The effect of bubble size and concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficients of single air bubbles in distilled water has been investigated. Bubbles of a certain size range rise considerably faster than Reynolds number-drag coefficient relationships predict, whereas a small amount of frothing agent reduces their terminal velocity. The rapid velocity at which bubbles rise in distilled water appears to result from slip at the boundary and from circulation within the bubbles. Surface-active agents retard bubble motion through prevention of both circulation and slip at the boundary. A surface tension concentration gradient helps maintain bubble sphericity. HE gas phase is one of the indispensible in-gredients in flotation operations. Flotation depends on the collision of an air bubble and a mineral particle in a pulp and their ability to remain in contact long enough for adherence to take place. Before it is possible to understand the mechanics of air bubble-mineral particle encounter, it is necessary to learn more about the nature of bubbles themselves before collision with a mineral particle has taken place. To date, little work has been done on air bubbles in flotation systems. In 1945 Fahren-wald' presented a study of the role of frothers on air bubbles and on aeration in flotation, and recently Wark and Sutherland' discussed the work of Rosenberg- in relation to flotation. The research reported in this present article was undertaken to investigate systematically the effect of bubble size and the concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficient of single bubbles in distilled water. Most of the work is concerned with the effect of a-terpineol on bubble motion in water, but studies were made with potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium amyl xanthate. Experimental Method and Materials: To obtain free bubble rise and reduce wall and surface effects, the investigators used a tank of 5½x5½x30-in. internal dimensions, filled with water to within 4 % in. of the top.' The tank was made of acrylic plastic so that the walls would have good optical properties. Distilled water, which was re-distilled in a block tin still and saturated with air before each test, was used in all the experiments. All solutions were made with reagent-grade chemicals. During each experiment the water was at room temperature, and during the course of an experiment the temperature did not fluctuate more than 0.5°C. Since the experiments were performed over a period of six months, the temperature varied between 25° and 27°C. [For almost 2 decades the Bureau of Mines has been Interested in converting solid fuels to liquid fuels. Small-scale laboratory investigations were carried on for a number of years.4/ This work wad expanded substantially under authority of Public Law 290, approved by the 78th Congress on May 5, 1945. As part of the. broadened program, coal-hydrogenation demonstration plant was designed and erected at Louisiana, Mo., where: hydrogen-manufacturing and compression equipment, shoes, electric power, and other utilities and facilities were available from a discontinued wartime ammonia works . The plant uses the direct -hydrogenation or Bergius process, but the process differs from prewar European practices in many respects. Many noteworthy improvements h eve bean made, particularly by substituting automatic instruments for manual control of process variable's, in line with modern American processing practices. The over-all objective of the demonstration plant is to bridge the gap between laboratory end commercial-scale operation by furnishing cost and engineering data to develop a synthetic liquid-fuels industry when it proves technically and economically justified. Fitting into the over-all program, specific objectives o early runs were to (1) train personnel who had no experience with this type of operation, (2) break in the installed equipment, (3) obtain successfully integrated operation of the entire plant, and (4) work towards obtaining data on the hydrogenation of coal-tar oil and a typical low-ash coal. In beginning fan integrated operation, it is common practice to operate and obtain reaonably smooth performance of each unit before the over-all operation is undertaken. The first part of the plant completed was the refinery, consisting of several fractionating systems, a stabilizer, and a chemical treater.]

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise, was established in the year 1976 to develop mine and plant facilities to produce 7.5 Mtpa of high-grade iron ore concentrate at Kudremukh. The mine and plant facilities were commissioned in 1980. In view of high demand for iron oxide pellets in iron and steel industry worldwide and as a diversification activity, a pelletisation plant of 3.0 Mtpa capacity was commissioned in the year 1987 at Mangalore for production of high-quality blast furnace and direct reduction grade pellets for export. The pellet plant capacity has been increased to 3.5 Mtpa by technological improvement which included installation of roll press for quality and productivity improvement. In addition, the pellet capacity is being increased to 4 Mtpa by the addition of Shaft Pelletising Furnace plant.

The polymerisation of silica is found to interfere with thickening of leach pulps at Risdon. Hydroxyl ion and fluoride ion are catalysts for this reaction. Stability may be obtained by the presence of aluminium or ferric iron.INTRODUCTIONAt Risdon it has been a matter for satisfaction that, although the concentration, of silica in leach solutions is appreciable, it has ,given relatively little cause for anxiety.However the margin of safety is small and some intermittent difficulty in thickening leach residues during the last few years has prompted a further investigation, certain parts of which are described here since they may be of general interest.Leaching and ClassificationThe method of leaching which is practised at Risdon has been described in, two previous articles, by W. C. Snow (1936) and S. W. Ross (1949) to whiCh the reader is referred for detail. Continuous leaching is practised, the circuit solution flowing through five air agitated pachucas in series, to tlie first of which calcine is added. The circuit solution, which also enters the first pachuca, consists of spent electrolyte from, the electrolytic cells and contains 90 -gm. of free sulphuric acid per litre. About 80 per cent of the solublezinc oxide is extracted from the calcine in the first pachuca, at a pH value of 1-1 (7 gm.H2S04/1 at 55 to 60°C. In the later pachucas the leaching rate decreases sharply. The leach pulp which leaves the 'last pachuca contains an average of 17 gm. of free acid per litre, corresponding to a pH of 1.7; but, owing to variations in extraction, the end point fluctuates between 2.5 and 0·3 gm. free acid per litre (pH:> 1·5 to 2.5). O efeito de memória de forma tem como principal objetivo a recuperação da forma por meio de aquecimento acima das temperaturas críticas de transformação. Fitas da liga Ti43,5Cu37,8Ni18,7 foram preparadas através do processo melt spinnig com velocidade da roda de 21 m/s e 63 m/s. As fitas foram tratadas termicamente numa temperatura de 700°C por 15 minutos em forno e resfriadas ao ar. A caracterização das fitas foi feita por calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC) e análise por difração de raios X (DRX). Foi observado que com uma menor velocidade de rotação da roda (21 m/s) a fita apresentou-se totalmente cristalina, e quando aumentou-se a velocidade linear da roda para 63 m/s a fita apresentou-se completamente amorfa. Após o tratamento térmico todas as fitas apresentaram as transformações martensíticas e auteníticas. Observou-se que a velocidade da roda tem grande influência nas temperaturas de transformação, chegando à variação de aproximadamente 7°C. O tratamento térmico remove todos os defeitos produzidos pelo processo de solidificação rápida e produz um rápido crescimento de grão, favorecendo ao aumento das temperaturas de transformação.

State mining regulations in Queensland stipulate that a mine be provided with an earth installed on surface and that all underground equipment that needs to be earthed should be connected via a copper conductor to this surface grounding point. The regulations further require that all exposed metal surfaces in underground substations be connected to an earth. In a study of earthing conditions at Mount Isa mine it was found that the physical anchoring of metal work at substations (with rockbolts and associated steel mesh) also provides an excellent electrical connection to the country rock. It was established that not only is the mine's earthing system grounded at numerous underground locations but also that such anchor points offer, in general, a path to ground with lower resistance than does the legally required grounding point on the surface. It is recommended that metalliferous mines should utilise a multiple-earth system and not a run earth connected to a single, above-ground earth point

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from mine wastes is one of the most challenging environmental problems currently facing the mining industry. When mining wastes have the potential to produce AMD, the effluents produced have to be managed to meet existing regulations on water quality. The LTA impoundment (property of Barrick Gold Corp.) located near Malartic, Quebec, contains sulphide tailings that have the potential to generate an acidic leachate. The closure option selected by Barrick was to construct a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE), in which the moisture- retaining layer is made of non-acid-generating tailings. Since its construction in 1996, the cover has been monitored to evaluate its performance. For that purpose, various parameters have been measured, including the volumetric water content and matric suction in the different layers of the cover. This paper presents some of the main results from the monitoring program that started eight years ago. The results show that the cover is able to maintain a high degree of saturation in its moisture- retaining layer, acting as an oxygen barrier. The actual performance of the CCBE on the flat surface of the 60 ha site is better than expected at the design stage. The only concern with the LTA cover is the effect of slopes that can reduce the performance of the CCBE during dry periods. However, these effects appear only for short periods of time, and are limited to very localized areas, so that they do not significantly affect the overall performance of the CCBE and its ability to limit the production of AMD.

Sluiceboxes can provide a much higher concentration ratio than most other gravity concentrators (up to 50 000:1) at very high overall placer gold recoveries (greater than 99 per cent). They are also very reliable, inexpensive and simple to operate. This combination is very difficult to beat and explains why the sluicebox is still the most important placer gold concentrator in northwestern Canada, Alaska and the rest of the world. A sluicebox is a rectangular fl ume containing riffles on matting, through which a dilute (<12 per cent) slurry of water and alluvial gravel flows. Sluiceboxes are actually centrifugal concentrators with settling velocity playing a minor role in gold recovery. Due to their higher density, gold particles tend to segregate to the bottom of the slurry flow where they form a streamline that is diverted by a low pressure zone into a riffle. Under ideal conditions, this ribbon of slurry will be overturned as it flows down the rear of the following riffle and will continue fl owing in a circular path to form a vortex. At the bottom of this vortex, centrifugal and gravitational forces combine to drive gold particles into or beside the matting. To remove the gold concentrates, sluiceboxes are shut down and the riffles and matting are taken apart and cleaned. The slurry velocity provides the energy that powers the vortex. If the velocity of the slurry is reduced through overloading with solids, insufficient water flows or shallow gradients it may not sustain a full size vortex. If the riffles are too close, too far apart, too tall, or if there is not enough energy available to the vortex, the vortex will not be formed properly and gold recovery will be reduced. If the slurry velocity is too high, extreme turbulence and the resulting scouring will also cause gold losses. Testing sluiceboxes with conventional sampling and evaluation techniques is very costly, time consuming and problematic. Most placer gold ores contain a very small number of gold particles in a large volume of pay gravels. Sluiceboxes can lose coarse gold particles. The presence or absence of one of these particles in a tailings sample can lead to high unpredictable errors (nugget effect) even when large sample volumes are processed with care. Every time conventional samples are upgraded, additional errors are introduced due to the inefficiency of recovery equipment. Nuclear tracer tests are more accurate, faster, cheaper and safer than conventional sampling. In 1989 through 2002, the recovery efficiency of dozens of sluicing systems was determined by mixing radioactive gold particles (tracers) into the feed streams of dozens of placer mines in the Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alaska and Guyana. Four distinct sizes of nuclear tracers were used and their recovery was related to the design and operational characteristics of the individual sluiceboxes and their pay gravels. At clean up, scintillometers were used to detect the very low level X-ray and gamma ray radiation emitted by these tracers and locate them in the sluice runs. The effectiveness of any given section of riffles was easily diagnosed by the presence or absence of tracers. At every mine the gravel feed rates, water flows, equipment dimensions and riffle performance were measured. After the gold tracers were removed from the fi nal concentrate and counted, the concentrate was sieved and weighed. These gold recovery, weight and sieve data were used to calculate the quantities and size distributions of the gold particles in the original pay gravels and those lost in the tailings. The expired tracers were stored in a lead lined container until their radioactivity was near background levels (about two months). The standard errors from these radiotracer tests were estimated from binomial probability theory with the equation: SE = {(n + p + q) ^ 0.5}/n. Where n was the total number of radiotracers added, p is the proportion recovered and q was the proportion lost. Each overall recovery estimate would be within one standard error of the true recovery value (14 times out of 20) and almost always within two standard errors of the true recovery (19 times out of 20). The maximum standard error with 100 tracers was five per cent and occurred when the recovery approached 50 per cent. With higher recoveries, standard errors usually ranged from one to two per cent.

O presente trabalho apresenta um comparativo da utilização de diferentes condições de tratamento térmico para soldagem do aço 80-HSLA. Neste experimento realizou-se soldagens multipasse utilizando o processo de eletrodo revestido, em diferentes condições de tratamento térmico adicionando ou retirando o pré ou pós-aquecimento de soldagem, a fim de se obter o comparativo dos efeitos nas propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas, encontradas em cada condição. Após a soldagem foram realizados ensaios não destrutivos para identificação de descontinuidades e ensaios mecânicos caracterizadores. Os resultados dos ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos foram conclusivos para afirmar que quaisquer tratamentos térmicos podem ser dispensados para a soldagem desse aço e, principalmente, o tratamento de pós-aquecimento de soldagem, e que a aplicação ou não desses tratamentos não alteraram significativamente a microestrutura do material e nem as suas características mecânicas.

Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The people and Greenland’s history The population of Greenland is 57,000. Twenty percent are Europeans, mainly of Danish decent, while 80percent are native Greenlandic or mixed Greenlandic-European. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

Two types of Mt Tom Price hematite iron ore from Hamersley Iron P/L were tested using a Humboldt Wedag Jones P40 wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The parameters tested were magnetic intensity (7000, 9000 and 11 000 Gauss), groove plate type (8R and 12R) and gap width (2.5 and 1.8 mm). It was found that at 9000 gauss magnetic intensity, reasonably high-grade and recovery in the concentrate were obtained. At 2.5 mm plate gap width, the 12R groove plate performed slightly better than the 8R groove plate. Further testwork is recommended to optimise the magnetic intensity, feed flowrate and pulp density, wash water pressure and flowrate with 12R and 8R groove plates at 2.5 mm gap width.

"The Brunswick Mine ore requires fine grinding to achieve liberation of minerals. With 25mm slugs as the grinding media in the ball mill, there was a limitation of a P80 of 25 microns on the CuPb regrind circuit. Results from pilot plant testing showed that the separation efficiency could be increased through fine grinding with a P80 of 15 microns.Options considered were the capital expenditure for new fine grinding equipment such as a vertimill or the use of the present ball mill equipment with smaller media. The Wheelabrator Allevard Enterprise (WAE) millpebs product was chosen because it was a smaller media with a distribution of steel pellets between 5 to 12 mm.With millpebs the grinding product was reduced in size from a P80 of 25 microns to a P80 of less than 19 microns. The power draw to achieve the finer grind was 13% lower while the media consumption was 57% higher.The millpebs grinding media was also tested on the zinc regrind mill. The purpose of the trial was to understand what the media consumption and power draw would be with the charge lowered to achieve an equivalent grind as obtained with the slugs. The media consumption was approximately the same and the power draw was reduced by 30%.INTRODUCTIONThe Brunswick Mine ore is a complex Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag sulphide ore with the grain size of the minerals varying from submicron blebs to particles up to several mm in size. The ore is ground progressively finer in stages. The first step of grinding occurs in the SAG mill circuit. The product sizing 80% passing 95 microns is fed to the CuPb prefloat stage (Cormier et al 2002). The tails from the prefloat is then further ground to a P80 of 35 microns for the CuPb rougher flotation. The final liberation for the CuPb circuit takes place in the CuPb regrind circuit. The regrinding mill further liberates the cleaner scavenger concentrate, second cleaner tails and third cleaner tails. The reasoning for the progressive grinding is to achieve fine grinding without having galena over ground due to its high specific gravity that preferentially sends it to the cyclone underflow."

"NVI Mining’s Myra Falls Operation is a 4,000 mtpd copper/zinc flotation circuit with by product gold of ~28,000 ounces per year. Gold recovery has historically averaged 40-55%, however, a portion of this was recovered in the zinc concentrate and received poor payment. Two Knelson CD-30 Concentrators have been operating in the grinding circuit since 1992, with gravity recovery averaging about 2-5% over that time period.The Myra Falls gravity circuit was one of the very first hard rock mining installations operating in the world with automated Knelsons. The mine has employed a unique and unusual upgrading method for the Knelson concentrate that had never been evaluated as to its efficiency. Recent Gravity Recoverable Gold Testing by McGill University, and mathematical modelling of the Gravity Circuit by Knelson Gravity Solutions indicated the gravity circuit was not living up to its potential. Myra Falls Personnel changed the upgrade system-operating regime, and a complete gravity audit of the grinding circuit was carried out, with the results confirming the initial suspicions. Gravity recovery increased from 5% to 15%, with overall gold recovery improving by 5%.INTRODUCTIONNVI Mining operates a 4000 tpd mine and mill complex on Vancouver Island. The milling circuit consists of open circuit rod milling, closed circuit ball milling, gravity recovery, copper flotation, zinc flotation, and tails disposal. There are two milling circuits, “A” circuit, and “B” circuit."

Mission Bay is a 300-acre reclaimed site in San Francisco, California, that is currently being redeveloped. Plans include new neighborhoods, parks, a new University of California, San Francisco, research and development campus, a biotechnology campus, and commercial office buildings. New infrastructure is being constructed throughout the site, consisting of utilities, pump stations, and roadways. Previously, Mission Bay was a part of the San Francisco Bay. Reclamation of the shallow bay coincided with the booming development in San Francisco in the 1880s and continued through 1920. Subsurface conditions are extremely variable throughout the site. The stratigraphy generally consists of 5 to 45 feet of fill, up to 140 feet of weak, compressible clay (?Bay Mud?), dense sand, stiff clay, and bedrock of the Franciscan Complex that has been encountered 5 to 210 feet below the ground surface (bgs). Geotechnical issues related to these subsurface conditions include liquefaction, lateral spreading, settlement, and adequate foundation support. This paper presents case studies of the geotechnical aspects of design and construction of several buildings in Mission Bay, highlighting the similarities and variability in the subsurface conditions and the different conclusions and solutions developed for each project. The case studies will include: 1) a building supported on steel H-piles where the depth to bearing varies from about 70 feet bgs in one half of the site to 165 feet bgs in the other half; 2) a building supported on precast, prestressed, concrete piles bearing in a thick, very dense sand layer; 3) a building with over 100 feet of Bay Mud supported on 120- to 180-foot-long PCPS concrete piles driven to bedrock adjacent to buildings supported on steel H-piles driven to bedrock; and 4) sites where auger pressure grouted displacement piles (APGD) and Tubex piles were installed. Case studies will include results of pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing and static pile loads tests, where performed.
