for designing a sampling system to meet specific precision requirements. Consensus coal sampling standards provided by ISO and ASTM may be improved by treating all stages of a mechanical sampling system as æsamplingÆ rather than considering downstream sampling stages as æsample preparationÆ, to be treated in a separate part of the document. The coal industry would profit from use of methodology for routinely monitoring the overall measurement precision and the precision of the individual components of measurement: sampling, sample preparation and laboratory testing. The third, an abstract concept "knowledge", requires to be quantified, in terms of manpower.A mathematical model, which has general application, was derived to demonstrate certain axiomatic premises and to define, more precisely, basic concepts related to the philosophy of knowledge.Finally a summary is made of education-cum-industry issues.

The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...

Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. Obviously this treatment cannot be regarded as a cure for silicosis, since it cannot restore lung tissue which has undergone fibrotic change; but Crombie and his colleagues believe that the inhalation of finely particulate aluminum powder offers every prospect of preventing the development of human silicosis.In view of these findings, it is surprising that repeated papers by Goralewski from Germany describe various types of lung disease attributed to aluminum dust, and press for them to be scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act in that country. Seven hundred workers were investigated. They were making, probably by a stamping process, aluminium powder containing about four milliards of particles of dust per grain, and are reported as complaining of dry cough with pain on breathing, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and gnawing abdominal pain. In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

Methylene blue dye adsorbs on chalcopyrite concentrates slurried in aqueous solution. Saturation adsorption can be achieved within about 24 hours for dye equilibrium concentrations greater than about 10-5 M. The dsorption coverage is obtained from a measurement of the' colour change of the solution. Comparison with BET measurement of the concentrate surface area shows that 2.4 ± 0.1 µmol of methylene blue are adsorbed per square metre of surface accessible to the dye cation. The procedure described can be used as a single-point measurement and values for the surface area can be otained to within about 10 per cent with inexpensive instrumentation.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. Block caving is becoming a more widely adopted mining method allowing for underground massive low grade orebodies to be extracted economically. Underbreak during cave propagation is difficult to predict in terms of recovery and is not well-researched due to the small number of caving operations. During mining of E26 Lift 2 (E26L2) block cave at CMOC Northparkes Mines, a wedge of high grade material failed to cave, even with the assistance of preconditioning and subsequent attempts to induce caving. The ultimate solution for recovery of the uncaved wedge was the establishment of the E26 sublevel cave (SLC), which commenced mining in 2015, with production following in 2016. The SLC provides approximately 1Mtpa to supplement the lowering grade of the current E48 block cave feed. Applying the sublevel caving methodology to recover block cave underbreak has proven challenging. The impact of the caving stresses and preconditioning of the wedge have caused production limitations requiring continual remediation throughout production of the E26 SLC. The dependence on remediation work created a roadblock to implementing precharging as the prevalence of brow loss raised concerns over the inability to hook up the charged ring. In 2018, a wireless initiation trial was completed in the E26 SLC over 24 rings. The trial showed that precharging was achievable in this environment and greatly improved the safety of charge up personnel.

Investigation of an abandoned quarry near Rowland Flat in South Australia identified asbestiform antigorite as the fibrous serpentine mineral mined during the 1940s to 1978 for filler applications, not amphibole asbestos or chrysotile as reported in earlier investigations. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of individual fibres were used to confirm the identification. Chrysotile is widely regarded as the only asbestos mineral in the serpentine group. Further work was done therefore, on the geology and mineralogy of the occurrence, and the health implications were reviewed. A zone of antigorite alteration, with associated talc, is traceable for 750 m along strike of recrystallised dolomitic siltstone within Woolshed Flat Shale of Neoproterozoic age. The antigorite formed, in part, by replacement of prismatic crystals of probable tremolitic amphibole. The deposit is proximal to the Williamstown Fault and the serpentine-talc alteration is possibly due to fluids expelled along the fault during late-stage deformation in the Early Palaeozoic Delamerian Orogeny. The antigorite comprises white to pale green bundles of lath-shaped fibres that occur either as randomly- arranged equant patches after amphibole or as cross-fibre veins, both intimately mixed with calcite. Highly fibrous product was mined from the weathered zone where calcite was leached during weathering. Gentle grinding releases fibres with a high aspect ratio (>10:1) that show a wide range of fibre thickness, including a significant proportion of fibres <0.25 ¦m width. Toxicological studies on fibrous antigorite from Poland and Italy indicate that the carcinogenic potential of this form of serpentine is similar to amphibole asbestos. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques readily distinguish antigorite from chrysotile. Determination of asbestiform habit and confirmation of antigorite mineralogy is most reliably done using electron microscopy, preferably with SAED capability.

When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. The Australian Gas Light. Company was established in 1837, the first gas being sent out from the Kent Street Works, then the headquarters, in 1841. Mortlake Works were opened in 1886, and has since grown to the vast undertaking inspected by members of the Institute.The Kent Street Works were closed in 1921. Mr Kapp's paper helps considerably to clarify the subsidence/mine geometry relationships in New South Wales. It is in the best tradition of the presentation of field investigations such as has built up internationalknowledge over the years.The Author has plotted in Fig. 10, the maximum subsidence developed over each of a number of panels of different width/depth ratios and concludes that the maximum possible subsidence over a super critical extractionarea is around 0.65 of the mining height and that this is reached with the critical width/depth ratio of extraction of around 1.5.Although, as Mr. Kapp says, the maximum possible subsidence in the UK can reach 90% of the seam thickness extracted the more usual figure for the first seam is up to 80%. It has also been found in the UK that with shallow workings such as those at Kemiro Coliery the critical width of extraction is 2.0 or more times the depth.

THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

For small particles of niekel flotation eoncentrate (av. size 50 pm) the predominant heat transfer mechanism under suspension smelting conditions, prior to ignition, is conduction from the gas and not radiation from nearby hot bodies. Results of laboratory tests using gas temperatures 380-700°C and furnace wall temperatures 380-1100°C were in accord with heat transfer theory. In practieal flash smelters earlier ignition, and hence better utilization of the space in the shaft, would result from introduetion at the top of the shaft of gases hotter than the ignition temperature of 500-600°C.

A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. In choosing such a threadbare subject for a paper I fear that I may in some measure be taxing your patience, yet as upon the accuracy with which the work is done depends the result of conclusions drawn as to whether a property will be profitable to work or otherwise. The subject cannot be too well threshed out, and I trust that upon certain points that have come within my own experience I may be able to give 'hints that will prevent others from making mistakes. First as to alluvial. Gold is often found from the grass roots down, often ill particular horizontal bands in the wash, but more generally concentrated either on a true or false bottom. When sampling dry ground for proposed hydraulicing I have obtained accurate results only by taking the whole of the dirt from measured shafts, stacking it as it was lifted on a tarpaulin, and putting the whole quantity through a carefully constructed box. In wet ground careful borings will in most cases give fairly correct results, but where it is possible to sink shafts, that should be done, as a guide is then also obtained as to the nature of the wash, whether it is bouldery, cemented, or free. Sampling in a face is a more difficult work in many respects than in new ground, as so many elements enter into action to spoil accurate sampling. Of course the great thing to avoid is sampling in any place where either natural or artificial concentration has taken place, and very much has to be left to circumstance and the sampler's own judgment. In passing I may mention that I have on several occasions seen diggers deceive themselves in wet ground where they were sinking and coping as best they might with water. They would take a dish of dirt from the bottom of their hole, pan it off, and take the result as a fair yield, and on the strength of it perhaps spend a lot of time and money in tail races and whereas in their sample there had been a process of concentration carried on, the movement and working in the water had caused the gold to work down, and anything like accurate estimations by the method pursued were out of the question.
