In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge”, Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling, with high-pressure grinding. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation, and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed set up to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of highpressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone, and final stage total circuit energy savings, exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 m (1 MPa, tensile strength) into the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to have an impact on the pitscale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone — up to 2.2 m (43 MPa, rock mass compressive strength) — indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout 20-50% of the entire rock mass in the blasting area, depending on the blast geometry, burden and spacing. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond’s law after increasing the blast energy from 180 kcal/t to 350 kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. However, the benefits of blast-induced microfracturing must be balanced against the potential impacts to slope stability to ensure safe conditions, a top priority in mining operations.

The design and effectiveness of ground consolidation to regain stability of longwall faces vary widely and are often based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. Little is known regarding product migration characteristics or change in rockmass conditions as a result of the application of consolidation chemicals. This paper presents the in-situ testing rationale designed and implemented recently across several longwall operations in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia to provide quantitative measurement of the actual zone of influence of various resin injection products. Product migra- tion was physically measured by monitoring the change in rockmass temperature as a result of the exothermic chemical reaction of the various strata consolidation chemicals used. In conjunction with strata coring and Lugeon transmissivity testing pre- and post-injection to characterise the improvement in rockmass conditions due to consolidation product injection. The results of the testing programme, migration measurements, and rockmass assessment are presented, along with a discussion on how site- based Rock Mechanics Engineers can incorporate the data into the design of strata consolidation plans.

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. "INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

In 1977, Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Mining was developed at the Homestake Mine and by 1983 had become a fully integrated mining method contributing 60% to total underground production. VCR has proven successful for continuous ore blocks exceeding 55,100 tons (50,000 st) with dips greater than 60" and provides a productivity average of 39 tons (35 st) per man shift (tpms) which is 92% greater than Open Cut-and-Fill. Discontinuous ore bodies, small pods, or flat structures not amenable to bulk systems are mined with Mechanized Cut-and-Fill (MCF) and have been able to achieve a 32 tpms (29 st) average productivity. Small, low grade, remnant ore bodies were not economically viable with large scale bulk techniques and couldn't support the development required for a MCF system. As a result, Homestake began researching modified bulk mining methods to increase production rates and maintain safety, while lowering costs. A modified version of VCR with significantly diminished development was prototyped in an effort to reduce initial capital investment and expedite the production phase. This modified method is called Small Block Vertical Crater Retreat (S. B. VCR). Geology The Homestake Gold Mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota at Lead. Having been active since 1876, it now extends from the surface to the 2,440 m (8000 ft) level underground.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

Roll crushers had been used in the past ahead of existing milling systems in order to obtain additional production from such mills in both the mining and the cement industries. Historically, a roll crusher as a preliminator to a ball mill has been used for a number of industrial mineral applications. Flowsheets, from Taggars(1) show systems for fluorspar, graphite, lead and zinc to name a few, which are shown in Figures 1 to 4. These units applied, (in some cases still in service), prior to 1950 and as early as the 1920's, were of two general types, rigid rolls and spring rolls. The rigid rolls were phased out in favor of the spring rolls. The spring force related to the linear inch width of the rolls, ranged from 500 to 50,000 lbs/linear inch(1) on units up to 90" diameter. With choke feeding, the rolls were spread against the spring force during crushing keeping the system under high pressure to obtain high effectiveness.

A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems is rapidly becoming an essential tool in mine planning and design. This paper examines the utilization of ventilation simulation techniques to evaluate the number, shape, size and layout of mine entries in a typical coal mining system. Since the mains and sub-mains serve mainly for transportation and ventilation and the ventilation system is critically important to the health and safety of the workers, there exists a great need for optimal designs in this area. Evaluation criteria, could include, among others, minimization of power costs, shaft requirements and leakage. Constraints of this optimization problem include health and safety regulations and production and mine infrastructure requirements.

Modern business practice dictates that in order to ensure the economic optimization of investment, the size of any investment venture must be such that every increment of capital invested in such a venture yields at least a corporate minimum acceptable rate of return. This practice is based on the premise that alternative investment opportunities capable of yielding the minimum corporate return are immediately available. If a mining corporation is to make the maximum use of its investment funds, any capital investment in a mining property must comply with the above practice. The most important parameter in estimating ore reserves is the cut-off grade which is used to separate material into ore or waste. The cut-off grade is calculated on the basis that material of cut-off grade produces sufficient revenue to cover the estimated costs of mining and processing through to sales, including depreciation and produce a pre-determined profit. Ore reserves so estimated are adequate for determining the magnitude of an orebody but do not provide a sound basis for determining plant size and therefore capital investment in a new property or for expansion consideration on an existing property. From a financial analysis of this one ore reserve it is impossible to ascertain whether each increment of capital investment is providing the minimum acceptable rate of return, Other difficulties associated with the calculation of a cut-off grade including the determination of depreciation and the amount of pre-determined profit to be included in the cut-off grade calculation are outlined in the text. The proposed solution to determine optimum ore reserves and plant size for new properties avoids the complication of calculating a cut-off grade by computing a series of ore inventories using arbitrarily selected cut-off grades. A comparison of the cash flows generated by production from such ore inventories using incremental financial analysis clearly indicates the ore reserve and plant size which will best serve the corporation's investment and metal production goals. Incremental financial analysis of a corporation's operating mines and prospects assists management in assessing the comparative expansion and investment possibilities of each property for increasing or maintaining metal production on a long term basis.

Although chlorine oxidation has been found to be effective in destroying the CN ion, an excess of chlorine is needed to drive the reaction to completion. This often results in the formation of residual chloramines, which are toxic to aquatic life and often regulated by various states. The interhalogen, bromine chloride (BrCl), has been found to be just as effective but without the formation of persistent, residual chloramines. The hydrolysis and subsequent disproportionation of the highly-polar BrCl molecule essentially yields a solution of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and nonoxidizing hydrochloric acid (HC1). Studies have been carried out to directly compare the mechanism of CN destruction with chlorine and bromine chloride.

Adsorption experiments were conducted at two different solids loadings, to investigate the mechanism of oleate adsorption on apatite. Adsorption density at pH 10 was found to be dependent on solids loading in an oleate concentration region where surface precipitation could occur. Analysis of adsorption isotherms indicated three distinct regions of adsorption. In the region I (below the region of calcium oleate precipitation), molecular adsorption was observed. Simultaneous molecular adsorption and surface precipitation occurred in region II, while surface precipitation was predominant in region III along with some bulk precipitation. Correlation between flotation of apatite with sodium oleate and the mode of oleate interaction with the surface is established.

Blasting generates undesirable ground vibration with adverse effects on humans, the environment, and structures. Numerous studies have used various techniques including machine learning (ML) to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV) caused by blasting in surface mines. These studies used the validation-set approach to evaluate the performance of their predictive models. In this study, Random Forest (RF), Gaussian Process (GP), and Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) were applied for the prediction of PPV using data from a large open-pit gold mine in Ghana. An ensemble model based on a stacked generalization approach was then built on these three base models to significantly improve the PPV prediction performance. The model evaluation was done using repeated tenfold cross-validation which resolves the challenges with the validationset approach for small datasets. The dataset used in this study comprised a total of 196 measurements taken from different blasting operations. R-squared ( R2 ), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the model performance. The results obtained from these models revealed that all the base models did not significantly outperform each other. However, the stacked generalization approach had a better performance, with RMSE = 0.12, R2 = 0.96, and MAE = 0.07. This approach presented an improvement over the existing methods and will be useful for highly accurate predictions of ground vibration during blast design. The application of this model will be useful for efficient and effective blast design.

In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays and machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements — such as face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation and equipment operator positioning — can have impacts on the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division for remotecontrolled continuous mining machine operators as well as haulage operators at 10 U.S. underground mines. The results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little with depth of cut but are significantly higher with exhaust ventilation. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations with blowing face ventilation. Elevated dust concentrations were observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into or counter to the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposures attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis for recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures.

In many instances, the actual production from a longwall face does not equal the planned capacity. General problem areas which have been identified include face length and panel depth, face area and gate entry roof support, face conveyor and shearer wear, outby haulage system failures, number of entries in longwall gate development and longwall move time. The performance of a longwall face is totally dependent on the interaction of these and many other factors. To explore fully these interactions, a systems analysis of longwalls has been performed. In this paper, the systems approach, the factors considered in the analysis, and the results of the analysis are presented.

The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly, if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.
