This paper looks at recent advances in the United Kingdom (UK) tunnelling industry with particular reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. A 1.8 km long twin bore tunnel is the centrepiece of the A3 Hindhead scheme, which commenced construction in 2007 and is being delivered under a UK Highways Agency early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunnelling medium is a æsoft rockÆ sandstone for which there was little previous tunnelling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240 m long section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels. The innovative approach to the design of the following is discussed:the æpermanentÆ primary lining,an observational technique allowing optimisation of the steel pipe umbrella design,a plain concrete secondary lining designed for resistance to a hydrocarbon fire, anda spray-applied membrane.

A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity. Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer. Having concluded that steaming coal in particular is likely to become even more important as a generator of base load electricity, the paper looks at the opportunities this presents for exporters such as Australia, and touches on some factors that could prevent development of those opportunities. This paper will concentrate on electrical energy. For the purposes of this paper, the Pacific Basin refers essentially to Australia, New Zealand and the Asian countries bordering the Western Pacific. As a supplier, Siberia is not included because, although it has great potential, it is thought that problems of climate, infrastructure and political restructuring will delay the realisation of that potential until the next century. Although it deals with the Pacific Basin region, where many countries are industrialising rapidly from a predominantly agricultural base, it looks at the experience of mature industrial DECD economies where their experiences seem relevant.

Due to the international depletion of reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, the ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia, have changed drastically from hard hematitic to more goethitic ore types, such as pisolitic and Marra Mamba ores. The level of impurities and loss on ignition in iron ore has also been slowly increasing. Finally, the proportion of fine material in the available products has increased considerably for most iron ore fines. This has been found to have significant impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. Magnetite concentrate is typically high in Fe grade and releases extra heat when oxidised to hematite. The amount of magnetite concentrates is expected to increase due to the recent development of a number of magnetite projects. Some of these magnetite concentrates will end in sinter blends. This will not only improve the sinter quality and but also have a beneficial impact on the fuel consumption of the sintering process. However, most of the concentrates available are very fine, which will negatively impact the green bed permeability and consequently the productivity of the sintering process. Fine Gravity Separation in the Reflux Classifier, Exploiting a High Shear Rate, Laminar Flow Mechanism The Reflux Classifier is used in the gravity separation of particles over a broad range of particle sizes. The device consists of a fluidised bed zone, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. The inclined channels provide a significant hydraulic advantage over conventional fluidised beds via the so-called Boycott Effect (Boycott, 1920). This paper describes a new advance in fine gravity separation based on the high shear rate and laminar flow profile that arises when closely spaced inclined channels are deployed. As reported recently (Galvin et al, 2009a), a powerful density based separation mechanism develops from this arrangement, suppressing the effects of particle size. In this paper we focus on two areas, firstly the application of the separator in the laboratory for batch fractionation of particles of varying size and density to determine the grade recovery curve and hence the liberation, and secondly the step change in separation performance achieved on a continuous steady state basis when closely spaced inclined channels are used. The variation in the separation density with particle size decreases significantly, and the Ecarte Probable Error (Ep) remains at low levels over a broad size range.

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

Planning for the Macraes Extension project highlighted the need for additional tailings storage availability. The possible solution of developing new tailings impoundments in Northern Gully, in tum, led to concerns being expressed by the regUlatory authority over the assimilative capacity of Deepdell Creek. Philosophical differences over the appropriateness of applying a seepage model used to set standards in consents for the original project resulted in the company re-evaluating the whole monitoring system associated with tailings disposal and seepage control. Re-evaluation indicated problems arising from the existing in-stream water quality monitoring in respect of protection of the aquatic ecological system and verifiability of results. A new monitoring system was designed relocating the compliance monitoring point out of the stream and into the gully containing the tailings impoundments giving greater certainty of monitoring results to all parties and providing improved protection for the aquatic ecology of Deepdell Creek.

The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

It outlines how the results of research undertaken in New Zealand and overseas can help producers address a range of technical factors that impact on production costs and marketability. The paper also discusses trends in coal utilisation for power generation and how new technologies may require coal with different characteristics. Research and development into options for CO2 sequestration are discussed including carbon storage in forests, and removal of CO2 from flue or fuel gas in power stations, and its disposal.

Post-metamorphic structural evolution of Otago Schist resulted in a pattern of northwest and northeast striking faults and fractures cutting the basement rocks. These faults have been reactivated several times since Mesozoic metamorphism. Gold-bearing quartz veins which have been exploited sporadically over the past 130 years are almost invariably hosted by northwest striking structures, and most exploration has been focussed on these structures. There is evidence for hydrothermal activity and mineralisation along some of the northeast striking structures, although there has been very little work done on these structures. Our study is attempting to characterise the hydrothermal processes in the northeast structures, in comparison to the northwest structures, in order to see if further detailed exploration is warranted. There is evidence for both normal and reverse senses of movement on northeast striking faults, and some of the faults have evidence for early ductile deformation overprinted by later brittle structures. Northeast striking structures host stibnite mineralisation in places, and faults are locally silicified or extensively impregnated with ankeritic carbonate. Sulphides are rare in veins, but do occur in some hydrothermally altered host rocks. Hydrothermal haematite accompanies extensive silicification along the Manuherikia fault zone near Alexandra. Anomalous gold concentrations occur in some hydrothennal zones, and in downslope sediments in some localities.

It is the role of the exploration geologist to create wealth through the discovery, delineation and characterisation of economic mineralisation. This requires a critical depth of geological understanding.Unfortunately, the resource industry is well known for its cyclic nature. Many of the current generation of workers have only ever experienced the boom of the ‘super-cycle’ and are only just discovering the negative side to the business. For the case of the geologist and especially the exploration geologist, the magnitude of peaks and troughs are usually amplified and may become destructive to all parties. During the uptime a healthy stream of exploration good news becomes the staple diet of company releases, in particular those of junior companies attempting to bolster the share price. The geological knowledge and experience gained thus forms a significant and integral part of the value and therefore, future of a company. On the downturn it is often viewed that geologists are a luxury, an optional extra and a burden on the bottom line with companies entering a period of memory loss and myopia.Retention of geological knowledge however remains critical as projects, companies and cycles mature. Beyond exploration per se, this knowledge becomes both fundamental in de-risking and commercialising an asset (through development or divestment) and in positioning the company for cyclic or counter-cyclic opportunities.The growth and retention of this knowledge base is difficult to quantify in terms of direct value but becomes one of a successful resource companies greatest assets. At worst, its loss can lead to millions of investors’ funds wasted on missed opportunities, drilling, or poorly designed plant and mine.But the rocks are around for the longer haul and pay little notice to the vagaries of the scurrying of Man.This paper reflects on some of the authors own observations through 25 years of iron ore exploration, in why it is critical to always rigorously question the prevailing geological (mis)understanding and the technical and commercial benefits which that may bring, and looks forward to the future.CITATION:Kepert, D, 2015. The factors influencing mobile equipment fleet cost and performance commence at the time of mine planning and continue to exert an influence over the life of the mine. These factors must be understood at the early stages of any operationÆs planning process as they continue to impact both positively and negatively on fleet performance and operating cost throughout the life of the mine. The key factors examined in this paper include: grades; rolling resistance; fragmentation and truck loading.

The installation of the Flotation Capacity Project flow sheet in the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The project involved increasing the flotation capacity with Wemco tank cells and Jameson cells as well as changing the copper cleaner circuit layout. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion had significant involvement from operational, maintenance and technical personnel adopting the same approach as the highly successful George Fisher project in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at MIM. The involvement of people familiar with the concentrator allowed for smooth integration of the changes into an operating concentrator with minimal downtime. Detailed circuit analysis over many years identified opportunities for improvements in the flotation circuit for both grade and recovery. This paper describes the program of work that led to the Copper Concentrator Flotation Capacity Project, and the implementation of the circuit expansion and flow sheet changes that resulted in an overall improvement in the circuit recovery.

There are currently two operators producing oil from the surface-mineable portions of AlbertaÆs oil sands (Syncrude Canada Ltd and Suncor Inc) and two other companies are proposing to enter the industry (Albian Sands Energy Inc in 2002 and True North Energy LP in 2004). Tailings from the two current oil sands plants contain approximately 220 000 tonnes per year of TiO2 and approximately 80 000 tonnes per year of zircon. This represents approximately six per cent of the worldÆs TiO2 consumption and approximately nine per cent of the worldÆs zircon production. With the commissioning of plants by Albian and True North, and the announced expansion of plants by Syncrude and Suncor, it is expected that these tonnages could quadruple in the next ten years. All of these operators have at least 50 years of reserves even at these expanded production rates. The occurrence of heavy minerals in AlbertaÆs oil sands has long been known and is well documented in the literature. There have been a number of attempts to produce market-grade products from this resource and the results of this work have been quite mixed. Typically, researchers have used the normal mineral dressing techniques of the industry and have found the mineral assemblage does not respond to these techniques all that well. This has led to the widely-held suspicion that there must be some difficult metallurgical problems associated with this resource. There are three main problem areas that have created difficulties for previous researchers:the bitumen coating on the sand grains; secondary mineralisation such as pyrite, siderite and calcite; and a high proportion of aluminosilicates (approximately 25 per cent) that have the same gravity, electrostatic and magnetic properties as other minerals in the heavy mineral suite. Recent work by Lakefield Research shows that these problems can be largely overcome with some novel approaches. The bitumen can be removed by washing with a solvent in the presence of a demulsifier; the pyrite can be removed by flotation; and the titanium and zircon minerals can be separated by selective flotation followed by conventional electrostatic and magnetic separation.

Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

As one of the four basic sciences, the study of geology is intrinsically worthy as a means of increasing fundamental knowledge of the behaviour and evolution of the universe. Geological knowledge can also be translated into practical outcomes for society such as resource discovery and protection of the environment. Australia has a long tradition of providing very high quality geoscience programs to prepare graduates for a range of occupations. We are, however, reaching a nexus in the way universities should or can deliver engaging programs. This has been triggered by the rapid evolution of the digital world (the Internet of Things), new technologies, unprecedented access to information, better understanding of the processes by which we learn and adapt our thinking, growing complexity in the problems we must face or opportunities to grasp, and university funding models. Designing education programs for the next generation of geologists extends far beyond tinkering with syllabuses. We must develop skills sets that will allow graduates to work in rapidly changing landscapes, but in doing so may have to sacrifice content to build capability in our graduates. Whereas universities must respond to changing demands on graduates by ensuring degree programs contain an appropriate balance of material and high quality of delivery, industry and government must also fulfil their responsibilities to provide additional training programs for graduates to assist their rapid transition into independent professionals. This paper examines various educational issues being considered in developing the new Decadal Plan for the Earth Sciences, and reflects on directions that education is heading in many of our universities.CITATION:Cohen, D R, 2017. Initial analysis of Long Offset Time Domain Electromagnetic (LOTEM) data has traditionally been made in terms of early and late time apparent resistivities. By using more than one grounded bipole as a source, a tensor analysis technique analogous to the method used to analyse DC resistivity multiple-source bipole-dipole surveying may be formulated. We define the æinstantaneous apparent resistivity tensorÆ as the tensor that relates the total electric field vectors at each instant to the steady state (DC) uniform half space current density vectors due to each source. Instantaneous apparent resistivity tensors calculated for a 3D resistivity model suggest that profiles of LOTEM measurements across simple 3D structures can be used to create an image that reproduces the main features of the subsurface resistivity. Where measurements are distributed over an area, maps of the tensor invariants or the tensor ellipses at different times can be made into a sequence of images which provide a way of ætime slicingÆ down through the target structure.

Energy Savings and Technology Comparison Using Small Grinding Media Considering the complexity of minerals, the need for finer grinding is increasing along with the energy cost. However, energy is increasing exponentially when grinding finer with conventional grinding balls. The use of small grinding media represents the best potential to improve energy efficiency. Today, it is possible to use grinding media as small as 1 mm. How do they perform in industrial grinding mills? The use of small grinding media (5 - 12 mm), called Millpebs, in regrind mills proved that finer grinding can be achieved at lower energy consumption. In ball mills, energy savings vary from 10 per cent to 40 per cent compared to 25 mm media. A regrind ball mill with a mix of small grinding media can be as energy efficient as an Isa Mill charged with 2.5 and 3.5 mm beads. In vertical stirred mills, energy savings vary from 30 per cent to 60 per cent. To carry out the same final grind, a vertical stirred mill with Millpebs will consume at least 60 per cent less energy than a ball mill using 25 mm grinding media. More potential savings were identified. To achieve those improvements, some operating conditions must be met: 1) feed size should be less than 250 ¦m; 2) the pulp must be fluid enough; 3) finally, the slurry linear velocity should not be excessive. This paper talks about all those industrial results improvement and operating conditions.
