The present struggle for economic and industrial supremacy by the Communist world is against the United States, its main target, and the other Free World nations. The basis of industrial power is minerals, so the Communist nations are building up mineral production within their borders, often regardless of costs, and are acquiring quantities of mineral products from Free World countries for future use. They are contracting for additional supplies and advancing funds for the development of these quantities. A number of the less developed mineral producing countries of the Free World are being infiltrated by Communists and Communistic influence. This situation is well known, but as yet little has been done to oppose these activities or to awaken the public to their seriousness. The Communist countries are still far behind the Free World Nations in production of many essential minerals. But, shortages are being made up from Free World nations in exchange for petroleum, manganese ore, chromite and other products. Restrictions on shipments of strategic materials to Communist countries have not been maintained.

Hazards such as vibration, dust emission and fragment projection can result in an area called the Danger Zone being set around a blasting site. Traditionally Danger Zones have been set solely on the basis of consequences (e.g. based on the maximum distance of rock projection or expected ground vibration plus a defined safety margin). Advances in risk assessment and its growing acceptance as a safety management tool have led to the setting of Danger Zones based on both consequences and frequency of occurrence. This allows distances to be optimised on the basis of acceptable risk levels rather than the potential consequences of infrequent events. "The measurement of error in assays collected as part of a mineral exploration program or mining operation historically has been undertaken in a variety of ways. Different parameters have been used to describe the magnitude of relative error, and each of these parameters is related to the standard measure of relative error, the coefficient of variation. Calculation of the coefficient of variation can be undertaken in a variety of ways; however, only one produces unbiased estimates of measurement error: the root mean square coefficient of variation calculated from the individual coefficients of variation.Thompson and Howarth’s error analysis approach has also been used to describe measurement error. However, because this approach utilizes a regression line to describe error, it provides a substantially different measure of error than the root mean square coefficient of variation. Furthermore, because regression is used, Thompson and Howarth’s results should only be used for estimating error in individual samples, and not for describing the average error in a data set. As a result, Thompson and Howarth’s results should not be used to determine the magnitudes of component errors introduced during geochemical sampling, preparation, and analysis.Finally, the standard error on the coefficient of variation is derived, and it is shown that very poor estimates of relative error are obtained from duplicate data. As a result, geoscientists seeking to determine the average relative error in a data set should use a very large number of duplicate samples to make this estimate, particularly if the average relative error is large."

Beaches contain the residue of eroded rocks which have resisted weathering, and it is common to find in all beaches some of the harder, heavy minerals. The natural sorting action of waves and winds tends to concentrate the heavy minerals into banded deposits.The value of such deposits is extremely variable. Even amongst the more concentrated deposits, the principal minerals, in the vast majority of cases, are magnetic, titaniferous magnetite and other forms of iron oxide, which, in the present state of mineral economics and technology, are of little or no value.Valuable minerals of fairly common occurrence in beach sand deposits are rutile, zircon, ilmenite, monazite and chromite, and each of these minerals, as well as others of less common occurrence, is obtained from beach deposits in various parts of the world.Along a stretch of 300 miles of coast from Coff's Harbour in New South Wales to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, occur unique concentrations of heavy minerals. The principal minerals which occur are rutile, zircon and ilmenite, and for some years these deposits have contributed half to three-quarters of the world's consumption of rutile and zircon 1, ,2. The only other notable beach sand concentrations in Australia are at a number of places in the southwest of Western Australia, where deposits containing highgrade ilmenite are being developed.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a procedure for the design of an arch canopy for use in rehabilitating a high-roof-fall area. Only dy-namic line loading of an unbackfilled arch canopy at its crown is considered, and the procedure does not account for an asymmetrical loading condition. The evaluation of whether an arch canopy is suitable for a particular installation depends on many variables, including in-mine conditions and the engineering properties of the structure. However, a general evaluation can be based on a comparison of the arch's maximum crown deflection and a prescribed allowable crown deflection. The design procedure is based on the concept that when an arch canopy is sub-jected to impact loading at its crown and deflects from its unloaded state to maximum crown deflection, the structure absorbs strain energy, both elastic and plastic. As a result, this strain energy can be calculated from a static load-displacement diagram for the structure. The significance of this design procedure is that it gives mine personnel an analytical tool to select an arch canopy to meet the dimensional and functional requirements of a mine entry and a prescribed allowable crown deflection.

THE Jacksonville plant of Humphreys Gold Corp., operating under leases from National Lead Co. and Rutile Mining Co. of Florida, recovers rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite from an ancient beach deposit containing about 2.5 pct of these minerals in combination. The location of the plant is unique, being situated about ten miles from the center of Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by a thriving suburb. Two four-lane highways pass within 1 ½ miles of the plant. An expressway now under construction will pass over the tailing pile, within 500 ft of the mine office. The elevation at the plant site is approximately 50 ft above sea level. This is one of two mines producing titanium minerals and zircon in Florida. Another mine is also operated by Humphreys at Starke, about 50 miles southeast of Jacksonville. Research on the solid-fuel reduction of Knob Lake iron or was conducted to upgrade lean and high-grade ores and recover metallized products suitable for ironmaking or steelmaking. The program included bench-scale tests plus a number of continuous campaigns in a 34-inch by 36-foot rotary kiln. In the laboratory, metallizations in excess of 90 percent were achieved by reduction of crushed ore with lignite at 950° C. Subsequent grinding (to minus 200 mesh) and wet magnetic separation yielded concentrates analyzing less than 3.0 percent SiO2 and more than 90 percent Fe. Virtually complete recovery of the iron occurred. During early continuous tests the crushed ore created a serious ringing in the kiln which was solved by balling the fines with bentonite. Unfortunately, at this temperature (950° C) the bentonite militates against the concentratability of the metallized product. For example, a run on direct-shipping ore produced concentrates of 89.5 percent Fe and 4.5 percent SiO2. At 500° C the adverse effect of bentonite disappeared and concentrates of 88.4 Fe and only 2.5 percent SiO2 resulted. However, with comparable feed r Los, the metallization dropped to 73 percent.

The principal dirnensions of the chimney were fixed as follows: Height from formation to coping, 328 ft. 8 in.; inside diameter concrete shell, 13 ft. Gin.; inside diameter of the 4~-in. brick lining. 11 ft. (j in. ; shell thickness above flue inlet at a point 39 ft. above formation, 1 ft. 8in.; shell thickness at coping, 6 in. That is, the inside of chimney is cylindrical, wldst the outside is gradually stepped inwards with of 1 in. and less until the shell is 6 in. thick only at the top. With these dimensions in mind, it will be seen that some close thought was necessary to ensure a satisfactory of fonn which could be kept rigid and plumb to a height and at the same time provide safe working conditions for the labourers employed.FOUNDATIONSThe spread base of the chimney is 45 ft. in diameter, and foundations were carried down to a depth of 8 ft. 6 in. below natural surface into good hard clay which was known to be the best foundation obtainable in the vicinity being capable of withstanding, when dry, a load of 3 tons to 4 tons per square foot, whereas dead load is 1A tons per square foot and the maximum load expeeted under the most severe wind condition is 2 tons per square foot to ensure the foundation being kept dry and unaffected by ground water, the site was surrounded by a ring drain at a distance of six feet from edge of concrete foundation and at a minimum depth of one foot below bottom of concrete. Open-jointed pipes were laid in the bottom ofthe drain and graded to a pipe drain with outfall clear of the site.

The Ok Tedi Project is now a high production open-pit porphyry copper mine located in the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea (PNG). At present, total daily production is 190 000t of ore and waste. Large scale drilling and blasting has only been in operation since 1988, prior to which all material was removed by ripping and dozing. This paper reviews the steps taken over the last 12 months in establishing a more efficient drilling and blasting operation and highlights the significant reduction in powder factor. These improvements have been achieved largely through the introduction of air-bags, controlled pattern expansion and an overall focusing on the operation by involving consultants, ICI's technical service and internal departments.

Contractual site plans are implemented for executing pile foundations (5 x 5) at segmental concrete bridge. Project schedule demands have forced the contractor to find out the most economical procedure in achieving the goal. This paper presents a site management technique which is applied by the Contractor. This was found to be fruitful and as much as 60% saving was gained.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the effect of shape and size on strength of geologic materials. The results indicate that the shape effect is caused by the development of confining pressure at the interfaces. The linearization of the obtained formula is of the same form determined by experiments. The size effect is attributed to the fact that the geologic materials contain discontinuities in the form of fractures, bedding planes, and cleats. The maximum reduction factor for the size effect is the one-sixth power of the volume of a cubic test specimen. The results of this work are particularly useful in determining the strength of coal pillars in underground mines.

"The few previous observations of the effect of turbulence on limits of inflammability have been made on a small scale in turbulence produced either by a fan or by movement of the mixture.By a suitable amount of turbulence from a fan the lower limit of methane was 5 per cent as compared with 5 per cent observed for quiescent mixtures in the same vessel.3 With a streaming movement of the gas mixture within the range of speed from 35 to 65 centimeters per second (69 to 128 feet a minute) the lower limit was approximately 5 percent,4 For a quiescent mixture of ethane the lower limit was 3.10 per cent ethane, but with fan running at a moderate speed a 3 per cent mixture exploded.5The object of the tests herein reported was (1) to determine the lower limit of natural gas in a mixture of natural gas and air Which would be ignited and propagate violently when the turbulence was produced by explosives fired from a cannon into the mixture; (2) to observe the behavior when the mixture contained less than this low limit; and (3) to determine how turbulence produced by a fan affects thin limit.Four series of tests were run, three of which were to determine the effect of different sources of ignition: Tests with (1) an electric igniter; (2) 3F black blasting powder stemmed with 2 pounds of dry fire clay stemming used to ignite the mixture, and (3) 40 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite unstemmed. The fourth was made to study the effect of turbulence produced by a two-speed electric fan, using an electric igniter as the source of ignition.In both series of tests with explosives, charges of 50 and 200 were used to determine the effect of increased quantity of explosives on the lower limit of natural gas."

Shortly after Denny, Robson, and Irwin published their first paper in 1937, on the prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium, experiments were begun on the practical application of the discovery.It was thought at that time that aluminium powder, to be effective in aluminium therapy, would have to be intimately admixed with siliceous dust at the latter's source. There followed several years of experimental work underground, during which the application of aluminium powder was tested in:(1) Speakers on machine columns, vibrated by drills.(2) Vials placed in drill holes to be blasted.(3) Both homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture with explosives.(4) Packages with tamping.(5) Compressed-air lines.(6) Special compressed-air ejectors for use while drilling and after blasting.(7) The discharge of ventilation fans.(8) The filters of respirators.It was concluded from this research that any adequate method of introducing aluminium powder into a mine atmosphere would require too much extra gear, supervision, and aluminium p;wder, and would interfere unduly with underground routine.Later, animal experiments by Denny, Robson, and Irwin2 showed that aluminium powder provided effective therapy when inhaled independent of silica dust. Therefore, some means of surface treatment was deemed more practical.APPARATUS USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALUMINIUM PROPHYLAXIS SAMPLINGA basic requirement was a method of sampling to assess accurately the particle-size concentrations of dispersed aluminium powder. Konimetry, though regularly practised at McIrityre, was inadequate for the research in mind. On the other hand, the efficiency of the thermal precipitator was recognized as being very high. A pressurizing system was designed and built to apply a radial pressure of 5.000 psi to rock samples. Samples of the Bradford, Weir and Kirkwood sandstones were subjected to radial pressures parallel and perpendicular to the bedding in the system and the changes in conductivity, porosity and permeability were deter-mined. Asymptotic decreases in conductivity, porosity and Klinkenberg permeability were observed over the 0- to 3,500-psi range. From these data, the increase of formation factor over the same range was calculated. The cementation exponent expressed in the Archie equation was found to increase with pressu,re. The rate of change varied from formation to formation. Only small differences were observed for samples taken parallel to the bedding as comnared to those taken perpendicular to it except for the Bradford sand. Above 3,500 psi the data are not good enough to tell if the properties continue to fall-off asymptotically or in a different manner. A possible explanation for the probable litnit of the asymptotic rate around 3,500 to 4,500 psi is that this represents the maximum pressure which the formations have unrdergone during their geological life as a result of burial. INTRODUCTION For many years measurements have been made in the laboratory of the properties of oil-bearing sandstones with little consideration being given to whether these properties had been changed when the samples were moved from their original position in the ground to the laboratory. Relatively little has been reported in the literature on the effect of pressure on the properties of sandstones. The changes in permeability for eight typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure (0- to 15,000-psi range) was presented by Fatt and Davis' in graphical form. In 1953 Fatt' also reported the relationship between porosity and overburden pressure for four typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples (0- to 5,000-psi range). Fatt later described the changes of formation factor and porosity of 20 typical oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure changes (0- to 5,000-psi range) giving the values of the coefficients and exponents in the Archie' equation, and the more general Winsauer equation', where C, k and m are empirical constants, F is the formation factor, and + is the porosity. During the experiments of this investigation the core was contained in a neoprene rubber sleeve as shown in Fig. 1. It was held between two steel end members which were mounted in a steel cylinder. This paper will discuss the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation on the Dulles East and West Automated People Mover Tunnels and Station projects. The elements of the system included drilled soil nails and rock anchors with reinforced shotcrete to the excavated face. We will discuss the geotechnical characteristics, design and construction considerations, loading criteria, construction techniques, schedule constraints, and performance of the support of excavation system. In consideration of the conference theme, there will be a discussion of the application of the real-time instrumentation monitoring program. The project team worked to design and install approximately 710,000 square feet of shotcrete and 19,000 soil nails/rock anchors as well as excavate over 720,000 cubic yards of rock materials within 15 months and in such a manner as to minimize the disruption to airport passengers and operations.

Graduate education is an integral part of the Center's research program. The scope of. work and the duration of each research project is calculated, in part, by taking into consideration the needs of the graduate research program and graduate training. Full development of student involvement, as demonstrated by the research practicum which is offered to qualified senior undergraduates at Penn State University and is designed to acquaint them with research methods and techniques and inform them of the opportunities available in this field. and the fulfillment of graduate program requirements are of the utmost concern. The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University have accredited mining engineering curricula and rank among the schools with the largest enrollment in this area in the nation. The number of undergraduate students enrolled in mining engineering at Penn State and West Virginia University account for nearly 20%, of the total undergraduate enrollment in this discipline in schools across the United States. The Pennsylvania State University. West Virginia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Minnesota, and Michigan Technological University, have granted a total of thirty-five (35) doctorate and masters degrees which can be directly attributed to research conducted in the Center.' Of these graduates, fifteen(15) have found employment in the mineral sector of the economy, i.e., in private industry, with government agencies, and at various universities, worldwide. In addition, a number of those graduating with masters degrees are currently pursuing a doctorate degree.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13.1 km overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design ended up with 5.4 mps belt speed, 1000 mm belt width to convey 1350tph, and 7 mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30 mtpa (million ton per annum). Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4 200 tph satisfactorily.

The Golden Cross mine commenced production in December 1991. Both open pit and underground mines produce 1000 tonnes of ore per day. Mining techniques are discussed along with results and variations to proposed methods of extracting the ore.
