Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. On Feb. 11, 2005, more than 20 mining professionals gathered in Elko, NV for a day-long round-table discussion on heap leaching. Attendees included project managers, operators and environmental professionals. They represented 10 mining organizations. Knight Piésold sponsored the special event. Its seven representatives included three staff members from the company’s Elko Operation, and one each from its Denver, Cajamarca (Peru) and Vancouver offices. The roundtable format was chosen to allow people from the mining industry to share ideas and experiences in an open forum. Rather than presenting prepared talks, spontaneity was encouraged. This resulted in a lively and enjoyable discussion.

A Fábrica de oxigênio da AMT produz gases O2 e N2, utilizados no processo de produção de aço. Neste processo de fracionamento de ar, existe um compressor de ar que é responsável pela captação do ar atmosférico. Este compressor é do tipo centrifugo de 4º estágios de compressão, fabricação Hitachi, e tem capacidades de vazão de 114.000 Nm³/h e pressão de descarga 5.4 Kg/cm². Em Novembro de 2012, foi realizada inspeção no compressor e identificado trincas nas pás do impelidor do 4º st e perda de espessura de parede das pás do impelidor do 3º st de compressão. Houve perda da confiabilidade de operação do equipamento, sendo necessária uma ação para correção do problema. Depois de identificado a causa raiz das trincas,foi decidida a compra de dois novos impelidores com modificações no material para aumentar a resistência à corrosão. Na aquisição dos novos impelidores havia duas possibilidades: 1) Adquirir novos impelidores junto ao fabricante original do equipamento; 2) Adquirir novos impelidores por processo de engenharia reversa (levantamento de desenhos da peça desgastada para fabricação de uma nova) em conjunto junto com empresa especializada. Este trabalho irá mostrar os critérios e considerações que levaram a AMT decidir pela compra de novos impelidores por “Engenharia Reversa”, bem como, suas vantagens e riscos assumidos.

The application of similarity analysis derived from regional geochemical mapping data to the location of Ni-bearing intrusions was tested in southwest Finland, where a well-known nickel belt is situated. Samples of till from the vicinity of the Vammala and Kylmakoski Ni-Cu deposits, which were collected independently of the Geological Survey of Finland's regional geochemical mapping programme, were used to provide geochemical modelling data. The data consist of the aqua regia-leachable concentrations of 20 elements from the less than 0.06-mm fraction of glacial till. The variables used in the similarity analysis were selected on the basis of a factor analysis in which the method of oblique rotation was used. A hierarchical clustering of the modelling samples produced two main groups. The first group was described as the "nickel deposit environment model" and the second as the "nickel deposit location model". The data for the standardised variables were compared sample by sample with the model data by similarity analysis using the Simana program with a cos theta measure of pattern similarity. The nickel deposit environment model delineated the known Ni belt and indicated an extension to the east. The nickel deposit location model identified target areas of reasonable size with the greatest potential for Ni ores within the nickel belt

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself— only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions. THE GAMBLE The fact that prospecting is a gambling business reminds us at once of the elementary rule known as the law of gambler's ruin. I hesitate to mention so simple a rule in this company of experts. This rule expresses the rather serious chance of going broke when the odds for success are small, merely by a normal run of bad luck regardless of the long-run expectations of gain. The only sure way of avoiding this special risk of gambler's ruin is to have enough capital, and the will, to continue the play many times and thus ride out the inevitable runs of bad luck. For example, if the probability of success is one in ten for each venture, there is a 35 pct chance that ten successive ventures will fail in a row. But if one has the capital to continue the play through a run of 100 failures, then the chance of gambler's ruin is only 5 in 100,000. Almost any management, I suppose, would be under terrific pressure to cease the play during a long run of bad luck. To continue to prospect under such circumstances requires great confidence in the premises, and a firm conviction in the long-term expectation of profit. There is evidence which I shall mention that in the future even the strongest companies may not have the necessary capital to prospect on the ideal scale. The obligations of the European Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards, the so-called Seveso II Directive, became mandatory within the E u ropean Member States February 3, 1999. Explosive products have been included within the Seveso II Directive, in the categories of substances capable of generating a major accident. In addition to taking “all measures necessary to prevent major accidents,” explosive manufacturers are also obliged “to limit their consequences for man and the environment.” However, for explosives in particular, no pro c e d u res, nor specific re f e rence values for damage calculation, are given either in the Directive or in the corresponding Italian Legislation, “Ministry of the Environment decree of 20 Oct. 1998.” This article presents a simplified but scientifically rigorous approach for the first approximation calculation of the effects on the surrounding area following an accidental explosion. A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. Laboratory scale equipment was developed to recover zinc as oxide fume from granulated lead blast furnace slag. The cyclone furnace process is characterised by high treatment rates combined with continuous and independent operation.Results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant pilot plant scale trials being undertaken.INTRODUCTIONSince granulation of lead blast furnace slag started at Port Pirie in 1921 the stockpile of this material has increased to nearly 5 million tons which averages 17·5 per cent zinc by weight. Although a number of processes for recovering the zinc have been examined, economic considerations indicate that a slag fuming process is likely to be most suitable.In the conventional slag fuming process zinc is extracted by injecting pulverized coal and air into a molten slag bath. By maintaining a suitable air to coal ratio the oxidised zinc contained in the slag is reduced to metal. Volatilization of the zinc is followed by reoxidation in the gaseous phase with the addition of further air above the bath. The zinc oxide fume so produced is collected by normal gas cleaning methods.By examination of the thermodynamics of this process Bell, Turner, and Peters (1955) determined the zinc oxide activity of the slag over the duration of the fuming cycle.A combination of high temperature and high carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide ratio was found necessary for rapid zinc elimination.Since melting of the slag is an essential step in the slag fuming process, only two treatment methods appeared possible at Port Pirie until recently...

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Electric-pulse disintegration is a mineral separation technique that liberates all mineral grains from any igneous or metamorphic rock irrespective of its lithology or grain-size distribution. The normal mechanical crushing of whole-rock samples is replaced by the rending effect of an explosion, produced by applying an electric current from a high-voltage power source. A voltage greater than the 100 kV necessary for the electrical breakdown of rock samples is achieved by using capacitors charged in parallel, but discharged in series. The sample sits in a water bath and the rapid distribution of electric pulses leads to an explosion which occurs preferentially along grain boundaries of the sample. Individual, undamaged mineral grains can be recovered in their original shape and form regardless of grain size. Examples are given of the liberation and concentration of important accessory minerals from different rock types. The examples show the recovery of diamond from two types of non-kimberlitic host rock in Popigai and Kumdykol in Kazakhstan and platinum group minerals associated with chromitites from the Konjdor intrusion and sulphides from intrusions in the Kola Peninsula in Russia

In mining industries, materials loading and handling costs represent a significant component of the total (capital and operation) costs. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading and haulage system with the lowest total cost. The optimal size and number of equipment calculation are very important task for mining engineering because loading and haulage equipment are major proportion of open pit mining cost. Capital and operating cost are considered in objective function with respect to interest rate, insurance and tax in non-linear form. Shovel and truck annual productivity constraint, fleet matching constraint and number of truck per shovel constraint are incorporated in this optimisation problem with continuous variables. This formulation will yield total cost minimisation per hour and good accuracy compared to previous methods.

At the treatment plant of the Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, the zinc concentrates, with water, are pumped out to a more or less level area, and stored in dams to dry by drainage and evaporation.In-the construction of these dams a clay bank is first thrown up around the proposed dam site. The concentrate and water mixture are then run in from the perimeter, the solids being continuously shovelled up to increase the bank height, while the clear water is drained off at the centre and returned to the treatment plant.These dams vary in size up to 57,000 sq. ft. in area; when completed the banks are about 12 it. high, and the capacity for the largest dams is about 350,000 cub. ft., say, 20,000 tons.The survey office is called upon for a monthly survey of these dams, generally three of which are in process of building or refilling. The puggy nature of the material prohibits walking beyond the bank of the dam, therefore the following method of estimating concentrates was evolved. No originality is claimed, but as the need is for a true survey, and the results have shown the accuracy of the method, a description is warranted. The dam site is first laid out into 10-ft. squares with a theodoliteand 150-ft. steel tape, the outside lines being placed about 15 ft. from the clay bank - 15 ft. is the maximum convenient distance from the bank for working with the levelling staff mentioned later.As the dam is rarely rectangular in plan, the outside points pegged out are not always the corner of a square, but are placed to give the greatest convenience in later work, that is to say, there may be triangles and irregular figures. A numerical model is developed for predicting the load transfer and settlement behaviour of vertically loaded, bored cast in-situ piles. Based on analysis of full-scale pile tests, closed-form equations are formulated to uncouple the shaft and base transfer resistance components of the pile/soil system. Appropriate parameters are introduced to take into account: (i) the shaft resistance distribution in unlined and partially lined piles, (ii) the effects of ?soft toe? (voided toe pile) behaviour on base resistance development. For convenience, an interactive computer program has been developed in Matlab? with a user friendly interface system. The program can be applied to predict the complete load-settlement curve and axial force distribution in bored cast in-situ piles if reliable soil test data are available. To demonstrate its validity, the proposed method is applied to 4 test piles, which are also analysed using two previously published methods: (a) elastic solution method and (b) layer discretisation method. Methods (a) and (b) above are based on load transfer (t-z) and finite element models respectively. It is shown that the proposed method yields axial force distributions and load-settlement curves that are in good agreement with the observed pile test data.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. "Due to the increase of automotive vehicles, available parking spaces become a new type of limited resource in central cities of China, especially in those old districts without visionary urban planning. Additional mechanical parking in underground space is an efficient solution to provide parking spaces under the situation where the urban space is constrained. Shichahai district is an old protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong (alleyway) and Quadrangles (courtyard house). No spaces are available for car parking on the ground and all vehicles are parking in Hutong without order currently. The local government plan to do renovation work for this district and improve the residential environment. Several innovative solutions are studied including parking in deep shafts, parking under existing buildings by under-pinned method, parking under buildings by covered excavation method, parking under roads built together with utility tunnel etc. 5000 difference types underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. Project examples are also introduced in this paper. INTRODUCTIONCar parking resources are very limited in central cities, especially in old districts without planning for increasing automotive vehicle volume. Traffic get worse when cars park on the side of the roads or move slowly to find parking spaces. Investigation shows the normal (parking space/ automotive vehicle volume) ratio is about 1.2 in most big cities such as New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong, while this ratio is only 0.5 in Beijing. One solution is to move cars out of central cities. But there are still huge parking requirements for the citizens living in central cities. Shichahai district is an historic protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong and Quadrangles (refer to Figure 1 for project location). No spaces are available for car parking on ground and all vehicles are parked in Hutong without order currently. The local government had a plan to do renovation work of this district and improve the residence environment. 5000 different types of underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. One project designed and to be constructed by Zhongyan Technology will be introduced in this paper. Other innovative solutions will be introduced briefly as well."

"Molybdenite flotation at the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex has been studied as a function of pulp potential controlled using two types of sodium sulfide (mineral and chemical origin). Air and either plant or laboratory nitrogen was used as a flotation carrier. Potential measurements were taken in the rougher cells as it was proved to be vital for molybdenite flotation. Flotation test with reducing potentials between -525 and -575 mv gave the highest molybdenum recovery (93%) and the lowest copper recovery of between 4 to 15% can be achieved. These potentials did not change considerably by adding increasing amounts of sodium sulfide. At more oxidizing potentials, i.e. more than -450 mv, the recovery of copper increases while the recovery of Molybdenite drops.INTRODUCTIONThe average copper ore feed grade to the Sarcheshmeh flotation circuit is typically set at about 1.2% Cu. to be delivered to processing unit is set at 1.2%. There is no control of molybdenum (Mo) which usually varies between 0.01 and 0.04%. During concentration, a Cu-Mo concentrate is produced by one stage of roughing, one stage of scavenging and two stages of cleaning. Final concentrate contains 0.5% of Mo and 32% of Cu while the particle size is 90% under 42 microns (325 mesh). Because of the high grade of Mo in this concentrate and economic interests, a molybdenite flotation circuit plant was built in 1984. This plant was designed to treat 1432 tons of Cu-Mo concentrate (on dry basis) and consists of one stage of roughing followed by seven stages of cleaning. After dewatering the concentrate contains 53.7% Mo which is dried and shipped overseas.The majority of molybdenite production worldwide comes as byproduct of copper porphyry ores. The Mo grade typically varies between 0.01 and 0.06% and accompanies chalcopyrite and chalcocite. Due to the hydrophobic nature of molybdenite, it can be floated along with copper sulfides. Thus the overall concentrate of Cu and Mo contains 0.2-1% of molybdenum as well as 20-42% of copper. To separate the Mo, Cu and Fe minerals, depressants are used. The most important of which are sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide, Anomal D, sodium cyanide, ferropottasium and ferro-cyanide. The first three regeants have been extensively used for successfully treating porphyry ores [1]. In the molybdenum plant of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex only sodium sulfide has been used to date."

Results of experimental work on the in situ combustion process were first published in this country in 1953' when Kuhn and Koch described results of a three-well test in Jefferson County, Okla. Shortly there-after Grant and Szasz2 described field studies in Nowata County, Okla., in which several modifications of the basic combustion process were investigated by injection of various oxidizing gas mixtures other than air. In the past five years speculation concerning this method of oil recovery has continued, with a number of interesting papers on various aspects of in situ combustion appearing in the literature3,4,5,6,7. However, only one of these' provided actual engineering information on pattern-type field experiments. The primary objectives of the Oklahoma three-well test were to check operation of specially designed electrical ignition equipment and evaluate problems associated with initiation of combustion in a natural oil sand reservoir. Immediately following successful completion of this test in the Pontotoc sand, plans were activated for a second field experiment to be conducted in the same sand a short distance away. The objective of this second field test1 as to establish a relationship between field observations and information derived from laboratory experimentation and computations. Secondary objectives of the test were to develop operating tech- niques and define operating problems, and to obtain information that would assist in the economic and engineering appraisals of the process. Careful planning was required since this test was designed with the hope of providing basic information on the characteristics and operation of a combustion drive. It was necessary to include test facilities which would not only permit precise control and measurement of the process variables but would also provide sufficient flexibility of control to insure that variables in the combustion process could be studied during the course of the test under a wide range of conditions. In order to accomplish these objectives elaborate instrumentation and several control wells were included in the design of the test installation. This type installation was felt to be well suited for an experimental study, but was in no respect intended as a counterpart of a commercial-scale operation. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY WORK An important objective of the field experiment, as stated previously, has been to obtain reliable data on operating variables which might be compared with similar data obtained in laboratory combustion tests. The value of successful correlations between quantities that can be measured in the laboratory and those obtained in a full-scale commercial venture has been well established for other industrial processes. The difficulty of following a process underground should make such correlations even more essential here. Also. approaching the field test phase of development of in situ combustion, it was considered desirable to precede design of test equipment with laboratory combustion studies under a variety of conditions to establish likely ranges of variables. These included temperature, air injection rate, frontal advance rate and produced gas composition.
