The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. Eveleth taconite company was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi range of Minnesota. Its thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minnesota, and the crude ore is transported by rail to its Fairlane plant approximately ten miles to the south of the mine, "figure 1". As is implied by the names of the mine and plant, the ford motor company is the principal owner of Eveleth taconite company, with an 85% interest, Oglebay Norton company holds the remaining 15% interest and also is the managing agent.

Hecla Limited, Magee Scientific, and NIOSH have combined efforts to evaluate an in-situ air filtration system for use in an underground mine environment. The purpose of the collaboration was to determine the efficacy of such a technology for reducing the concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM), with the aim of improving air quality in underground hardrock mines. A secondary goal was to evaluate the use of an Aethalometer as a means of real-time measurement of black carbon as a surrogate for DPM. The evaluation included measuring the DPM-capture efficiency of the filter when it was pre-loaded with dust. Toward this end, rock dust was introduced at the filter inlet to create a dust layer on the filter surface, with the intent of providing improved capture of the much smaller DPM particles. The filtration efficiency for DPM was assessed by comparing measurements of DPM taken at the inlet and outlet of the system, using both real-time and time-weighted-average approaches. The real-time measurements were performed with the model AE33 Aethalometer® made by Magee Scientific. The results of the NIOSH 5040 method analysis were used to assess the effects of the system on time-weighted-average concentrations of total carbon. Results showed a reduction in DPM concentrations in the range of 82%-89%. While the calculated efficiencies based on the two different measurement methods were similar, the DPM levels reported by the Aethalometer were higher, possibly due to differences in the performance of the size-selectors used for the two methods (impactors versus cyclones). More research is required to develop a robust correlation between the two methods, to support the use of the Aethalometer for future mining applications. The advantage of the Aethalometer is that it can measure and record DPM levels for weeks at a time, and can be directly connected to a mine monitoring system, potentially at multiple locations. Ideally such data can be used to initiate the startup of the filtration system should DPM concentrations reach an action level. This work demonstrated that in-situ filtration systems, modified to collect DPM and coupled with real-time monitoring, show promise at reducing DPM concentrations in the mine environment.

Geographically, it is situated in the south- western tip of the Mainland of Japan (Mid City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) and is bordered by the scenic Akiyoshi Karstic Plateau which is world famous for its huge stalactite grotto.

Accurately estimating load distributions and ground responses around underground openings plays a significant role in the safety of the operations in underground mines. Adequately designing pillars and other support measures relies highly on the accurate assessment of the mining-induced loads, as well as the load-bearing capacities of the supports. There are various methods that can be used to approximate mining-induced loads in stratified rock masses, both empirical and numerical. In this study, the numerical modeling approach recently developed at West Virginia University, which is based on the modeling approach developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is investigated using the finite difference software FLAC3D. The model includes the longwall panels, the adjacent chain pillar systems, and the different stratigraphic layers of the overburden. Using the 3D model, changes in loading conditions and deformations on the areas of interest, induced by an approaching longwall face, can be examined. This paper details the 3D modeling of a longwall panel utilizing this approach, and the verification of the results against field observations. The studied panel was 360 m wide with a 3-entry chain pillar system and about a 160-m average overburden depth around the studied area. The overburden strata consist of alternating layers of shale, sandstone, and limestone. The FLAC3D results were compared against field measurements from the mine site. The stress change values measured in the chain pillars were comparable with the modeling results. The model also replicated the surface subsidence profile obtained from field measurements fairly well. Overall, the 3D modeling approach was found to be successful for the case study longwall panel.

Rail access to Ontario International Airport (ONT) has long been a goal of San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to increase public transit options to ONT and provide incoming ONT passengers improved access to San Bernardino County and the greater Southern California region. This paper describes the planning for the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) delivery of an emerging technology tunnel connection between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and ONT. The paper discusses key technical considerations, challenges, and opportunities; conceptual configuration development; and construction planning and establishment of the footprint for the underground connection.

Hang-ups are a challenging operational problem in block caving mines. They interrupt ore flow and imply hang-up removal activities, which take time, increase operational costs, and involve safety risks for workers. In block caving, the number of hangup events of mechanical arches that appear in the drawbell could be decreased if the drawbell geometry is adequately designed based on the expected rock fragmentation. Here, we compile and analyze hang-ups reported in several block caving mines to evaluate the impact of drawbell geometry, rock size, and vertical load on hang-up frequency at the mine scale. Results show that the ratios between drawbell length and d80 (dL/d80), between drawbell width and d80 (dW/d80), between drawbell volume and rock volume (VDB/VP), and vertical stress are critical parameters that define hang-up frequency. These findings confirm previous experimental studies, where a decrease in hang-up events is associated with an increase in these ratios. Additionally, these outcomes are used in a support vector machine algorithm to define categories of hang-up frequency. The results of this classification algorithm are presented in diagrams, which can be used to estimate the hang-up frequency in block caving projects.

In open-pit mining, blasting pattern design is performed to achieve a desired degree of fragmentation for loading, hauling, and crushing operations. Inappropriate fragmentation of rock will result in numerous problems such as incurring extra costs for secondary blasting, production interruption, etc. Wetness of the blast holes is one of the most important factors, which can cause the inappropriate rock fragmentation. Lowering ambient temperature in the vicinity of the explosion, the presence of water in the hole adversely affects the quality of the explosive while dissipating part of the explosion energy, ending up with inappropriate fragmentation problems. In the present research, in order to study blast-induced fragmentation conditions in Baba-Ali Iron Ore Mine, three scenarios were considered: explosion of ammonium nitrate with fuel oil (ANFO) in dry hole, explosion of ANFO in wet hole, and explosion of the emulsion in wet hole. For this purpose LS-DYNA, a numerical simulation code was used. Results of the present research showed that, compared to the explosion of ANFO in wet hole, the explosion of the emulsion produced more uniform distribution of fragment size, while the explosion of ANFO in dry hole resulted in fewer large fragments.

Efficient performance of EPB TBMs in clayey ground is primarily dominated by the flow capability of the excavated muck in the cutterhead and screw conveyor. Currently, Consistency Index approach is used to evaluate clay clogging potential, but it does not include the effects of surcharge pressure on clay behavior. In this paper, a macro-scale soil rheometer is introduced to assess the clogging potential under various water content and surcharge loading conditions. The results show that, in addition to water content, surcharge pressure has clear impact on clay clogging too. In practice, Consistency Index chart can be refined to incorporate the impact of face pressure to better simulate the EPB tunneling conditions.

Shotcrete is a highly adaptable and widely used underground construction material at infrastructure and mining projects around the world. In fact, many projects could not have been completed without its utilization. As underground projects became larger the use of mechanized wet-mix spraying gradually replaced manual dry-mix shotcrete applications. This paper details some of the reasons for that and provides information on the equipment and operational factors including safety and productivity required to successfully complete underground shotcrete projects.

Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

This paper presents best practice data management for monitoring of extensometers in Australian underground coal mines. This work is based on the combined experience of the authors and the available literature. The information and ideas presented herein are a culmination of many years of database development founded from mine site-based ground support design, underground inspections, extensometer data management and data analysis. Each author has more than ten years’ experience as a practicing geotechnical engineer at several operating industry wide research project focused on utilizing mechanical extensometer data for data analytics and machine learning. Principal hazard ground control management plans, stipulated in Australian coal mining legislation, outline the mandatory installation of ground monitoring devices during routine mining activities. After 20+ years of data gathering the barrier to implementing modern data analytics remains the challenges imposed by inconsistent data structure and data quality. This inconsistency is still routinely found between sites, companies and mining regions. Through the relatively simple application of a standardized database structure, the potential to shift from simplistic tracking of trigger levels, siloed at individual sites, to an industry standard method for compilation & comparison of monitoring data is enabled.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

The mineral sands industry is oriented primarily toward the supply of titanium (Ti) raw materials (titanium feedstocks) for the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and titanium metal. Titanium minerals ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene, and titanium slag and synthetic rutile are all used principally as feedstocks for the production of white TiO2 pigment. It accounts for almost 90 percent of the world?s consumption of titanium minerals. The remainder is used for the production of titanium metal, fluxes for welding rods and as a metallurgical flux in iron and steel making. Titanium dioxide pigment is produced by two alternative process routes, the sulfate process or chloride process. The bulk of the world?s titanium dioxide is derived from the mineral ilmenite, which also contains iron oxide and other minor impurities. At some mining operations, the iron present in ilmenite is removed (ilmenite beneficiation) to produce a high TiO2 feedstock (slag or synthetic rutile) typically containing between 80 percent and 95 percent TiO2. Pigment producers then further process it to produce pigment.

The installed world steel capacity remains 20% above the present world steel demand. Energy costs have risen enormously in recent years, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The role of the sinter plant is becoming more exacting as it becomes vital to minimize energy consumption. Continuous grate sintering, although pioneered in the United States, has always been the second grade burden preparation route, due to the predominance of easily up- graded ores which were more readily agglomerated by pelletizing. To achieve blast furnace performance up to best world standards, sinter of consistent high quality must be produced with virtually no atmospheric pollution. The plants must be capable of achieving this demanding level of quality whilst utilizing high proportions of revert materials, iron ore concentrates and fluxes . However, with the present difficult economic climate in the iron and steel industry, the economic production of sinter and ultimately steel is becoming increasingly important. The iron and steel industry is looking closely at costs and is identifying the need for sinter plants that will cope with a wide range of sintering materials to give the cheapest blend at varying output levels dependent upon demand. In order to meet these requirements, sinter plant builders are designing plants with particular attention on flexibility.

Two modes of potential loss of oxime extractants in liquid extraction processes for the extraction of copper have been studied. In loss "by chemical degradation, two mechanisms of acid hydrolysis are possible, some reagents degrade primarily in the organic bulk phase, Others at the interface between the organic phase-- phase protects the oxime but salts added to the aqueous acid phase can promote the rate of degradation. The reagents reported on are the LIX series (Henkel Cpn), SME529 (Shell Chem.Co.) and P5100 (Acorga) Loss by organic entrainment in the aqueous phase leaving mixer-settlers has also been studied, parameters investigated including impeller/tank geometry and the phase inlet arrangements. The consequences of extractant loss by the above mechanisms...are commented upon. They include the direct economic cost, the possible environmental problems and the implications for downstream operations such, as electrowinning.

In January of 1969 the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, through the National Air Pollution Control Administration, published a series of Air Quality Criteria (4'S) and Control Techniques (6,7) for air pollutants in compliance with the 1967 Clean Air Act which will affect the operation of all fuel burning equipment in the very near future. The design of equipment for the future which will use fossil fuels will also be affected. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the modifications which might be anticipated in the future for fuel burning equipment. One class of the several air pollutants looked at first by the USDHEW was the sulfur oxides. Other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, will be studied and controls for these will supposedly be written in due time. The obvious use of low-sulfur fuels, coal, oil and natural gas is suggested by the Control Technique(6). Conversion to other sources of power, such as nuclear energy and hydropower, is also suggested. The statement is made that since possible hydroelectric sources are limited and nuclear plants are not yet available on a large scale, the changeover to these sources of power will not be overnight. The bulletin (6) suggests that one possible solution in some areas may be the use of low sulfur coals for short periods of time during periods of severe air pollution. A curve showing the effect of this was given in the 1969 April issue of the Power magazine, where A. E. Boyer and F. B. Kaylor of Stone and Webster also described a computer program called DOSAGE which might be used to check weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity, and sound an alarm when that 0.1% of the time per season is here that requires the use of low-sulfur fuel. Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.
