"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

"INTRODUCTION Steel sets such as H-type and lattice girders are often installed in the tunnels before the hardening of shotcrete to ensure the stability of conventional tunnels in soft ground conditions. In practice, while designing the tunnels with the help of numerical analysis, steel sets are generally considered only as temporary support elements. Only a few studies propose the direct application of composite support in the tunnel design, based on large-scale experiments and numerical analysis. In order to assess the structural performance of the composite support consisting of shotcrete and steel sets, large-scale experiments were performed on two types of arch-shaped specimens by applying the combined effects of axial forces and bending moments. Based on the experimental results, numerical analysis was performed to assess the application of composite support in tunnel design. The crown settlement, axial forces, bending moments, and load distribution in the composite support were analyzed in the light of different structural patterns. LARGE-SCALE EXPERIMENTS USING COMPOSITE SUPPORT Preparation and Procedure of the Experiments The preparation setup as well as the organized procedure of the large-scale experiments using composite support is shown in Figure 1. An appropriate geometry of the specimens was selected by considering the standard cross-section of a two-lane highway tunnel in South Korea. Under the loading conditions meant to develop the axial forces and bending moments simultaneously, arch-shaped specimens were assembled with the ends of the specimens subtending a 60° arc angle at the center of the arc circle as shown in Figure 2. The fabrication of six specimens was completed in two groups based on the dimensions of steel sets, with the first group of three specimens being reinforced by H100 (No.1, No.2, No.3) and the other three by H125 (No.4, No.5, No.6). In order to reduce the voids on the boundary of the shotcrete and steel sets, concrete was casted over the steel sets instead of using shotcrete. The specimens were designed to incorporate the uniaxial compressive strength of 21 MPa. Shear keys and steel plates were installed at the ends of the specimens, so that shear failure could be avoided at the ends and the specimens could also be protected from detachment at the fixation. Translational and rotational movements at the ends of specimens were fixed."

Since the record year of 1981 through 1985 the tonnage of weighting materials (barite and other heavy minerals) used in drilling fluids has decreased an estimated 49%. As in the past, barite still makes up over 90% of the minerals used for weighting materials in drilling fluid. Domestic production of barite has decreased 69% since 1981 and imported barite has made up over 50% of the total barite consumed since 1982. See Figure 1 for usage of barite. The number of operating grinding plants has decreased from 69 in 1982 to 39 at the end of 1985. With the decrease in demand of weighting materials for drilling fluids and an over capacity of grinding existing, prices for weighting materials have decreased dramatically. Although the American Petroleum Institute has not changed any of the specifications for barite, some users have initiated their own new specifications and have proposed to have them included in the API specifications. The exploration for and development of oil and gas dictates the level of weighting material used in the drilling fluids industry. Most forecasters do not foresee (or predict) increases in the level of drilling until the 90's. The primary or unground barite produced in the U.S. mines has a difficult time competing with imported barite due to the location of the mines. These mines are located in North Central Nevada, with small tonnages being produced in California, Missouri, Illinois, Montana and Washington. The major reason, is the difference in transportation costs from the mines versus ocean freight rates from the foreign ports to the major area of use, the U.S. Gulf. Since 1981, the production of primary barite has decreased from 2,849,000/ST (2,584,596/MT) in 1981 to an estimated 890,000/ ST (807,403/MT) in 1985(1). If it were not for the use of unit trains by some producers the production of primary barite in the U.S. would have probably declined another 20% in 1985. During the same period, of the total amount of barite consumed in the U.S., imported barite ore increased from 417, in 1981 to 65% in 1985. The major exporting countries to the U.S. during this period were China 46.27, Morocco 15.27., Chile 10%, Peru 8.4%, India 7.9%, Mexico 5.4%, Thailand 3.9% and Ireland 2.3%.

Stone is considered by many to be the premium material for beauty and durability in all kinds of construction. Its use dates to the dawn of civilization and only buildings made of stone have survived from ancient times. The use of stone relative to other materials declined from the beginning of the present century reaching a low point in the third quarter, but there has been a resurgence in the use of stone in construction during the past decade, due probably, to new techniques for producing stone, a greater recognition of its beauty and durability, and greater affluence among consumers. The aesthetic appeal of stone is attested to by the many attempts to simulate it in synthetic materials. Today, natural stone is considered by many to be the ultimate in aesthetic appeal, durability, and ease of maintenance. Consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. The US Bureau of Mines reported that the total value of US consumption in 1978 was $1 13 million and that total imports were valued at $65 million in 1979 (Anon., 1980). In 1989 consumption of domestic dimension stone was valued at $208.3 million and imports at $525 million. This dramatic increase occurred after demand had decreased at an average rate of 2.5% in the two decades prior to 1978 (Anon., 1980). More than half of the imports come from Italy, but production of dimension stone has increased worldwide spectacularly. Meaningful statistics on dimension stone are hard to acquire. The finished piece of stone is a highly value-added product, but stone may be sold as rough blocks, sawed slabs, or finished product. The same piece of stone may therefore be sold and reported three or more times. Furthermore, although the quantity of stone is most commonly reported in tons, stone cladding is more often sold by the surface area and at the same price for different thicknesses. By any measure, however, the production and consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. A significant indication of the resurgence of stone was the introduction of two new trade publications during the 1980s. Stone World (Tradelink Publishing Co., Inc., Oradell, NJ), introduced in 1984 is published monthly and Dimensional Stone (Dimensional Stone Institute, Inc., Woodland Hills, CA), introduced in 1985 is published monthly. The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. "Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

"The Riyadh Metro, commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA” - the executive arm of The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh -, forms part of a new public transport-system of Saudi Arabia’s fast growing capital city. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of Metro Line with 57 km of tunnels. Beyond the Design and Construction, an additional aim of the ADA is to introduce up-to-date methodologies and improve safety in construction projects. A systematic dilapidation survey of buildings and infrastructures was a prerequisite for designing the required instrumentation and monitoring tools. Site investigations required of existing methodologies and the use of geophysical methods for achieving reliable results. Large diameter TBM tunneling is challenging in hot weather conditions and karstic ground. The present paper shows how modern technologies for underground construction are introduced into the local industry and gives an outlook on future projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. INTRODUCTION Riyadh, the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a fast growing city with more than 5.7 million inhabitants. The growth of the city is linked to the recent history of the Kingdom, where some initial milestones from the 1950’s can be highlighted: Revenue generation from the exportation of oil from the Kingdom; downstream investment of oil revenue in the reconstruction and development of the Kingdom; a general plan for the settlement of the Bedouins; the provision of a public electricity network for the city; the opening of the Riyadh - Dammam railway corridor providing a link from the capital to the Eastern Region; the commissioning of Riyadh airport (converted to Riyadh airbase, after the opening of King Khalid International Airport in 1983); and the relocation of ministries and other central government agencies in 1955. In 1974, The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA”, established in 1983 is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions. The ADA’s president is a member of the High Commission (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city of Riyadh."

"Underground continuous mining machines pose a difficult safety challenge since their operators generally work in close proximity to these machines in very restricted spaces. Intelligent software for use with magnetic proximity detection systems has been shown to accurately locate workers around mining machinery in real time. Calibrating these systems requires the manipulation of a lot of data to determine the calibration constants. Researchers have developed software to analyze, convert, and visualize data acquired during this calibration process to more accurately model magnetic fields and their interaction with the environment. This paper details the background, development, and operation of the resulting application software focusing on the utility of the graphical user interface to visualize the magnetic field calibration data. The refined data developed by this process can then be utilized by the proximity detection system to more accurately identify the location of miners working in an underground mining environment. INTRODUCTION Roughly half of the electricity consumed in the United States is produced with coal, and roughly one-third of all US coal production comes from underground mines [1]. Over the last century underground mining health and safety has seen a continuous and dramatic improvement. However, machine-related injuries and fatalities continue to be a major safety concern [2]. Every year, hundreds of miners are severely injured while operating underground mining equipment, and 39 miners have been killed in striking/pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines (CMMs) since 1984. CMMs, such as the one shown in Figure 1, are large mobile machines that are used to mechanically cut coal in an underground mine. These machines weigh approximately 40 to 50 tons, have hydraulically articulated appendages, and are capable of moving at speeds up to six feet per second [3]. Modern CMMs are remote-controlled, yet the operator and other miners are often in close proximity to the machine. Recent research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reveals that the locations workers take relative to the CMM are usually influenced by visibility requirements and safety concerns [4]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) estimates that at least 28 fatalities involving CMMs since October of 1984 may have been prevented with proximity detection technology [5]. MSHA further estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [6]."

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Long rail tunnels require in most cases powerful mechanical ventilations. Besides requirements related to normal operation and maintenance, operational safety always requires a high level of smoke management. Identifying the optimum ventilation concept is essential for achieving proper performance and safety while keeping investment and operational cost at a reasonable level. For the purpose of the present paper, long tunnels have a length of typically 20 km or more. This is related to the European classification of trains (TSI 1303/2014), where the maximum distance from the portals to a firefighting point and between firefighting points is limited to 20 km (only category B passenger rolling stock allowed) or 5 km (general case). From TSI 1303/2014 it can be concluded, that tunnels over 20 km require in any case emergency stations with complex mechanical ventilations. Based on the experience arising from a number of recent projects in the European area, including in particular Gotthard (GBT), Lötschberg, Lyon-Tourin (LTF), Brenner (BBT) and Gibraltar, safety-relevant issues related to the ventilation of long railways tunnels are reviewed in this paper. Amberg Engineering is directly involved in these challenging design tasks and can provide first-hand experience and know-how. As a particular highlight, special attention is devoted to the longest tunnel worldwide, the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be commissioned in 2016. THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL Overview The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be commissioned in 2016 (official inauguration on the 1st of June and beginning of regular operation on the 11th of December) and will be the worldwide longest tunnel. Its complex and powerful ventilation system is very representative for many other long tunnels and is used as reference in this paper. Therefore, a few key characteristics of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and its ventilation system will be described in some detail in this initial chapter. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) consists of two single-track tunnel tubes with connecting galleries every 312 meters. Two so-called multi-functional stations (MFS), located at roughly 1/3 and 2/3 of the tunnel length, host the key equipment for normal and for emergency operation. At these locations, double crossovers allow trains to switch from one tunnel tube to the other. An emergency station is located in each multifunctional station, allowing trains to stop in case of emergency. The general layout of the GBT is presented in Figure 1."

"The digestion of minerals in strong acids or at elevated temperatures can result in the release of large amounts of silicic acid which can polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica and gels. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether coagulants have a “lock and key” relationship with the surface of colloidal silica to help lower the concentration of these particles in solution, improve process efficiency and reduce reagent losses by minimizing crud formation. This paper investigates some of the issues caused by colloidal silica in hydrometallurgy processes and illustrates how the use of POLYSIL® coagulants has helped to improve process outcomes. INTRODUCTION Coagulation differs from flocculation in a number of ways. Coagulants are relatively small molecules that modify the surfaces of fine particles, weakening repulsive forces between them and allowing particles to stick together, while flocculants are generally molecules that are large enough to bridge the boundary layers between the particles. With flocculation, addition rate and mixing all make a difference to the flocs formed. Coagulation, on the other hand, is an equilibrium process. With coagulation it is only necessary to achieve good mixing, and coagulates will form as Brownian motion pushes the particles into each other. In real systems, this process is complete within seconds. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether based coagulants have a strong affinity with the surface of colloidal silica formed by the polymerization of silicic acid. While silica found in minerals has a low aqueous solubility, large amounts of silica as silicic acid can be released as these minerals are digested in strong acids at elevated temperatures. The solubility of free silicic acid is about 150 ppm under pH conditions typical in acid leach environments (1), so the bulk of the silica will polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica. Colloidal silica can pass through a hydrometallurgy process without affecting any of the operations. However, it can cause a number of problems. These include gelling in a leach, interfering with flocculation or crystallization, initiating crud formation (2,3,4), decreasing extraction kinetics and increasing phase disengagement times (5,6) in solvent extraction. In these cases, coagulating the silica with POLYSIL® coagulants can reduce or eliminate the problem by enabling these particles to be flocculated and removed from the solution."

"INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."

"Construction of the largest desalinization plant in the Americas has commenced in northern Chile. It is part of a several billion dollar expansion at a copper mine whose operations nearly stopped due to the challenge of securing a reliable source of water from the Pacific Ocean in a safe and environmentally sound manner. This paper discusses the risk management, design and construction of a quadruple chamber intake and outfall shaft, high capacity pump station, three 7m diameter vertically drilled marine shafts and three subsea tunnels constructed through challenging Andean hard-rock geology. The three 2.5m diameter subsea microtunnels are being mined with vertical curves through variable quality rock 30 meters beneath the ocean and retrieved in the wet from the 7m diameter marine shafts. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The battle for securing the rights to a constant water supply is a worldwide issue and nowhere is that more evident than the Atacama Desert of Chile, the world’s driest place with areas of the desert that have not seen rainfall in recorded history. The Atacama Desert also happens to be home to some of the world’s largest ore deposits which require huge amounts of water to extract and process. What available water there is comes from three main sources: deep seated wells, glacial water from the Andes Mountains, and desalinated water. Vying for water from wells and glacial streams and lakes are numerous agricultural and domestic facilities in the valleys surrounding the Atacama Desert. Environmental regulations and legal rulings have limited the amount of “natural” source water which can be used for mining purposes. Desalination plants are a known solution for combating water scarcity, albeit a costly one. The total estimated cost of constructing this desalination plant is over $3B USD, which will include a 2500lps capacity and an approximately 118km pipeline from the coast up to the mine located in the Andes. The overall scope of the project includes design, procurement, and construction packages for the 2500lps desalination plant including the seawater reverse osmosis plant, water conveyance to the mine, power transmission, the reservoir and the marine works package which forms the basis of this paper. INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. "INTRODUCTION “Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole” (Baxter and Parks, 1939) “An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence. The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling. Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive.” (McKinstry, et al., 1948). In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not alone on the number of samples but also on proper distribution of them throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Introduction The success of in situ leaching depends upon: • maintaining adequate injection and recovery flow capacities in wells, and • distributing leach solution effectively to contact and leach ore minerals within the target zone. Solution balance is an important indicator of the capability of a particular in situ hydrologic design to efficiently and effectively control and distribute leach solution within the target ore zone. As part of ongoing hydrological investigations into in situ leaching, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is studying factors affecting solution balance in an unsaturated copper ore deposit at the Cyprus Casa Grande Mine. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of hydrogeologic features and in situ operating conditions on changes, during leaching, in: • solution storage within the deposit, and • solution balance. At the Casa Grande Mine, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility, solution balance estimates are obtained for 10 selected intervals during 17 months of leaching under a variety of well configurations, pressures and flow conditions. Operational and geological description The Casa Grande Mine is located 32 miles south of Casa Grande, AZ. The mining area is within the Casa Grande Deposit, a porphyry copper stock consisting primarily of an intensely-fractured, granodiorite cap overlying a copper sulfide base. As a result of mine dewatering activity, unsaturated conditions existed in the deposit prior to leaching (Schmidt et al., 1990; Friedel and Schmidt, 1991). No groundwater was present in any of the in-situ-leaching, test-facility wells after drilling and prior to leach solution injection. Also, no ground water seepage occurs in the test-facility drift. The Casa Grande, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility consists of 58 injection and recovery wells collared in an underground drift. The wells were drilled at various angles into the granodiorite deposit in a series of 15 divergent fans (Fig. 1). The fans are 12.5 ft apart and lie parallel to one another between the 900- and 1100-level drifts. Each fan contains three to five wells drilled at angles ranging from 6° to 89° from the horizontal. The wells can operate in an injection or a recovery mode. Currently, 36 flow sensors and 28 pressure transducers (part of a hydrologic, data acquisition system) are used to continuously monitor injection-well flow rates and pressures.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).'O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

From the initial planning phases to the closing of a mine, mining is an industry where high attention, care, and sensitivity are needed in every step of the mine life. Since mining projects have a long-life span, exceeding a decade sometimes, managing a whole mine project is challenging, especially when challenges faced due to generational differences are considered, such as tracking and logging data, or the usage of different engineering solutions change over time. Along with the overall hardship caused by the time put into a mining project, the present-time operations are very costly where each minute counts. In present-time operations, every decision made, and every minute used during planning and operations has an impact on the efficiency, safety, and economics of the project. Having extremely harsh conditions in both the excavation and mineral processing operations not only slows down the processes but creates very dangerous environments that need to be handled with precise safety measurements. To support the already established processes, we could implement new technologies and use them to our advantage. Virtual reality (VR) is one of these technologies that we could implement in the mining industry. VR is a technology that emerged in the 1960s creating virtual environments and platforms. The user experiences these virtual environments from head- mounted headsets to rooms with 360 screens, all with different levels of immersion. These higher levels of immersion, create a higher level of presencemaking the users more engaged in the activity they are trying to accomplish. These two factors of immersion and presence are what make VR unique and beneficial. VR has some applications and case studies in the industry along with some research being conducted in universities. Unfortunately, there has not been a comprehensive literature review or analysis regarding only VR and its implementations for the mining industry in the last 5 years. This paper aims to describe what VR is and its relation to the mining industry, in the most recent years. The paper first gives a brief background on what VR is and its key concepts. Secondly, it will give information on how the initial stages of the literature review were conducted and the findings along with discussions. The paper will finish with the conclusion drawn from the discussion and potential future work.

"Bridgestone Americas opened the company’s first U.S.-based giant off-road radial (ORR) tire plant in November. The 139,000-m2 (1.5 -million-sq ft) plant, located on a 222-ha (550- acre) site in Aiken County, SC, will produce radial tire products, including 157-cm (63-in.) tires, used on mining and aggregate haul trucks.The plant, announced in 2011 as a $970-million investment, represents the largest investment that Bridgestone has made in the United States, and is also the single largest investment ever made in South Carolina. Although it had already been producing tires for a few months, the plant officially opened with a ceremony in November 2014, attended by South Carolina federal, state and local elected officials, as well as Bridgestone personnel from the United States and Japan. Prior to the Aiken County plant’s construction, all of Bridgestone’s giant ORR tires were manufactured at its Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu facilities in Japan.Kurt Danielson, president of Bridgestone’s U.S. & Canada Commercial Group, said the facility was built to primarily serve the North American mining and aggregate industries in a more efficient manner. "It’s a real change for us," he said of the U.S.-based plant at its opening ceremony. "This allows us to have a true global presence."The Aiken County plant is intended to allow Bridgestone to meet customer demand for ORR tires, Danielson said. "It really frees up our other plants in Japan to service the rest of the world, allowing us to serve our customers faster," Danielson said. "As soon as we build (a tire), we can have it to our customers."Tires manufactured at Bridgestone’s Japanese plants could spend up to a month in transit to the American continents; from initial mixing of the rubber and other compounds to being warehoused, tires manufactured at the Aiken County plant can be ready to ship in four to five days.Danielson said most of the tires built in Aiken County will be used by customers on the American continents. "We will export," he said, "but our desire is to use as much capacity as we can for the Americas."Ground was broken for the facility inSeptember 2011, when commodity prices were much different than today and global demand for tires had skyrocketed."

Carbon dioxide, a by-product of combustion reactions, is a greenhouse gas linked to climate change. At Michigan Technological University, we have studied the capture of CO2 using alkali scrubbing solutions in a pilot scale packed bed counter-current scrubbing column. To do this, we have simulated flue gas by combining streams of CO2 and compressed air. Real flue gas has impurities such as CO, SO2, and NOx, and has lower levels of O2 than our simulated flue gas. In order to study CO2 capture from a real flue gas, the Department of Chemical Engineering worked with the Facilities department to install a pilot scale scrubbing column in the Michigan Tech steam plant. Experiments were conducted using a sample stream of the flue gas from the boiler in the steam plant. Data collected from these experiments were compared to the data collected from identical experiments conducted on simulated flue gas in the lab. The capture efficiency of the real flue gas scrubbing column is discussed in this paper. BACKGROUND The most common equipment used to separate CO2 from a flue gas stream is a counter-current packed-bed scrubbing column. The department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University has two such pilot scale columns. In order to study the effect of impurities found in real flue gas, one is installed in a controlled laboratory using a simulated flue gas created by mixing CO2 and compressed air. This column will be used to establish a baseline for percent capture analysis and is displayed by figure 1. The second scrubbing column is identical to the first, and is installed in the Michigan Tech central energy plant. The plant produces up to 130,000 lb/hr of 80 psig steam to provide hot water and heat for campus buildings. A typical wintertime load burns around 25,000 SCFH of natural gas; this load releases 1.4 metric tons of CO2 per hour. The flue gas the steam plant produces is roughly 7.5% CO2 by volume. In order to study CO2 capture from this flue gas, a tap has been installed on the main exhaust duct which draws a sample of the flue gas into the pilot scale scrubbing column. Figure 2, a simplified diagram of the steam plant, shows that the tap was installed between the economizer and the stack condenser.
