The competitive market potential for solvent refined coal is estimated. Market advantages of solvent refined coal are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking the solvent refining of coal.

Silica sands, primarily in coarse size ranges, are used to prop open fissures or voids created in the bedrock by hydraulic fracturing. This procedure increases the flow of gas or oil or other fluids through the bedrock. The sands used must meet various specifications relating to their physical and chemical characteristics; these characteristics are in turn related to the geologic provenance of the sand deposit. The Jordan Sandstone, a Cambrian formation which is exposed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, meets the specifications of a proppant sand by virtue of its depositional history and its sedimentary properties.

The original patent for the gyratory crusher was granted to Philetus W. Gates in 1881. This first crusher was used by the Buffalo Cement Co. At the time these early gyratory crushers were developed all mining and quarrying, either underground or open pit, was done by hand; tonnages generally were small and product specifications simple and liberal. Likewise plants were small and demands for small product sizes practically nonexistent. In addition to substantial amounts of hand labor, the available material handling equipment was small, simple, and not suited to handling large run of mine ore. Mine can, cable ways, or belt conveyon transporting crushed material to the mill had limited capacity per hour. At the turn of the century the largest Gates crusher, the No. 9, had a receiving opening of 21 x 48 in. with a three-arm spider and a 21 x 80-in. opening with a two-arm spider. The steam shovel began to change the entire picture of open pit quarrying. As a result of the use of steam shovels around 1910 crushers with 48-in. receiving openings were built; thus it can be seen that the basic gyratory crusher was developed prior to World War I. The improvement of the internal combustion engine and the use of pneumatic tires created a new set of operating conditions. Early mines were small, using shrinkage stoping and small mine can. The capacity of material handling was small, limiting the size of the largest piece and the feed rate. Improved material handling resulted in more and more large open pit mines with large shovels and a tremendous increase in the size of off road or mine haul trucks or rail can. Primary gyratory crushers also increased with receiving openings as large as 60 in. and connected hp of 1,000.

Virtually all structures show some signs of distress due to deterioration of the building components, to changed loads, or to changed support conditions. Changed support conditions result from ground movements. In mining regions many cases of structural distress are attributed to mining without considering alternative causes. This is particularly true of coal mining since it occurs under extensive areas. Coal mining is estimated to have already undermined more than eight million acres and may eventually undermine 40 million acres in the United States (HRB Singer, Inc., 1977). Other nonmetal and metal underground mines impact much smaller areas. Although it is sometimes difficult, even with careful study, to identify the actual cause of damage, persons responsible for underground coal mining should at least be aware of possible causes of building stress other than mine subsidence. This paper presents information on distress to structures and briefly reviews a number of causes of ground movements other than subsidence: Mass movements, dissolution, erosion, frost action, shrinking and swelling, yield into excavations and compressibility

Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury occurs during recovery operations, ? Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action, ? Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

The ability to predict the effects of longwall mining on topography and surface structures is important for any coal company in making permit applications and anticipating potential mining problems. The sophisticated finite element model described and evaluated in this paper is based upon five years of underground and surface observations and evolutionary development of modeling techniques and attributes. The model provides a very powerful tool to address subsidence and other ground control questions. The model can be used to calculate post-mining stress and strain conditions at any horizon between the mine and the ground surface. This holds the promise of assisting in the prediction of mining-related hydrological effects.

The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as originally thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g., in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measurements in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe(OH)3 and between Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions.

INTRODUCTION Prior to 1705, underground mining was limited to mineral deposits located above or a very small distance below the water table. The development of the steamdriven mining pump was motivated by the need to extract minerals from deposits considerably lower than the water table. Today, the majority of mine pumps are driven by electric motors, although some small utility pumps are driven by compressed air. Of the numerous types of pumps that might be applied to mine service, the two types used most frequently underground are the centrifugal and plunger pumps. Each of these types has its proper application. In most instances, plunger pumps are best for handling low water volumes against high heads, while centrifugal pumps effectively handle either low or high water volumes against low heads or high water volumes against high heads. This chapter describes pumps applied to underground mine service, where the mine service consists of mine drainage (removing mine water as it accumulates), mine dewatering (removing water from a flooded mine), and pumping for special applications such as hydraulic mining and hydraulic hoisting. CENTRIFUGAL AND PLUNGER PUMPS Modern mine pumps are classified as either centrifugal (kinetic) or plunger (positive-displacement) pumps. The following paragraphs describe each of these classifications. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps may be grouped into various types, depending upon their various features: Number of Stages: In a single-stage pump, the total head is developed by one impeller, while a multi¬stage pump utilizes two or more impellers acting in one casing to develop the total head. Fig. I shows a cutaway view of a single-stage horizontal split-case double -section centrifugal pump. Fig. 2 shows a cutaway view of a six-stage medium-pressure split-case diffuser-type centrifugal pump. Type of Casing: A volute pump has a casing in the form of a spiral or volute. A circular-casing pump has a casing of constant cross section concentric with the impeller. A diffuser pump is equipped with a diffuser that converts velocity head to pressure head. Shaft Position: A horizontal pump normally has the shaft in a horizontal position, while a vertical pump normally has the shaft in a vertical position. Product losses to tailings ponds have long been a source of frustration for the mining and utilities industries. The utilization -of the Lewis Econosizer to recover lost products has proven to be very cost effective through reduced acreage requirements, cleaning costs and increased production. The unit is successfully operating in coal, aggregates, industrial minerals, clay, fly ash, heavy minerals and many other ores. Utilizing an upward flow of slurry in a free settling environment, particles stratify within the unit according to settling velocities and are removed as sized products. Ultra fines or clarified water is removed off the top of the unit. The Econosizer requires no power and only minimal maintenance.

It took me nearly nine months to make the move from Arizona to Berkeley, opening an office and planning our new home. While I was in Warren Dorothy had rented two rooms for my office In the new California Commercial Union Building at 315 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. She made such a good choice that this remained my address for more than 50 years Dorothy had also looked over many lots In Berkeley, and took an option on the one that pleased her the most. It was a beautiful lot, or rather three, as we took three lots to protect our view. The only possible drawback was that it was in a new district and there were only two houses within two blocks. No one could tell how the area would develop but we liked it so much that we bought the lots on the spot and signed a note to guarantee payment. Dorothy's good judgment was shown by the fact that after 50 years we are still glad to be living on the same property, at 168 Southampton Avenue. We arranged a meeting with the distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck-and employed him to design a house for us. Dorothy spent most of her time with Maybeck planning the house and an attached studio for her, and she later wrote an amusing essay on her dealings with Maybeck. They were so successful that even now we could not think of any changes we would have wanted. It took several months to design a house that suited Dorothy and would fit on our hilltop. I was glad to overcome some of Maybeck's scorn for "only an engineer" by showing how, by rotating the studio addition 45º, it would fit the lot without serious excavation. We finally signed a contract with Maybeck, borrowing so much money that it scared us. This paper discusses the ways in which the metals industries dealt with surplus capacity in the past, primarily the twenty years, 1950 - 1970. During this period, the bulk of metals production in the market-economy countries was controlled by private sector companies. Since then, public sector companies have played an increasingly important role in the metals industries of the market-economy countries. Of course, the change was not overnight. It occurred gradually over a period of many years. Indeed, by 1965, several developing nations had adopted policies of government control of metal operations previously in private hands. The metals industries are so many, so large and so diverse that the constraints of time make it impossible to deal with all segments. To illustrate the problems of surplus capacity in the metals industries during the period, this paper focusses primarily on three metals. One experienced rapid market expansion between 1950 and 1970; one had a growth more or less in line with the expansion of the world economy; and one lagged well behind the pace of industrial expansion. No one will be surprised if aluminum is identified as the metal with rapid growth; copper is identified as the metal that kept pace with the world economy; and tin is identified as the laggard. Individual computations of the rate of growth for these metals show some variations, but most estimates place the increase in aluminum consumption in the market economy countries between 1950 and 1970 at a compound annual rate of about 8%. The corresponding figure for copper is a compound rate of 4%. Tin consumption showed no growth. A widely accepted point of view is that sharply rising demand will force the price of a commodity to increase substantially in order to attract a necessary expansion of supply. The corollary to this is that stagnant demand will hold prices down, as there is no need to stimulate new supply and it may be necessary to force marginal producers out of the market. The experience with aluminum, copper and tin in the years 1950-1970 does not support this theory. In 1950, the average prices in the United States market as reported by the American Bureau of Metal Statistics were 17.74 a pound for aluminum, 21.24 a pound for copper, and 95.54 a pound for tin. The corresponding figures in 1970 were 28.74 a pound for aluminum, 57.74 a pound for copper and 174.24 a pound for tin. Aluminum, with the greatest market growth, rose by 60%, whereas tin rose 82% and copper by 172%. Clearly, other factors were a more important influence on price than was the trend of demand To revert now to the capacity issue, during the period under review aluminum demand was rising so sharply that that industry had no sustained problem with surplus capacity. Instead, if anything, capacity may at times have been a constraint on demand. The industry succeeded in attaining explosive market growth through imaginative research and promotion programs. Some of this growth was the result of substitution of aluminum for other commodities – steel, copper, wood and glass as examples. But much of the growth was the consequence of developing entirely new products through technological innovation. Prior to World War 11, the number of aluminum producers was extremely limited. Alcoa and Alcan in North American and Pechiney and Alusuisse in Europe were the dominant firms. The developing countries had virtually no production and in Japan and Germany production was only a small fraction of the North American output. During the War years the United States had financed the construction of many new facilities. After the war these plants were sold by the government to Reynolds and Kaiser in order to foster more competition in the market. Subsequently many other concerns became aluminum producers, both in the United States and elsewhere and competition for markets intensified.

Antamina is a large open-pit copper and zinc mine located within the Central Andes of Northern Peru at an altitude of 4300 masl. The facilities are situated within the headwaters of several watersheds, within the Amazon basin. Nearby villages rely heavily on springs and streams for drinking and irrigation water. The principle source of baseflow during the dry season is from Cretaceous karstic limestone aquifers. Antamina will produce nearly 1.4 billion tonnes of waste rock over its mine life. Finding suitable sites for storing large volumes of waste rock is often a challenging task – especially in karstic, alpine terrain. Detailed hydrogeological investigations are essential for delineating the karstic hydrogeologic watersheds associated with the proposed waste facilities, which are often very different than topographic (hydrologic) watersheds. Contamination vulnerability mapping at Antamina consisted of geological and karst mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical testing, dye-tracer studies, drilling and aquifer testing. Detailed mapping followed by dye-tracer studies proved to be the most cost-effective methods for characterizing the karst aquifer systems. The results were used to optimize waste rock management at the site to minimize potential impacts on groundwater resources.

"When designing segmental lining at a cross passage, modern solutions try to bear the loads transferred around the opening within the rings by using shear elements in the ring joints. Commonly used shear systems providing coupling are cam & pocket, shear keys, bicones and steel dowels. These solutions have advantages and disadvantages, but most importantly they have limits in their capacity to stabilize the lining at cross passages. With the help of 3D-FE-analyses for an opening of one segmental ring these different solutions are compared taking various ground conditions into account. As a result the capacity of the individual system is determined. Notice is made regarding the applicability of the system as well as the consequences for the design and the verification. INTRODUCTION The design of the lining at a cross passage is among the most difficult tasks when designing TBM-tunnels. At one time the bedding of the lining disappears due to the excavation behind the lining, at another the ring-structure is interrupted when parts of the lining are removed for the opening. The trick is to transfer the loads around the opening into other segments and to areas of the lining which are still supported by the ground. In the rings immediately at the cross passage this creates a distribution of forces within the segments that strongly deviates from that of the regular lining. The design needs to consider the boundary conditions of the respectively chosen solution for stiffening of the opening and its peculiarities in the modeling as well as in the verifications. In the past segments of steel or an internal strutting of steel (DAUB 2013) placed around the later openings were commonly used, see Figure 1. The application of a strutting from the outside to the rings is restricted to such circumstances when for example a connection from a shaft to the tunnel can be made in suitable ground conditions (Ring and Glomp 2012). Though steel segments provide a robust solution, they are expensive due to their laborious manufacture, the high proportion of construction steel required and the time consuming installation in the tunnel (Häfliger 2013). A strutting of steel requires extensive design and verification. The resulting structure usually weighs several tons and must be erected as well as demounted within the confined space of the tunnel, requiring suitable transport and assembly equipment. The cross section remains restricted, thus causing a bottleneck for TBM operations and hindering the works and installations for the cross passage works."

"Historically there have been a number of different hypotheses and empirical models developed in an attempt to describe the nature of fracturing above longwall panels in underground coal mining. The motivation for such models varies, ranging from understanding the impact of mining on surface subsidence to back-analysis of caving behaviour in the immediate roof behind the longwall face. One of the most critical motivating factors that is taking on increased importance in many coalfields is the need for better understanding, and hence prediction of the impact of mining on overlying strata, particularly strata units acting as aquifers for different groundwater horizons.This paper reviews some of the major prediction models in the context of observed behaviour of strata displacement and fracturing above longwall panels in the Southern Coalfields of New South Wales, south of Sydney. The paper discusses the parameter often referred to as “height of fracturing” in terms of the critical parameters that influence it, and the relevance and appropriateness of this terminology in the context of overlying sub-surface subsidence and groundwater impact. The paper proposes an alternative terminology for this parameter that better reflects what it is and how it is used. The paper also addresses the potential role of major bedding shear planes mobilised by mining and their potential influence on overlying subsidence and groundwater interference.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the detailed nature of rock deformation and failure above any form of large-scale underground mining is always going to be limited to interpretation from a very incomplete set of data. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to directly measure the detailed nature of the rock failure, fracture networks, and deformational behaviour above an extracted mining area. Limited techniques such as borehole extensometry can provide some evidence of relative or incremental deformation in the direction of the borehole (usually vertical). However, such data cannot assist below the horizon where full caving has caused major rotation and dislocation of rock blocks and effectively destroyed the instrumentation borehole. Above such a horizon, the data is only valid along the axis and in the direction of the borehole, and to the level of detail defined by the extensometer anchor spacing intervals. It is often also restricted by major shear planes intersecting the extensometer borehole and cutting off the instrumentation below the level of the shear horizons."

The East Side Access (ESA) Project in New York will be the largest tunneling project ever undertaken by a US railroad. The objective of the ESA project is to connect the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Main Line and Port Washington Line in Queens to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The Project is divided into two distinctive segments: Manhattan and Queens. The Queens segment is subdivided into two major components; cut and cover tunnel construction and bored tunnels. The bored tunnels in Queens consist of five tunnels driven from a launch shaft and traverse a railway storage yard, Sunnyside Yard and terminate under the multitrack mainlines of Amtrak and LIRR at portals in the heart of Harold Interlocking where1200 trains pass every day. The soil consists of remnants of glacial till moraines and of outwash and till deposits of inter layered gravel and fines, with the occasional boulders and cobbles and with a high ground water table. It is anticipated that a Pressurized Face Machine, either slurry or Earth Pressure Balance equipped with roller disks to mine the boulders encountered as well as the mixed face, will be used to mine the tunnels. One pass reinforced concrete gasket bolted liner will be used. The cut and cover construction consists of an approximately 21.3 m (70 feet) deep excavation supported by slurry walls and jet grout columns. The slurry walls, in combination with overlapping jet grouted columns, are installed to top of rock forming a closed bathtub to control external groundwater drawdown. Maintaining the groundwater level near its original elevation is of paramount importance in order to prevent undesirable settlements and migration of groundwater that could be contaminated. Mitigation measures to prevent the migration of nearby plums are contemplated for all types of tunneling and excavation work in this site of the ESA project.

The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed out of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferro-magnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the intensity of the electromagnet. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59x0.50 and 0.18x0.15 mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.
