The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr2O3. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 16 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, stope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider stopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

Lead-zinc production at MIM, Mount Isa includes three mines, a lead concentrator, zinc filter plant and lead refinery. Lead production is vertically integrated with lead-silver bullion shipped from Australia to London for refining. Zinc is sold as a concentrate. All three mines have reached varying states of maturity mining a multitude of orebodies having significant variation in grades and metallurgical recovery for three metals. Based on current levels of measured resources, the remaining project life is at least ten years. The objective is to schedule production over the life of all three mines so as to maximize the present value of the complex. Additional scheduling complexity arises out of the implementation of long-term schedules, capital expansion projects for both mining and processing, the presence of substantial inferred reserves and interactions with MIM copper production. A large-scale, time-dynamic, life-of-complex Mixed Integer Program (MIP) production schedule was formulated to optimize lead/zinc cash flow based on a detailed life of project production scheduling study. The requirements for such a study are detailed herein. The operational feasibility of the MIP solution is compared against a non-optimal approach to strategic life-of-mine scheduling. The strategic planning emphasis placed on the MIP is compared to the implementation of a life-of-mine schedules at Mount Isa using spreadsheets and other popular commercial mine schedulers.

THE object of the present paper is to give a brief description of the metallurgical process followed by the Grand Junction Co, and the results obtained therefrom. All figures quoted are from the actual working of the plant over a period of six months from January to June, 1910. The short ton of 2000 lb. is used by the company. Its gold is valued at 84s. per oz. fine, silver at 2s. per oz. fine. The ore consists essentially of a gangue of quartz and calcite, with 8 to 10%sulphide-pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and traces of arsenic and antimony. The colmtry-rock is a highlyaltered dacite. Small stringers of highly-mineralized ore penetrate the footwall of some of the lodes, forming a valuable stockwerk up to 3 ft. in thickness. In stoping, this is mined with the well defined lode, thus bringing into the mill at times a considerable quantity of hard country-rock. The gold exists in an exceedingly fine state of division, consequently rendering it necessary to grind very fine to obtain a satisfactory extraction.

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder. The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. HE recent papers of Aust and Rutter112 have again brought to mind the importance of certain "special" orientation relationships between the lattices of two fcc crystals on the mobility of the grain boundary separating them. No theoretical treatment of this problem has been offered till now. The only principle published so far that has given an indication why certain orientation relationships should be "special" is the counting of "coincidence sites" according to the suggestions by Kronberg and Wilson.3 The "coincidence plots" published by these authors show, for instance, that two fcc lattices rotated by 38 deg around a common (111)-axis have 1/7 of their lattice sites in common. Such an orientation relationship is also characteristic for high boundary mobility. The accuracy of the orientation relationship needed for high mobility is not too rigid. Deviations up to 10 deg from the ideal orientation seem to be tolerable as can be gathered from the experimental data.'j4 The auestion arises, then. how the density of coincidence sites will be affected by a deviatioi from mathematical accuracy. This can be checked by a simple model. Two sieves are prepared, the arrangement of the holes corresponding to lattice sites on a (111)-plane in a fcc crystal. They are placed upon each other, Fig. 1. One is kept fixed, the other is rotated around an axis pushed through one hole in common to both. The light falling through holes of both sieves is then a measure for the density of coincidence sites. This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

"Brunswick Mining has investigated grinding media optimization for the purpose of improving the flotation feed and regrind product size distributions to enhance metal recoveries. This paper presents the findings of on-going testing of various sizes and shapes of grinding media. Plant observations combined with estimated breakage rates demonstrate the importance of appropriate selection of media sizes on the milling operation.IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting is located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, and operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines. The ore mineralogy and processing flowsheet have been described elsewhere (Petruk and Schnarr, 1981; Shannon et 01., 1993). Despite the 25 years' milling experience, there has been considerable disagreement as to the required grind size (Grant et 01., 1991). Since 1964, fineness of the flotation feed ranged from 60% to 80% passing 400 mesh (37 um) and averaged slightly above 71% in 1992. Results from mineralogical analysis (Petruk and Schnarr, 1981), laboratory and pilot plant experiments, as well as plant sampling (Grant et al., 1991; Hendriks and Ounpuu, 1985; Shannon et al., 1993) indicate that improved metal recoveries can be achieved by an increase in the fineness of grind, and more specifically by maximizing the amount of material in the 15 urn to 25 um range.This paper shows the results obtained so far from the evaluation of the effect of grinding media size and shape on grinding mill efficiency. The problem of finding optimum grinding media size, shape and composition has been recogrtized since the early 19405. The main criterion for the selection of media size is the size of the material to be ground (Bond, 1958). Although several relationships have been proposed to assist in the selection of grinding media size, none of them are entirely satisfactory (Wills, 1988). Other approaches using the breakage rates and process simulators were developed to help in the selection of grinding media size (Austin et al., 1976; Lo and Herbst, 1986; Concha et 01., 1992; Samskog et al., 1990; Martinovic et al., 1990). Although considerable effort was put into the analysis of grinding media size, very little information is available on the effect of grinding media shape (Norman and Decker, 1985, p. 3C-4). Norris (1952), Kelsall et al. (1973) and Herbst and Lo (1989) have shown that balls are more efficient than other shapes of grinding media including truncated cones and cubes."

In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. This paper addresses the impact of the variable speed drive on the particle size distribution in the product of a fully autogenous UG2 grinding circuit. It further discusses the impact of a varying particle size distribution in the product of the mill on the downstream classification and milling circuits. An industrial case study was used and data is presented to illustrate the techniques applied to identify the root cause of the shift in operational efficiency. The results achieved from both the investigation into the shift in plant efficiency and the sub-sequent corrective action taken illustrate that the root-cause methodology used in advance control can be effectively applied on production sites to both detect the shift and identify probable root-causes. The industrial example used confirms that the variable speed drive in a UG2 autogenous milling operation is a critical control parameter to ensure that the plant operates to design specifications.

A series of small scale tests, have been performed to establish the effect of powder factor and initiation timing on the grindability of rocks. The blasts were performed in high quality granite blocks, which were cut from stone prepared by dimensional stone quarry operations. Three different types of granite, Barre, Stanstead and Laurentian, were tested. The charge consisted of detonating cord placed in five holes with water as a coupling medium, or concentrated charges of equal mass of high exolosive, fully stemmed or air decked. Powder factor was varied from 0.39 to 1.17 kg/m3. Charges were detonated simultaneously or with a small delay and in some experiments, detonation waves collided in the middle of each borehole. All fragments were collected and screened, and drop weight impact tests were performed on selected size fractions, using different levels of impact energy, to calculate the resistance of the rock to impact breakage. The work index of some of the blasted samples was measured using standard Bond mill grindability tests. The experiments generally showed increased softening of the rock with powder factor, manifested by the increasing initial slope of the relationship between t10 and impact energy. The rate of change of the initial slope decreased with increasing powder factor. Changes in the work index were small and consistent in trend with the results of the single fragment impact characterization tests. Charge configuration, timing as well as in-hole collisions of detonation waves affected the initial fragmentation but had little effect on the impact breakage of the samples.

Several years ago, we used an electric analogue computer to study the effect of vertical fractures on the productivity of wells in expanding fluid-drive reservoirs. The results of this work were used both as a guide to research and as a basis for the design of actual fracturing operations. In 1958, Dyes, Kemp and Caudle' published portions of the data from this study. The results were released in 1959 to service companies for use in fracturing guides. The purpose of this note is to discuss the experimental conditions and assumptions which were made to derive the information which is already partially a matter of public record. ASSUMPTIONS This study applies to fractures which extend in a vertical plane symmetrically from the well. For simplicity, we chose to study the case of a well in a square drainage area with its fractures extending toward two of its nearest neighbors. We have assumed no migration of fluid across the boundary of this area. The quadrant shown in Fig. 1 models this system. We made the usual assumptions that the reservoir is homogeneous and isotropic, that the fluid is homogeneous and that production is effected by fluid-expansion drive. We also assumed that the fracture extends from top to bottom of the reservoir. Of more practical interest is our assumption that the fracture does not change the size of the drainage area. This premise is appropriate if all the wells in the reservoir are fractured in the same way. But where a single well is fractured, its drainage area may be enlarged at the expense of its neighbors. This could be of economic importance. The assumption that the fracture will not extend beyond the established drainage area of the well also limits the application of the results. Such long frac- tures will yield benefits in excess of those predicted here. When we assume homogeneity, we disregard the frequently observed zone of damage in the vicinity of the well. Where damage is severe, the benefits resulting from by-passing it will far exceed those predicted by this study. All comparisons were made of systems producing in the semi-steady state. By this we mean that equal volumes contributed equally to flow (pressure was dropping at a uniform rate throughout the system) when the rate of flow was observed. The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.
