The recent iastallation of a combination dust catcher, gas washer and precipitator at Carrie blast furnaces of the Homestead Steel Works has given very satisfactory results. The following description of the gas-cleaning installation is based on actual operating experience. When Carrie blast furnace No. 3 was rebuilt the decision was made to fine-clean all the gas produced by the furnace, because the management wanted fine-cleaned gas for fuel in the stoves and boilers. In order to keep the installation cost as low as possible, the gas-cleaning system was streamlined. All by-pass lines and goggle valves for bypass lines were eliminated from the system. A radical departure from the use of 8-in. tubes in the Cottrell-type precipitators was made by using 12-in. diameter tubes in a single compartment, the single compartment being divided into two units by a single partition wall in the top header. The Furnace Proper A few of the characteristic points and dimensions of the furnace proper are: Hearth diameter.............. 26 ft. o in. Bosh diameter............... 29 ft. 1 3/4 in. The furnace top is equipped with a MC-Kee revolving distributor, the operation of which is electrically interlocked with the skips, bell hoists, and coke-weighing and charging apparatus through a Freyn automatic charging control. The gas leaves the furnace first through four offtakes, 5 ft. 9 in. in diameter, then through uptakes that, are approximately 85 ft. high, which feed into a single down-comer that is 9 ft. in diameter. Dust Catcher The primary dust catcher installed (Fig. I) may be described as a single-cone type. The inlet pipe at the top of the dust catchei is 9 ft. in diameter; it is flared to a conical shape as it extends down inside the dust-catcher shell, which is 35 ft. in diameter, 37 ft. high on the straight side, and has a conical top and bottom. The slope of the bottom is so0 with the horizontal. The cone-shaped pipe inside the dust-catcher shell is 42 ft. high and is 19 ft. 7 in. in diameter at its bottom lip where it releases the gas inside the dust catcher. IN 1949 an orebody containing some 10 billion lb of recoverable rare earth metals was discovered in the Mountain Pass district of San Bernardino County, California.' The following year Molybdenum Corp. of America purchased a number of claims at the deposit and a mill on the property which had been constructed to process the district's gold ores. Average composition of ore from the San Bernardino deposit is less than 0.1 pct Tho2, 25 to 35 pct calcite, 10 pct rare earth oxides, 15 to 20 pct silica, and 30 to 40 pct barite.' Rare earth content of the ore analyzes 50.7 pct CeO2, 4.2 pct Pr6O11, 11.7 pct Nd2O3;, 1.3 pct Sm2O3,, and 34.3 pct La2O3 and others.' By floating the barite and depressing the bastna-site, Molybdenum Corp. of America produced a concentrate that contained 60 to 70 pct rare earth oxides. More than 25 pct of the rare earths, however, was lost in flotation. It seemed likely that a more economical method could be found. At the present time most of the rare earths in the concentrates are converted to rare earth chlorides, which are either fed to ion exchange columns for separation of the individual rare earths or reduced to misch metal. Current investigation shows that solvent extraction may achieve this separation more economically than ion exchange. The study reported here was undertaken to develop an economical method of preparing a pure rare earth nitrate mixture from California bastnasite ore. Results indicated that more than 98 pct of the rare earths could be recovered. Several possibilities were considered for processing bastnasite ore, but only the method outlined in Fig. 1 was investigated. This involved leaching the calcined ore with nitric acid. The nitric acid process is discussed under the following headings: 1) calcination of the ore, 2) leaching of calcine, 3) filtration studies, 4) solvent extraction, and 5) nitric acid recovery. Calcination: Since California bastnasite ore contains 25 to 35 pct calcite and about 10 pct bastnasite, calcination was needed to reduce the violence of reaction with nitric acid. Weight losses of 26 to 30 pct were obtained by calcining the ore at 900°C for I hr or at 800°C for 4 hr. Longer periods resulted in no further weight loss. Leaching the Calcine: When the bastnasite calcine was leached with 30 pct nitric acid for 8 to 10 days, rare earth recoveries of only 45 to 50 pct were

Data on the solubility of hydrogen in iron-silicon alloys are of practical interest, as hydrogen causes gas unsoundness and embrittlement in iron and steel and is also a factor in the metallurgy of cast iron. Zapffe and Simsl have recently demonstrated that in deoxidized iron and steel castings gassiness and bleeding are primarily functions of the hydrogen content of the liquid metal. These authors also suggested convincingly that ordinary melting and casting practice provides several sources of hydrogen for absorption by the metal. Norbury and Morgan2 and Boyles3 have shown that dissolved hydrogen affects the graphitization of cast iron. Schneble and Chipman4 included in a study of the effects of superheating on the properties of cast iron an investigation of the part played by hydrogen. Schwartz, Guiler and Barnett5 investigated the significance of hydrogen in the metallurgy of malleable cast iron. A complete interpretation of investigations of this kind calls for equilibrium values of the solubility of hydrogen in the liquid and solid phases. From the theoretical standpoint, the solubility of gases, especially hydrogen, may reveal some aspects of the nature of liquid metallic solutions. This was implied in the early work of Sieverts6 on the effect of alloying additions on the solubility of hydrogen in copper. Recent work by Bever and Floe7 has shown that in liquid copper-tin alloys the solubility of hydrogen changes abruptly at the composition of the intermetallic compound Cu3Sn. It is of considerable interest to determine whether liquid alloys of iron also have compositions at which the solubility of hydrogen exhibits a discontinuous or otherwise unique behavior. Among the various alloys of iron the iron-silicon system is important because of the presence of silicon in various structural alloy steels, transformer sheets, cast irons and special acid-resisting castings. The various grades of ferrosilicon, finally, cover almost the entire remainder of the composition range. Published information on the solubility of hydrogen in iron-silicon alloys is meager. The first values for pure liquid iron were reported in 1910-191 1 sieverts and Krumbhaar8 and by sieverts.9 They found that 100 grams of iron absorbs 28 c.c. of hydrogen at 1550°C and One atmosphere pressure, and 31 C.C. at 1650°C. MeRcuRy is one of the strategic metals of which the supply has been raised from critical uncertainty to more than enough for essential demands. Work by the Bureau of Mines has contributed substantially to increased production of mercury in the United States and to consequent accumulation of Government stocks. Other contributing factors have been higher prices for mercury and Government loans to operators. The Bureau has undertaken 13 exploration projects, 10 of which have been completed. This work has comprised 28,376 ft. of several types of drilling and 23,798 lin. ft. of surface trenching, and has indicated commercial ore containing 34,800 flasks of mercury and marginal ore containing 26,200 flasks, a total of 61,000 flasks; equivalent, respectively, to domestic production for 8 months, 6 months, and 14 months. As Government stocks are now adequate, domestic production (currently at the rate of 50,000 flasks per year) is gradually being curtailed through Government control of labor and operating supplies. Introduction Mercury was one of the seven metals designated as strategic by the Army and Navy Munitions Board in 1939, when Congress appropriated funds for the investigation of domestic sources of supply of war minerals. The Bureau of Mines immediately started a limited search for strategic minerals, but the first mercury project was not begun until December 1940. The U. S. Geological Survey assisted in the search for cinnabar by contributing information on domestic mercury deposits, preparing maps, and making geological studies of exploration projects. The present high rate of production of mercury in the United States was encouraged by the increase in price to $196 per flask at New York (Fig. I) and Government loans to operators for mine development and plant construction. The Bureau of Mines has issued, for restricted distribution subject to wartime controls, 13 War Minerals Reports on individual mercury deposits (listed in appendix A). In March 1942 it also published a Progress Report of the Metallurgical Division, R. I. 3627, Cinnabar-reduction Plants of the Southwestern Arkansas Quicksilver District. Uses of Mercury Mercury and its compounds have more than 3000 uses. Its principal use is as a catalyst in the manufacture of gases for chemical warfare; the next largest is in pharmaceuticals. Mercury is essential also for: (I) certain electrical apparatus, (2) industrial control instruments at many war plants, (3) munitions, including blasting caps, (4) insecticides in agriculture, (5) antifouling paint for ship bottoms, (6) dental preparations, (7) general laboratory use, and (8) amalgamation of free-milling gold ores.

The Southwest Antioch Oil Field located in T2&3N - R2&3W, Garvin County, Okla., was discovered in February, 1946, by The Globe Oil & Refining Co. and The Vickers Petroleum Co. at their Melinda Gibson No. 1. Oil production was encountered at a depth of 6,525 ft in 14 ft of lower Pennsyl-vanian sandstone. The producing sand, locally called the ."Gibson" or "Third Deese," is a sand bar deposit strung along the west flank of the Pauls Valley uplift in a northwest-southeast direction. The oil reservoir is defined to the east by the edge of sand deposition along the uplift and to the west by the gradation of sand into shale. Within the Antioch Unit, the sand dips from 150 to 400 ft per mile southwesterly and has a pay thickness varying from 10 to 55 ft and averaging 28 ft. Several areas of Gibson production have been developed, including the Katie pool on the south, the Elmore Area of the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool. the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool proper, the Southwest Maysville pool and the New Hope pool on the north. Production extends over a belt 22 miles long by about two miles wide and is continuous except into the Katie and New Hope pools. It appears that drilling will soon prove these intervening areas productive. To March 1, 1950, approximately 18,000 acres have been developed with 450 Gibson wells. It is likely this count will ultimately reach 32.000 acres with 800 wells. RESERVOIR The natural production of oil from the Gibson reservoir is primarily due to solution gas expansion though gravity also plays a part. There is no indication of water drive or evidence that an initial gas cap existed. Gibson oil has a stock tank gravity of 43" API and was saturated at the original reservoir pressure of 2.925 psi. It contained 1,3440 cu ft of gas per bbl in solution and had a high shrinkage of 70 per cent. Connate water amounts to 15 per cent. Reservoir temperature is 130°F. Porosity averages 15.5 per cent and permeability ranges from less than one md to over 1.000. Based on meacurement of 400 core plugs from 15 wells, 78 per cent of the permeabilities fell within the 10 to 1,000 md bracket and averaged l67. Primary oil recovery is estimated at 140 bbl per acre-ft or 22 million bbl for the present 137-tract unit. Due to unitization

It is interesting to note that during the period that has elapsed since the Institute's formation, wood charcoal, anthracite and bituminous coal, as well as beehive and by-product coke, have been used as blast-furnace fuels, that the reign of supremacy of each fuel was associated with specific periods, and that each successive era was marked by a production of pig iron greater in quantity than the one it followed (Fig 1). The transition of the manufacture of blast-furnace iron from charcoal to anthracite and then to beehive coke, and ultimately to by-product coke, is a reflection of the economic limitations of each fuel coupled with availability sufficient to meet the increased demands of each succeeding decade. It is a pattern that has been followed almost without exception in the history of pig iron in every country. CHARCOAL Colonial production of iron relied exclusively on wood char- coal as a fuel, and the iron industry of this count recognizes the important role played by this fuel. Charcoal iron has been available to consumers since the beginning of the organized iron industry in America in 1645, by John Winthrop at Saugus, Mass.,1 and although its greatest use antedates the formation of the Institute, it is still used to some extent. Until about 1840 nearly all of the pig iron manufactured in the United States was made with charcoal, and it continued as a principal smelting fuel until 1855.2 After that time, more pig iron was produced with other fuels, despite the fact that

During the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of interruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publications a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, therefore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.' From the scarcity of articles on the subject, it would seem that the concreting of haulage drifts is still far from being considered general

The development of a geological department as an integral part of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham district, Alabama, in 1908 was an innovation probably unique for any mining organization south of the Ohio River. At that time a few of the oil companies were starting geological departments, but there were no geologists among the larger industrial organizations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. had been a substantial producer of pig iron for many years and was just getting a start in the manufacture of steel products from the pig iron. It had large acreages of coal land, ore land and timber land, but there was lacking the detailed knowledge of the possible mineral resources of much of its territory, and this territory at that time covered an area in the neighborhood of 500,000 acres in the states of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Those responsible for the operations of the mining properties, not being familiar with the kind of help that might be expected from geologic work, were decidedly skeptical of the utility of the work. Therefore it was necessary to develop cooperation with the mining organization, by not infringing upon its functions, and by developing the work in such a manner as to demonstrate to the mining department its practical utility. In the first instance the man responsible for a mining operation is apt to assume the attitude that the geologist is a blockader, because the geologist, unfortunately, is obliged to point out difficulties in the carrying out of mining operations in the way originally planned. He points out the dangers of mining out one coal or metal seam at the ultimate expense of an upper or lower seam, and he develops structural features, such as faults and folds, which call to the attention of the mining operator difficulties in his future operations, which the latter had not anticipated. Eventually, however, the value of having these data became apparent to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., and the operators not only welcomed the geological work and cooperated fully in its acquisition of essential information, but reached the point of asking assistance and advice; and complete coordination of the two activities has existed for many years.

Therefore it was necessary to develop cooperation with the mining organization, by not infringing upon its functions, and by developing the work in such a manner as to demonstrate to the mining department its practical utility. In the first instance the man responsible for a mining operation is apt to assume the attitude that the geologist is a blockader, because the geologist, unfortunately, is obliged to point out difficulties in the carrying out of mining operations in the way originally planned. He points out the dangers of mining out one coal or metal seam at the ultimate expense of an upper or lower seam, and he develops structural features, such as faults and folds, which call to the attention of the mining operator difficulties in his future operations, which the latter had not anticipated. Eventually, however, the value of having these data became apparent to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., and the operators not only welcomed the geological work and cooperated fully in its acquisition of essential information, but reached the point of asking assistance and advice; and complete coordination of the two activities has existed for many years.

QUITE generally an increase in the temperature tends to bring a system closer to ideality. It is reasonable as a first approximation to consider that the excess free energy will vary linearly with the temperature, or: where t may be defined as the "characteristic temperature" of the solution, or the temperature at which the system would become ideal if the results at T were linearly extrapolated. It must be emphasized that consideration of this hypothetical property is an appeal to intuition rather than an established physical concept. The order of magnitude of 7 for dilute solutions will depend on the nature of the solvent; a value of 3000° + 1000°K may be suggested for ordinary metallic solutions. In terms of free energy, entropy, and enthalpy first-order interaction coefficients, differentiation of the above equations with respect to composition leads to The concept of t offers a simple and plausible interpretation of Chipman and corrigan's3 recent empirical correlation between and a for a number of groups of ternary systems 1-24. Single-crystal films of boron have been prepared by thermal reduction of purified BCl3 with subsequent deposition of boron onto oriented silicon substrates. The structural properties of films prepared under various experimental conditions have been determined by light microscopy and "grazing-" angle electron-diffraction analysis. An orientation relationship is proposed for silicon and a-rhombo-heclral boron which can be described as: (111)Si (112)B; [110]Si [110]B ElEMENTAL boron is known to have a high energy gap* and consequently has potential value as a high- *Energy gaps of 1.35 to 1.55 ev1-3 and 2.0 ev4 are reported for ß-rhombohedra1 and a-rhombohedra1 boron, respectively. temperature semiconductor.5 Exploitation of this property, however, has been hampered by the unavailability of pure, single-crystal boron. Two recent symposia6,7 have treated the subjects of purification, crystallization, crystal structure, and properties of boron and provide a foundation for further investigation in these areas. The structure, lattice constants, and observed ranges of stability for four reported polymorphs of boron8°12 are listed in Table I. The rhombohedral structures are generally accepted as true polymorphs whereas the tetragonal structures are believed to be transient. Most currently available single crystals of boron are grown by Czochralski and floating-zone methods. Unfortunately, these crystals generally contain numerous defects and are highly strained as a result of the polymorphic transformations and thermal contractions which accompany cooling. Recently, Armington, Potter, and Tanner13 have reported the formation of single-crystal films of boron on silicon single-crystal substrates through thermal reduction of BC13 by hydrogen. Boron E. T. Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass. formed at temperatures near 1000°C was identified as the a-rhombohedra1 form, consistent with expectation. The present paper describes a continuation of this work with specific reference to characterization of the structural features of the deposited boron films. The ultimate goal of this program is to produce large-area single-crystal films of a-rhombohedra1 boron to be used for electrical and optical studies by other workers. PREPARATION OF BORON FILMS The experimental procedure of preparing thin films is similar to that described by Theuerer14 for the epitaxial growth of silicon by thermal reduction of SiC14 and has already been described as applied to the preparation of boron thin films.13 Briefly, a mixture of BCl3 vapor and dry hydrogen is passed over a heated silicon substrate. Thermal reduction of the BC13 allows deposition of boron on the substrate. The substrates were {111}-oriented, single-crystal silicon. High-purity magnesium single crystals, oriented with basal plane parallel to stress axis, were deformed in tension at room temperature so as to form second-order (1011)- (1012) twins. Investigation by optical and replica electron microscopy revealed that these twins can support very large internal strains approaching 1000 pct and that fracture follows as a direct consequence of these strains. At low strains the basal plane within (10i1)- (10i2) twins rotates with increasing deformation until it becomes approximately parallel to the twin boundaries. This rotation is not consistent with deformation by basal slip in the double twin, but may be rationalized in terms of nonbasal slip. Observations also indicate that basal slip in the primary (1011) twin, prior to second-order twinning, may contribute to this rotation. Deformation markings that are difficult to interpret in terms of slip on previously observed systems were noted in the twin bands. A possible means of rationalizing these markings is to relate them to grain boundary shear. The fracture associated with these twins is thought to initiate by formation of voids at the twin boundaries. These grow into microcracks, with ultimate fracture occurring by tearing of the interconnecting regions. THE significance of deformation and fracture along second-order (10i1)-(10i2) twins in polycrystalline magnesium1-' and many magnesium alloys4 was discussed in a previous paper.5 It was noted that this double twinning mode effectively controls the room-temperature deformation and fracture of magnesium single crystals, oriented with the basal plane parallel to the tensile axis. Reed-Hill and Robertson6 observed that, although these crystals may fracture at a macroscopic strain of less than 1 pct, shear strains up to 1000 pct could occur within (1011)- (10i2) twin bands. They concluded that the fracture was "ductile" and resulted from concentrating the deformation into a very small volume. The present research was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the deformation and fracture associated with these twins. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The experimental procedure involved straining high-purity magnesium single crystals in tension at room temperature. Specimens were oriented so that the applied stress direction was within 2 deg of the [1010] crystal axis. The specimen cross section was rectangular with faces closely parallel to (1210) and (0002). The specimen preparation and testing procedures have been described in detail elsewhere.5 Second-order (1011)- (1072) twins nucleated during straining were studied using optical and replica electron microscopy techniques. For the latter, cellulose acetate-carbon double replicas were employed. Observations were made on the (1210) crystal surface, which is the plane of shear for twins of this type. In addition to the single crystals, some investigations were carried out on longitudinal polycrystalline specimens. These were obtained from high-purity magnesium plate with a texture in which the basal planes of the grains tended to be nearly parallel to the specimen axis. All. polycrystalline specimens were annealed prior to testing in order to produce a coarse grain structure, permitting Laue back-reflection X-ray photographs to be obtained from grains of interest. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS a) Deformation Within ( 101 l )-( 1072) Twins. Fig. 1 is an optical micrograph demonstrating the extent of the plastic deformation that can occur in (1011)-(10i2) twin bands. Notice at the lower left corner of the photograph the large displacement of the dark band (a polishing step) where it crosses the twins. The shear strain in the twin band at this position was computed to be 700 pct, using the ratio of step width to twin thickness. It was previously shown5 that (1011)- (1012) twin bands are often composed of small, separate twins aligned close to the macroscopic habit plane. Fig. 2 is an electron micrograph from near the upper end of the twin band in Fig. 1. This illustrates that the twin habit often does not coincide exactly with the macroscopic band habit, but may be inclined at a slightly smaller angle to the matrix basal plane. Based on laboratory tests conducted with the use of fresh core samples as well as a considerable amount of field data obtained from numerous water floods in northeastern Oklahoma, it appears that for any given oil saturation there is a critical maximum velocity above which the oil-recovery efficiency falls off very rapidly. In effect, when a water flood is operated above this critical velocity, the injected water-oil ratio rises extremely fast, thus shortening the economic life of the flood and reducing the ultimate oil recovery. This critical velocity apparently varies considerably with the percentage of oil saturation of the sand, so that in effect the higher the oil saturation at the beginning of a flood the higher the velocity that can be used successfully. In reviewing several of the earlier floods in the Mid-Continent area, it is concluded that most of the failures were due to two things: (I) too low an oil saturation, such as 30 per cent, and (2) too high water-injection rates, Although considerably more field data are necessary to establish definite limits, it would seem that the proper field injection rate for a 330 by 330 or 440 by 440-ft. spacing varies from approximately I bbl. per foot of sand per day where the oil saturation is as low as 30 per cent up to 5 bbl per foot of sand per day when the oil saturation is as high as 45 to 50 per cent, Introduction With secondary recovery by water-flooding receiving more and more attention throughout the industry, a greater working knowledge of multiphase flow under field conditions becomes more and more necessary A great deal of research has been carried on in highly idealized laboratory conditions, from which certain trends have been indicated, but with few exceptions no direct application to field use has been reported. widely varying conclusions have been drawn from the mass of idealized laboratory experiments and often this divergence apparently was due to the neglect of connate or interstitial water. Since interstitial water is such an important factor in water-flooding operations, it then follows that any laboratory flooding experiment must necessarily take it into account; and since it is difficult to set up laboratory models to allow for interstitial water, the next best procedure is to use fresh core samples for such tests. Even this procedure has its difficulties, inasmuch as it is possible to run only one flooding test on each sample, as each sample differs somewhat in character from all other samples. WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.

With the advent of water-flooding into active commercial usage in half a dozen areas in the Mid-Continent, the process passes the experimental stage and joins other methods and processes now in use which have been found suitable in one oil field or another in securing a more profitable production than has existed heretofore. The use of the air-gas lift, acidization, pressure maintenance and repressuring have presented their problems in economics and engineering during their introduction and extended application. When a new field is discovered or attention is turned to an old producing area in which these methods have not been considered, it is to be expected that these problems again arise. While some information is available as to the results obtained by water-flooding in a few localities in the Mid-Continent, the extrapolation of the sand data on which the results are based, for even generalized use in other areas and fields in the region, is hazardous. It is precarious to assume that the same physical condition will obtain in a sand over more than small, special areas. This paper is concerned with a brief presentation of such data as are available to the authors on existing operations, a survey of the region and extent to which application of the method seems most likely to be made, an estimation of the crude reserve existing for such operations, suggestions as to the importance of core analysis in guarding against uncontrolled floods and its usefulness in predicting ultimate recoveries, and comment on some of the economic phases involved. These subjects, as concerned with water-flooding in the East (notably Bradford, Pennsylvania), have been discussed in detail in the literature and are generally well known. Especially is this true of discussions of the mechanical equipment and various lease layouts and development patterns for water-flooding.
