Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

In the spring of 1959 while visiting the offices of the US Geological Survey (USGS) in the Denver Federal Center, I had a chance encounter with Paul Theobold, a former but, at that time, casual associate. Paul mentioned to me the results of his work on stream sediment geochemistry (Theobold and Thompson, 1959). Using panned concentrates, Theobold and Thompson had discovered a tungsten anomaly in Clear Creek and followed it upstream to its source on Woods Creek, a small tributary to the West Fork of Clear Creek. The specific source was a debris cone about 0.8 km (0.5 mile) upstream from the mine yard at the Urad molybdenite deposit. Because of the genetic and zonal association of tungsten and molybdenum at Climax, I found this very interesting. Accordingly, I related this information to Robert Henderson, general manager of western operations for Climax, and asked his permission to do some follow-up work. He, in turn, telephoned Frank Coolbaugh, the president of Amax, telling him of my interest and saying that, "Climax would take care of it." On my first visit to Urad, my companions (Dave Jonson, Bruce MacKenzie, and Dick Baker) and I were confronted by a "Cousin Jack" caretaker who made up for his diminutive stature by a "pistolover" that hung down almost to his knee and by a watchdog that was one-half wolf and one-half mean sled dog. We retreated discretely to Clear Creek and then climbed up the "back" side of Red Mountain by separate routes, across the ridge crest, and part of the way down the "front" side, sampling as we went. Although much of the ground was covered with snow, we found lots of puzzling but friendly looking rocks and the geochemical results were interesting. A geologic map of central Colorado showing the location of the Urad-Henderson and Climax deposits is shown in Fig. I.

Specialty sand and bentonite are produced in the plateau province from the Bidahochi Formation near Sanders, Apache County, Arizona. It appears that deposits of both sand and bentonite formed during the Pliocene in fluvial and lacustrine environments, respectively, along the west side of the Defiance Uplift. The bentonite is an alteration product of airborne vitric ash that fell or was washed into lakes. In the Cheto district, the individual bentonite horizons, which range from less than a foot to more than 10 feet thick, are restricted to the position of the medial volcanic member. Bentonite production began at the Allentown mine in 1924 and the Chambers mine in 1926. In 1933 strip mining of the extensive deposits in the Cheto district commenced. Production increased each year to a peak of 270,000 tons in 1957. As a result of the introduction of synthetic zeolites into petroleum refining, production declined. About 40,000 tons of bentonite are currently produced from the district each year. Bentonite is shipped out of State for processing into desiccants, thickeners, and acid-activated clay products. The specialty sand was derived from Permian sandstones and deposited by streams draining the Defiance Uplift. Although stream channels are usually restricted to the upper member of the Bidahochi, stratigraphically above the bentonite horizon, a few actually cut through the bentonite. The well-sorted sand, suitable for use as a proppant in hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells, is localized in elongate lenses along the margins of the channels. These lenses range from 5 to 50 feet in thickness and often extend thousands of feet in both width and length. The sand is about 97 percent silica, has a yield of 40 percent in the minus 20 plus 40 mesh size fraction, and has a roundness of 0.6 to 0.7 on the Krumbein scale. Production of this sand began about 1961. All of the current production, which amounts to about 40,000 tons per year, is sold in the petroleum-producing area near Farmington, New Mexico.

INTRODUCTION Solid-liquid separation is an important and many times a critical step (or steps) in a mineral or coal processing plant. Some examples of typical critical separations are as follows: 1. Operating a seven to eight stage CCD thickening circuit to re¬cover almost all of the caustic and alumina trihydrate values in an alumina plant. This must be accomplished with highly scaling slurries, starting temperatures of over 100°C and operate on a closed circuit system. 2. Making a filter step operate to produce a proper moisture for the balling step so that the pellet furnace can produce a proper product. Bentonite addition must be minimized and a good quality filtrate must be maintained to prevent abrasion of the internal parts of the filter. 3. Operating a closed water system in a coal washing plant so that reclaimed water containing less than one percent suspended solids is produced for reuse to maintain beneficiation ef¬ficiency. Refuse solids must also be thickened so that they can be effectively dewatered to meet state disposal requirements. 4. Recovering phosphoric acid values from a slurry containing gypsum and other gangue solids at an elevated temperature. This must be done while minimizing wash water and maximizing P2O5 re¬covery while simultaneously minimizing scale problems. While solid-liquid separations are important to overall performance in the processing plant flowsheet, it is also a significant factor in plant costs. Capital and operating costs for all the solid-liquid separation steps (includ¬ing water reclamation for reuse) in such plants are probably between 10 and 20%. Energy consumption can also be important in these separations. For example, in the copper concentrator, it is the third largest category in energy consumption, after comminution and flotation. Obviously, solid-liquid separation steps in a plant demand proper atten¬tion in design in order to achieve both optimum performance and cost. Simultaneously, knowledge of funda¬mentals are important to improve results in existing plants.

"Rock mass classification systems are often applied in many empirical design practices in rock engineering, some contrasting with the original intent and applications of these classification systems, for example, estimation of TBM performance in various ground conditions. While accurate estimation of machine performance is significantly impacted by rock mass properties, parameters used in many of the existing classifications are more related to ground support design and not rock mass boreablity. The results of many investigations on this issue have shown a weak correlation between TBM rate of penetration and rock mass classification. This limitation can be overcome by fine tuning the rock mass classification input parameters to represent influence of rock mass properties on TBM performance as has been the objective of RME or QTBM. This paper will offer an overview of the impact of rock mass on TBM performance and introduces an empirical equation for predicting performance of rock TBMs based on rock mass classification. The results of the preliminary analysis of a new model has revealed that the use of the proposed system can offer a reasonable accuracy for estimation of TBM performance in various rock masses. 1. INTRODUCTION Hard rock tunnel boring has become more or less the standard method of tunneling for tunnels of various sizes with lengths over 1.5–2 km. Estimating the performance of TBM is a vital phase in tunnel design, and for the choice of the most appropriate excavation machine. During the past three decades, numerous TBM performance prediction models for evaluation of TBM rate of penetration and advance been proposed. In brief, all the TBM performance prediction models can be divided into two distinguished approaches, namely theoretical and empirical ones (Rostami et al., 1996). The most common and recent works on this topic are summarized in Table 1. Currently, two models including Colorado School of Mines or CSM (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology or NTNU (Blindheim, 1979; Bruland, 1998) models are the most recognized TBM performance prediction and prognosis models in use around the world."

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

Mechanisms involved in the depression of the sulfides: pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite with potassium permanganate have been investigated. Flotation tests were conducted using potassium amyl xanthate, Z-6, and pine oil in the absence and presence of potassium permanganate at around pH = 6. 5 naturally yielded by the sulfides in the pulp. On the basis of crystal chemistry considerations, the amount of xanthate adsorbed by the sulfides depends on the amount of sulfur and metal ions present on the surface; thus, the avidity of the sulfides for xanthate should increase in the order: sphalerite C chalcopyrite 4 galena 4 pyrite, and the ease of depression response to the permanganate action should be in the same order. Depression of the sulfides in the system occurs primarily due to the removal of the collector ions by the permanganate ions to form manganese dioxide and dixanthogen according to the reaction: 3 M(RX)2 + 2 Mn04 + 4 H20 2 ? MnO2 + 3(RX-XR) + 3 M+2 8OH where M represents the metal ion, RX the xanthate ion and (RX-XR) the dixanthogen molecule. Results seem to indicate that the permanganate ions play a triple role in the system: (1) they convert xanthate ions into dixanthogen, (2) they further oxidize the mineral surface and (3) if present in excess, they may oxidize the xanthate beyond the dixanthogen stage with the formation of CO2, H20 and SO4. All sulfides, except for chalcopyrite, showed a depression response in the order predicted regardless of the order of addition of xanthate and permanganate reagents. Chalcopyrite did not depress as easily; this behavior may be due to the avidity of the colloidal MnO2 to adsorb Cu+2 ions on its surface, this would destabilize the colloid making it coalesce with the formation of a layer of precipitated MnO2 on the surface of the mineral. The presence of this layer would prevent further action of the permanganate ions on chalcopyrite.

The Kitsault molybdenum deposit lies along the east margin of thecoast Batholith Complex near the head of the fiord of Alice Arm. It is 800 km (497 miles) northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposit is located on Lime Creek 8 km (5 miles) from the coast on a wide dissected upland valley at an elevation of 600 m (1969 ft). It is an area of coastal rain forest with high annual precipitation and extremely high winter snowfall. Although the area is of high relief, outcrops are largely restricted to ridges and canyons. Most of the area is covered by the coastal vegetation or wet swampy upland areas. The south edge of the molybdenum deposit was exposed in a sharp canyon; however, outcrops over the remainder of the deposit were largely restricted to a few small exposures of resistant hornfels. The mineralization is related to an elliptical porphyry stock of 52.3 m.y. age which intrudes argillites and microgreywackes of the Late Jurassic Bowser Group. A circular zone of alteration, with a diameter of about 700 m (2297 ft), occurs in the north end of the stock and the molybdenite mineralization is concentrated in the outer parts of this zone of alteration. Thus, the northern part of the mineralization occurs partly in the hornfels and partly in the stock, whereas the southern side of the ring of mineralization cuts across the middle of the stock. Zoning within this system includes a central circular area of almost complete replacement of quartz plus K- feldspar and this grades sharply outward into a phyllic zone. Clay alteration is largely localized along late faults. The ring of molybdenite mineralization is partly overlapped and partly surrounded by a zone of pyrite mineralization. Some chalcopyrite is coextensive with the pyrite zone. Late polymetallic veins fill two conjugate fracture sets. These quartz veins contain galena, pyrite, some chalcopyrite, and a number of lead-bismuth sulfosalts.

Modern coal processing plants utilize multiple cleaning circuits to efficiently beneficiate different size coal fractions of run-of-mine coal. An older plant optimization approach is to maintain average product quality from individual cleaning circuits at the same level as the given product specifications for the overall plant. However, many past studies indicate that the equalization of product quality approach fails to produce the maximum plant-yield. A newer approach, known as equalization of incremental product quality, requires that the incremental product quality obtained from each circuit be maintained at the same level to satisfy the overall plant product quality. This approach ensures the maximization of plant yield while satisfying a single product quality constraint. However, while dealing with multiple product quality constraints, this approach by itself may not be sufficient to obtain the desired maximum yield. For the simple reason that the dirtiest particle (or group of particles) with respect to one quality constraint may not be the same particle (or group of particles) with respect to another quality constraint, the mass yield versus product quality relationship generated by equalizing different incremental product quality may not be exactly the same. Therefore, an additional search technique has to be utilized to determine the global-maximum value of plant yield. Thus, the main objective of this study was to utilize an emerging optimization technique, known as genetic algorithms (GA) to maximize plant yield while satisfying multiple product quality constraints. The maximum plant yield obtained from this approach was nearly same as the maximum yield obtained by the incremental product quality approach while satisfying one specific product quality constraint. The GA was applied on a coal preparation plant that utilizes four circuit operations - heavy medium bath, heavy medium cyclone, spiral and froth flotation. The results showed that using GA as an optimization process gives 2.56% higher yield that will result in additional revenue generation of $5,120,000 per annum than average product quality approach.

Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

Stope width was controlled around 3.5 feet for the narrow high grade vein system at Hollister Gold Mine. Without top access, backfill material was pumped from bottom access up into stope through a series of pipes after ore had been slushed out in each mining cycle. Backfill material was changed from one layer of low strength concrete plus one layer of high strength concrete cap to one layer of low strength cellular concrete plus one layer of high strength concrete cap. Backfill cost was cut down to 30 percent during this process. To reduce the steel concrete pipe set up and tear down time which was about 2 to 3 shifts in each mining cycle, steel pipes were left in man-way between mining cycles. Cellular concrete was firstly introduced into backfilling stopes at Hollister mine in Nevada Mining. This process including concrete pump selection, pumping pipe selection, material mixing, material mechanics and quality control were fully covered in this paper. CUT AND FILL MINING CYCLE The most flexible mining method, cut and fill (Figure 1), was used to mine the high grade, narrow steep vein system on this Northern Nevada property which is located eighty miles north east of Winnemucca. Without top access, stopes were accessed through two man-ways on each end, in which people travel ladders and material transport slides were set up (Figure 2). Each mining cycle was called a cut, from 6 to 8 feet high. Overhand sequence was used. Mining cycle started with drill and blast the middle portion of the stope, then expanded towards both ends. Broken ore was slushed into mill hole located at middle of the stope and then mucked out through bottom access into main haulage. Stope length was about 300 feet, which was restricted by slushing distance. Timber man-ways and mill hole would be raised and established for backfill and ready for the next mining cycle.

My first regular job nearly fell through. My parents were spending the summer in California and I joined them at Lake Tahoe where we were guests at the lovely summer home of the Reids of Belmont. The time went quickly but I was eager to start work so I left for Bisbee a few days earlier than I had arranged. This was lucky, as just after I left a letter came from Gene Whitely, chief engineer of Calumet and Arizona, saying that because of the depressed copper industry there would be no job. I reached Bisbee on a Saturday morning, a day or two before my 23rd birthday, July 27, 1907. The brown plastei four-story Copper Queen Hotel was only a few steps from the station where the branch railway ended. I rented the cheapest room on the top floor and, of course, there was no elevator. I soon learned how to walk up the mile of switching tracks to the Calumet and Arizona office at the Irish Mag mine. I was horrified when Whitely told me about his letter telling me not to come, but since I had not received it he relented and said I could work for a short time anyhow. I was to start at 7:30 the next Monday morning, "holding the ignorant end of the tape”-in other words being surveyor's assistant, at $100 a month. Hours were from 7:30 to 5: 00, seven days a week. I spent Sunday walking around the town. I rented a room at the Royal Lodging House, which was cheaper than the hotel. It smelled strongly of carbolic acid but that meant no bugs. INTRODUCTION The tailing dam is part of the SOHIO L-Bar Uranium Mine and Mill located about 70.8 kilometers (44 miles) west of Albuquerque in northwestern New Mexico. The dam location is shown on Figure 1. The tailing dam is one of the last upstream method dams permitted in the industry. Design and construction aspects of the project, as well as operation and maintenance considerations, are reviewed herein. Since initial construction, SOHIO Western Mining Company and Woodward-Clyde Consultants have developed several modifications and improvements in the dam's operating and monitoring procedures. This work has been done in coordination with the New Mexico State Engineer's Office and in accordance with recommendations in a report done for the Corps of Engineer's Phase I Dam Inspection Report. Modifications and improvements described should be of particular interest to owners and operators of other tailing dams utilizing the upstream method of deposition. The tailing facility was designed for a 10-year life to provide an ultimate storage capacity of 6 1/2 billion kilograms (7 1/2 million short tons) in an area of about 180 acres. A plan view of the tailing dam is shown on Figure 2. The tailing consists of approximately 75% sand size material and 25% fines (material passing the No. 200 sieve). The tailing dam includes a small earth starter dam with raises of the dam accomplished using tailing deposited by upstream method techniques. The starter dam is a homogeneous embankment about 610 meters (2000 feet) long, a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet) and 2 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) upstream and downstream slopes. The starter dam contains an internal drainage system which includes a near vertical chimney drain connected to horizontal finger drains. "More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. Increasing quantities of nutrients and pesticides in agricultural runoff in recent years has caused the more developed western nations to become concerned about diffuse agricultural pollution. Thus, the problem of diffuse pollution is of greater importance and concern for any integrated water quality management programme. The above mentioned sources and activities causing pollution to groundwater cannot be completely avoided. The best solution is to entail a firm understanding of the principles of solute transport through porous media. The complex factors that control the movement of contaminants in porous media and the resulting behavior of contaminant plume are usually intricate to assess because of interaction of many factors such as dispersion, advection, sorption, degradation, volatilization, etc. As accurate quantification of solute under field conditions is inherently difficult, the fate of nitrate and phosphate have been analyzed in laboratory column and channel studies. From the analysis of the breakthrough curves, the dispersion co-efficient for nitrates and phosphates through sandy soil was found to be 0.262 m2/d and 0.114 m2/d for column studies, 0.321 m2/d and 0.231 m2/d for channel studies respectively. The column studies revealed that the concentration of nitrates and phosphates increased steadily in the first few days (around 5 days) and then it increased rapidly after 8 to 10 days. However, it attained equilibrium after 20 days. Similarly, the channel studies revealed a steady increase in concentration of nitrates and phosphates in the first few days (1 to 2 days) and rapid increase up to 15 days and there after it attained equilibrium. In the study, one-dimensional analytical model has been developed which include the advection, dispersion, and a characteristic term called ?total elimination rate?. The comparative study of column and channel studies, and model output (in which the term total elimination rate ?K? is considered as zero) exhibited a variation of 30 to 50 % in leaching characteristics of pollutants (nitrates and phosphates).
