LITTLE new oil was found in West Virginia, during 1923, but there were important discoveries of gas. Most of the large oil producers have contented themselves with pumping old wells or in drilling only enough new wells in defined territory to maintain a fairly constant production, the attitude being that no, profit is made in producing high-grade oil at a low price and that an eventual loss is sustained by draining the reserves of a limited commodity that, at some more favorable time, will be of much value. The representative of one large company said: "We have done nothing but pump old wells during 1923 and we have made no plans for 1924." Careful attention to producing wells has been the rule, there having been few abandonments; the belief is prevalent that small wells will eventually become profitable under more favorable marketing conditions. In natural gas, the opposite point of view prevails. Because of the vast capabilities of the state for producing gas, its output being ahead of all others, great systems of transportation and distribution into the markets of four adjoining states have been built and a demand has been created that no present, or apparently potential, production can satisfy. This demand has become so great that large distributing companies not only discourage new applications for service but advise old customers to install coal furnaces for auxiliary fuel; some have requested public-service commissions to grant higher 'rates against large industrial consumers than those allowed for domestic heating. The response to this known market has been a rapid increase in price, both at the well mouth and at the door of the ultimate consumer, and the industry has become so stable that the only uncertainty, or hazard, appears to be the question of the presence of gas in fair quantity in a given territory under consideration. Several oil companies have now forsaken their policy of selling gas, wells outright when drilled and ;have organized gas departments to drill for gas and to dispose of the daily output by meter to distributing corporations. With such companies and with other producers whose interest is chiefly gas, the year has been busy and profitable. Some new territory of apparently large value has been proved and deeper producing sands in old fields have been tapped.

A MUD-conditioning program found to be very effective for drilling and completion operations on routine field wells requiring relatively short drilling time involves a moderate alkaline-tannate-bentonite treatment resulting in an ultimate filtration rate of 10.0 cc or less (API test). Mud weight schedules are planned from pressure information on completed wells in producing reservoirs and drill-stem test data obtained on other zones not being produced at present. In general, terminal mud viscosities average 45 sec (Marsh). This value has been found to be sufficient to remove cuttings from the well bore on the average well, with the slush pumps in general use on the rigs. On field wells requiring drilling times in excess of approximately 30 days, an alkaline-tannate-lime-bentonite treatment has been effective in maintaining desirable viscosities and filtration rates with a substantial reduction in chemical costs. This system has shown particular advantage on heavily weighted muds and those with abnormal flow-line temperatures. For the most part, the chemical treatment utilized in wildcat drilling follows closely the program used on field wells, depending on depth and duration of drilling operations. Wildcat mud programs are planned from information available from various geologic and operational sources, taking into consideration the possibility of encountering mud problems of a special nature in the wildcat area. Careful planning of wildcat mud pro- grams has proved to have definite value in avoiding most serious mud problems. An analysis and recommended treatment are presented on several special. mud problems which have been encountered in the area in the past. Those problems discussed are lost circulation, blowouts, sloughing shale, excessive chloride contamination, sulphate contamination, and prevention and correction of cement contamination. Introduction Drilling-mud control in the Southwest Texas area, in general, does not involve the multiplicity of problems encountered in other coastal areas. For instance, it is rare that a mixture of problems such as lost circulation, abnormal pressure, severe sloughing shale, and others, occurs on one well within close enough limits in vertical depth not to be taken care of by a sensible casing program, together with a relatively clear-cut mud program. There are conditions such as the fairly widespread occurrence of abnormal pressure in the lower Frio and Vicksburg zones, and the tendency for sloughing shale in the Jackson section which make for rather expensive mud control. However, the availability of fairly accurate geologic and operational information makes possible a reasonable degree of standardization on mud treatment over a relatively large area. It may be said that, over most of this area where drilling is currently in progress, the natural mud made is very poor in quality, but responds readily to moderate chemical treatment to yield very good wall-building characteristics. A century ago, Thomas Carlyle sketched the Emblem of the Wasting Candle in one of his papers. "Terar Dum Prosim" he wrote under the candle-" May I be wasted so that I be of use." The application of his reasoning is an excellent guide for a discussion of the scrap problems of today. The General Electric Co. has addressed itself to the need of proper and careful preparation of scrap metals for many years. A supervisor of salvage directs this work in each of the works. Generally he is an engineer and has had broad factory training. He gives general direction to the collection, preparation and disposition of scrap materials. He operates the extensive facilities which each works has provided for the centralization and control of scrap accumulations, and also initiates studies leading to the reduction of scrap accruing from machining and assembly operations. r We recognize that each industry, each factory, each locality faces a different set of conditions. Irrespective of size, in a plant employing 20 men or a large works with 15,00 employees-certain fundamental principles can be applied for organization and the collection of scrap. The manufacture of electrical apparatus is a highly complicated intricate business. In one area we make electronic tube and adjacent buildings house the manufacture of steam turbines. Both are instruments for power-different in size and in many cases serving different fields of application. Unlike the great industries that build automobiles, trucks, or engines where repetitive operations, once solved, set the stage, electrical manufacturers' plants are large jobbing shops. Therefore, we must carefully plan every step in handling the scrap that "in so wasting to produce the finished motor or locomotive-we can return this product to reprocessing and ultimate use." ESSENTIALS FOR SALVAGE EFFICIENCY The essential steps for an efficient salvage department are: I. Selection of Personnel.-An able foreman would be a man of broad experience and understanding-one who commands the respect of the entire foreman group as well as that of his own men. In the interest of clean scrap, it is necessary to acquaint the foremen in the separate manufacturing units with the need of careful segregation in the shop and the best methods of obtaining it. At least 40 per cent contact time should be devoted for this purpose. 2. The physical equipment of the salvage department should be devised and selected to handle complete, at one point, all scrap operations. There is acute need for a method that will measure the size distribution of finely divided materials, particularly when the particle sizes are smaller than the openings of the finest screen cloth regularly available for testing. Several methods and types of apparatus are in common use, but none are entirely satisfactory for all purposes. The commonest methods are microscopic grain counts, elutriation by liquids or air, and sedimentation. Valuable results have been secured by air elutriating devices, typified by the Haultain Infra-Sizer and the Pearson Air Analyzer. These are especially useful in obtaining sized fractions that can be examined and analyzed separately. They are particularly advantageous because the sizes of the samples produced are adequate for a considerable amount of subsequent manipulation and testing. The sedimentation methods, such as the Wagner and Klein turbidimeters, and the sedimentation balance, do not deliver sized fractions, but they do provide a means for reasonably rapid comparative determina-tions of fineness and surface area, which are important in many industries. The sedimentation balance consists essentially of a balance pan suspended in a liquid that contains falling particles. These are weighed as they settle onto the pan, and the time rate of settling is determined. The size distribution is computed from the settling rate. The balance appears to be inherently more accurate than any of the other methods, and it has served a useful purpose in the study of numerous problems, but there have been limitations which have restricted its scope of application. Because of the essential simplicity of the method, it was felt that intensive investigation might lead to modifications that would make it a valuable tool [or the operators in industries that require precise information regarding the results secured from grinding equipment. A large number of size-distribution determinations below 200 mesh were required in connection with a particular research problem in fine grinding. The sedimentation balance was used in this investigation, and a technique was gradually developed that ultimately gave good results. A serious difficulty appeared early in the work. It was discovered that less material always settled on the sedimentation pan and more on the bottom of the containing jar than could be accounted for by calculation, and also that the material that settled to the bottom of the jar outside the edges of the pan was considerably finer than that on the pan. This segregation was so great that the distribution obtained for the finer sizes was obviously very much in error; material ground to about the degree of comminution of cement might have only 60 per cent of the calculated weight actually settling on the pan, and the error increased with the fine-

The petroleum industry includes varied and extensive operations required to supply increasing quantities of refined petroleum products and natural gas that are essential for the economic progress of an expanding population Petroleum has provided the power for the transformation from the "horse and buggy days" to the age of jets and space exploration, and for the remarkable improvement in productivity per worker in agriculture and manufacturing. Without increasing quantities of oil and gas, the world would face painful readjustments to more expensive forms of energy and lower standards of living Petroleum operations start with exploration, development, and production activities that supply the basic crude oil and natural gas Pipelines, ships, barges, and trucks first transport the raw materials to processing centers and then move the finished products to the ultimate consumers. Processing plants extract liquids from natural gas and refineries convert crude oil into a wide range of products These products include transportation fuels, feedstocks for conversion into numerous products (such as fabrics, rubber, and plastics), light fuels for heating, lubricants, and heavy residual materials (industrial fuel oil, asphalt, and coke) The final activity of wholesale distribution and retail marketing moves products into millions of homes, farms, industrial plants, and motor vehicles The use of coal exceeded that of oil and gas until 1946 in the United States and until 1968 in the rest of the world. However, oil and gas have proved to be such convenient and attractively priced fuels that they now supply three-fourths of the total commercial energy (including coal, hydroelectric, and nuclear power) used in North America and more than one-half in the rest of the world. The problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations. An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper. The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reagent for re-use. The Process as Planned In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp. became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the company, first drafted a process in July of that year—five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant. By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or lour-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1472°F). (b) The roasted ore would then be leached with hot aqueous ammonium bi-sulphate to form a slurry. Marked improvement in the serviceability of sucker rods has been effected in the last two years, partly because of the insistent necessity for greater economy in the operating costs of crude oil production growing out of the general industrial depression and partly because many of the recently developed fields have imposed more severe operating conditions upon both surface and underground equipment. The latter is particularly true of Kansas, where practically all of the oil produced is associated with damaging amounts of hydrogen sulfide brine and where the method of establishing potential production demands equipment capable of being operated at maximum capacity without interruptions. The decline of flush production in the Oklahoma City field created new problems in deep-well pumping on a scale heretofore unequaled and the increased proportion of water it has been necessary to produce in the fields of the Greater Seminole area presented conditions that were acutely in need of betterment. The problem in the latter fields was complicated by the shift towards sulfide characteristics, which accompanied water encroachment, and it is probably true that nowhere, at the present time, are pumping conditions generally as severe as in this territory. The Mid-Continent district, therefore, has become the proving ground for the numerous materials that have been proposed for sucker-rod fabrication. The information that ultimately will be obtained from an unprecedented amount of field experimentation will pay ample dividends when the decline of East Texas increases the demand for the vast reserves of sour crude in West Texas. It is a rare occurrence in industry that the use of such a simple piece of equipment as a sucker rod presents so complicated a problem for solution. As proof of this, it is only necessary to consider the numerous types of sucker rods on the market at the present time and contrast this condition with that of less than four years ago, when it was the common aim of manufacturers to develop a single sucker rod for all conditions of

FOR many years the cost of making pig iron and steel in the Birmingham district has been about the lowest in the United States. The close proximity of the important raw materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone, and the large available scrap supply made it possible to assemble all of the important ingredients necessary for steel- making with only nominal costs for transportation. Both iron ore and coal were being mined in this district at one time for about $1 per ton from underground operations. At that time mining wages were low everywhere and the labor rate in the South was considerably below that of other mining districts. This situation persisted until the emergence of labor unions as an economic and political force, emigation of southern labor to northern plants, and continued growth of industry in the South in the years following the depression of 1932. Since that time union organizing of miners and steel workers throughout the nation has increased labor costs in mining and steelmaking. This influence has been felt particularly in underground mining operations since the proportion of labor cost to total cost is still high. The previous advantage in basic labor rate in the South has been almost entirely eliminated by the equalization of labor rates in basic industries by national unions. Since 1945 these influences have been especially noticeable in increasing the cost of mining coal and iron ore in the South. The northern steel districts are still being largely supplied with iron ore from the Minnesota open-pit mines and the cost of this ore has not increased nearly as much as the cost of ore obtained from underground mines in Birmingham. A similar situation exists in coal mining; the thinner seams in Alabama are not so amenable to mechanization as the northern mines and, as a result, the output per man-day in southern mines is only about three tons of coal as compared to five or six tons per man-day in the large captive mines of West Vir-

GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which differential movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. RECENT jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out of the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely different ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. C. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Columbia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, Y8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to serve for suspension. A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs. 2 and 3. DEFINITIONS The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a shorlrange product is one closely sized. Abrasives include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (sandblasting, for example). They do not include abrasive tools-for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical-action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives; for example, many automobile and metal polishes. General Considerations The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded grain abrasives such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example, in garnet for sandpaper, neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains are wanted. For still other uses, great hardness is objectionable; for example, abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps. For the most efficient use in the more critical applications, the different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable; thus, while crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the papers are not at all interchangeable in their use applications. In the last analysis, the choice of a high-grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work done by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive. may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive but the artificial abrasive may do so much better work than the natural one, and do it so much faster, that the ultimate cost will be less. It is on this basis that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives for grinding metal. Classification Abrasives may be divided into two general classes, natural and manufactured. A method is described whereby the relationship of both the "at-pressure" powder compact density and the "zero-pressure" compact density to the applied pressure may be obtained from continuous measurements of punch movement during a single compaction operation. The rate of density increase with applied pressure for the metal powders is found to be proportional to the volume fraction of pores for pressures exceeding a lower limit which varies from 15,000 to 30,000 psi, depending on the powder. 1 HE compaction of powdered materials is carried out primarily to increase the density of the material. If the ultimate goal of the over-all process is the attainment of minimum porosity, compaction is responsible for most of the densification. For example, loose powdered metals have porosities of about 65 to 75 pct. Axial loading in a die or hydrostatic pressure may effectively reduce the porosity of most powders to 20 pct or lower with pressures of 50,000 psi and greater. The relationship between the density of a powder compact and the pressure needed to achieve that density is most commonly obtained by pressing several compacts, each at a different pressure. Measurement of the densities of the individual compacts when they are removed from the die then provides the density-pressure relationship. However, this method suffers from several disadvantages. Because a large number of compacts and pressing operations are required, it is inherently slow. Furthermore, since density measurements are made after the specimens are removed from the die, data obtained refer only to pressures greater than those necessary to form a coherent compact. The third disadvantage is the inability of this method to provide information about the compact density at the applied pressure in the die. Because the determination of density-pressure relationships has been a slow, tedious process, investigators have sought to express the compaction behavior of powders by other means. The general terms "comparability" and L'compressibility" have been used to rank powders qualitatively according to their compaction characteristics. To restore a quantitative nature to the subject and to prevent confusion, Schwarzkopf1 has proposed that compac-tibility be defined as the minimum pressure needed to produce a given green strength, while compressibility should be used to indicate the extent to which the density of a powder is increased by a given pressure. Probably the most widely used of the compaction parameters is the "compression ratio,'' which is generally defined as the ratio of the compact density obtained by pressing at a given pressure to the apparent density of the loose powder.2 However, the description of the compaction behavior of a powder by these parameters provides only limited information about the process because of their applicability to just one specific condition such as a given green strength or a given pressure. The method of obtaining density-pressure relationships which will be described in the present paper was designed to eliminate the shortcomings of the previous techniques while maintaining equivalent accuracy and precision. The "frac" method of well stimulation has been applied successfully to all producing formations in the Permian Basin area. During the five years since its development, many changes and improvements have been made in treating materials. procedures, and equipie11t. A number of fluid carrying agents, having different physica1 and chemical properties, have been developed to meet variorus well requirements. The current trend is toward larger gallonage treatments, employing higher injection rates. The use of "down-the-casing" techniques has greatly reduced high surface working pressures, attributable to friction losses resulting from injection throrugh tubing. Petrographic studies of various Permian Basin formations, coordinated with laboratory and well log data, have been found a valuable guide in planning frac treat111o1t.s. A knowledge of the extent (and orientation of naturally occurring fractures and planes of weakness in the formation, aid in predicting the ultimate drainage pattern resulting from the frac treatment. INTRODUCTION The South Permian Basin covers an area in Wcst Texas and New Mexico about onc-half the size of the state of Texas, This vast region has been called the "Permian Basin" for so long that the term will he used here. It includes an area south of the Matador Arch. approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. Structural features of importance within the basin are the Northwest Shelf, Eastern Platform, Midland Basin, Central Basin Platform, and Delaware Basin. The principal producing formations include sand, limestone and dolo-mite, with lesser amounts of shale, anhydrite. chert. and various silicates. All of the producing formations in the Permian Basin have responded to some type of frac treatment. Essentially, a frac treatment may be defined as the injection, into a formation. of a fluid carrying agent containing a particulated solid (usually sand), for the purpose of increasing production. The application of this method of well stimulation to many differing Permian Basin reservoirs has necessitated numerous changes and improvements in carrying agents, solids, service equipment. well equipment. and treating techniques. CARRYING AGENTS A number of different types of fluid carrying agents have been developed since the introduction of the frac method of well stimulation. These agents have different physical and chemical properties, and in many cases the extent of production increase derived from the frac treatment depends on the choice of fluid carrier. Unfortunately, due to many different systems of nomenclature used in the oil field, these differences are not always recognized by the oil Operator. THE beginning of the war and the events leading up to it precipitated a near crisis in the aluminum industry. Demands for the metal reached proportions far beyond the prewar production capacities and, in addition, the submarine menace seriously curtailed the importation of bauxite from South America, hitherto a chief source of high-grade ore. The situation required an intensive search for domestic ore to augment the reserves and in October 1941 Congress directed the Department of the Interior to investigate the extent, mode of occurrence, and quality of bauxite in the United States. In December of that year the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey began the search for bauxite in Arkansas, where more than 90 per cent of the domestic ore had been produced and where the greatest amount of bauxite was known to occur. The program involves the geophysical and geological investigation of the Arkansas bauxite region and the core drilling of areas considered favorable for the occurrence of bauxite deposits. Cores taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone are sampled and analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Little Rock. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as originally proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours. Introduction This is the Pacific Rim. Nearly three fourths of the world's population live on or near its border. In the recent past, on any given day, one could find traversing its„ borders pirates, smugglers, gunrunners, missionaries, slave traders, tourists, and businessmen. If one were not too observant, he would notice that over the last several years the ocean traffic in the Rim has pretty much stayed the same--Polynesian outriggers, passenger ships, general cargo vessels, ore carriers, and oil tankers. If he were to look a little closer, he would notice some coal colliers. A still closer look would reveal that most of them were hauling metallurgical coal destined for the steel mills of Japan, Taiwan, or Korea. If his senses were keen, he would observe that not only were the number of colliers increasing dramatically, but also that a relatively new cargo was being carried to those countries as well as additional areas in the Pacific Rim., This new cargo thermal coal holds the promise of not only exceeding the metallurgical coal trade, but significantly cutting into and decreasing the already vast oil tanker business throughout the Pacific Rim. The high price of crude oil as a result of the oil embargo in the Middle East in 1973-74 has forced the Pacific Rim countries to convert to coal, and as a result, the coal resources of the Rim are being exploited at an ever-increasing rate. Although coal produced outside the Pacific Rim does enter its borders for ultimate consumption from such places as South Africa and the East Coast of the United States, the vast majority of thermal coal that will enter this booming market place will be sourced from countries within the Pacific Rim. Accordingly, this paper will provide an overview of those sources with particular emphasis on the non-communist block nations. This is not to say that countries such as China and Russia will not be players in the Pacific Rim thermal coal arena, but that -most consuming countries in the Rim are basing the majority of their near-term sourcing requirements from countries that provide a stable source of supply. Pacific Rim Coal Resources Figure 1 is a map of the Pacific Rim countries and identification of major coal resource locations within its border. Going in a clockwise direction, the following countries will be the major suppliers of thermal coal through the year 2000: Australia, Indonesia, China, Russia, Alaska (U.S.), Canada, United States (Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana), and Colombia, South America. Other countries such as New Zealand, Malaysia, Philippines, Korea, etc., will play a role in supply, but compared to the ones previously mentioned, will only have a minor impact. When one looks at the vast stretch of ocean that separates the sourcing countries from the consuming countries (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.), one realizes that costs of transportation will play a significant role in determining which countries and in what quantities coal will be purchased. THE percentage of manganese used in commercial aluminum alloys is small, and yet this element is an important addition to some very valuable alloys. When used alone with commercial aluminum containing iron and silicon as impurities, the usual percentage in wrought materials is from 1 to 1.5 per cent., whereas castings may contain as much as 2 per cent. An aluminum-manganese alloy containing nominally 1.25 per cent. manganese is much used in sheet form for the manufacture of cooking utensils and other articles requiring a little greater strength and hardness than could be obtained with commercially pure aluminum. It is also used for various purposes in the form of rods, tubes and pipes. The aluminum-manganese alloys, both wrought 'and cast, offer excellent resistance to many kinds of corrosion attack. The U. S. Naval Gun Factory uses an aluminum alloy containing from 1 to 2 per cent. each of copper and manganese, for both castings and forgings. Manganese is also used, up to about 1 per cent., as a minor alloying .element in several of the strong aluminum alloys of the duralumin type. It is felt that the role of this element when thus used has not been fully understood, but it is believed that the results obtained in this investigation will throw additional light on the subject. The earlier work on the system aluminum-manganese was general in nature, and no detailed investigations of the relations existent in the useful aluminum-rich alloys have been reported. Guilletl1in 1902 surveyed the system, and Hendrichs2 in 1908 published an equilibrium diagram which, although based on .few data, is often used in the literature. Fragmentary work has also been done by other investigators."

9.61. Introduction. Open pit mining methods produce more than 80% of all raw materials today in the United States. Much of this comes either from properties that formerly employed underground methods and were converted to open pit or from mines that ultimately must go underground when the economic stripping limit is reached. Generally the ores are transported over large vertical distances and techniques have been developed to do this economically. One approach is to combine conventional surface trucking, over relatively level roads, with the use of gravity and underground facilities. There are various modifications, depending upon the character of the orebody and the topography. Several schemes, as used in Sweden, Canada, and the United States, merit describing. One of the critical problems involved in the transference of ores from surface to underground is that of flow of bulk solids. Must it be crushed? Will it hang up in the transfer? What size and inclination of ore pass are required. How is the ore best fed onto the transporting device underground? As an example, the planning engineers for the Carol Project of the Iron Ore Company of Canada faced these problems in making their designs for the production and transportation of some 55,000 tpd from their Smallwood Mine in Labrador. Other operations, facing somewhat similar conditions, used other approaches of interest. This chapter describes some of the factors involved in the design, construction, and operation of a combination surface underground transportation system as applied to open pit mining operations. 9.62. They can be regarded as a proof of ionic splitting of water molecules dissolved in slags. The assumption that water dissolved in slag was com- pletely ionized was made in my report on hydrogen equilibria in steelmaking as early as 194010. In that paper, the first systematic data were given on the content of ionized hydrogen in acid and basic open-hearth slags.
