INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Other than the first Solvay plant beginning in 1884, the majority of US soda ash supplies during the 19th century came from imports. The remainder of the US supply

1.1 INTRODUCTION When underground mining involves total extraction, it induces overburden strata movements. If not properly planned it causes surface subsidence and affects surface environmental conditions. Total extraction usually refers to longwall mining and room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. Surface subsidence has long been a subject of intensive research for scientists all over the world and considerable achievements have been obtained. However due to its difficulties and complicated nature, research into overburden movement has been thus far incomplete as compared to that into surface subsidence. Since surface subsidence is a manifestation of the results of overburden movement, the processes and mechanisms of overburden movement must be fully understood in order to establish the mathematical prediction models of surface subsidence. In this chapter the processes of overburden movement and its zones of movement in the overburden will be discussed. 1.2 PROCESSES OF OVERBURDEN MOVEMENT When total extraction is used, it produces a large void in the coal seam and disturbs the equilibrium conditions of the surrounding rock strata. The roof strata bend downward while the floor heaves. When the excavated area (or gob) expands to a sufficient size, the roof strata will cave. As a result, the overlying strata continue to bend and break until the piles of the fallen rock fragments are sufficiently high to support the overhanging strata. At this tie the overhanging strata no longer cave, but bend and rest on the underlying strata. Strata bending and subsidence develop upward until reaching the surface and forming a subsidence basin. The whole overburden strata and the surface subsidence basin will further go through a period of compaction and gradually become stabilized. Current knowledge regarding the process of overburden movement has been derived from several sources. One is the direct observation of the mined sections and their surfaces, another from field monitoring of strata movements in the overburden, and others from computer modeling and scale modeling in the laboratory. For example, Figs. 1.1 and 1.2 show the results of a borehole monitoring experiment (Borehole B-2) using the full profile borehole inclinometer and full profile borehole extensometer for lateral displacements and vertical subsidence, respectively (Conroy and Gyarmaty, 1983). The panel, 400 ft wide by 5000 ft long and 630 ft deep, was extracted from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam which had an average thickness of 54 in. The face advanced from east to west. Curve A in Fig. 1.1 shows the inclination of the borehole when it was 45 ft ahead of the face at Position A (i.e., on the solid coal side). The total deviation of the borehole was 1/7000. The first shear movement occurred at 130 ft above the coal seam and appeared to have occurred along the bedding plane with large contrast of rock strata on both sides, i.e., sandstone vs. shale. When the face had passed the borehole 79 ft at Position B, the borehole deformed to assume a bow shape with a maximum deviation of 2.8 in. from the center line. Numerous shearing planes occurred and extended further upward. When the face had passed the borehole by 75 ft at position C, strata subsidence was measured. Fig. 1.2 shows that a strata separation as large as 4 ft occurred at 40 to 100 ft above the coal seam. Above this level, the strata subsided more uniformly with bedding separations within 1 to 2 in. Another example is the longwall mining with complete caving in the Soviet Union's Karaganda Coalfield (Kolebaeva, 1968). The coal seam was 6 ft thick and 154 ft deep. The immediate roof was the fine-grained sandstone interbedded with coarse-grained sandstone. Above this, there was sandy shale and shale. In order to monitor the process of overburden movement, 15 stations were established in a borehole (Fig. 1.3). The elevations of those stations were measured when the face was at various distances from the borehole. Fig. 1.3 shows the movement history of each station. For convenience of comparison, the movement history of each station was plotted on a common reference point as shown in Fig. 1.4. Clearly, the movements of strata from Station # 1 to #6 were nearly simultaneous, i.e., they behaved as a single unit. The strata from Station #7 to # 15 had differential separations, the maximum of which was 40 in. As the face passed by and moved away, strata separations in general reduced gradually. But strata separation between Stations #12 and #13 remained the same until the end of the monitoring period. The total bed separation between Station #7 and # 15 reached 11 in., approximately 18% of seam thickness, when the face was 132 ft beyond. Based on the above observations, the author developed a conceptual model of overburden movement due to underground longwall mining (Fig. 1.5). The above-mentioned two case studies illustrated that subsidence in the overburden strata propagates upward and subsidence velocity decreases from the bottom to the top. When the subsidence velocity at the surface reaches the maximum value, the subsidence velocity at the bottom portion of the overburden strata has decreased considerably and the strata have begun to compact. Bed separation occurs within a certain distance above the coal seam and reduces from the bottom to the top. When the face has moved away, bed separation reduces gradually, so that eventually some beds completely close and others partially close. Bed separation reaches the highest level when the subsidence velocity at the surface is at its maximum value. For instance in Fig. 1.4 surface subsidence velocity was maximum when the face was 38 to 44 ft past the point. At this time the total bed separation was maximum. Overall the strata directly above the opening are subjected to tension in the vertical direction. But above a certain level, all strata move nearly simultaneously. There is also significant shear movement along some bedding planes. 1.3 ZONES OF MOVEMENT INTHEOVERBURDEN After the extraction of a longwall panel or room and pillar section of sufficient width the strata in the overburden are subjected to various degrees of movement from the bottom to the top. According to the movement characteristics, the damaged overburden can be divided into four zones (Fig. 1.6). Caved Zone. After the extraction of coal, the immediate roof caves irregularly and fills up the void. The strata in this zone not only lose their continuity completely, they also lose their stratified

The main constituent of the feed to the "Sulphide Section" (31 t/h), in the F. Sartori Plant (6000 tid) of the Miniere di Mon)eponi(Sardinia), is the ore of the Campo Pisano -Funtanaperda Mine (1 ? Difficulties have always been experienced in the treatment of this ore, owing to the extramely fine Pyrite-Sphalerite intergrowth and to the high Pyrite and soluble salts contents. The first mentioned difficulty was overcome with a rather complex flowsheet (see fig.1A and lB)(2); the others with a reagent combination that required a pH of 11 in a pulp loaded with soluble salts. This meant high consumption of alkalizer, and also of the other reagents; furthermore the alkalizer had to be mainly NaOH with only minor amounts of lime, because the latter tended to depress not only the pyrite but also the middlings, which were supposed to float. With dialchylditiophosphate alone as a collector, a lower pH could have been used, but a certain amount of amylxanthate was indispensable to promote flotation of the middlings. On the other hand, a bulk-flotation of sphalerite and pyrite at low pH could not be very advantageous on account of the high pyrite content in the feed(3).

The attenuation of Fe3+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ is presented as a function of metal ion concentration, amount of collophane, initial pH and conditioning time. TCLP results for Pb2+contaminated collophane are presented. Mechanisms of adsorption for divalent and trivalent species are suggested.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. A digital computer program has been developed to mathematically simulate the effect of limited changes in feed rate on the grinding circuit of an operating mill. The data on which the program is based was supplied by the staff of the mill in question. Samples taken around the complete grinding circuit were analyzed for solids content and particle size distribution for two feed rates. Matrix models were used to represent the grinding units: rod mill and pebble mills. Parameters for these models were computed using a method developed by Mular(l). Classifier parameters were computed by the Powell search method(2) for the Plitt model (3) . The simulation program, which permits the computing of the size distributions in the circuit resulting from the changes in feed rate between the two measured values, assumes that a linear relationship exists between the corresponding parameter coefficients. The program uses an iteration method to bring the simulated grinding circuit to a steady-state material balance for any specified' feed rate between those measured. The program is, in addition, extremely fast and economic in computing time. The results show that the simulations are not everywhere consistent with practice. For example, higher feed rates on simulation predict finer products. These errors are shown to be attributable to anomalies in data gathering techniques. An improved sampling procedure for grinding-circuit data gathering is suggested for future simulations of this type. It is concluded that the

Computers are becoming increasingly valuable tools in the mining industry as a greater variety of appropriate hardware and software becomes available, combined with greater acceptance by management, Within a given time period an engineering staff can evaluate or design a project to much greater detail and higher accuracy by utilizing computers once suitable programs have been developed. We are all aware that throughout the world the decreasing grade of minerals coupled with increasing waste to ore ratios necessitate larger capacity, longer term mining operations and attendant higher capital costs. Computers can be of assistance in all stages of mineral exploitation, from geologic exploration through mine feasibility studies and design, to marketing and transportation. Because of the high speed with which data can be digested and manipulated by computers, preliminary information from any stage of investigation can be analyzed to assist in further guidance of that stage. By use of preliminary mine feasibility studies, financial forecasts and sensitivity analysis, even information from a far-removed phase such as marine transportation of the product, can help guide the exploration phase to a realistic target.

C. Hertzler The difference of means of milling characteristics by rock and ore type is tested in a statistical manner in the paper. The null hypothesis being tested is that the sample means of two different populations are equal. It is assumed that the null hypothesis is true when performing the test. Because of this, acceptance of this hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are equal (or there is no significant difference between the sample means), not that the samples come from the same population, as the author asserts. Rejection of the null hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are not equal. A P value for this test is reported in Table 2 and is incorrectly identified as the probability that the two samples came from different populations. Actually, what was recorded was 100(1 - p) where p is the usual p-value. The usual p-value measures, on a scale of zero to one, the extent to which the data agree with the null hypothesis. It is the probability of observing a value of the test statistic (Z score) that is at least as contradictory to the null hypothesis as the one computed from the sample data (McClave and Dietrich II, 1982). The author makes no mention of the fact that were these tests to be conducted together, the chances of determining that the null hypothesis is not true when it is really true are increased considerably (Snedecor and Cochran, 1980). This is a multiple comparisons problem and should be dealt with accordingly. The usual methods involve adjusting the level of the individual tests. Table 2 reports an incorrect 100(1 - p) value in the comparison of concentrate grades for other rock types with .30 to .69 % Cu vs other rock types with .70 + % Cu; 86 % should be 98.6 %. Although the article can be criticized for poor data presentation and discussion of that data, the point the author makes regarding the use of these statistics in the ore reserve estimation process is well taken. It does not appear that inaccuracies in the statistical interpretations have hindered that usefulness. Miller After reading Ms. Hertzler's comments, it appears that the differences noted were basically semantics. If the paper is ever presented at a math symposium, some changes will be needed. When deciding the best way to present the data to mining engineers and geologists, I decided that presenting the probability that the two sample groupings came from different populations (reverse to the Null hypothesis) was easier and would require less verbage to explain. Hence, the 100(1 - p) difference which was noted. Ideally, I would have preferred to give the recovery and concentrate grades, then comment which ones had significant differences. Unfortunately, Kennecott Corp. did not grant permission to publish the ore body's actual recoveries and concentrate grades. The conclusion is that there was, as expected, a relationship between the ore's geologic properties and the metallurgical properties, and by determining this relationship, the overall mineral model was greatly improved.

Heap leaching is a simple means of recovering copper from oxide and oxide-sulfide ores. Although this method requires relatively low capital investment, it suffers from low copper recoveries and relatively high acid consumption. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine what factors influence these shortcomings, and (2) to establish a basis of correlation. between laboratory and field testing. The principal methods of leaching copper ores at the present time are heap, dump, in-place, and vat. A number of references are presented in the bibliography on the theoretical and practical aspects of these methods. In the heap-leaching method, crushed or uncrushed oxidized copper ore is placed on a prepared drainage pad. Acid leach solutions are dis¬tributed over the top of the heap, caused to percolate downward through the ore bed by gravity, and are drained from its base. The leach duration is generally a matter of a few months. Dump leaching is used to recover copper from very low-grade oxide-sulfide pit-waste materials. Here again, leach solutions are, percolated downward through a heap. However, in this method, little or no acid is added to the leach liquors, prepared drainage pads are not used and the leaching cycle is generally measured in terms of several years. Leaching agents are usually autogenously generated by the breakdown of sulfide minerals within the dump.

Introduction After two decades of contraction and consolidation, the uranium industry has seen a recent major expansion. Rapidly increasing uranium prices and the ability to raise speculative capital in share markets worldwide have brought over 300 new participant companies into the uranium industry: “juniors” as they are known. These companies participated in a global land rush for known deposits as well as for prospective land positions in order to secure a “piece of the action” for their respective portfolios. Mostly publicly-traded companies, these “juniors” have captured the attention of world’s investing public with spectacular gains; as much as 1,000s of percent in less than four years. The initial phase is over, however, and these companies must now prove that they can be successful in exploration or production.

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch's work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch's work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.

Most mineral processes currently in use, such as flotation, spirals, gravity concentrators, etc., are only effective over a small range of sizes, hence the upstream need for technology to accurately classify fines by size. The Pansep’s design is revolutionary. Slurry is fed onto connected mesh sections that move without bending or vibration, in a circular motion. Both sides of the screen mesh are utilized, so Panseps are self-cleaning and has half the footprint of other mesh-type screens. Developed in South Africa in 1997, the Pansep has proved itself very effective as a wet fines screen to effectively classify fine mineral fractions from 50 to 2,000 micron (325 to 10 mesh).

A 9-meter-long drift was constructed in the unsaturated-fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain to evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing a finite volume of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations, and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

Without a doubt, the scope of China?s coal boom has been nonstop. Despite the world economic slowdown, China?s year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) jumped 10.3 percent year-on-year in 2010, boosted by a faster than expected 9.8 percent expansion in the fourth [ ] quarter. And, the first quarter of 2011 expanded another 9.7 percent. According to a frequently cited statistic, the country is building two mid-sized coal plants each week. This amounts to a yearly increase equivalent to the entire power grid in the United Kingdom. China?s coal production was doubled in the last 10 years, from 1.044 Gt (1.15 billion st) in 1999 to 3.2 Gt (3.52 billion st) in 2010. This is 3.2 times the U.S. production (986 Mt or 1.085 billion st) and nearly half (46.3 percent) of the world?s total coal production (6.91 Gt or 7.6 billion st). This rapid increase of demand for coal has made China the world?s largest coal importer in 2009. With the economic situation improving, this trend is expected to continue.

Administrative and legal appeals to permits and environmental documents can delay project start-up and add tremendous cost to mineral development. This paper will discuss controversy and present a number of environmental management tips to minimize the potentials for delay and to lessen the impacts from government and anti-mining pressures.

Following the recession of 2001, restrained consumer spending, declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output, and increased unemployment led to a lack-luster year in the domestic economy. In 2002, the U.S. real gross domestic product (GPD) grew only 2.4%. Significant production declines in the U.S. metals industry were registered by copper, lead and zinc producers. Steel producers, despite a slight improvement in shipments, continued to face strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. Homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors— major consumers of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above 2001 levels. A strong U.S. dollar relative to other national currencies continued to weaken the competitive stance of U.S. metal and non-metal mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.
