Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem. Combined permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on samples of clay bearing ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer's effectiveness in preventing the problem. Test results indicate that treating the ores with cationic polymers could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability leaching tests. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizing polymer, clay swelling tests and zeta potential measurements were made on untreated ore samples and on ore samples treated with the cationic polymer. Test results indicate the cationic polymer could reduce the degree of negative charge on fine particles and their tendency to disperse, as well as reduce clay swelling. Test results indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure during leaching, if clays and fines are kept stabilized. This may be done by treating the zone of high fluid velocity near injection wells with cationic polymers.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

The Bureau of Mines conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from fine-particle wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate ore by leaching dried wastes using a H2SO4-methanol mixture. Although phosphatic clay waste contains up to a third of the phosphate originally present in the ore, recovery of these values represents a significant challenge due to the fine grain size of the material, the particles averaging less than one micrometer in diameter. Waste samples obtained from two Florida producers yielded phosphate extractions of 71 and 84 pct, respectively, when leached under ambient conditions and at a stoichiometric acid ratio of 1.4:l. Elevated temperatures did not improve the amount of phosphate extracted. Undesirable A12O3, Fe2O3, and PlgO impurities were largely rejected; higher grade wastes gave acids that meet established industry impurity standards and lower grade samples yielded acids that marginally fell short of the standard. Separation of the crude acids from the insoluble residues was accomplished via vacuum filtration through either filter paper or commercial filter cloths. Both filtration rates and solids retention were improved by the addition of 0.5 lb/ton of poly(viny1 acetate) (PVAc) or poly(ethy1ene oxide) (PEO) to the methanol-acid slurries. These results show potential for substantially increasing the reserves of an important domestic resource.

A computerized system (SCAPEVIEWER) based on landscape indices and artificial intelligence techniques is proposed in order to classify landscape images into various categories according to the quality of the pictured scenery. Photographs (totally 108) from various landscapes have been clustered, from seven experts in accordance to the mean estimation of landscape quality, into distinctive (C1), typical or common (C2), and indistinctive (C3). For each of the landscape photographs, ten (10) environmental and operational indices have been selected and determined, corresponding to visibility (V), naturalness (N), relief (R), flora quantity (FC), flora quality (F), water (W), skyline (SL), visual entities (G), season (S), and viewer position (P). These landscape indices are fed to a classifier. The classifier is a feed forward Neural Network (NN) trained by a novel hybrid method combining genetic algorithms and the back-propagation algorithm with adaptive learning rate and momentum. A total classification rate of 93.5% has been achieved, using only 8 input neurons. The discarded input neurons correspond to the indices S, and P. The pilot system SCAPEVIEVER has shown the feasibility of landscape photograph classification into three categories (C1, C2, and C3) according to the landscape quality, selecting simultaneously the most robust indices, by means of a computerized system combining the knowledge of an expert with a NN based classifier.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the Mine Safety and Health Administration Permissible Exposure Level. Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

The Mining Division of Utah Power and Light Company is located in the coal fields of southeastern Utah -main office in Huntington, Utah. The Division will produce 6.5 million tons of low sulfur steam coal in 1988, making UP&L the largest underground mining operation west of the Mississippi. Coal is mined from three underground mines utilizing continuous miner and longwall mining methods. All coal produced by the Mining Division is utilized at UP&L's two largest steam-electric power plants, the Hunter and Huntington plants with a combined capability of 1,995,000 Kw. At UP&L we believe that to achieve success a company must have clearly defined goals which are understood, communicated and shared at each level of operation. We have also found from experience that a safe operation is generally an efficient and productive operation. As a Division, we have established a goal to achieve the safest, most efficient operation in the country. This is an ambitious goal. To achieve such a goal requires real commitment and a safety/training program capable of achieving needed results. The following is an overview of the program we have established at UP&L which has enabled us to reduce our accident frequency rate from over 40 in 1980 to 8.00 at present, as illustrated in Figure 1.

Nautilus Minerals was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in May 2006. The company now has major mining companies Anglo America (5.7%), Teck Cominco (7.2%) and Epion Holdings (22.4%) as significant shareholders, and has raised approximately $US346 million dollars to develop the world's first deep-water mine. The company is currently targeting high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization, located near plate boundaries in back-arch basins of the Western Pacific. The first mine scheduled to be developed by the company is located in 1,600 meters of water at Solwara 1, in the relatively quite waters of the Bismarck Sea approximately 50 km from the port of Rabaul, within the Territorial Waters of Papua New Guinea. During 2006 and 2007 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the world?s first NI 43-101 compliant resource statement and environmental impact study for a seafloor massive sulphide system. Permitting is well advanced for the project, with initial production scheduled for late 2010, subject to timely grant of the permits. Extensive government and stakeholder liaison and engagement has been undertaken throughout the projects life, and is a core feature of Nautilus' desire to "do it right" in all aspects of this new industry.

High angle conveyor (HAC®) systems in open pit mining offer many advantages over the traditional, truck only, haulage systems, including: (1) superior energy efficiency, (2) less dependency on petroleum products, (3) less sensitivity to inflation, (4) less labor, (5) less excavation for the amount of ore recovered, and (6) less ramp construction and maintenance costs. Previous studies had revealed the technical and economic feasibility of high angle conveyors. This paper presents the Sandwich Belt HAC® as the vital link to optimization of in-pit conveying systems. HAC development to date is discussed, beginning with studies in 1979, to the first large scale prototype in 1983, to the first commercial unit in 1984, into "the latest commercial installations. Discussion continues with the HAC systems to suit the various open pit mining operations and the corresponding characteristics of the system components, particularly the high angle conveyor. The range of HAC systems from the low capacity (up to 1,814 t/h), low lift (10.7 to 36.6M), highly mobile to the moderate capacity (1,814 to 3,629 t/h), moderate lift (36.6 to 76.2M), intermittently mobile to the high capacity (greater than 3,629 t/h), high lift (greater than 76.2M), semi-mobile, are discussed along with some possible combinations of these.

For the past few years Caro's acid has been used for the treatment of cyanide containing slurry effluents, providing a feasible alter­ naive to other slurry treatment processes including !NCO SO2 / Arr and ferrous sulfate. Presently, mines using Caro's acid gen­erate their own Caro's acid onsite making a relatively low quali­ty product. It was at this point where we, at Degussa Corporation, decided to focus our efforts on engineering a Caro's acid genera­tor capable of cost effectively producing a high quality Caro's acid solution, thus reducing operating costs significantly. Caro's acid or peroxymonosulfuric acid is not a new chem­ical nor is it new to Degussa. The product was named after Heinrich Caro (1834-1910), a German chemist who first described its synthesis and its oxidizing properties in 1898. Degussa has been producing the potassium salt of Caro's acid as the triple salt, 2KHSO5 - 2KHSO4 - K2SO4, called Caroat®, for over 30 years. Caroat® is used for household and denture cleansers, as a bleaching agent in dish washing detergents, in printed circuit board etching and for cyanide destruction in the plating industry. From our experience in producing Caroat® Degussa developed its new Caro's acid based DegOX™ technology for the treat­ment of cyanide containing effluents from gold and silver mines.

As the gold mining industry matured through the 1980' s, and into the 1990's, the development of refractory gold orebodies has become more prevalent. Newmont Mining Corporation developed and commercialized flash chlorination for the treatment of carbonaceous preg robbing ores; Homestake Mining Company developed and commercialized the industry's first application of autoclaves. Barrick installed the world's largest autoclaves on whole ore treatment a few years later. Dry grinding and roasting followed at Placer Dome's Cortez, Freeport -Independence and Newmont's Carlin operations. Today, numerous papers are presented on research efforts worldwide which address treatment of refractory gold ores by bioxidation, roasting, autoclaving, alternative lixiviant treat­ment and other novel process ideas. The overall objectives are to develop economic processes for difficult refractory ores where no process exists or conventional practice is cost prohibitive. Successful research can lead to lower operating costs, increased profits, and increased ore reserves. One such research effort directed by E I DuPont de Nemours and Company, Advanced Mining Technologies, was focused on gold ores which were refractory in nature due to the cyanide soluble copper content. Approximately five years of research effort culminated in a patented process (U.S. Patent 5,411,575)1 and the formation of a new joint venture company, AuGMENT Technologies, in 1995 with Newmont Mining Corporation. Today significant progress has been made in moving the laboratory scale tests to commercialization.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2005 was estimated to be 653 kt (720,000 st). This was a 5-percent increase compared with 2004. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $179 million in 2005. Production was from six companies with 12 processing facilities in four states. California and Nevada were the principal producing states. They accounted for about 70 percent of U.S. production in 2005. U.S. diatomite exports were about 144 kt (159,000 st). Imports were negligible. The internal structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an excellent raw material for filtration, absorbent and filler applications. Filtration, especially the purification of beer, liquors and wine and the cleansing of greases and oils, continued to be the largest end use for diatomite. Other applications include the removal of microbial contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses in public water systems, and the filtration of human blood plasma. The use of diatomite as fillers and in pharmaceutical applications, including the filtration of human blood plasma, continues to increase as has its use as an insecticide base and as pozzolan. The relative rank of end uses of diatomite were filter aids, 75 percent; fillers, 11 percent; absorbents, 7 percent and other (mostly cement manufacture), 7 percent.

R. Michael Craig Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground-water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hunder pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. For example, water levels at elevations of 455 m (1500 ft) or more above the top of the Westwater Canyon member of Reply by H.C. Juvkam-Wold In general, Mr. Craig's comments are useful and accurate regarding the potential benefits of aquifer depressurization. However, two of his points require further explanation since they may lead to a misunderstanding of my paper and its predictions. These refer to his comments regarding failure to account for storativity and to non-artesian conditions. Equation 5 is indeed Darcy's steady state equation. However, as a careful review of the appendix in this paper will reveal, I have used this equation to represent semi-steady state conditions. The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district's 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. Ieropigi Fe-Ni deposit is located in northern Greece, in Kastoria?s prefecture near Albania?s borders. A laterite profile exposed by opencast mining and placed near the basement of the mine was chosen for sampling. Ten samples, representing ?pure? Fe-Ni ore, ophiolite-bedrock, ?red? ophiolite and ?enriched? ophiolite were collected, based on macroscopic observation. The samples were analysed by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD) for the determination of the mineral phases. Iron and Nickel concentrations of the same samples were also determined by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methodology. The Fe-Ni ore samples consists predomi-nantly of hematite, goethite, chrysotile (serpentine), saponite and quartz. ?Red? ophiolite samples consists mainly of chrysotile, hematite, quartz, calcite and small amounts of paragonite and goethite. Bedrock and ?enriched ophiolite samples are comprised of chrysotile, hematite, calcite, quartz, nontronite, paragonite and sepiolite. The Fe content ranges between 13% and 49% in Fe-Ni ore samples and between 7% and 10% in ophiolite samples. The Ni content ranges between 1% and 3% in Fe-Ni ore samples and between 0.3% and 4.5% in ophiolite samples (the higher content is observed in the so-called ?enriched? ophiolite). A correlation between Fe-Ni concentrations and mineral assemblages is being attempted in order to evaluate the nickel-rich mineral phases. It is shown that the nickeliferous minerals are serpentine, hematite, goethite and saponite.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is the largest tunneling program in the history of the metropolitan Chicago area (Figure 1). Between September 1976 and September 1977, rock tunnel contracts having an estimated cost of approximately $420 million will be advertised. During the past six months, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) has awarded contracts for 16.5 miles of rock tunnels in diam of from 9 ft to 30 ft having a total bid price of $120,261,750. RECENT CONTRACT AWARDS Addison-Wilmette Tunnel $63,140,480 Upper Des Plaines #20 Tunnel 35,749,664 Upper Des Plaines #21 Tunnel 21,371,607 Addison-Wilmette Tunnel The first contract was advertised in September 1975. This contract, described as the Addison-Wilmette Tunnel, runs from Wilmette Harbor at Lake Michigan under the North Shore Channel to Addison Street in the City of Chicago, a distance of 10 miles. The contract calls for constructing approximately 27,750 linear ft of 30 ft ID and 24,020 linear ft of 22 ft ID unlined rock tunnels, excavation of two construction shafts, and the excavation of 32 drop shafts of various diam. Two hundred ninety-three companies were notified of this contract being advertised, 70 companies took out contract specifications and 3 companies ultimately submitted bids. 1. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has often taken a leading role in introducing innovative construction technologies to build its transit system. Most recently, Contract Section E-5a, which included Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was constructed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in soft ground. Along with the station and tunnels, two permanent shafts were also constructed in soft ground employing the NATM technique. This project is located within the District of Columbia on the Greenbelt Route. The subject of this paper is to discuss the unique method of construction of these two shafts, and explore the benefits of applying the NATM technique to the construction of deep shafts. The design of the shafts was performed jointly by Jenny Engineering Corporation of Springfield, New Jersey, and Mayreder Consult of Linz, Austria. The designers also provided construction support services and a resident NATM expert at the site during construction. The construction of the project started in April 1988 by a joint venture of Mergentime Corporation and H. T. Construction, a subsidiary of Hochtief Company from Germany. This $48.7 million construction project has been completed. 2. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The two NATM shafts are located primarily in Cretaceous-age deposits that are over 100 million years old. The studies reported on in this paper were initiated to draw attention to the severe contamination problem in the Section 30 drilling program at Chimney Creek. The lithologic-subset sampling study reached a different conclusion from that presented in your paper, and I wish to comment on your subsequent analysis of the data and your conclusions. Request for more complete data In the section on subsampling, you mention that the subordinate lithologies were separated and sampled, yet only the dominant-lithology gold value is plotted in Fig. 4. In a contamination study, the reader is interested in the assay values for the individual subsets. Please include a table of the subsample assay data in your reply. Also, please indicate which analytical methods were used to arrive at the gold values in the subsampling study. Turning barren rock into low-grade ore Figure 5 is very revealing and typical of all of the cross sections in Section 30. Note the long strings of low-grade mineralization spread out for hundreds of feet below the ore zones. There were some very high gold values found in certain contaminated fractions during the subset sampling. The conclusion, here, was that the distinctive, strongly-mineralized dolomite layer was probably loose and crumbly and continued to disintegrate during drilling. This caused salting of the unmineralized rock samples below.

Fire development and spread along conveyor belts in ventilated ducts were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Various types of conveyor belts used in mining applications were ignited and burned in a full-scale gallery under various flow conditions. The flame spread rates depended strongly on the ventilation air speed. The time-temperature traces of gas and belt obtained at 12 feet from the entrance show that a rapid belt surface temperature change takes place prior to a change in the gas temperature, indicating that radiative heat transfer from the flame to the belt surface plays an important role. Further, anomalies in the flame spread rate in the vicinity of 1.5 m/s air speed (i.e., much greater rate than that observed at either higher or lower speeds) can be explained through the mechanism of flame tilt and the resultant view factor between the flame surface and the belt surface. In order to correlate the fire spread with material properties of the conveyor belts (such as the specific heat, the thermal conductivity, and the pyrolysis temperature) and the fire environment (such as the gas temperature and the ventilation air speed), a theoretical model has been developed. This model is based on the experimental observation that the radiative heat transfer is the dominant mode of energy transfer ahead of the flame front. Agreement between the theory and the experimental results is good.
