Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

A packed column (or static tube) flotation system is an innovative technology which utilizes a controlled dispersion reagent scheme and a new machine. The unique aspect of the machine is its packed-bed design permitting an unlimited froth bed height with countercurrent water washing for effective processing of fine particles. In operation, the conditioned ore slurry is fed into the middle section of the column where separation processes begin. Air, introduced at the bottom of the packed column, contacts the hydrophobic particles and floats them off continuously as the feed is added, while the gangue sinks to the base of the column. The system functions efficiently because intimate particle-bubble contact is achieved by the packing design which has no moving parts and requires no ancillary air-bubble generator. Other attractive features of the packed column flotation include high throughput, low power requirements, and simple control. Results from laboratory and pilot plant tests of this system show remarkable improvements over current industrial practices on a wide variety of ores and coals.

Ledcap Pty Ltd has developed two software tools for assisting in the determination of life-of-mine (LOM) trucking requirements. The first tool generates haul paths and the second calculates truck travel time over these paths. The two step approach allows the paths to be viewed and if required edited, to better represent the actual site haul routes.The first tool automatically creates haul paths between the mine bench and the dump. To do this the user supplies a master haul route and a scheduled block model. The master haul path and the block model are interacted to create multiple haul routes, one for each pit/dump bench pair in each scheduling period. Each path carries with it a record of the scheduling period it represents and the dry tonnage hauled over the path in that period.The second tool calculates truck travel time over the path. Data from the manufacturer's rimpull and retarder curves are used to calculate accelerations and speed over each segment of the haul path. As the paths are derived from digitised representations of mine haul routes the path f les often have over a hundred segments. This detailed representation of the haul route allows the software to automatically adjust speed for different radius corners and accurately simulates the changing accelerations over the gradient changes that occur in real life mine ramps. Rolling resistance can be specified at a global level, at a segment level and at a period level. This allows rolling resistance to be changed seasonally as well as spatially.Life-of-mine trucking studies attempt to calculate an accurate answer from extremely variable inputs. This paper will detail the features of the two software tools and how the tools provided in the software can assist the mine planner to have greater confidence in their life-of-mine trucking requirements and the subsequent production capacity inputs to their scheduling calculations.

The LaModel program has been used successfully in the United States for many years to design pillars to ensure global stability of pillar recovery operations. However, the recent Crandall Canyon Mine collapse showed that further research was required to improve the design of pillar recovery under deep cover. Toward this end, a new calibration procedure was implemented in LaModel. This calibration procedure prescribes techniques for calibrating the critical LaModel input parameters based on empirical abutment loading and pillar strength, as utilized in the time-tested ALPS and ARMPS programs. The calibration procedure is intended to help guide a novice modeler in choosing calibrated input parameters that produce a standard model that fits within the verification database. However, the rigid parameter specification incorporated in the calibration procedure also removes most of the flexibility in LaModel for specific calibration to the unique conditions at a given mine site. In this paper, a number of the LaModel input parameters are varied outside the bounds of the suggested calibration and the effects on the model results are analyzed. Ultimately, it is shown how the LaModel user might vary certain input parameters to adjust the model to site-specific conditions, while still maintaining the general accuracy and philosophy of the recommended calibration.

In order to meet increasing demands for water supply in the next millennium, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have identified the need for a major new water treatment and transfer scheme. The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

The design philosophies for piles in unfrozen and frozen soils are compared, and their similarities and differences are underlined. It is shown that in frozen soils, the long term behavior of a pile is difficult to predict, because of inadequate knowledge on the behavior of adfreeze bond with time, and on the value and variation of the lateral normal stress acting on the pile. Both of these problems are discussed in the paper on the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical analyses.

Whilst the wider community is both a large consumer of mineral products and relies on mineral exports for much of the wealth which sustains it, the community generally has a poor perception of the minerals industry.   The role of professionals and The AusIMM in the "New Economy" minerals industry is reviewed. The new structure of The Institute is vital as we move forward in times of globalisation, rationalism, increasing litigation, criminalisation of risk and increased focus on corporate governance. This address looks forward to ways The AusIMM and professionals of the future are positioning themselves for these and other challenges.

The vibration response of a 30 in. diameter high-pressure (845 psi) natural gas pipeline to 11 coal mine blasts was measured. The X-52 steel pipeline was buried 7 ft. below the ground surface. Ground and pipeline motions in terms of velocities were recorded on the pipeline, in the ground adjacent to the pipeline, and near the ground surface directly above the pipeline. These data were used to estimate the maximum stresses and strains in the pipeline occurring during the blasts. Pipeline standoff distances varied from 264 ft. to 3720 ft. Two blast hole layouts and timing schemes were used. One represented highly confined blasts to limit movement of the shot overburden that generated high ground motions at the pipeline. The second represented patterns that provided greater relief and lower the ground velocities at the pipeline.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

Kriel Colliery has experienced some sub-standard blast results on the overburden. Blast results are considered poor when the fragmentation is too big, back break into the new highwall, capping is experienced and/or excess overburden material is thrown into the void. Poor blasting leads to lower productivity, equipment breakdowns, and poor drilling and blasting results on the adjacent blast, contamination of coal or loss of coal. A simulation was developed in Microsoft Excel to model blasting results while changing various parameters. From the simulation results, it could be seen that a change of blast design could be beneficial. As an example, smaller drilling patterns were simulated (10 m x10 m to 8 m x8 m, and 8 m x8 m to 7 m x7 m in Pit 5 and Pit 6 respectively) in combination with changes in explosives (P700 emulsion vs. ANFO) and drill bit diameter (311 mm vs. 251 mm). The results show that each of the options has a specific scenario that will be most beneficial to the mine. These results are quite specific and subject to variable inputs. The purpose of the example is to demonstrate how the simulation can be used as a tool to asses blast design variations.

The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

"SYNOPSISRecent developments in the use of the Bartles-Mozley table and the Bartles CTS screen are described for the gravity preconcentration of fine heavy mineral and metal particles present in low grade pulps. The B-M table is a relatively new device used for the recovery of particles of up to 100 micron size down to 5 microns or in the case of gold and platinum, down to 1 micron. The CTS screen is a wet screening device used for feed preparation ahead of the Bartles-Mozley table and will size effectively down to about 300 mesh. Results and operating data for a number of different materials are given including outline flowsheets; the effects of the major variables on the performance of the table are briefly discussed. The potential of the B-M table to treat a variety of different ores, coal, tailings, and waste products are considered. The utilization of the B-M table in association with other unit processes to improve overall results as well as to improve the economics of design and performance of plants are also mentioned.INTRODUCTIONA number of new gravity concentration devices have been developed in recent years for the recovery of fine heavy mineral and metal particles but for reasons which include low capacity, high capital or operating costs, competition from other and better processes, the absence of simplicity or reliability in operation etc., only a few which include the Bartles-Mozley table, have been proved to be of commercial application.The name of the machine is derived from the inventors name, Richard Mozley, who developed the B-M table at the University of Bristol in England. The table was subsequently taken up and patented, world-wide, by the National Research Development Corporation a British government agency. An exclusive license to manufacture the table was granted by NRDC to Bartles (Carn Brea) Ltd. in Cornwall, England."

This is one of a series of publications by the Bureau of Mines dealing with mining methods and costs at representative operations in the United States. The report describes all phases of the mining methods for the open-pit operation and milling practices employed at the Vermont Asbestos Mines in Lamoille and Orleans counties, Vermont. A brief history of discovery and development of these asbestos deposits is given, and the ore deposits are described. Methods employed in exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and grade are outlined. A breakdown of available cost figures is summarized in the last section. All asbestos ore produced in this area has been won by the use of surface-mining methods. Two quarries, the Lowell and the "C" Area, are in operation. The quarries combined are producing and the mill is processing approximately 3,500 tons of ore per 3-shift day The average 40,000 tons of crysotile asbestos fiber produced at this plant annually accounted for 96 to 98 percent of the total fiber produced in the United States in 1958. The mine is located (fig. 1) approximately 4 miles north of Eden Mills village on the southeastern flank of Belvidere Mountain (fig. 2).

The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act. Over the last decade, Fenway Park has undergone annual improvements to modernize the facility for players and fans. These renovations include the Monster Seats, the Right Field Roof expansion, a new pavilion behind home plate, expansion of the Red Sox clubhouse, additional roof seating, and concourse improvements. Retrofitting the historic ballpark to bring it up to current standards required installation of foundations to support the new structural loads for each of the alteration projects. This required evaluation of existing conditions, and in many cases augmentation of the foundations at existing columns to accommodate the structural changes to the park. New foundations, generally consisting of drilled-in micropiles, were installed in numerous configurations and conditions. Since 2003, a total of 215 drilled-in micropiles have been installed to augment various columns around the park. The micropiles range in capacity between 40 and 70 tons and are installed through Fill and Organic Soils and embedded into the dense Glaciofluvial Sand and Gravel layer. Issues and learning related to the foundation augmentation include schedule constraints (work is typically conducted during the off-season and schedule is very aggressive), encountering old/abandoned utilities or foundations, ventilation of equipment, and management of spoils during micropile installation.

"For over 50 years, Derrick Corporation has been renowned for its innovative and durable fine screening equipment and screen surface technology. Derrick’s latest innovation, the patented Stack Sizer, offers mineral processors both high tonnage capacity and high separation efficiency on an extremely small footprint.The Stack Sizer is suitable for separations from 6.3 mm down to 75 microns (200 mesh). The Stack Sizer, coupled with Derrick’s patented urethane screen surface technology, offers an extremely economical alternative to hydraulic classifiers, hydrocyclones, and less efficient low volume wet screening systems. Stack Sizers have been used in feed preparation for flotation, spirals, and a variety of jigs. Mineral processors wishing to reduce grinding circuit circulating loads and generation of slimes due to over grinding, thereby enhancing the efficiency of flotation and gravity circuits, now have another technology at their disposal to perform this critical sizing and grade control function.Over 200 Stack Sizers have been installed in numerous mineral processing applications worldwide attesting to the rapid acceptance of this technology. Stack Sizers are currently screening ferrous and non-ferrous metal ores, mineral sands, silica sand, kaolin clay, feldspar, garnet, phosphate, aluminum dross, potash, coal, tantalum, spodumene, niobium, and other rare earth mineral ores.INTRODUCTIONDerrick engineers have long understood and demonstrated the importance of screen width in coupling both high capacity and high separation efficiency for fine wet sizing applications. As opposed to fine dry sizing, where the length of the screening machine is critical for high separation efficiency, introducing slurry feed to screens in a thin and even layer at minimal velocities across wider screen surfaces allows for high capacities and efficiencies, with maximum screen cloth life. This is due primarily to the combination of free liquid and high frequency vibration of the Derrick motors, which allow fine undersize material to pass through the screen apertures. Lacking either of these factors would be extremely detrimental to the screening process. Without the high frequency vibration of the motor, the screen is essentially a low efficiency sieve bend. Without the free liquid to carry fines through the screen openings, the screen is for all intents and purposes a glorified conveyor or dewatering unit, as little or no sizing takes place once the screen is devoid of free liquid. For optimal screening results, Derrick recommends feeding slurry to a screen at approximately 20% solids by volume. Figure 1 shows the Stack Sizer design concept. Note that a single feed point is used to evenly distribute the flow to the five separate feed points."
