"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce risks of coal dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this NIOSH study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust (<75 µm diameter) in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity. Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing, and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle is operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings can be used to select sprays and design spray arrays to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. INTRODUCTION Coal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 microns in diameter, are deposited in return entries of coal mines and can be re-entrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; NIOSH, 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (CFR, 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal dust-fueled explosions. Water sprays are both effective and widely accepted as a method for controlling underground coal mine dust. In fact, water sprays are considered to be the most economical and technically feasible means of reducing dust concentrations in underground coal mines (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Barker and Humphreys, 1996). Sprays are used in several ways to control dust in mining processes: inhibiting dust formation, immobilizing dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, and capturing airborne dust (Cheng, 1973). Reductions in airborne dust concentrations have frequently been attributed to inertial impaction between water droplets and dust particles, forming larger agglomerates which then quickly precipitate out of the airstream (McPherson, 1993). Inertial impaction activity is generally accepted as the major capture mechanism for airborne particles larger than 0.5 µm in diameter. It is this mechanism that is evaluated in this study."

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain&apos;s famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,&apos; and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

"Federal regulations require refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). NIOSH research has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with RAs because they have a limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex and is not easily defined analytically nor experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in RAs, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA. The test results show that when moisture was introduced into the tests to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average measured internal air temperature at midheight increased by 7.7°C, 9.4°C, and 10.5°C, and the RH approached 95%, 94%, and 88%, respectively. For the dry tests when no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 8.4°C, 10.3°C, and 12.6°C, respectively. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who cannot escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the thermal environment inside the RA. The metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the CO2 scrubbing system will cause the interior air temperature to increase. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The internal thermal conditions can subject miners to heat stress, which can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death depending on duration and magnitude of exposure. MSHA regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature does not exceed 35°C (95°F) when the RA is fully occupied [1]. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Before a mobile RA can be deployed at an underground mine for emergency usage, it must be tested to show that its internal AT when fully occupied will not exceed the 35°C (95°F) limit. For practical reasons, RA manufacturers usually conduct their tests at above-ground test facilities. To investigate RA thermal response in an in-mine environment, NIOSH conducted multiple 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA in its underground coal mine facility. The work described in this paper could be used by RA manufacturers to determine a final temperature rise based solely on dry and time-reduced testing."

"National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics, and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input, and published literature. Jackleg drills are involved in more ground fall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill. Jackleg-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Alternatives to jacklegs for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings are not yet available. Small mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jacklegs are being used. JACKLEG DRILL Description The term “jackleg drill” is a generic name for a class of handheld, rotary, percussion rock drills that are equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust for the drill (Figure 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jacklegs are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in) [Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012]. Jacklegs typically weigh 460 N (103 lbs), but their weight can approach 535 N (120 lbs) after they are fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses [McKibbin and Clark, 2001]. In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in) diameter holes 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock. Application The jackleg drill is primarily used in underground mines when the size of the ore body, the ground conditions, or the mining method do not permit large openings to be mined using mechanized equipment (e.g., narrow vein mining). Jacklegs are used to drill blast-holes for explosives and also holes for installing ground support. These versatile drills are used in nearly all phases of mining including exploration, development, production, and maintenance [Kurt, 1982; Williams et al., 2007; Chen and McKinnon, 2012]. The jackleg is used to drill holes in rock using drill bits attached to hollow steel bars called drill steels (rotary percussion drilling). After the hole is drilled, the jackleg can be used to install different types of ground support components, depending on the ground conditions and the specific ground support measures that are needed. For example, the jackleg can be used to install expansion-anchor rockbolts or resin-grouted rockbolts using the drill’s rotary-motion feature. On the other hand, the jackleg can also be used to install friction-type Split-Set™ rockbolts using the drill’s percussion (hammer-motion) feature. As shown in Figure 1, various washer-like bearing plates can be installed along with these bolts to provide additional ground support and to help secure surface control products, such as wire mesh and shotcrete that are in turn used to retain small, loose material between the bolts [Clark, 2012]."

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

"Lindgren (1933) defined a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks associated with large quantities of gold and rare earth elements (REE) that extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Texas and eastern Mexico. The North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt since has been exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits. In New Mexico, Mid-Tertiary alkaline to calc-alkaline rocks are found with seven types of deposits in these districts: (1) polymetallic epithermal/mesothermal veins, (2) gold-bearing breccias/quartz veins, (3) Cu-Au, Au and Mo porphyry deposits, (4) skarns and carbonate-hosted deposits, (5) iron skarns and replacement bodies (with some gold), (6) gold placers, and (7) Th-REE (with some U, Nb) epithermal veins. Some of New Mexico’s largest gold and REE deposits are found within this belt. Their origin is not well understood, but a compilation of new data (age dates, isotopic and chemical analyses) allows for a better understanding. The diversity of igneous rocks and associated mineral deposits along this belt suggests that this region is characterized by highly fractionated and differentiated; multiple pulses of magmas and involves both upper mantle and lower crustal sources. Once magmas and metal-rich fluids reached shallow levels, local structures and wall rock compositions determined distribution of and final style of intrusions and resulting mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION Lindgren (1933) was one of the first geologists who noted that a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Trans-Pecos Texas, and eastern Mexico (Fig. 1) and that these rocks contain relatively large quantities of gold, fluorine, zirconium, rare earth elements (REE), and other elements. Since then, the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt has been explored and exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits, especially gold. The North American Cordilleran alkaline belt is a north-south belt of alkaline igneous rocks and crustal thickening, roughly coinciding with the Great Plains physiographic margin with the Basin and Range (Rio Grande rift) and Rocky Mountains physiographic provinces (Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Bonham, 1988; Thompson, 1991a; Richards, 1995; McLemore, 1996; Jensen and Barton, 2000; Kelley and Luddington, 2002). Deposits within this belt have produced significant amounts of gold in the United States and Canada and include Cripple Creek, Colorado (702 metric tons of gold production), Black Hills, South Dakota (235 metric tons gold production) and Landsky-Zortman, Montana. In New Mexico, the North American Cordilleran alkaline belt extends from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Raton, southward to the Cornudas Mountains, in the northern Trans-Pecos alkaline belt (Fig. 2). The alkaline-igneous related mineral deposits in New Mexico have been referred to as Great Plains Margin (GPM) deposits by North and McLemore (1986, 1988) and McLemore (1996, 2001). Alternative classifications by other workers include Au-Ag-Te veins (Cox and Bagby, 1986; Bliss et al., 1992; Kelley et al., 1998), alkalic-gold or alkaline-igneous related gold deposits (Fulp and Woodward, 1991a; Thompson, 1991a, b; Bonham, 1988; Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Richards, 1995), porphyry gold deposits, and the North American Cordilleran belt of alkaline igneous rocks (Woolley, 1987; Mutschler et al., 1991)."

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine (CM) with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations in an exhaust curtain working face. CFD models utilizing species transport model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The study illustrates the gas distribution in the slab (second) cut. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The models were validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. This paper describes the validation of the models based on experimental data and the gas distribution results of the CFD models. INTRODUCTION To control methane gas and dust concentrations on continuous mining operations, it is important to provide sufficient quantity of fresh air from the end of tubing or curtain to the active face. In this region, operating machine-mounted water sprays and fan-powered, flooded bed scrubbers can significantly increase the amount of airflow reaching the face [1-3]. However, when an entry is large, especially in higher coal seams, the water spray configuration and the scrubber capacity may not be adequate to maintain sufficient forward airflow to confine the dust cloud to the face. Dust can roll back toward the machine operator as a result [4]. Currently, several coal mines having negligible gas emissions in higher coal seams (2.4 to 3.0 m [8 to 10ft.] thick) with exhaust tubing systems redirect the scrubber discharge back towards the face in an effort to improve dust collection. NIOSH studied the redirected scrubber exhaust techniques for dust and gas control in a full scale CM gallery to assess its potential for industry-wide application [5]. For a CM face, previous studies have concluded that the behavior of gas and respirable dust is a complex process. The distribution/dispersion and transport of gas and respirable dust after they are liberated at the face are governed mainly by their mass properties, the movement pattern of the ventilation air, and interactions with the mining machine and water droplets created by the external water spray systems used for dust control [6-10]. To understand these behaviors in a complex CM environment and to evaluate the effectiveness of various control techniques, numerical modeling has become a necessary supplement to laboratory experiments and field studies."

The world&apos;s largest grinding mill operates at the Cadia Hill Mine in Australia. Svedala Industries supplied the 12.2-m- (40-ft-) diam, 20-MW Cadia gearless, semiautogenous grinding mill (SAG). This was a leap of more than 40% above the largest operating SAG mill. This article reviews the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation and operation of this mill. Description of the Cadia project The Cadia Hill Mine is located 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Orange, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The mining lease covers about 3,100 hm2 (7,660 acres) of the Cadia Valley. The Cadia deposit is a large, homogeneous, low-grade, porphyry-type, gold-copper resource. Current reserves stand at 202 Mt (222 million st), grading 0.73 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.17% copper. They contain 146.2 t (4.7 million oz) of gold and 347 Kt (382,500 st) of copper. The operation consists of openpit mining and ore processing to produce gold bullion and a gold/copper concentrate. The operation processes 17 Mt/a (19 millon stpy) of ore to produce 91 kt/a (100,300 stpy) of concentrate and 9.1 t/a (293,000 oz/year) of gold. The plant operates two 12-hour shifts a day and had a targeted availability of 94%. The plant facilities include a copper concentrator, o water supply system, an openpit mine, tailings pipeline and dam, and a concentrate pipeline and dewatering facility located in Blayney, about 35 km (22 miles) from the concentrator. Significant features of the process plant include o primary crusher and stockpile, a reclaim conveyor system feeding, the Cadia SAG mill (Figs. 1 and 2) and two 6.7-m- (22-ft-) diam ball mills (Fig. 3). A portion of the gold is extracted in a gravity circuit. The balance is extracted with the copper in the flotation section of the plant. Concentrate is thickened and piped about 35 km (22 miles) to the filter plant and rail loadout facility located in Blayney. Tailings are pumped to a tailings dam and process water is reclaimed from the tailings dam. The water system is designed to control and capture available runoff from local creeks, and to store these waters in dams and weirs. In addition, a major portion of the water for the process plant is treated effluent from the city of Orange and a smaller portion from Blayney Mill selection. The low-grade ore posed a dilemma for Cadia. To achieve a satisfactory economic operation, large-scale processing was required. The selection of the mills, equal to the largest designed and operated at the time, gave a plant configuration consisting of two 11.1- x 5.8-m (36- x 19-ft) SAG mills and three 6.1- x 9.1-m (20 x 30-ft) ball mills. This configuration did not provide the most satisfactory economic model for the project. A review of the single line configuration indicated that a significant reduction in the overall capital cost of the plant could be achieved by increasing the size of the mills and reducing the quantity. Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors: (1) sample collection and preparation, (2) counting techniques, and (3) operational definitions of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples and are summarized in Table 1. The analytical procedure and detail required in the analysis vary with the definition of asbestos. Accordingly, this may be the only type of environmental analysis where the definition of a substance dictates the choice of analytical methods, and the rigor demanded of the analysis. Lead, arsenic, or beryllium are sub- stances having a constant definition and the method of analysis chosen depends on the concentration and precision required. However, the meaning of the term asbestos fiber is dependent on the eye of the beholder. Macroscopically, asbestos has certain physical properties that make it highly useful. Rockforming minerals do not display similar characteristics. Now, the question arises as to how three definitions of asbestos came into being. This is a result of two factors: (1) the definition of asbestos on any scale intrinsically involves the morphology or shape of the material, and (2) the advent of the transmission electron microscope permits detection of asbestos fibers and other mineral fragments in a size range where the physical properties of asbestos such as tensile strength, flexibility, or thermal resistance are difficult, if not impossible, to measure. There is a good deal of controversy about which definition is most appropriate for regulatory purposes because of a lack of appropriate health effects data (Cooper, 1978). Most differences of opinion center on the questions surrounding the following: 11 Morphology-Is a 3:l aspect ratio an appropriate medical or physical lower limit for the definition of an asbestos fiber? 2) Length-Are asbestos fibers shorter than some arbitrary length (5 pm) as hazardous as longer fibers? 3) Mineralogy-Is the mineralogical distinction between asbestos and nonasbestos minerals medically significant? While these questions are directly resolvable only with the biological and health effects data, ultimately such data reflects the ability of analytical procedures to fully characterize the materials used in health effects studies on animal models, and to monitor the exposure to particulates with different physical attributes in the workplace or community (Cooper, 1978). The following sections outline the analytical problems involved in distinguishing the asbestos and nonasbestos varieties of the same mineral; the analytical procedures available for identifying asbestos and measuring its concentration in environmental samples; the ability of these methods to distinguish asbestos fibers from nonasbestos particles; and their precision and reproducibility. Finally, we suggest some future directions in terms of definition and procedure that would greatly improve the quality of such analyses. ASBESTOS VS. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY World mineral trade during 1960 to 1984 has shown substantial changes both in value and tonnage. Although fuel commodities dominated total mineral trade during this period, this paper will focus attention primarily on nonfuel minerals. Brazil and Australia, modest producers of iron ore in 1960, have become dominant producers and exporters, together accounting for about half of major iron ore exports in 1984, far surpassing traditional export suppliers such as Sweden. Australia has also become the largest producer and trader of bauxite and alumina, and worldwide alumina trade has increased at the expense of bauxite trade. Similarly, shipments of ferroalloys have increased more than shipments of ores such as those of chromium and manganese. Canada, retaining its first rank in world export of zinc, has become also the leading source of potash and sulfur in world trade, and South Africa has been the dominant factor in chromite, manganese and their respective ferroalloys. Developing countries&apos; share of world copper trade has increased, with Chile maintaining first rank, but developed industrialized countries have continued to dominate production and trade of lead and zinc. Phosphate, sulfur, and potash have been the principal crude nonmetallic minerals traded worldwide. Looking to the near future, dramatic increases in export of iron ore, phosphate, potash and sulfur are not envisaged. Bauxite exports will continue to decline relative to alumina but at a slower rate than in the recent past. Zinc concentrate will continue to be exported but lead will be traded more as metal than as concentrate. For iron and steel, there will be some production shift from traditional producers to certain developing countries and recently industrializing developing countries such as Brazil, India, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan. In the following sections dealing with specific commodities, it should be understood that information is presented only on the major forms of each commodity that move in trade, and only for a selected group of countries for each commodity or major form of each commodity. Thus, totals shown or mentioned generally represent only the totals of figures presented here and do not include estimates for minor forms of material or for countries that are not listed. However, the data provided is regarded as sufficiently complete to reflect major patterns and trends, and exclusions are there- fore not seen as affecting conclusions that may be drawn from the material provided. FUEL AND NONFUEL TRADE Values of Fuel and Nonfuel Trade The value of world export trade in major mineral commodities (ores, concentrates and scrap, crude minerals, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, nonmetallic minerals and mineral fuels) in 1983, the latest year for which comprehensive data are available, was reported by the United Nations in May 1985 to have totaled over 514 billion current U.S. dollars (Table 1). This was 79% of the historic record high of nearly $649 billion ,current dollars set in 1980, but almost 18 times the current dollar value reported for 1960. [1/] The value of these 1983 exports in constant 1960 dollars was $164 billion (Table 2), only 66% of the record 1980 high of almost $250 billion, and only about 5.7 times the 1960 dollar level.

"INTRODUCTION For many automation and safety tasks in open cut and underground scenarios it is crucial to have highly reliable distance measurements at hand. These measurements can for instance be used to obtain the exact position of a machine in one-, two- or even three dimensions. Research and development has shown interest in the ultra-wide-band technology (UWB) in recent years. While for this technology short range, high speed data transfer is the current main research focus, the technology can also be used for highly accurate ranging applications. Due to the use of a very wide frequency band, it is robust against disturbances of many types (e.g. EMC, rain, dust etc.) and is therefore attractive for the use in mining applications. The wide frequency band also offers benefits for ranging applications. Especially in environments with strong multipath problems such as in underground mines it is possible to focus on the dominant signal propagation path, thus increasing the reliability of the measurements. [1] State-of-the-art UWB ranging equipment claims precision within the range of a couple of centimeters and working ranges of more than hundred meters. At the Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany a modern UWB system was examined in several laboratory and real life tests to examine the feasibility of UWB bases ranging equipment in mining applications. UWB TECHNOLOGY The term ultra-wide-band denotes radio systems that use an ultra-wide frequency band. A common definition for UWB radio systems is that it needs to work on a frequency bandwidth of more than 500 MHz or a bandwidth equal to 20% or more of the center frequency [1]. Due to the ultra-wide frequency bandwidth UWB systems overlap the frequency spectrum of narrow band radio technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other mobile communication systems which use a defined carrier frequency onto which information is modulated on (e.g. by using frequency or phase modulation). In order to not conflict with these other radio applications, it needs to be ascertained that the transmission power of a UWB system on a given frequency is so low that narrow band systems are not affected by it. As opposed to this only a small fraction of the UWB system’s bandwidth is affected by the narrow band system. The unaffected remaining bandwidth is sufficient to reconstruct the original signal, even if additional noise is present. Figure 1 shows the power spectral densities of popular radio standards [6], [7], [8]. A significant driver of research and development of UWB systems has been wireless high bandwidth communication. Using an ultra-wide frequency band is highly desirable here, as the channel capacity is dependent on the bandwidth. So far systems have been realized especially for short distances (e.g. wireless USB or Wireless HDMI) but beyond that, communication systems for long distances (several kilometers) are possible [2]. Advances in semiconductor technology led to a reduction in power dissipation of such systems. This enabled higher integration levels which in turn facilitated smaller solution sizes for space constrained applications [3]. Nowadays, UWB is also used for high-precision ranging applications [4], [5]."

"In the Netherlands, the Dutch Tunnel Standard has been developed for the execution of road tunnel projects. The Dutch Tunnel Standard is based on the Dutch Tunnel Law (WARVW) which sets the minimum safety standard for road tunnels in the Netherlands. Uniformity of tunnels and the uniform perception of a tunnel by its users leads to a higher safety level. Therefore, several items in the Dutch Tunnel Standard are specifically developed to ensure safety in emergency situations through the plane of human factors. Taking human factors into account is important in regular traffic situations, but in an emergency situation, this can be vital. In this paper, the development and contents of the Dutch Tunnel Standard are explained in the first part and in the second part, the systems related to human factors are described. DUTCH TUNNEL LAW AND THE NEED FOR THE DUTCH TUNNEL STANDARD In the 90’s of last century and the early 2000’s, several serious accidents occurred in tunnels in Europe. These accidents involved fire and led to many casualties. After these accidents, the European Union decided to change the regulations for tunnel safety, leading to the EU directive 2004/54/EG. The primary goal of this directive is, that casualties are minimized in case of a calamity in a tunnel (e.g. fire). In the Netherlands, the EU directive led to the development of the tunnel law and a tunnel regulation (in 2006) to prescribe the safety features required for a safe tunnel. The new Dutch tunnel law – cited in the Building Act – was meant to make tunnel design easier – but resulted at first in the opposite effect. Tunnel design in the Netherlands and design standards of Rijkswaterstaat Rijkswaterstaat – the executing organisation of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment – is the owner of the tunnels in the Dutch national motorway network, thus owner of the majority of the road tunnels in the Netherlands. In the early years of tunnel building in the Dutch national highway network (approximately 1950 – 1970), Rijkswaterstaat was not only owner, but also designer of its own assets. Most Dutch tunnels are submersed tunnels, because these type of tunnels provide a cost-effective way to make river crossings. Another type of tunnel that is used, is a TBM tunnel. Because of the geological conditions in the Netherlands (merely clay/peat and sand), there are no NATM or drill-and-blast tunnels in the Netherlands. Since the last decades, land tunnels (covered roads) are becoming more common to provide for multiple use of surface space and to meet more modern environmental regulations as traffic increases near densely populated areas. Tunnel lengths in the Netherlands vary from 500 m to 1.5 km for river crossings up to 6 km for the Western Scheldt (bored) tunnel. The lengths of land tunnels vary from 500 m up to 3 km. With these increasing lengths, some safety topics and design topics arise, topics that were non-issues in the past, when tunnels were only used as river crossings."

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe&apos;s climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe&apos;s population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. INTRODUCTION The basic purpose of this paper is to suggest procedures and practices to insure that no employee working in a uranium milling operation receives exposure to radioactive, toxic, or other materials or agents that might produce a permanent, deleterious effect upon his physical health and well-being. This program is also designed to insure that each employee can carry out his assigned duties without risk to his health or to that of his fellow workers. The assumptions underlying this program are by necessity, conservative, with emphasis being placed upon prevention rather than correction or reaction to an undesirable situation. The limits specified-either as Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), Maximum Permissible Concentrations (MPCs), or Radiation Protection Guides (RPGs)--represent both standards of best practice and those of law and regulation. The total program is envisioned as a balanced combination of occupational hygiene and radiation monitoring. This includes surveying, air sampling, personnel dosimetry, bioassay, medical surveillance, epidemiology, and training--all backed by a thoroughly tested and evaluated set of emergency procedures. The program, as presented, is keyed to the results of monitoring, surveying, air sampling, medical surveillance, and epidemiology--it being obvious that no problem can result when no hazard can be identified. The lack of an identified hazard, however, does not negate the need for such a program and prudence suggests the need for routine surveillance programs in the best-designed facility. [The Model Mill] The model mill used in this paper is that presented by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in its study of the uranium fuel cycle1. The model mill processes 600,000 metric tons of ore per year into 1,140 metric tons of U308 as yellowcake per year using an acid leach process. Other characteristics of the mill such as location, tailings dam design, number of light water reactors supported, and geographical location are not pertinent to this paper. The usual remote western location of these facilities produce some difficulties in delivering the required occupational medical services and is not within the scope of this paper. The operating lifetime of most mills is commonly estimated as from 12 to 15 years in actual practice; however, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated a 20-year lifetime for its model. The principal steps in the acid leach process include :2 (a) Ore is blended and crushed to pass through a 2.5 cm (one inch) screen. The crushed ore is then wet ground in a rod or ball mill and is transferred as a slurry to leaching tanks. (b) The ore is contacted with sulfuric acid solution and an oxidizing reagent to leach uranium from the ore. The product liquor is pumped to the solvent-extraction circuit while the washed residues (tailings) are sent to the tailings pond or pile. (c) Solvent extraction is used to purify and concentrate the uranium. (d) The uranium is precipitated with ammonia and transferred as a slurry. (e) Thickening and centrifuging are used to separate the uranium concentrate from residual liquids. (f) The concentrate is calcined and pulverized. (g) The concentrate or yellowcake is packaged in 208 liter drums for shipment. This process is illustrated in Figure 1.3

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People&apos;s Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China&apos;s mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China&apos;s most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China&apos;s metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world&apos;s largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China&apos;s large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. In addition, mining recovery rates in China average about 50%, significantly

Only South Africa can be considered in terms of resources of amphibole asbestos. There are two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province (producing only crocidolite), and one in the Eastern Transvaal (producing only amosite). This chapter discusses the banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs, and the genesis of the fiber is briefly reviewed. Also, the properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300 000 t of arnosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production chat could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. The mining methods are also reviewed and evaluation techniques are discussed. The only two types of amphibole asbestos exploited at present in South Africa are amosite [the white colored amphibole asbestos) and crocidolite (the blue colored asbestos). As is well known, crocidolite has been mined in South Africa from the early part of this century, and amosite since the early 1930&apos;s. Since these dates, asbestos mining has developed into a significant mining industry. The annual production of crocidolite is approximately 170 000 to 200 000 t. and amosite production is in the region of 80 000 to 100 000 t. CLASSIFICATION OF AMPHIBOLE ASBESTOS Four types of amphibole asbestos are produced economically in the world today: (1) crocidolite, the fibrous equivalent of riebeckite, (2) arnosite, the fibrous equivalent of grunerite, (3) trernolite, and (4) anthophylite. The names trernolite and grunerite apply equally to the crystal and fibrous forms of these minerals. For comparison and clarification purposes, the six known varieties of asbestiform minerals known in the world are shown in Table 1. All the asbestos minerals were originally developed as cross fiber seams in veins or fractures, or were controlled by the lithology. Post- fiber effects caused slip, sheared, and folded fiber seams. Crocidolite and amosite occur in banded ironstone of early Proterozoic age of the Transvaal Supergroup. The fiber seams are developed in certain defined lithological units in the banded ironstone sequence. The lithological units have a remarkable lateral persistence with respect to their chemical nature and physical appearance. Vertically, the banded ironstone sequence displays a heterogeneous nature. Commercial Applications The features and properties that make amphibole asbestos commercially attractive are: 1) The long average length of the fibers is good for greater wet strength in composites. 2) The high tensile strength of crocidolite makes it superior to all other types of asbestos. 3) It is characterized by dispersion in most liquid media, particularly amosite in water. 4) Since the surface charge of amosite and crocidolite is negative, the fibers produce an open lattice work in water with a high bulk volume giving excellent filtration rates and rapid drainage in a wet asbestos cement mix. 5) The insulating properties of amphibole asbestos mats are still important, particularly in a corrosive environment, despite the introduction of many other synthetic insulating materials. 6) Corrosion resistance, particularly acid corrosion resistance. 7) Due to the high modulus of amphibole fibers, resins reinforced with these fibers exhibit

The most valuable gem- quality red beryl comes from the Wah Wah Mountains of south-western Utah (Fig. 1). Red beryl occurs as a secondary mineral in topaz rhyolite. Marketable crystals from the Wah Wah Mountains have been produced from the Violet Mine, operated on a limited scale since 1976 under the ownership of the Harris family of Delta, UT. From 1989 to 1995, production from the mine amounted to more than $3 million with an inventory of several million dollars of unsold gems (Harris, 1995). In 1994, Kennecott Exploration leased the mine and surrounding claims to determine reserves and feasibility of gem recovery. Mining and exploration activity are continuing. Previous work on red beryl has dealt mainly with crystallographic, chemical and optical properties of the crystals (Shigley and Foord, 1984) with only general descriptions of the geology (Ream, 1979). However, the conditions needed for formation of red beryl have not been well constrained. It is generally proposed that beryl originates by precipitation in fractures and vugs from high-temperature gases as they are released from slowly cooled rhyolite lava. Dozens of topaz rhyolite flows and domes, similar in composition to the beryl-bearing flow in the Wah Wah Mountains, occur across the western United States (Christiansen et al., 1986). All of these flows devitrified to form vapor-phase topaz and locally other vapor-phase minerals such as bixbyite, garnet, hematite, pseudo-broo- kite and fluorite. But the occurrence of beryl is rare. Even within the rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl, the productive open pits comprise only a small fraction of the surface area of the flow. Apparently, the conditions that favor the formation of red beryl are rarely achieved. Geologic setting The rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl deposit lies along the eastern flank of the Wah Wah Mountains (Fig. 1). Prevolcanic rocks consist of Proterozoic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks that were folded and thrust to the east during the Sevier orogeny. Cenozoic volcanism began about 34 Ma. It consisted mostly of large volume dacitic ash flows and lesser volumes of low- silica rhyolite and andesitic lava flows. Beginning about 23 Ma, the style and composition of volcanism changed to smaller-volume, ash-flow and dome-forming eruptions of high-silica rhyolite and trachyandesitic lava. These rocks form the Blawn Formation of which the beryl-bearing rhyolite is one member (Best et al., 1987). Abbott et al. (1983) reported a K-Ar age of 22.1 + 0.8 Ma for this flow. It is probably the oldest topaz rhyolite flow in the Wah Wah Mountains. A subsequent episode (12 to 13 Ma) of bimodal magmatism produced the Steamboat Mountain Formation. The rhyolitic part of that is locally topaz-bearing. Displacement on the late Cenozoic extensional faults that formed the north-trending mountain ranges began about 22 Ma. Geology of the Violet Mine The rhyolite that hosts the red beryl deposit is part of a flowldome complex that overlies nonwelded tuff of cogenetic origin. This rhyolite is exposed over an area of about 9 km2 (3.5 sq miles) (Fig. 1). An unknown additional portion of the rhyolite is concealed beneath younger mafic lavas and sediments.

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines&apos; (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.
