Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. Introduction Heap and dump leaching are low-cost metal production techniques that are gaining in popularity among gold and copper producers. However, the flow of solution in heaps and dumps has received little attention in the literature. This is unfortunate since solution flow is one of the few parameters subject to operator control. Thus, solution management may well influence both operating costs and plant performance. Costs aside, there are two important aspects of solution flow to be considered -the metallurgical and the hydrological. Some of the metallurgical factors have recently been discussed (Jackson and Ream, 1980; Schlitt, 1984; Schlitt and Nicolai, 1987). These cover solution application rates and methods, irrigation rates, leach-rest cycles, and nonvertical solution flow. According to Caldwell and Moss (1985), however, the hydrological aspects may be more significant than the metallurgical ones. In particular, a phreatic surface will form when excessive flow leads to an accumulation of water and the associated buildup of pore pressure within the rock pile. Such internal flooding can either originate at the foundation or at some other zone of very low permeability. The latter condition gives rise to an impounded volume of solution, i.e., a perched water table (see Whiting, 1985). Caldwell and Moss point out that a rising zone of saturation is probably the most common cause of dump failures. Of course, such failures have even occurred in heaps that were carefully prepared for leaching (Milligan and Engelhardt, 1984). Thus, flooded conditions and perched water tables represent an important safety consideration as well as having an impact on metallurgical performance. The following sections describe a case history in which a perched water table developed within a copper leach dump. The description includes background information, solution flow rates, and metallurgical data. Then this situation is compared to one involving normal drainage. Description of the leach system The leach dump in the case history is located at a shutdown open pit copper mine. It was built in two lifts, with the second added some 20 years after the first. There is little detailed information available on the initial lift. It was built with rail¬hauled waste and was generally less than 30 m (100 ft) high at the crest. The area available for leaching was about 120 m (400 ft) wide and more than 380 m (1250 ft) long. The dump surface was prepared for leaching by dozing ponds approximately 12 m by 12 m by 2.5 to 3.0 m deep (40 ft by 40 ft by 8 to 10 ft). The ponds were leached by flooding with barren leach solution returned from a scrap iron cementation plant. Based on mill feed at the time, the average waste grade was probably close to 0.4% Cu. The first lift leached well. It accepted high flows, which together with the waste grade, produced a rich pregnant leach solution (PLS). Old records indicate a PLS of "50 lb Cu/ 1000 gal," or about 6 g/L. As later drilling would indicate, such a high tenor led to dissolution of considerable scrap iron that was returned to the dump. The iron then hydrolyzed and settled out on the pond bottoms. In addition, the waste settled substantially so that the unleached crest was 3.0 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) above the ponded area. Eventually, the leachable copper was extracted and the dump became less permeable. Thus, the PLS tenor dropped until it became uneconomical. About ten years later, mining resumed and the decision was made to add another lift to the dump. This was done without giving much thought to a subsequent leach operation. Hence a 24-m (80-ft) lift was built on top of the original dump. The surface of the latter was not prepared in any way, e.g., by leveling and/or deep ripping, prior to over-dumping. Examination of subsequent drill cuttings indicated that the new lift contained about 0.2% Cu, with chalcopyrite and chalcocite (50:50) being the predominant copper minerals. Most of the chalcocite occurred as rimming on the abundant pyrite, with the pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio estimated at 10 to 1. The use of 100- and 120-ton trucks for haulage caused some waste compaction during emplacement. In addition, the host rock itself was relatively soft, being a porphyry intrusive material that was partially altered to clay. As a result of the initial compaction and clay swelling, the rate of water percolation from the new leach ponds was slow and the ponds often contained considerable standing water. Even frequent ripping failed to provide a sustained improvement in the percolation rate. The poor surface permeability was exacerbated by hydrolysis of iron salts which settled as a layer on the pond bottoms. Partly as a result of the permeability problems, metallurgical performance was not up to expectations. These had been based on laboratory tests which showed about 20% copper solubilization in two weeks. Continued copper extraction in the tests also suggested that a substantial percentage of the copper would eventually be recovered. However, the PLS grade in the actual operation peaked briefly at about 0.48 g/L Cu (4 lb Cu/1000 gal), then declined to a range of only 0.24 to 0.36 g/L Cu (2 to 3 lb Cu/1000 gal). The poor leaching was traced to a lack of oxidation of the sulfides. There were two principal observations supporting this conclusion. First, there was no evidence of any heat being generated within the dump. As discussed elsewhere (Schlitt and Jackson, 1981; Hiskey and Schlitt, 1982), pyrite oxidation is quite exothermic and the high pyrite content of the waste should have led to an increase in the temperature of the leach solution as it percolated through the rock pile. Second, there was no sign of any natural convective air flow through the dump.

INTRODUCTION The Idarado mine lies high in the San Juan Moun¬tains on the divide between the Uncompahgre and San Miguel Rivers and consists of a consolidation of a number of old and prominent mining properties through which course some famous and very produc¬tive veins. Among the better known are the Smuggler, Tomboy, Montana-Argentine, Black Bear, Liberty Bell, Virginius, Flat, Barstow, and Japan, as well as many others. Most of these veins have been extensively mined over the past century and in the last three decades the Montana-Argentine and Black Bear veins have been the backbone of the Idarado mine; therefore, the descrip¬tion of the veins is limited to them. Access to the mine is through either the Treasury tunnel, whose portal is below Red Mountain Pass on US Highway 550 at an elevation of 3244 m (10,643 ft), or the Mill Level tunnel entrance 3.2 km (2 miles) east of Telluride, CO, at an elevation of 2761 m (9060 ft). The Treasury tunnel intersects the Black Bear vein 2643 m (8670 ft) from the portal and the Mill Level tunnel intersects the Argentine vein 2179 m (7150 ft) from the portal. Mining is by shrinkage stoping from slusher sublevels. The size of the scope blocks varies somewhat, but the standard size is 67 to 76 m (220 to 250 ft) long and 61 to 76 m (200 to 250 ft) high. The mine ranks either first or second in Colorado in yearly production of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. It is 9.6 km (6 miles) from the Red Mountain plant to the Pandora plant, via interconnecting drifts and raises. There are engineering offices at both plants as a matter of convenience. The Red Mountain plant in¬cludes the company general offices, warehouse, carpen¬ter and machine shops, and mine change room. The Pandora plant consists of the mill and assay office, ma¬chine shops, and mine change room. The flotation mill has a capacity of 1632 t/d (1800 stpd), making a bul¬lion product and separate concentrates of lead, copper, and zinc. HISTORY OF THE MINE The Montana-Argentine vein was first extensively worked by the Tomboy Gold Mines Co., Ltd., a British concern. This company mined the stoped areas above the Ophir level between 1910 and the late 1920s and most of the stoped areas above the 2100 level between 1900 and the late 1920s. Gold was the principal ore metal mined. The area between the Revenue and Ophir levels was mined chiefly by the Revenue Mines Co. between 1900 and 1910. The ore was worked from the Revenue tun¬nel, which portals in Canyon Creek. Gold and silver were the chief metals recovered. The stopes between the 1700 and Revenue levels, as well as some higher stopes, were mined by Telluride Mines Inc. during the 1940s. The Mill Level tunnel was driven by that company from 1945 to 1948. Lead and zinc then became economically more important than the precious metals. In 1953, Idarado purchased Telluride Mines, which merged with the parent company in 1956. The Black Bear vein was first extensively worked by the Black Bear Mining Co. in the 1900s and by the Colorado Superior Mining Co. from about 1914 until snowslides at the mine camp [altitude 3750 m (12,300 ft)] terminated the company's operations in 1924. Leasers operated at intervals until 1934. The Treasury tunnel, formerly the Hammond tunnel, had been started before 1900 and reached the 1646-m (5400-ft) mark early in the 1900s, at which time activity lagged until the late 1930s. In the early 1940s, Idarado extended the Treasury tunnel from its heading at 1646 m (5400 ft) to the Black Bear vein and established a raise connec¬tion with the 600 level, the lowest level in the old mine. Since completion of initial work in the mid-1940s, systematic development of the mine, both in the driv¬ing of new headings and the utilization of older open¬ings, has resulted in the present extensive network of workings. GEOLOGY Introduction The oldest rocks of the area are the Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the Uncompahgre formation which are massive quartzites, some phyllites and slates, and dolomitic or limestone beds. West-dipping Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata lie on the Uncompahgre formation. These units are separated by a major angular uncomformity from overlying, essentially horizontal, Tertiary formations that include the basal Telluride conglomerate and several thousand feet of overlying volcanic rock. Intrusive rocks, mostly Tertiary in age, are common in the area, and are in the form of dikes, stocks, and sills. Dikes are very closely associated with some of the ore veins (Mayer). Description of Veins The Black Bear and Argentine veins range from 0.6 to 7.6 m (2 to 25 ft) in width, but in most places are 1.5 to 2 m (5 to 7 ft) wide. They vary in character from a well-defined tabular structure between sharp "frozen" walls, or gouge seams, to an irregular zone of quartz and quartz-sulfide stringers. Many gouge seams within the veins make the veins blocky and loose. Common gangue minerals in the veins include quartz, pyrite, rhodonite, chlorite, sericite, clay minerals, epidote, calcite, adularia, rhodocrosite, fluorite, and specularite. Quartz constitutes 60 to 70% of the veins and varies widely in character, ranging in color from clear through white, gray, and green, to amethyst. Chlorite, sericite, the clay minerals, and fine-grained quartz are common alteration products of the vein walls and of wall rock fragments in the veins. Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. "This paper presents a numerical study regarding the loads, and the corresponding damage, taken by the primary and secondary lining of a tunnel built in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. This study aims at establishing more rational design criteria that take into account explicity the lining performance. A 3.5 km long tunnel to be built in a densely populated northwest area of Mexico City, was considered as case study. Series of three-dimensional finite difference models, developed with FLAC3D, were used to simulate the tunnel construction, and to compute the ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments, and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams were used to study the lining performance. Several advancement lengths, and tunnel covers were considered to establish their impact on the loads transferred to the tunnel lining. A practice-oriented damage criterion for tunnels was proposed based on the interaction diagram analysis. INTRODUCTION Lining performance during conventional tunnelling, CT, as defined by the International Tunnel Association, ITA (ITA 2009) is strongly affected by the construction procedure. Special attention must be taken in cemented fine-grained materials, such as those found in the northeast portion of Mexico City, due to the potential of fragile failure (i.e. the soil fails suddenly without important deformation) that these soils may exhibit. During CT, it is assumed that the ground strength contributes to the stability of the excavation, as long as the lining is built correctly. It is common practice to consider two structures, which together form the tunnel support: 1) A primary lining, which is a flexible support, which allows excavation walls to deform to mobilize part of its shear strength, and thus contributes to the tunnel self-stability, and 2) A secondary lining. Commonly, the primary lining consists of several layers of shotcrete. In this case the installation method guarantees perfect contact between the lining and the excavation perimeter. The secondary lining, if required, is used to withstand the load conditions in the long term and also has an esthetic function. This paper presents a numerical study aimed at establishing a performance damage criterion for the primary and secondary lining design in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. Due to the lack of data, the strength and deformation parameters were established through empirically-derived relationships. Three-dimensional finite difference models were developed to simulate the tunnel construction, and compute ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams, along with a damage criterion were used to study the lining performance. From the results gathered insight was gained regarding tunnel lining performance during CT."

"Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."

INTRODUCTION Heat stress continues to be a safety concern in underground mining. This is due to a number of reasons including increasing depths of mining, increased levels of heat generated from machines, ventilation systems being constrained from providing suitable levels of airflow and others. In order to assess if a thermal environment is safe for miners under normal or modified work arrangements, or to specify stop work conditions a heat stress index is used to guide decisions. Historically, a number of heat stress indices have been developed and applied in underground mines. These can be classed under three broad headings; single measurement, empirically based and rational indices. Do any of these indices perform better than the others? Which one allows simple determinations and decisions to be made in the mine? This paper aims to provide answers to these questions by comparing and contrasting three indices; effective temperature (ET), simple air cooling power (ACP) and Thermal work limit (TWL) for a range of typical mining wet and dry bulb combinations? The paper concludes with the identification of areas for future research. BACKGROUND Heat stress causes discomfort, increases physiological strain, decreases productivity and performance, and contributes to increased incidents [1]. Effective management and control of heat stress is particularly important in mining where hot working conditions are very common [2]. Heat stress index is a common indicator that is used by mine safety advisors and managers to guide decisions about safe work practices in mining under normal or modified conditions. According to Howes and Nixon [3] A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: • Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. • Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environmental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. • A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The link between these elements is an environmental measure that reflects the physiological strain a worker is subjected to. Since the turn of the twentieth century various indices of thermal stress have been developed (McPherson [4], Howes and Nixon [3], Brake [5]). In selecting a suitable environmental measure or index one problem that must be addressed is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to it accurately reflecting the physiological strain. No index can be universally applied and there is no single correct measure or index. However if an index has provided adequate control in a particular circumstance, then it can be regarded as correct for that situation.

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives – HydroStar® 4208, DXG-F7® and Cyquest® N-900 – using a potentiostatic technique. The current–time data obtained at 0.16V versus the SHE were analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A/m2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current–time data from the electrolyte without organic additives, and confirmed by SEM images, indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional growth under diffusion control. None of the organic additives studied at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L with 20 mg/L chloride changed the nucleation and growth mechanism, but the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.IntroductionElectrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high-purity copper metal. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992).Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents – traditionally, guar products – are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper nodules and lead to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth and dense cathodes.Recently, the use of polysaccharides, such as HydroStar 4208 and DXG-F7, and polyacrylamides, such as Cyquest N-900, has been reported in commercial electrowinning tankhouses as replacements for guar (Ashford, Clayton and Sandoval, 2012; Robinson et al., 2013; Sandoval, Morales and Bernu, 2010). However, little information has been published on the effect of these new organic additives, especially regarding the nucleation and growth mechanisms of copper electrodeposits in their presence."

Mining in Peru is mainly concentrated on metallic and polymetallic ores of gold, copper, lead, zinc, silver, tin, iron, etc. However, little has been done to develop extensive and rich non-metallic or Industrial Minerals deposits with the exception of some silica and phosphate deposits. This paper presents the characterization and metallurgical studies for the development of a feldspar deposit. These studies showed that the special characteristics of the ore, such as high porosity, high Al2O3 content, low clays content, and sized material allowed us to obtain commercial products applying relatively simple and low cost concentrating unit operations. The characterization studies showed that the feldspar products contained no quartz and about 90% of albite (NaAlSi3O8). The 14x40-mesh size fraction product analyzed 5.91% Na2O, 22.56% Al2O3, 65.73% SiO2, 0.65% K2O, 6.50% CaO, and 0.40% Fe2O3; whereas, the 40x150-mesh size fraction product analyzed 6.22% Na2O, 24.30% Al2O3, 60.80% SiO2, 0.91% K2O, 7.06% CaO, and 0.54% Fe2O3. These products could be used for manufacturing glass, ceramics, refractory, and filters in different applications. In addition, Middlings, could be used as insulation material due to its porosity (bulk density of 0.828 Kg/dm3), analyzing 4.46% Na2O, 15.7% Al2O3, 67.2% SiO2, 2.57% K2O, 3.94% CaO, and 4.24% Fe2O3. The material showed a sphericity of 0.77, a roundness of 0.68, and acid solubility of 13.3025% on only washed and 2.72% effective for clean material suitable for use in these applications. No selective accumulation of the valuable mineral was observed at any specific size fraction. However, iron and titanium bearing impurities trended to concentrate in fine fractions (minus 70 mesh -212 µm-). Metallurgical studies demonstrated that this feldspar ore required sizing at 14x40 mesh and 40x150 mesh to render commercial products. In the case of the 14x40-mesh size fraction, the process involved magnetic separation, gravity separation, and flotation for feldspar (direct flotation) using a blend of primary and condensate amines. However, the reverse flotation for mica-biotite and iron bearing minerals was also possible using petroleum sulfonate. The metallurgical process for the 40x150-mesh size fraction required magnetic separation and reverse flotation of iron and titanium bearing minerals, the feldspar being reported in the sink material. Commercial products from this feldspar deposit for glass, ceramics, refractory, and filtration; and for the manufacturing of insulation material were obtained.

"According to research presently being conducted on selective lithium recovery in seawater, inorganic adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity for capturing lithium ions from liquid lithium resources are called lithium ion-sieves (LISs). Their low toxicity, low cost and high chemical stability make LISs suitable for lithium recovery from seawater. In the present study, the ultrathin LMO nanofibers with controlled diameter were successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique with a hypothesis that greater aspect ratio (i.e., smaller diameter) would lead to the enhanced recovery of lithium ion from seawater. Design of Experiment (DOE) and dimensionless analysis were performed to systematically optimize the diameter and morphology of nanofibers. Several complementary techniques including FE-SEM and XRD were used to evaluate the physical/physicochemical properties of the nanofibers. Lastly, the lithium ion recovery was tested for the nanofibers with different physical properties using lithium ion solution. INTRODUCTION Demand for lithium resources is increasing in many industries across the world.1-2 However, the conventional resources for lithium is very limited, and it even gets worse to secure the resources due to low grade and/or complexity of feed materials. Much effort has been, therefore, devoted to obtaining lithium from aqueous lithium resources. Several methods such as solar evaporation3-4, co-precipitation5, and solvent extraction6 have been proposed for recovering lithium from an aqueous lithium source, but there are limitations on its use; It takes a very long time or conditions such as temperature, pH and Mg/Li ratio are severe. Lithium ion-sieve (LIS) materials are considered as a good lithium adsorbent because of their unique chemical structure that can selectively separate lithium ion from brine and seawater.7- 10 Furthermore, their low toxicity, low cost, and high chemical stability make LIS suitable for lithium recovery from aqueous lithium resources. Spinel hydrous manganese oxide (HMn2O4) derived from spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) after topotactically extracting lithium from the spinel structure by acid treatment is most widely investigated LIS.10, LIS materials have been actively studied in various forms for easy handling and high efficiency (i.e. membrane11,12, foam13-14, granular15,16). Among them, the 1-D nanostructure LIS with high specific surface area is excellent in efficiency.9 In this study, we present the part of our recently submitted work17. Specifically, we fabricated systemically lithium manganese oxide nanofibers with different diameter as a lithium ion adsorbent using electrospinning technique through design of experiment (DOE). Enhanced lithium ion adsorption properties of the HMn2O4 nanofibers with different diameter were investigated in lithium liquid resources."

"The adsorption of mixed cationic/anionic surfactants with different molar ratios onto quartz was investigated. The cationic surfactant used was dodecylamine bromide (DDA), and the anionic surfactant was sodium oleate (NaOL). The critical micelle concentration values for the individual surfactants and their corresponding mixtures were determined using a platinum plate. The adsorption mechanisms of mixed surfactants on quartz were studied using contact angle measurements, flotation tests and adsorption amount measurements. At alkaline condition, NaOL depresses DDA flotation of quartz without depressing the adsorption of DDA. The molar ratio of mixed surfactants is found to be a key factor in the orientation of alkyl chains and thereby the flotation response of quartz. A mixture of 1/2 or 1/3 DDA/NaOL forms on the surface of quartz when the concentration of NaOL is higher than that of DDA. The adsorption of the mixture decreases the wetting of quartz since the alkyl chains are in chaotically orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. These results provide important insights into the adsorption of mixed surfactants onto quartz surface. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is known as an effective method of separating mineral particles on the basis of their surface chemistry, specifically their hydrophobicity. [1]. The hydrophobic particles will attach to the bubbles and rise to the top of the containing vessel to form a froth that flows over the lip of the vessel. The hydrophilic particles remain in the liquid [2]. In the process, surfactant is often used as collectors for surface modification in order to change the wetting properties of mineral particles. The primary long chain alkyl ammonium salts are the most widely used as collectors for the flotation of oxide minerals, such as quartz, muscovite, hematite, phosphate and feldspar [3, 4]. Adsorption mechanism of alkyl ammonium salts on oxide minerals has been extensively analyzed [5, 6]. Generally, the ammonium salts are adsorbed through electrostatic interaction of the polar group of the molecules with the surface of these minerals [7]. Despite many obvious advantages of the ammonium salts in low temperature resistance and hard water resisting, however, their unavoidable drawbacks, such as high sensitivity and poor selectivity for slimes, relatively high cost, have limited their applications [8]. In recent years, mixed surfactants have drawn much attention due to their superior physicochemical and surface properties than single surfactants [1, 9-11]. They have been used in many industrial processes such as dispersion/flocculation, flotation, detergent, corrosion inhibition, cosmetics, foods, paints, chemical mechanical polishing, enhanced oil recovery, and nanolithography [12]. Most of the mixed surfactants have synergistic advantage in reduction of the surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC); therefore, they exhibit spurious properties, like excellent surface/interfacial activities, and are less expensive than single mixed surfactant systems [13, 14]."

"In the present study, the effect of organic/inorganic (hybrid) polyacrylamide polymer on fine coal flotation was investigated. Raw coal samples contain about 37% of ash-forming mineral at a feed size of -75 + 38 um were subjected to flotation tests in the presence of in-house synthesized hybrid Al(OH)3-PAM at different polymer dosages and pH values. Results show a significant improvement in both combustible recovery and ash rejection at 1 ppm polymer dosage. Further improvement of combustible recovery was obtained when flotation was performed at pH 5. Interfacial properties of coal particles before and after flotation were examined through electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements of coal/water slurries. Zeta potential vs. pH curve were established and compared. In the case of raw coal/water slurry, zeta potential-pH curve resembles the ash-forming minerals (silica and clays) more than coal. After Al(OH)3-PAM-assisted flotation, the zeta potential of froth/water slurry shifted to more positive values point which strongly indicates significant removal of ash-forming minerals from coal by Al(OH)3-PAM. INTRODUCTION Coal has been a major commodity in meeting the world energy demand during the past several decades (Milici et al., 2013). According to the international energy agency, global coal demand will continue to increase for the coming decades. With increasing world population, the global electricity demand would also increase as more people would get access to basic electricity especially in developing countries (Maggio & Cacciola, 2012). Due to this increase in energy consumption, operations in coal mining and beneficiation processes have been highly mechanized to meet the demands. This mechanization has increased the quantity of raw fine coal particles produced which contain high amount of ash-forming mineral matter (slimes). Aplan et al., have reported that the major constituents of ash-forming minerals in U.S.A coal are clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite (Aplan, 1997). Conventional froth flotation for fine coal cleaning suffers mainly from two major problems: 1) Low recovery of ultrafine coal particles due to slime coating by ash-forming minerals, and 2) The lack of selectivity, which results in the flotation of middlings and entrainment of mineral fines in the froth (Polat et al., 2003). Slime coating on both valuable and air bubbles have been proposed to explain the observed reduction in flotation recovery especially when fine grinding is required. In this case mineral matter may be degraded to extremely fine or colloidal sizes thereby creating difficulty in the water clarification process such as flotation. Slimes inhibit bubble-particle attachment, and increases reagent consumption due to the increase in solid/liquid interfacial area, resulting in low coal recovery."

MUTMANSKY 30.1.1-DEFINITIONS The terms "systems engineering," "systems analysis," and "operations research," common in today&apos;s technical literature, often are interchanged because of their similar meanings. However, some differences exist which need explanation. The most convenient way to achieve an understanding of the differences is to start with the definition of a system, namely, a collection of components which interact in a specific manner to accomplish a common objective. Accordingly, a haulage truck, a computer, a missile, a mining company or a nation each may be considered a system. Systems engineering generally can be defined as the conception, planning, design and engineering of any system of interacting elements so that the objective of the system is automatically optimized. Thus, systems engineering normally is con¬cerned with systems not yet activated.&apos;,&apos; Systems analysis may be described as a scientific method of making decisions based on a quantitative or other objective evaluation of all action alternatives. It is very similar to systems engineering but usually is not considered to be restricted to problems of design prior to use. While the previous two disciplines are somewhat vague and can encompass a great variety of engineering functions, operations research can be more specifically defined as the application of mathematical models to the problem of optimizing the objective of any predefined system. Systems analysis and systems engineering are closely aligned sciences but opera¬tions research differs in the following ways. First, it generally is associated specifically¬with optimization and mathematical models while the other two often are not. In addition, it, is used predominantly on well-defined problems which can be ex¬pressed in mathematical terms. However, systems engineering or systems analysis may deal with highly complex social or governmental systems which may be ill¬defined and unsolvable by the classical methods of operations research. Finally, systems analysis and engineering always strive to look at the entire system to avoid the problem of suboptimization often necessary in operations research because of the necessity for a mathematical model. Because of his more extensive system, however, the systems engineer often is less able to find the optimal system. In summary, operations research, systems analysis and systems engineering are very similar in purpose but one, operations research, is more mathematical in nature and forms an important part of the other two activities. Other definitions which may be helpful are provided by Griffiths 3 Wilson,4 Falkic 5 Hall,2 Quade and Boucher, 6 and Flagle et al. 1 30.1.2-METHOD AND TECHNIQUES The systems or operations research approach makes use of scientific problem solving. The basic procedure comprises the following general steps: 1. Definition of the problem. 2. Construction of a model of the system. 3. Testing of the model under known conditions.

"Separation of different calcium minerals have long been an interesting and challenging problem. In this investigation calcium mineral separation is examined by: microflotation, zeta potential measurement and adsorption, using novel collectors having two functional groups instead of one. In theory, by varying the distance between the functional groups, it could be possible to preferentially target one calcium mineral by matching the spatial distance between the sites on the mineral surface. In this investigation two new surfactants have been tested to estimate their ability to float apatite and/or calcite. Preliminary findings show that an increase in distance between the functional groups favors one mineral over the other, and this might be due to differences in the mineral surface structure. INTRODUCTION Apatite is a strategically important mineral which has both great value for industrial use as a precursor to phosphoric acid; and in the agricultural industry as an important source of phosphorous in fertilizers. This has led both the European Union and the United States to recognize it as an important resource for the future. Currently there is no lack of apatite in the world, but it is important to develop the beneficiation to ensure future supply. A common problem in apatite flotation is the selectivity towards calcite, which it is commonly associated with. Although calcite is an important industrial mineral its abundance makes it not usually worth to extract from apatite ores unless it is easy to separate1,2. Both apatite and calcite are semi soluble minerals with calcium as one of their constituents. The most common way to separate apatite and calcite is to use flotation. A process that involves making the mineral particles to extract from the system hydrophobic by adsorbing a collector on the mineral surface. One way to study collector adsorption on a mineral surface is by zeta potential measurements. The zeta potential is the charge at a slip plane a short distance from the surface. By measuring the zeta potential with and without the presence of collector it is possible to investigate if the collector is present at the surface or not, a change is indicative of collector adsorption. The zeta potential of fluorite, apatite and calcite without collector can be seen in Figure 1. The small difference in zeta potential between apatite and calcite shows the similarity in their surface properties and gives an indication of their separation difficulty. One additional problem with semi soluble minerals is their tendency to slightly dissolve in the pulp and thereby change the ionic composition of the solution. This makes separation and research problematic as the freed ions may readsorb on the mineral surface and interfere with the collector adsorption on the mineral surfaces3–5."

At LKAB&apos;s plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer&apos;s interest in the reduction properties of the pellets&apos; has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. "Fine-grained hematite ore can be concentrated by the process of selective flocculation and dispersion, which relies on proper reagent selection and control of water chemistry. While many previous studies have been performed analyzing the effects of different reagents on this process in a laboratory environment, this paper focuses on investigating the water chemistry within the process in a pilot-scale continuous deslime thickener.The pH, sodium concentration, calcium concentration and magnesium concentration were varied to determine their effects on the iron concentrate grade and recovery, and the phosphorus concentrate grade and rejection in the pilotscale selective deslime thickener. The ideal pH for the iron grade and recovery of the process using a starch selective flocculant was found to be 10.5. Phosphorus rejection, however, was increased at lower pH values. Minimization of sodium concentration was shown to improve iron grade, iron recovery and phosphorus rejection. Calcium acted as a nonselective flocculant showing higher iron recovery, lower iron grade and lower phosphorus rejection with increasing concentration. Conclusions could not be drawn from the experiments that varied magnesium concentration.The zeta potential of the solid-liquid interface of particles in each sample taken was also analyzed to show relationships between zeta potential and process performance. In all cases, a maximization of the magnitude of zeta potential correlated with increased iron grade and recovery. This supports the hypothesis that a higher level of dispersion enhances the selective flocculation and separation process.IntroductionThe United States produced 53.2 million metric tons out of the 3,000 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore produced worldwide in 2012 (Tuck, 2013). With this in mind, there has been a large increase in iron ore processing research (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2013; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Halt et al., 2014; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a,b, 2013a,b; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). Of the 53.2 million metric tons produced, roughly 8 million metric tons of hematite (Fe2O3) concentrate were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (Cliffs Natural Resources, 2011). This process is the only economically viable method for concentrating low grade (< 40% Fe) fine grain (< 25µm liberation size) hematite ores. It is scarcely used due to difficulty in controlling the surface chemistry of the ore and high reagent costs (Department of Energy, 2001; Haselhuhn et al., 2013a). The process is highly dependent upon both reagent selection and precise control of the water chemistry during separation. This study shows the dependence of the process performance of a pilot-scale deslime thickener on the water chemistry in the feed slurry."

"Mine disasters, such as fires and explosions, can create a hazardous atmosphere due to the generation of carbon monoxide (CO). After a mine disaster, contaminated mine air can enter the refuge alternative (RA) as miners enter. Most built-in-place (BIP) RAs use an air delivery system to provide an unlimited supply of breathable air through a borehole which also serves to purge contaminants. In order to determine what levels of contaminants enter the RA, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Experimental Mine using groups of 5, 15, and 30 subjects entering the RA. The experiment used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas that was released into the air outside of the BIP RA to establish a uniform concentration. After the human subjects entered the BIP RA, the SF6 levels inside the RA were measured to quantify how much of the tracer gas entered the BIP RA. In tests conducted while the borehole air supply was left off as test subjects entered, interior contaminant levels were less than 3% of the exterior concentration. In tests conducted with the borehole air supply activated as test subjects entered, the interior contaminant levels were measured at less than 2% of the exterior concentration. Considering a mine disaster can result in 10,000 ppm of CO in the mine atmosphere, these percentages indicate that unhealthy CO concentrations that may lead to headaches, dizziness, and loss of judgement can occur in a BIP RA. This information will help mines make decisions concerning air locks, air delivery systems and a determination if purging mechanisms are necessary. INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and enforcement of mine safety standards (MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directs the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of RAs for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide RAs capable of maintaining a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either pre-fabricated or BIP shelters. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe, breathable atmosphere within RAs."

"South Africa possess the biggest fluorspar reserves in the world followed closely by China. In light of the current commodity downturn this paper explores the use of Dense Media Separation (DMS) as a coarse pre-concentration method for two fluorspar deposits located in South Africa in which the dominant gangue is carbonate present in the form of dolomite and calcite. Heavy Liquid Separation indicated that conventional pre-concentration of the drill core samples from both deposits would result in unacceptably high fluorite CaF2 losses. At a maximum CaF2 loss to floats of 5% the benefit of DMS would be economically marginal and difficult to justify as a conventional pre-concentrator. In light of cashflow constraints, a twin flowsheet was proposed for the sole purposes of upfront cash generation in which the majority (67-77%) of the CaF2 would report to a high grade flotation plant in 38-41% of the mass whilst the rejects would be stockpiled for flotation at a later stage. Considering the proposed twin flowsheet approach the high grade product split was achieved using DMS and this paper documents the challenges encountered and results achieved. INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the commercial term for the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2). Worldwide production of fluorspar is dominated by four countries namely China, Mexico, Mongolia and South Africa. Although South Africa is the fourth largest producer, it has the largest fluorspar reserves closely followed by China (U.S. Geological Survey, 2017a). Fluorspar is broadly categorized into two grades namely acid grade also referred to as acidspar (>97% CaF2); and sub-acid grade (ceramic and metallurgical grade) commonly referred to as metspar (=97% CaF2). Acid grade fluorspar is used for the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF) which in turn is used for the manufacture of fluorocarbons and semi-conductors in the electronics industry; metal processing; the production of insecticides, herbicides and cleaning detergents, and the manufacture of uranium tetrafluoride used to concentrate the uranium isotope 235 for use as a nuclear fuel (British Geological Survey 2010; Miller 2001). Ceramic grade fluorspar (85-95% CaF2) is used in the ceramic industry as a flux and opacifier in the production of glass and enamels. Ceramic grade fluorspar is also used to make coatings for welding rods and as a flux in the steel industry. Metallurgical grade fluorspar (60-85% CaF2) is primarily used in the steel industry as flux to reduce the melting temperature and remove impurities in steel making. Similarly metallurgical grade fluorspar is also used as flux in cement production to reduce energy consumption (British Geological Survey 2010; Miller 2001)."
