Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

A detailed assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) potential was conducted at the Quintette Coal Mine site in northeastern British Columbia The site is unusual in that the coal seams contain low sulphur levels as compared to eastern coals (typically less than 0.5%), and the non-coal wastes generally do not to have the potential to generate acid on the basis of static ABA tests. The presence of small iron-stained seeps on the pit walls indicate localized sulphide oxidation, while the overall mine site drainage has remained of excellent quality with extremely low levels of metals after approximately 15 years of mining. Thus the site provides an excellent comparison to more problematic coal mine sites. For the Quintette assessment, static acid-base accounting (ABA) analyses of individual samples were compared to criteria for potentially acid generating materials developed for the U.S. Appalachian coal, as well as criteria developed in British Columbia for hard rock mines. Geologic units were characterized by the percentage of samples, or weighted thickness, that was deemed potentially acid generating (PAG). Links were then made to actual seepage and water quality emanating from geologic units around the site. Seeps at the site demonstrate a large range in pH (2.32 to 8.18). The few acidic seeps (pH < 4.0) were found to contain elevated levels of sulphates, dissolved iron, manganese and aluminum, consistent with the metals typically of concern in Appalachian coal mines. Other heavy metals that were detected in acidic seeps at Quintette included copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium. The use of simple ABA tests, and comparison of individual sample results with the Appalachian and British Columbia criteria, was found to be useful in predicting the probable sources of the small localized acidic seeps.

Several years prior to 1962, it became obvious that in order to develop ore reserves below the Storke Level, it would be necessary to devise a method to facilitate the ore being lifted three hundred feet to the surface or six hundred feet to the mill. The final plans called for an underground crusher complex with two stages of crushing and a conveyor belt gallery for transport of the ore six hundred feet above, to the third crushing stage. Access into the area was gained in 1962, by sinking Five Shaft approximately one quarter mile southwest of the proposed complex site, and drifting into the area. Collar elevation of Five Shaft is three hundred feet above the 600 Level Crusher Complex. All muck was loaded into ten-ton granby cars, hoisted to the surface and dumped. (See Figure 1 for the relationship between Five Shaft and the Crusher Area) Drifting into the Crusher Area contunued until 1965 at which time the Crusher Room Cutout was started. The Crusher Access Drift (CAD on Figure 2) war driven and mining pm- ceeded according to the description on drawings marked Figure 3a and 3b. After the arch portion of the Cutout was excavated and concreted, removal of the center "pillar" commenced. This muck was removed with an Eimco 123C crawler-mounted front-end loader. (See Figure 4) A total of 576,000 cubic feet of rock was removed from the Crusher Cutout. All sup- port was afforded by grouted roofbolts on a specified pattern, as shown in Figure 3c. Crane support columns were put into place and held by braces welded to roofbolt heads. Sidewalls and endwalls were formed and concreted. (See Figure 5 for the finished product)

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer&apos;s experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. High salinity geothermal brines typically contain up to several hundred parts per million of valuable heavy metals, and because of the large potential flow of geothermal brines from future power plants, metal production as a by-product could be significant A-planned 55-MW demonstration plant near Niland, California should generate enough spent brine to contain approximately $670,000 per year in gross metal values. Lawrence Livermore Laboratory estimates (1) a Salton Sea Geothermal potential of 1300 to 8700 MW, which would translate to possible yearly heavy metal values between $5,800,000 and .$l05,000,000. Since these estimates were made on a conservative basis, this geothermal reservoir is potentially a large ore deposit. The heavy metals in order of decreasing abundance in high salinity brines from the Salton Sea geothermal field are usually manganese, zinc, iron, lead, and silver. All but manganese and iron are valuable enough to be of commercial interest. Minor amounts of copper and arsenic are also present. Although heavy metal precipitates, particularly lead, have been found in scales within pipelines and obtained from steam flashing, most of the metals remain soluble during steam production; hence removal of the valuable metals from the spent brine before reinjection in ground reservoirs is indicated. Because the heavy metal concentrations are low, a very simple and inexpensive process is required. The heavy metal value in Niland brine is only &apos; about $1 per 1000 gallons; see Table 1. The brine composition shown in Table 1 was taken from one of the brine samples used in our study. Projected post-flash brine from a steam plant has somewhat higher Zn and Pb values, but the gross heavy metal value is still less than $2 per 1000 gallons.

A worker’s personal exposure to respirable dust in occupational environments has traditionally been monitored using established methodologies which entail the collection of an 8-hour representative sample that is sent away for laboratory analysis. While these methods are very accurate, they only provide information on the average exposure during a specific time period, generally a worker’s shift. The availability of relatively inexpensive aerosol sensors can allow researchers and practitioners to generate real-time data with unprecedented spatial and temporal granularity. Low-cost dust monitors (LCDM) were developed and marketed for air pollution monitoring and are mostly being used to help communities understand their local and even hyper-local air quality. Most of these integrated sensing packages cost less than $300 per unit, in contrast to wearable or area dust monitors specifically built for mining applications which have been around for decades but still average around $5,000 each. At the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), we are leveraging the power of high-volume data collection from networks of LCDM to establish baseline respirable hazard levels and to monitor for changes on a seasonal basis as well as following any application of control technologies. We have seen the effective use and advantages of monitoring live data before, during, and after events like shift changes, operational changes, ventilation upgrades, adverse weather events, and machine maintenance. However, many factors have prevented a systematic adoption of LCDMs for exposure monitoring: concern for their analytical performance, the complexity of use, and lack of understanding of their value are some factors. This contribution outlines a one-year case study at a mine in Wisconsin USA, covering the installation, maintenance, data visualizations, and collaboration between NIOSH researchers and the industrial hygiene professionals at the mine.

The author was privileged to find employment as a uranium mill chemist for The Anaconda Company while working his way through school in the mid-1950s. He then served Anaconda in various technical and management positions until 1980. This paper describes the prevalent technologies employed by uranium producers, briefly describes various mines and mills in the U. S., and memorializes a few of the thousands of men and women who contributed to the U. S. Uranium Boom. Following isolation of uranium as an element by M. H. Klaproth in 1789, uses of uranium were confined primarily to pigments, glass coloring agents, and ceramic glazes. In 1896, Antoine Becquerel found that uranium is radioactive, releasing particles and energy as it decays. In 1898, Pierre and Marie Curie isolated radium from uranium and learned that it can be an effective treatment for some types of cancer. In 1939, it was discovered that the isotope U235 is fissionable1 . Up to this point, nearly all uranium production was from pitchblende concentrates made in Bohemia, Canada, and the Belgian Congo. In 1938, only about 5 percent (23.85 short tons) of global output was produced from ores of the carnotite mineral that were being mined in the U.S. By the early-1950s, physicists in many countries had begun to recognize the potential for nuclear chain reactions. Ernest Rutherford (UK), Frederick Soddy (UK), and Leo Szilard (US) explained transmutation of elements and formulated the principle of “atom splitting”. In 1934, Marie Curie’s daughter, Irène, and her husband, Frédéric Joliot, identified uranium as the most viable source for this new form of energy. The basic fission process was unraveled by German scientists in December 1938. After Hitler’s army seized the uranium deposits in Czechoslovakia, many feared that Germany would build the first nuclear weapon.

The economic importance of salt domes has been recognized throughout the world primarily because of oil and gas accumulations on their flanks and, to a lesser degree, for the value of their salt and potash. Recently they have become of value as hosts for cavities used to store hydrocarbons. In the near future we believe that their main value will be as a source of geothermal energy. Although tremendous effort has been expended on the understanding of the geology and physical characteristics of the strata intruded by salt domes, relatively little energy has been exerted in the comprehension of the salt dome itself. Salt domes have long been recognized as a geological heat anomaly. With respect to other sedimentary rocks, salt is a good conductor of heat. Expressing values in 10-3 cgs units, sedimentary rocks vary from 1.0 to 8.0; metamorphic rocks from 5.2 to 8.4 and igneous rocks from 3.1 to 9.8. Rock salt in its pure form has a thermal conductivity of 17. (Gussow, 1970). Thus a salt dome (Fig. Ml) can be expected to act as a conduit bringing heat vertically from deep within the Earth&apos;s crust. This was, in part, substantiated when in 1958 a horizontal core hole was drilled from within the Avery Island Mine at the 500 foot level. The horizontal hole was started where the ambient temperature of the salt was 74° F. and drilled toward the center of the dome. At the end of this 2,000 foot hole the temperature was 90° F. thus depicting a horizontal temperature gradient of 7° F./1,000 feet. Because this core hole penetrated a shear zone connate water that appeared as a "cold spot" on the temperature gradient, the foregoing data can only be regarded as indicative.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

Butler Taconite, operated by the Hanna Mining Company, is an Iron ore pelletizing operation that is located on the Western end of the Mesabi Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. The operation mines low-grade taconite ore and through primary crushing, two stage grinding, magnetic separation, agglomerating and indurating, produces 2.6 million annual tons of high quality, 66% iron pellets. Mining and stripping is done with 13 - M100 trucks and 5 - 12 cu. yd. shovels. The operating processes in the concentrator and pellet plant are primarily con¬trolled through a centralized control room and monitored by a PDP l140 computer. During 1969 and 1970, a re-organization of the Company took place. Through this re-organization, each mine unit was analyzed and studied to determine the proper staffing of the internal departments. At this time, it was decided to continue with further detailed studies of the Maintenance Department with the intent to reduce maintenance costs. Maintenance costs at the time of the re-organization were 38.6% of the total mine operating cost. The preliminary study indicated that the Maintenance Department had a system of maintenance, as a matter of fact, it had a separate system in each sub-maintenance division and in some of the sub-divisions each foreman had a system of his own. Therefore, from the data collected, it was decided to develop one system of maintenance that could be utilized throughout the entire operation. To determine the type of system suitable to all phases of the operation, detailed time and method studies were conducted. All types of maintenance tasks performed at the operation were studied. The data collected was analyzed and the recommended improved methods were reviewed with the Maintenance Superintendent and his staff. The new improved methods that were accepted as feasible, were introduced into the system immediately.

Oxidation potentials have been measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH and related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are constructed and show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide in the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of many investigations (1,2,3,4,5,6), and from these studies several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved. Wark and Cox (7) and Gaudin(8) have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues (9,10,11) have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland (12) has shown that both of these theories describe accurately the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition but fail to describe the relationship, between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart(12) suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar(4,6) has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg/liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10; these results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface.

The pressure system of ventilation with large diameter bore holes has been very effective in the ventilation of two gaseous mines, the Olga No. 1 and No. 2 Mines in McDowell County, West Virginia. The No. 4 Pocahontas Coal Seam on the Olga property lies 580 feet below the valleys. The seam is very gaseous as well as dry and dusty, which makes good ventilation all the more essential. Irregular and often extensive areas of the coal seam have been replaced with impervious shales and sandstones in "Fault" or "Want" areas. The replacement materials have sealed the methane in the coal seam and thus increased the quantity of gas that must be handled as mining is done. Often the No. 5 Pocahontas Seam comes down to meet the No. 4 Seam at the Faults and considerable methane is sometimes released from the upper seam. The factors mentioned, together with the irregular and unpredictable lateral shape&apos; of the faults, result in long narrow stringers of coal that are very gaseous and difficult to mine. So far as the Olga Coal Company is concerned, the most effective ventilation under the conditions outlined has been the use of large diameter bore holes with a pressure ventilation system. The ventilation of a mine can be accomplished in two fundamental ways. The mine atmosphere maybe reduced below atmospheric pressure by an exhaust fan; or it may be raised above atmospheric pressure by a pressure fan. In either case, the coursing of the air is so planned as to have the haulage and traveling ways on intake air. While the majority of the coal mines in the United States, no doubt, use the exhaust system of ventilation, there are several advantages of the pressure system which are extremely beneficial.

In some 35 years in the explosive and construction industries, we have probably seen the extremes in drilling and blasting practices. All of you know that it is difficult if not impossible, to separate those two operations, particularly when we are searching for an optimum. Early in my career while doing engineering survey work for a major cross country pipeline construction company, we witnessed some of the wildest blasts imaginable, and they were wild for two reasons. Both the drill hole diameter and the drill pattern were such that when loaded with explosives, the factor in terms of pounds/cu. yd. was extremely high. On the other hand, in 1982 we were in an underground coal mine where just one hole was used to prepare a 20-ft. (6m) wide face. In this coal mine, they brought down 7 yd3 (5.35m3) of coal with just 1 lb. (.454 kg) of explosive. On a pipeline job, the factor may only be .1 yd3 per lb. of explosives. Open pit operations in the same geographical area may have almost the same type of rock, but similarities could end there. The several operators over the years will have installed different size-crushing equipment or variances will exist in other facets such as drilling, excavating, and haulage units. That tells us that if we have 6 operations in that common area, we are faced with a fact that there is an optimum drilling and blasting pattern for each of those six. We start at that point. We will note from Figure No. 2 the simple equations for determining either cu. yds. or tons. For a rock heavier than limestone, it may require only 10 to 11 cu. ft. (.31m3) for 1 ton (.91 metric ton) of rock in place.

This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

Sulfonate promoters and collectors were originally developed as relatively inexpensive anionic collectors to selectively concentrate the iron-bearing minerals in low grade iron ores and to remove iron and other mineral contaminants by flotation in the processing of glass sands, feldspar and other ceramic raw materials. The first reagents produced were effective collectors for such iron oxide minerals as goethite, hematite, limonite, magnetite and siderite. Further development has resulted in additional reagents with a broadened application to the selective flotation of a variety of nonsulfide and nonmetallic minerals. The products in this group are anionic sulfonate-type promoters, natural petroleum sulfonates, and synthetic modified sulfonates. Beyond their applications to iron-bearing minerals, the sulfonate collectors have gained commercial use in the flotation treatment of barite, celestite, fluorite, apatite, chromite, industrial garnet, kyanite, mica, rhodochrosite and cassiterite. in addition, extensive laboratory studies indicate their potential suitability for flotation of the following minerals: Anatase Anhydrite Bauxite Beryl Calcite Chlorite Some Copper Carbonates Corundum Dolomite Hornblende Huebnerite Ilmenite Lepidolite Magnesite Phosphate Minerals Rutile Scheelite Spodumene Sillimanite Talc Tourmaline Wolframite Zircon Sulfonate promoters are water soluble or dispersible liquids, syrups or pastes of varying viscosity with colors ranging from dark blackish-brown to clear. Customarily, they are fed to the conditioner or flotation as 5% to 30% water solutions or dispersions. In addition to their normal collector activity, certain of these products display notable frothing characteristics. Improved collector efficiency and adequate froth control can frequently be obtained by employing mixtures of sulfonate reagents, of ten with results quite markedly superior to those achieved with equivalent dosages of the individual promoter alone. Reagent requirements will vary with the type of mineral being treated; however, a general overall range of 0.13 to 2.0 kg/metric ton (0.25 to 4.0 lb/ton) of feed should cover most applications.

In May 1998, Hanson Aggregates Midwest, as an outcome of mine planning, offered a 10-acre tract of land containing the famed fossil-bearing Silica formation, to the City of Sylvania, OH. in the form of a 99-year lease agreement. The Olander Park System, and Ohio code park operating within Sylvania Township, was then approved by Hanson and the City to manage and fund the park. All parties signed the lease in August of 1999. In November 2001, local residents voted to fund the park by a margin of 2 to 1. The park will consist of a shallow (approx. 20 ft.) former cement production quarry that is 700 ft. long by 300 ft. wide. Hanson’s motivation and vision for the park was fivefold: 1) the site was located away from long-term reserve access; 2) it would serve nicely as buffer property for the active quarry; 3) it had become an area of illegal dumping by locals in the past; 4) trespassing and safety issues would be limited by allowing supervised usage; and 5) the shallow outcropping contains the world famous, fossil-bearing Silica shale. Hanson will supply shale to the park perpetually via stripping activities in the process of uncovering quality construction aggregate limestone and dolomite reserves. Thousands of enthusiastic fossil hunters have already combed throughout the shale in their quest for “treasures”. The park’s master plan also features nature trails, picnic areas, a fossil-themed play area, amphitheater, visitor’s center and gift shop. Given the natural and people resources that Sylvania Fossil Park will have to offer, Hanson is confident that it will become the premier invertebrate fossil hunting site in the United States. It will also remain a solid community relations vehicle for years to come.

Strip mine reclamation Fs the process of restoring the land affected by the mining process to its most productive use. This can be timber production, pasture, crop land, wildlife and/or recreational use. The mining companies must determine, through the advice of their technicians, what the most advantageous use of the land will be. If the Company does not own the surface, the owner or owners must be contacted to determine their desires as to how the land should be reclaimed. Many times, in making the plans to restore an area with vegetative cover, the watershed and the quality of the water in the area is overlooked. The water itself must be an integral part of the reclamation plan. Many lakes and/or pits can be created with proper planning. In areas in the Midwest, where lakes are a scarcity, these strip mine lakes can become storage reservoirs for large amounts of water, They can help control runoff and low flow augmentation. The strip mining operation will affect the watershed regardless of whether a reclamation plan in made or not. It is up to the reclamation technician to see that the plan benefits the watershed instead of affecting it adversely. This can be done during the operation by intercepting the water before Pt enters the active pit. Diversion ditches above the highwall will handle the runoff water from the watershed. Water that does gain entry into the pit should be removed as quickly as possible. If the rules and regulations adopted by the Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission in Resolution 5-60 are followed, water encountered during the operation can be handled with little or no adverse effect to the receiving watershed.

The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the most heavily used transportation arteries in the world, handling nearly 40 per-cent of the North Atlantic shipping trade and directly providing nearly 230,000 jobs to the local economy. In 2004, $100 billion worth of consumer goods moved through the port. To accommodate future cargo volumes in the port, which are expected to double over the next decade and possibly quadruple in 40 years, deeper shipping channels are needed to provide access for a new generation of cargo mega-ships with drafts exceeding 13.7-m (45-ft) when loaded. Current channels within the harbor range in depths up to 13.7-m (45-ft), thus preventing carriers from using these larger ships, or requiring significant reductions in cargo to achieve lesser drafts to operate safely within the harbor. As part of the Harbor Deepening Project, the Anchor-age Channel would be deepened to 15.2 m (50 ft) below mean low water (MLW), for a length of 5,790 m (19,000 ft). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) owns, operates and maintains two existing water siphons in the harbor. Due to their shallow depth, both existing siphons must be relocated before dredging of the Anchorage Channel can be completed. Tom Costanzo, manager of capital programs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), says that ?While the re-location of the existing siphons under the Anchorage Channel is vital to the success of the deepening program, it is also a story of cooperation among key agencies at different levels of government resulting in improvements that will benefit the people of this region greatly.?

The use of solid state track deters allows totally passive, integrating measurements of 222Rn (radon) or of 220Rn (thoron) plus radon. A track-detecting solid is placed in a holder that is closed by a selective membrane and exposed to the atmosphere of interest to produce an accurately time-averaged record over times of interest that range typically from a week to a year. By selection of the proper membranes, dosimetry can be done for radon or for the sum of radon and thoron. A different membrane is appropriate for measuring radon under humid conditions such as are found in the ground. Large numbers of measurements have been made with these systems both in the ground, where radon levels are high, and in indoor environments, where levels are orders of magnitude less. Calibrations have been carried out at both high and low concentrations of radon. New results in the air at the site of the Shirley Basin mine and mill give reproducible results with month-long integrating periods. The off-site background levels are in the range 0.7 to 1.0 pCi/l (26-37 Bq/m3). The average yearlong on-site level is 1.5 pCi/l (56 Bq/m3); at the mill it is 2.6 pCi/l (96 Bq/m3); and the level measured at the backhoe in the open pit mine is 3.9 pCi/l (144 Bq/m3). The region of significantly elevated radon levels is confined to a radius of 1.6 km of the mine and mill. All of the on-site radon concentrations are less than but comparable to the typical values found in the living areas of modern energy-efficient homes.
