The relationship between neural network (NN) performance and the parameters that form the architecture of the neural network is complicated. This paper studies an issue that is still controversial—the effect of the number of neurons and number of hidden layers on NN performance. This paper tests if the above parameters affect network performance when the NN is trained according to the quick stop strategy. It was determined that the number of neurons did not have any effect on the NN performance for a single layer or a double layer network. It was also found that the training error and calibration error could be poor indicators of the prediction correlation coefficient.

Low carbon 11.5% chromium stainless steels are finding increasing use in industry as square or rectangular tubing material for the construction of structures by welding. During processing, resistively welded circular pipes are bent into square or rectangular shapes. During this process longitudinal cracks can sometimes develop atone of the inner corners of the section. An investigation has shown that the processing of round into square tubing with very sharp corners can cause excessive cold working at the inner corners of the squared tube. This, together with the high tensile residual stresses and a susceptible microstructure due to the presence of grain boundary carbides, can result in brittle cleavage cracking. Measures that can be used to reduce the problem are described.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a flammability study of plastic ventilation ducts. Six rigid 16-in-diam fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducts from five manufacturers were examined using laboratory-scale, large-scale, and full-scale fire tests. The laboratory-scale tests included the American Society for Testing and Materials E162 radiant panel test, the E2863 oxygen index test, and the standardized small-scale flammability test (S3FT) developed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and replicated by the Bureau of Mines. Ten-foot lengths of the same ducts were also subjected to a large-scale vertical fire test, and 20-to 30-ft lengths were tested in a full-scale in-mine fire test at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. The data from the laboratory-scale radiant panel test and oxygen index test indicated that the ducts were fire-resistant, However, five of the six ducts failed the S3FT and vertical fire tests, and four of the ducts failed the full-scale in-mine tests with flame propagation rates that ranged from 3 to 10 ft/min. The results indicate the need for improved fire-resistant plastic ducts. The good agreement between the S3FT re-sults and the vertical and full-scale tests show that the S3FT provides a good indication of the flammability of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting under realistic fire conditions.

This paper shows the potential of a new computer model, using the Glowe-Tech (GT) Tonnage Analyzer program to compare drilling and blasting results. This model uses the crushers and conveyors as measuring tools in aggregate quarries in the USA and Canada. All data is collected using commercially available kilowatt transducers and an analog input/output automation module. There are two areas of measurement used to compare results. The first area is the tonnage moved by key conveyors to show the split in products produced and the actual rate of production. If belt scale readings are not available then the Glowe-Tech Tonnage Analyzer can be used to convert kilowatts from the conveyor motor to tonnage. The second is the tons of rock crushed per kilowatt hour of energy consumption by the primary and secondary (optional) crushers. This modeling process works best if blasts are mucked and crushed in sequence. There are many other variables such as crusher types, crusher settings, screen sizing and actual geology in the pit that can influence the results, however if variables can be standardized then definite trends can be seen when comparing drilling and blasting results

An analysis of the wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. On the basis of information developed in this study, the factors of major importance in reducing soluble loss are: filter wash, wash zone size, filter capacity, filter feed pulp dilution, blow back, filter cloth, water to repulp, water to primary wash, water to feed pulp and thickener underflow. The wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit has been used in many hydrometallurgical plants to separate solute from leach solids. As many as 20 to 30 plant operating variables determine the performance of the wash circuit and hence the soluble loss. The complex relationships of these variables, with each other and with soluble loss, make the evaluation of their effect on mill performance difficult. An analysis of this type of circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. THE CIRCUIT The diagram in Fig. 1 represents the operation of the wash thickener-two stage filter circuit. This circuit provides for counter current, cross current or for a combination of countercurrent-cross current operation. The feed pulp stream, J, is intended to include any solution or water, other than primary and secondary filtrate, which enters the wash thickener. Except for filter washing, the operations in the circuit are simple mixing operations which can be described by material balance. The concentration of solute in the filtrate and cake solution after application of wash liquor cannot be described by simple material balance. Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

This article focuses on the appropriate application of subsurface investigation methods for transmission structures, which are typically designed to resist lateral rather than vertical loads. Currently, the three methods used most often for the subsurface investigation of transmission structures in the field are the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), the Cone Penetration Test (CPT), and the Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT). Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages, and each is more applicable to some scenarios than to others. To gain a better understanding of these test methods and the implications of using them for various kinds of applications, a comparison study was conducted in the field in Maryland, for three boring locations. Each boring location was explored using each of the three tests as stated. The results of the tests and lessons learned are presented and compared, and these comparisons show that the three test methods agree on the majority of the findings. The results from each test method were also used to derive key parameters such as the soil friction angle for given foundation designs considered in order to establish a clear basis for comparison. Recommendations for performing transmission structure subsurface investigations are made in order to optimize the use of each method and thereby optimizing subsequent foundation designs. INTRODUCTION For overhead transmission structures, the most important structural requirement for determining the foundation design differs from the requirement for other structures such as buildings and bridges in accord with the conditions the transmission structures will need to withstand. In addition to the ability to bear a given vertical load consistent with its use, the foundation must bear lateral loads arising from wind and other weather conditions. The foundation types used most often for overhead transmission monopole structures include concrete drilled pier, vibratory caisson, and direct embedment. In order to determine an appropriate and even an optimum foundation design for any given set of conditions, an appropriate subsurface investigation method or approach is needed. Currently, the standard penetration test (SPT), the cone penetration test (CPT), and the flat dilatometer test (DMT) are the three most commonly used subsurface investigation methods.

"Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A. G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids, and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue-gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 220°F for the calcining step and a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat-recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat-efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. tons/day of alumina heat consumption figures of less than 1·400 B.T.U./lb Al203 g were achieved.

This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.

A bulk mineral analyser (BMA) suitable for the determination of Cu or Ni in bulk ore samples has been developed at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories. This analyser, which uses the nuclear resonance scattering technique, is highly specific to the wanted element. The technique has previously been extensively field tested for copper at Mount Isa, Queensland.The present paper discusses the field trial in 1982 of a commercial prototype BMA for nickel. The trial was undertaken at the lateritic nickel mine at Greenvale, Queensland. The BMA and its shielding, together with a laboratory spectrum analyser, were sited in the sample shed adjacent to the workings. Two hundred and thirty-eight ore samples taken directly from the mine blastholes were assayed by the BMA. The average mass of sample was 12 kg, metal contents varied from 0.2 to 3.5 wt/per cent Ni and 4 to 43 wt/per cent Fe and free moisture varied from 11 to 55 wt/per cent. A measurement took 10 min to complete, although this time could have been reduced at the higher nickel grades. The r.m.s. deviation between BMA and chemical assays was 0.09 wt/per cent nickel. Iron and bulk density were also determined by the BMA, r.m.s. deviations being 1.7 wt/per cent and 0.03 g/cmJ respectively. Similar results could be expected from a BMA in routine industrial use at other nickel mines.

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi&apos;s South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault&apos;s classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst&apos;s cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook (Volume III) contains overall injury experience for coal mines, both anthracite and bituminous, coke plants, petroleum and natural gas, peat, and asphalt and related bitumens (native); metal mines, their metallurgical plants, including ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous reduction plants and refineries; nonmetal mines; nonmetal mills; sand and gravel operations; slag (iron blast-furnace) plaints; and stone quarries and their related pants. Volume I of the yearbook contains a chapter showing injury experience and employment data treated separately by metal mines, nonmetal mines, quarries and their related plants, metallurgical plants (ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous reduction plants and refineries are shown separately), nonmetal mills, sand and gravel plants, and iron blast-furnace slag plants. Volume II contains injury and employment experience in the fuel industries (coal, coke, petroleum and natural gas, asphalt and related bitumens (native), and peat. Injury and employment data are submitted voluntarily for the mineral operations through an industry canvass made by the Bureau of Mines, except for the coal industry, whose reports are mandatory. Information published in this chapter is the result of this canvass. Figures presented in this chapter for 1961 are preliminary except for anthracite, peat, coke, petroleum and natural gas, asphalt and related bitumens, and slag. These preliminary data, with the exception of bituminous coal, are a summation of reports received by May 31, 1962, from the operators showing their injury and employment experience. Estimations of injury and employment experience are not included in these preliminary data.

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Fundamental principles of trend surface analysis are briefly reviewed. Recent analyses of several granite masses illustrate the method of estimating the quantitative regional composition and also variation trends. Mineralogi-cal, bulk chemical, and other quantitative variates can be employed. Such results should improve gravimetric surveys (etc.) relying on correction terms based upon estimated rock composition. For the first time realistic estimates of the mean composition of rock bodies can be made with the aid of trend components. Deviation maps hold promise for delimitation of disseminated mineralized areas. Deviations comprise residual "anomalies" after removal of trend components. In petrogenetic work such deviations have been shown to reflect local influences (e.g., contamination of magma by assimilation of xenoliths or country rocks of the envelope). Similarly, mineralization should be reflected as deviations standing out from background trends. Actual examples are given. Present results largely involved projection of data onto a horizontal plane, but if sufficient data are available use of three spatial coordinates increases accuracy for prediction in "unexposed" areas. Regression analysis shows that statistical correlations between variates for regionally distributed specimens are often strong (particularly with percentage data). Hence, in preliminary surveys more easily determined variates may sometimes be employed to gain first estimates of the distribution of components more economically significant. The sampling plan is of paramount importance. Unless a suitable sampling plan is devised and adhered to rigorously during collection of the samples, all subsequent analysis is liable to strong bias and to yield spurious estimates of the truth. For a wide variety of purposes it is becoming necessary to assess the quantitative composition and variability of rock masses and mineralized zones of various types. In petrology and petrography this is something of a break with tradition, because virtually all descriptions heretofore have been qualitative. Although vast amounts of qualitative data have been compiled, little is known about the quantitative behavior of rock components. However, if variability of rocks could be understood and expressed with sufficient accuracy, there would be considerable advantage to both economic and petrogenetic problems. For example, if, on the basis of a limited series of observations, the three-dimensional geometry of a disseminated orebody (or ore-bearing formation) could be predicted accurately, it would be possible to extrapolate with confidence the structure into unexposed areas. The following example based upon the geometry of an igneous cone sheet illustrates the point. The significant rock-unit gives outcrops at a number of points on the exposed surface ABCD (Fig. 1A). Study of n exposures may enable a geologist to predict that the rock-unit is circular in form and thus indicate where the unit can be expected in unexposed terrain. Such observations are made at sites with u, v coordinates, but, if subsurface information is available at sites with uvw coordinates, it will eventually become possible to predict accurately the three-dimensional form of the rock mass. Geologic rock masses or mineral deposits are not generally as regular and symmetrical in geometric form as the body illustrated in Fig. 1A. However, even where the broad limits of a major rock mass are known, a more acute problem arises in attempting to obtain detailed quantitative estimates of its internal variability; it is difficult to predict the variability of a mass from a limited number of observa-

The deposition of calcium carbonate scale on surface and subsurface production equipment creates an operation problem in many oil fields. The formation water in which the carbonate-scale-forming components are initially dissolved becomes supersaturated with calcium carbonate as a result of the drop in pressure during production. The continuous flow of a supersaturated solution through the production equipment results in the growth of a dense layer of calcium-carbonate crystals. For a scale layer to be built up, the supersaturated formation water should contact the walls of the production equipment. The tendency for scale to be deposited, therefore, will be low, if the crude has a low water cut and if the water is finely dispersed in the oil. A scale problem will occur, if at a high water cut part of the water is present as free water. The rate of scale deposition will then be approximately proportional to the rate of free water production. Depending upon where the formation water becomes supersaturated, scale may be deposited in the flow line only, in both flow line and tubing, and in some cases even in the perforations and in the formation near the wellbore. In the South Sumatran fields (Indonesia) the main difficulties encountered due to the deposition of calcium-carbonate scale have been restriction of flow through tubings and flow lines, wear and abrasion of plungers and liners, and stuck plungers or wellhead valves. So far, the only methods of combating the *Presently associated with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd.. Seria. scale problem have been routine acidizing and additional well pulling. As for the pumping wells, it was estimated that some 50 percent of the total well-pulling effort was directly attributable to scale deposition. The most promising alternative was to prevent the deposition of calcium carbonate scale by means of chemicals. Inorganic polyphosphates such as sodium hexametaphosphate and trisodium polyphosphate are known to retard the formation of scale by the "threshold action". They are adsorbed on specific faces of the crystal nuclei and thus prevent crystal growth, thereby stabilizing supersaturation. Polyphosphates are effective at very low concentrations ( a few ppm), and far less than stoichiometric quantities are required to keep the scaling ions in solution. Recent investigations on barium sulfate scale1 have confirmed this mechanism. The types of polyphosphate mentioned can be applied as concentrated aqueous solutions either squeezed into the formation, lubricated down the annulus or injected via macaroni string. Several squeeze jobs with polyphosphate solutions have been carried out in the South Sumatran fields, however, with disappointing results. Lubrication down the annulus and injection through a macaroni string were not considered attractive in this area because of the kind of equipment and the degree of supervision these techniques require. Polyphosphates are also available in a granular, glassy form, which, in contrast with the readily soluble types already mentioned, show an extremely low
