"Many ores are upgraded to produce auriferous sulphide concentrates (principally pyrite) which are not amenable to direct cyanidation. Often these refractory gold-bearing concentrates contain undesirable elements such as arsenic, antimony, etc., which present environmental and/or processing problems. The pretreatment techniques most often considered for processing these concentrates prior to cyanidation include roasting, pressure oxidation, chemical oxidation, pre-aeration, and recently, bacterial oxidation. In this paper, the technical performance and economics of bacterial pre-oxidation vs the classical roasting approach for treating a specific auriferous pyrite concentrate are compared. The results provide flow sheets, preliminary operating and capital cost estimates, and rates of return for the two processes and demonstrate the potential advantages of bacterial pre-oxidation. IntroductionThe increased attention that gold has received in the last ten years has prompted mining companies to look for lower grade orebodies. Many of these low-grade ores do not respond well to conventional direct cyanidation recovery techniques. As free-milling ores decline, gold is sought in refractory environments which, ultimately, drive up the treatment costs.There are a number of reasons for a gold ore to be termed refractory, most of which can be identified by thorough mineralogical examination. The mineralogical occurrence of gold can, to a great extent, impact the method by which the ore is treated and, consequently, the capital and operating costs. Gold in a refractory ore can often occur as discrete particles locked in a host of silicate or carbonate gangue, or associated with sulphides or sulphosalts. Depending on its particle size, gold can be liberated and recovered by mechanical size reduction such as regrinding. This approach is most effective for gold in the 10 - 50 micron range. Gold can also be associated with clay, iron hydroxides, or other minerals which tend to coat the gold surface and inhibit the penetration of the cyanide solution, resulting in poor plant recovery. Because of their resistance to cyanide dissolution, gold tellurides and other refractory gold minerals are also responsible for losses to the tailings. For these reasons, it is paramount that the mineralogical occurrence of the gold be thoroughly and accurately determined before selecting a final process flowsheet."

The trend in gas well testing has been to rely more on the early-time flow data of drawdown and buildup tests than on stabilized flow tests. The stabilized testing methods often are not adequate for complicated modern gas reservoirs because many of these reservoirs have extremely low permeabilities and the transient flow period of a well test can last for days or weeks. It has become common to augment the flow capacity of gas wells by hydraulically fracturing their producing formations. In deep reservoirs the induced fractures are generally vertical and tend to follow a single plane of weakness. The presence of a vertical fracture at the wellbore complicates the transient flow behavior of a low permeability gas well. The flow is further complicated when turbulence occurs near the wellbore. Russell and Truittl published transient drawdown solutions for vertically-fractured liquid wells. They developed methods of drawdown and buildup testing utilizing these solutions, which were based on numerical simulation. Clark2 applied the basic Russell-Truitt solutions to analyze fractured water injection wells by falloff tests. Field examples were given to substantiate the method of analysis. The Russell-Truitt solutions and well testing methods can be extended to gas well flow. Millheim and Cichowicz3 presented the drawdown equations for *Now with Scientific Software Corp., Denver. ideal gas flow, including the effects of formation damage and turbulence. Two actual field cases were presented, both of which exhibited extensive fractures and turbulent flow. For the pressure range of these well tests, the use of ideal gas equations was acceptable. These field cases were significant in being the first published data showing the occurrence of turbulence in fractured gas wells. We, also, observed such cases in practice. Our purpose here is to extend the theory of fractured gas well testing to the flow of real gases. To determine the effects of wellbore storage and turbulence on well test interpretation, we developed a finite-difference model to simulate well test conditions. Since gas wells usually are widely spaced and have high compressibility, the emphasis has been put on the early transient behavior before the effects of the outer boundary are noticeable at the wellbore. The Mathematical Model The geometry of our mathematical model is similar to that used by Prats.4 The well is centered in a circular uniform reservoir. A vertical fracture of infinite flow capacity penetrates the formation and passes through the wellbore. The wellbore itself is not important. Fig. 1 shows a sketch of the problem. The effects of solidification rate (0.4-26.1 K/s) and alloying elements on the cast microstructures of aluminum alloy 5182 have been investigated with directionally cooled laboratory-size ingots. The alloying elements examined included Mg (3.6-4.7 wt.%), Mn (0.35-0.75 wt.%), Fe (0.11- 0.42 wt.%), Cu (0.03-0.25 wt.%), and Si (0.11-0.28 wt.%). These reflect the chemical compositions of AA 5182 end stocks with high recycled used beverage container (UBC) content. For a given chemical composition, the average dendrite cell and constituent phase particle size decreased with increase in average solidification rate. In general, within the level investigated, Mg did not have a significant effect on the types, volume fractions, and average sizes of the constituent phase particles. However, increase in Mn, Si, Fe, and Cu increased average sizes and volume fractions of the constituent phase particles.

The properties, characteristics and phase structure of chamotte refractories produced with the usage of mullitecorund chamotte and caoline have been given. The comparison of new refractory C-45 obtained by us and refractory C-43 produced by traditional method has done. The physical-chemical properties of refractories is reviewed. The visual porosity, density and pore characteristics of given refractories was calculated. It is established that C-45 has the less gas permeability then C-45 that gives melting units more stability. The petrographical microstructures of refractories have been done. The main phase structures and their influence on refractories properties have been observed. It is established that refractories with mullitecorund chamotte adition has more advantages then refractories gained by traditional method and can be applied to melting units.

The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

Controlled graphitization has become known as a practical method for improvement of wear resistance and machining properties in steels. In this paper, the effect of heat treatment on microstructure of CK45 steel has been investigated. Austenitising was carried out at 920°C for 5 hours. Besides, isothermal transformation was conducted at 750°C in the time range of 1-20 hours. The microstructure of the steel considerably changes by this heat treatment process which exhibits the effects of temperature, appropriate austenitising duration and isothermal transformation. Conducted experiments show a suitable distribution of semi-spherical graphite particles especially on the surface of the steel. Also, analyses demonstrate that the amount of formed graphite in the austenitising temperature 920°C is more than graphite in single heat treatment temperature of 750°C.

Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

EARLY workers in the field have established that the diffusion of nitrogen follows normal diffusion laws. Concentration-penetration data from layer analyses of reasonably pure iron specimens nitrided in an atmosphere of CO-NH, are given in the literature,' and were utilized to calculate diffusion constants for nitrogen. The diffusion of nitrogen in y-iron may be represented approximately by the equation D - 1.07x10-' e-:".'m'"'r The diflusion coefficients, D, given by this relation represent mean values, since carburization occurred simultaneously with nitriding. The rate of diffusion in a-iron has been determined from calculations based on data obtained by measuring the internal friction of samples at each of several frequencies and temperatures.' The expression for the diffusion of nitrogen in a-iron derived from these experiments is D= 1.4x10-1 e-it tudent Increasing carbon content decreases the diffusion of nitrogen in a-iron.3 Oxygen, either dissolved or combined, has been shown' to exert a marked influence on the diffusion of nitrogen from a nitriding atmosphere. D values increase rapidly with increasing amount of dissolved oxide in the metal, but diffusion is completely inhibited if preliminary oxidation has produced the slightest trace of iron oxide on the surface. Diffusion coefficients have also been calculated from permeability and solubility data,' but these values are of questionable accuracy since the boundary conditions assumed may not actually exist. Experimental Method The method selected for determining the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen in a-iron in the present investigation was the so-called fractional saturation method. This method consists of heating the specimen in an atmosphere of H2-NH8 mixtures of known composition for a predetermined time. Following this treatment, the specimen is analyzed for nitrogen; and the diffusion coefficient is calculated from a known relationship of the fractional saturation, time of diffusion, and dimensions of the specimen. This relation is based on a solution of Fick's second law and assumes that the surface of the specimen immediately reaches a given concentration which remains constant during the diffusion anneal. Tabular solutions are available4-5 and provide the relationship between fractional saturation and the quantity \/Dt /a, where D is the diffusion coefficient in cm2 per sec, t is the time of the diffusion anneal in seconds, and a, in the present experiments, is the half-thickness of the slab specimen in cm. The method is adequately discussed elsewhere.9-10 Material The material for this study consisted of 3/32 in. thick (0.24 cm) carbonyl iron plate. The major impurities in this iron are oxygen and carbon, which are readily removed by long time high temperature treatment in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. In order to reduce the diffusion anneal time for saturation runs, some of this material was rolled to a thickness of 0.015 in. (0.038 cm) prior to the hydrogen treatment. The Charkhan Salt Lake area of the Chaidamu Basin in West China is characterized by soft super-saline soils with very high contents of soluble salts. From the engineering point of view, these saline soils are saturated, liquid-plastic and moderately to highly compressible lean silty clay and clayey silt. In the natural state, their allowable bearing capacity is only 60-80 kPa. As to the saturated lean silty clay, liquifaction in case of an earthquake of intensity 7 on the Modified Mercalli scale is considered likely. In order to improve the geotechnicai properties of the saline soils, stone colomn stabilization by means of vibroflotation was performed. As the geotechnicai properties of the soils are closely linked with the amount and composition of the soluble salt content, saline water with chemical content similar to that of the saline soils was used as flush fluid in the course of hole-making and column-forming, with a view to keeping unaltered the amount and composition of the salts in the soils and thereby precluding reduction in or loss of their strength. Systematic monitoring on the behavior of the foundation soils before and after the treatment and comparison of the numerical data thus acquired have shown good technical results, testifying to the effectiveness of stabilization of soft superealine soils by vibroflotation. As a result of the treatment, the allowable bearing capacity was increased one to two fold, accompanied by elimination of the liquefaction potential.

The Liberty Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina is a curved, cable-stayed, pedestrian bridge with primary support provided by two towers. The bridge is part of the Falls Park redevelopment. The bridge was originally designed to be supported on drilled piers. Alternately, the bridge was supported on a combination of micropiles and anchor piles because of difficult access and subsurface conditions. The use of micropiles and anchor piles led to improved construction scheduling and reduced costs. Micropiles were used to resist compressive loads. Anchor piles were used to resist tensile forces and to eliminate excessive settlement of pile caps into underlying fill during pre-stressing. This paper describes the site history, bridge construction, site and subsurface conditions encountered, and the decisions that led to support of the bridge using micropiles and anchor piles and foundation construction.

Concentrating Line 6 just went down again. The control room operator checks the graphic display. Only one piece of equipment shows an alarm. Clicking on the ball mill icon, he discovers the culprit was the low flow lube switch. The flow looks okay now, but it is the third time this week the switch has stopped the line. Maintenance is called, the switch replaced and the line is up running again. Sending the right person to the right spot immediately can save hundreds of hours of downtime every year. This paper discusses the principles behind implementing smart First-Out Fault Detection to dramatically reduce equipment downtime in new, or existing control system architectures. Methodologies are presented to maximize the system benefits, while minimizing development costs. Case histories are presented for a number of successful implementations in mineral processing plants.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) development continues to take on not only larger diameters, but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar have required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunneling machines that can safely excavate the tunnel in an efficient, cost-effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This article reviews the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied. The world?s growing population and rapidly proceeding urbanization are boosting an enormous demand for new and high-capacity infrastructures to secure the mobility of goods and people. Densely populated areas face the challenge of providing efficient traffic infrastructure such as a modern public transport system. At the same time, the maintenance and modernization of supply and disposal structures for water, sewage, energy and communication are essential. Last but not least, are supra-regional transportation routes such as long distance water diversion schemes. All of these projects are as demanding and are characterized by a tight time schedule. In this context, the demand for efficient tunnels for traffic and utility lines is increasing, as new infrastructures often leads underground because of limited space above ground. Also, tunnels are the obvious choice to cross natural barriers like mountain ranges. To handle the complex and variable geological conditions and other constraints, such as low overburden, high water pressure or long tunnel drives while facing increasing demand of a quick completion of a project, mechanized tunneling sets standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection in traffic tunneling projects as well as in the trenchless construction of utility tunnels. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to master various geological and hydrogeological requirements. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant improvement of the mechanized tunneling process.

The completion of the first two open hearth furnaces in the new No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla will increase Australian production of steel by 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.The paper gives an outline of the essential features of open hearth design and auxiliary equipment required to operate the two modern open hearth furnaces at present being installed.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for steel required by Australian secondary industries led to the decision to construct and operate No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla. Two basic open hearth furnaces of the most modern design are under construction and it is anticipated that these units will be commissi.oned in September 1956. Australian steel capacity will thereby be increased by approximately 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.PLANT LAY-OUT AND CONSTRUCTIONIn the design and lay-out of this plant the emphasis has been on efficient material handling with simplicity of design and operation. Overseas methods were studied and these studies, together with experience gained at Newcastle and Port Kembla open hearth shops, enabled this plant to be built to a standard which compares favourably with any other in the industry.Initially two furnaces, each of 2,75 tons capacity, have been built, but provision has been made in. the design and lay-out to enable expansion to six furnaces.The location of the new plant in relation to the existing units will be noted in Fig. 5. THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, minus what is taken up by the rivers and streams is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area of the district is 2,417,299 acres. The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea and Waiwakaiho. "It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. For such a circumstance, an expert system can become a very valuable tool to assist the operator in taking the most appropriate and timely action.A forward chaining expert system module has been developed for this application. The module is based on Level 5 ObjectTM software. It is graphics oriented and user-friendly. Training requirement is minimal.ForewordThis paper has arisen out of work carried out by YLS Associates and Falconbridge Limited as part of a contract between Falconbridge and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Government of Canada, on the application of expert systems in mining operations.IntroductionThe electrical bill charged to large consumers by Ontario Hydro is based upon two elements: demand and energy consumption. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific- indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1971 at 5 million tons valued at $200 million, averaging $40.00 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, calcium carbonate, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface smoothness, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 3rd edition of Industrial Rocks and Minerals, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses.
