The Inter-Island Tunnel is one of two undersea tunnels which are part of the Boston Harbor Clean-Up Program. The tunnel is 7.7 km (25,160 ft) long, bored to a 4.3 m (14 ft) diameter in the Cambridge Argillite Formation and was finished to a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter final concrete lining. The owner is the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) who is a regional authority responsible for overall design and construction. The tunnel's primary purpose is the transport of untreated effluent from Nut Island facility in Quincy, MA to the new treatment plant at Deer Island. Two sludge lines are installed for the transport of sludge from Deer Island to Nut Island. During construction the contractor encountered fault zones, fractured strata, and soft ground tunnel sections which liberated more ground water than was originally anticipated by the project designer. Ground water was controlled during mining and the placing of the final lining. The final lining of cast-in-place concrete had to be backfill grouted to cut off water inflows and provide contact for equal tunnel loading which is critical in long-term design. This paper deals with an engineered backfill grouting system which was the first of its type to be used in North America. It discusses the geological conditions encountered, the design criteria used in the evaluation process, and an indepth review of the various system components. It demonstrates how contractors can use knowledgeable and professional industry suppliers to solve difficult construction problems.

The sequence of events preceeding the discovery of the Mount Emmons molybdenite include some inadvertent near misses by several groups. The events are given in general chronological order to bring out the essentially contemporaneous, but different activities by several groups in two areas on opposite sides of Mount Emmons. The Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit lies in the Elk Mountain mining district. The west edge of the deposit is near the boundary between the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts as shown by the USGS map included (see Fig. 1). Considerable history regarding the Keystone silver-lead-zinc mine is given because of its proximity to the Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit which is on the other side of the mountain from Redwell Basin and where other significant activities took place. It should be noted that there was no documentary evidence available to me that would indicate that molybdenite was recognized to be present on, or under, any part of Mount Emmons, including Redwell Basin, before 1970. Veins containing silver-lead-zinc minerals were discovered in the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts about 1872. Some discoveries on the south flank of Mount Emmons about 1880 were developed into the Keystone mine. The Keystone has the largest cumulative production of metal ores of any of the mines in these districts. Most of the 413 Mt (455,473 st) of ore produced from the Keystone mine through August 1967 was produced after 1950. The ore averaged 175.4 gt (5.64 oz per ton) Ag, 2.62% Pb, 5.56% Zn, and 0.72% Cu.

The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.

Chemical and radioisotope stratification studies were carried out in an abandoned uranium tailings pile at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings, with an average thickness of 7 m over an area of 16 hectares, were deposited approximately 20 years ago on a layer of black peaty material which overlays deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sands. Geohydro-chemical investigations of this tailings area have been ongoing since 1978. The radioisotope profile study was conducted on three adjacent sites. Solid core samples, collected with a split spoon sampler at various depths, were analyzed for various chemical and radioisotope constituents. The results indicated by 2 distinct zones of stratification; an upper zone, where the constituents were uniformly distributed, and a lower zone, near the peat-tailing interface, which showed increasing concentration with depth. Within the peat layer, the concentration decreased rapidly with no significant levels of contaminant penetration below the peat layers observed, though the samples were limited. The pH profile showed that the top 5 m of the tailings have been oxidized, the average soil pH in this zone was 3.4 compared to 5 .8 underneath it. The groundwater hydrology of the system was observed to be complex showing downward and lateral flow in the dry season and lateral and upward flow during the spring and periods of heavy rainfall. The results are discussed in terms of a model based on the combined segregation and settling process of the tailings fine fraction, and the geohydro-chemical interaction of the solid and liquid phases.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL's residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990's. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.

The New York City Transit System is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year. In 1904, 9.3 route miles of New York's first subway was placed in operation in lower Manhattan. Since that date the system has grown to 230 route miles and 458 stations (See Exhibit #1). The age of the system immediately provides a clue to the nature of our construction activity. While we must always plan for the future and expand the system in the direction of the future needs in New York, a substantial amount of time and money must be channeled towards the modernization and maintenance of the existing system which provides vital transportation for 3-1/2 million passengers a day. This paper however will be directed to our New Route's Construction and, specifically, to three rock tunnel and cut and cover sections presently under construction. Currently, New York is engaged in the construction of about 9 New Route miles of structure. Briefly, the 3 Sections we will discuss are as follows: Route 131-A Section 5A is a 4 track structure in Manhattan and includes the new Lexington Avenue Station. This 1240 foot long section is located between Park Avenue and 3rd Avenue and is a combined cut and cover and rock tunnel section under 63rd Street. Route 131-A Section 5B is an intricate 2423 foot long 4 track rock tunnel section extending from 3rd Avenue to the FDR Drive under 63rd Street in Manhattan.

Ball clay production in 1991 amounted to about 800 kt (880,000 st), about the same as in 1990. 1992 estimates show a 5% decrease to 750 kt (827,000 st). This decrease continued a trend of reduced production that began after the peak of 900 kt (1 million st) that occurred in 1988. Use of ball clay in sanitary ware was about 2% less in 1992, although levels of use in floors and wall tile, dinner ware and pottery remained constant. Filler, extender and binder applications continued to be important end uses, accounting for about 17% of total market. Refractory uses maintained their market share of about 17 kt (18,700 st). Use of clay liners in toxic and waste dumps is an application widely found in Germany. However, its use has not been fully exploited in the United States. This could represent an opportunity for domestic clay producers. Tennessee remained the leading source of ball clays. Other producers were Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas. Tennessee's production, however, decreased about 3% in tonnage produced and its value dropped from 68% to 65% of total production. The ceramics division of Southern Clay Products, Inc., was bought from LaPorte plc by United Clays of Texas, Inc., a US subsidiary of Watts Blake Bearne & Co. The purchase included ball clay reserves at Troup, TX. The acquisition makes United Clays the second largest ball clay producer in the United Sates. The Jim Bridger Coal Mine, operated by Bridger Coal Co., is located in Sweetwater County, WY about 56 km (35 miles) northeast of Rock Springs. Bridger Coal is a joint ven¬ture between Nerco Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Co. The permit boundary encompasses more than 81 km'- (20,000 acres) on the western side of the Continental Divide. Since the mine began opera¬tions in 1974, it has produced about 82 Mt (90 million st) of coal while moving about 344 hm3 (450 million cu yd) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 4.5 Mt to 6.4 Mt (5 million to 7 million st) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on-site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2000-MW generating station. Electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid that includes Oregon, Idaho and northern California. Geology The mine is located on the northeast flank of the Rock Springs uplift. This is a broad, asymmetrical anticlinal feature about 97 km (60 miles) long and 56 km (35 miles) wide with a north-trending axis. This uplift separates the Green River Basin to the west and the Great Divide and Washakie Basins to the east. Precambrian rocks on the apex of the uplift are estimated to be 5200 m (17,000 ft) above the Precambrian rocks in the Green River and Washakie Basins. Normal faults with generally less than 30-m (100-ft) vertical displacement cut through the uplift. The dip of strata on the flanks is generally between 3° and 15°.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in different areas with a past history of mining activities, which is characterized by low pH (2-4.5) and significant toxic metals concentration. The main aim of the present work was to perform a process feasibility analysis in order to remove heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu) from AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) in a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly way, by means of electrowinning and biosorption. A first characterization of an Italian AMD sample was performed evidencing a zinc concentration around 2 g/L, cadmium and nickel content of about 4 mg/L, manganese of 85 mg/L and iron 190 mg/L. Electrowinning tests lead to the following metal removal after three hours treatment: Zn 99%, Ni 99.9%, Cd 99.9%, Cu 99%, Mn 87%, Fe 96%. Moreover, an high grade of purity of the metal deposit has been achieved (Zn>95%), as observed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Considering that metals concentration in the effluent was still above legal limits (in particular for Zn, Mn and Fe), a further biosorption treatment was planned in order to produce an effluent fitting environmental limits. Experimental electrowinning tests and literature multimetal column biosorption data have been used in order to perform a preliminary techno-economic feasibility analysis of the process aimed at metal removal from AMD. A treatment cost of about 6.5 ?/m3 AMD has been estimated, for a plant capacity of 10 m3/h AMD inlet flow rate.

In late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65% of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose. El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena. The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9. 5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude As203• A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit. Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5.30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper.

INTRODUCTION Virtually every sector of society in our country feels the impact of tunnels, either through the transportation of water, commodities, or people. The economic implications are staggering. The Committee on Rapid Excavation (1) reported that during the near future, 1968-1975, underground excavation activity will comprise 946 miles of tunnels (subways: 85 miles; underground urban highways: 123 miles; intercity highway tunnels: 210 miles; water supply tunnels: 528 miles) and 5,119 million tons of crude ore; metals: 874 million tons; nonmetals: 899 million tons; and coal: 3,346 million tons. It is estimated that the cumulative demand for underground excavation in the decade 1970-1979 will be 13 billion dollars for construction-oriented demand and 16 billion dollars for mining-oriented demand. The respective figures for the decade 1980-1989 are estimated at 22 billion dollars and 18 billion dollars. Of the many advantages claimed for tunnels (2, 3, 4, 5) the environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important. Transportation tunnels particularly for rapid transit systems, offer reductions in noise pollution and air pollution while improving aesthetics and optimizing land use (fewer problems of right-of-way and disruption of utilities). Considerable interest has been shown recently in sub-surface construction and mining (6, 7, 8). Recognizing the future demands for tunnels has led to considerable study of methods to improve rates of tunnel advance per day, safety, and the overall economics. "The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. INTRODUCTION Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) south of Dallas, Texas, use to be the site of the Superconducting Super Collider. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, this was a multi-billion dollar project taken on by the U.S. Government for the further advancement of technology, medicine, and science. Major components of the project consisted of a Linear Accelerator known as the LINAC; three accelerating rings known as the Low Energy Boosters (LEB), Medium Energy Booster (MEB) and the High Energy Booster (HEB); the East and West Campuses where the Inner Reactor Halls would have been located; and the 87 km (54 mile) main collider tunnel. Unfortunately, this all came to an end on December 6, 1993, with the termination of the project due to the Government's cancellation of funds. This paper will deal with the two of the underground contracts before the termination. These two contracts were the 1122 contract which ran from N25 to N40 and the 1130 contract which ran from N40 to N55. (See figure 1) The 1122 contract was awarded to us in July of 1992 and consisted of the excavation and support of six (6) shaft varying in diameter from 5.5 m (18 feet) to 8 m (26 feet) and ranging from 39.6 m (130 feet) to 61 m (200 feet) deep and the driving of approximately 13,100 m (.43,000 If.) of main collider tunnel. INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. The North Shore Inline Interceptor, Phase IA tunnel is a 8,550-meter (28,000-ft) interceptor tunnel currently being constructed by Traylor Bros./Frontier-Kemper, Joint Venture, using a 9.8-meter (32-ft - 4-in) diameter Robbins tunnel boring machine (TBM). This tunnel is being driven in Silurian age dolomite approximately 91.5 m (300 ft) below ground surface. Significant water inflows were encountered when the tunnel drive penetrated the thinly-bedded Waubakee Formation. Flow increases approaching 0.75 cu m per min per 30 m of tunnel (200 gpm per 100 ft) have occurred in this formation. After driving approximately 2,285 m (7,500 ft) of tunnel (200 m full face in the Waubakee Formation), total flows exceeded 12 cu m per min (3,200 gpm) with about 5.7 cu m per min (1,500 gpm) entering the tun¬nel from the 200 m (600 ft) of exposed Waubakee Formation. Additional water control measures consisting of increased pumping capacity, increased water treatment capacity, surface grouting ahead of the tunnel, grouting ahead of the tunnel face and panning to improve the working environment for installation of tunnel support, were implemented to deal with the large water inflows. Currently (January 24, 1989), 3,400 m (11,000 ft) of tunnel has been driven, total water inflows are in the range of 11.7 cu m per min (3,100 gpm) with only 6.8 cu m per min (1,800 gpm) inflow from about 1,220 m (4,000 ft) of tunnel driven full face through the Waubakee Formation.

Pumice and volcanic cinder are volcanic rocks characterized by a cellular structure. They are formed as gases (primarily water) dissolved in molten rock, or magma, exsolve to generate a froth that cools and solidifies into rigid foam. The cells or bubbles are referred to as vesicles and they range in size from a few thousandth of a millimeter to several centimeters. Due to their vesicular character, both pumice and cinder have lower density and higher porosity than most other rock types, and, as the vesicle walls are broken, sharp cutting edges are continually generated. These properties are the basis for their commercial value as lightweight aggregates, insulators, absorbents, and abrasives. There is a certain imprecision in the terminology applied to volcanic products, reflecting to varying degrees the diversity of volcanic rocks, the relative youth of volcanology as a distinct field of study, and customs and practices of commercial trade. In general terms, pumice is light colored (white, gray, pink, pale yellow, or brown) and highly vesicular, usually with vesicle walls that are visibly glassy. Many pumice fragments are light enough to float on water. Pumice is readily cut by steel tools and some can be crushed by hand. Individual pumice fragments may range from 1 or 2 m in one dimension to c1 mm. Commercially, finer fragments are called pumicite or volcanic ash. In volcanology the term ash refers to any fragment c2 mm in size regardless of its composition. Cinder, or scoria, is dark colored (black, red, brown) with thick vesicle walls that appear dull or stony and that may exhibit iridescence. Cinder typically is heavier than pumice and has a higher crushing strength. In volcanology the term scoria refers to dark vesicular material throughout a wide size range while it is common commercial practice to use scoria for larger fragments (usually greater than 2.5 cm) and cinder for smaller fragments. GEOLOGY Composition and Physical Characteristics Most pumice is silicic ranging from 60 to 70% SiO2, that is, dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Pumice of less silicic composition, including basaltic, occurs but it is less common and does not have extensive commercial use. Scoria and cinder are typically basaltic to andesitic with approximately 50 to 60% SiO2. Pumice and cinder may contain phenocrysts of feldspars and various ferromagnesian minerals that crystallized in the magma prior to eruption. Fragments of rock through which the magma has passed may be entrained in the melt and wall rock may be fragmented and admixed during an explosive eruption. Some scoria particles have lithic fragment cores. Phenocrysts and lithic fragments are relatively unimportant in cinder end uses but their presence may be detrimental in certain pumice products. Pumice typically has vesicles <1 mm in size separated by thin walls. Vesicle shapes include irregular, spherical, elliptical, and elongate to the point of being tubular with a silky appearance (Fig. 1). In some pumices, the vesicles are interconnected making the fragments permeable and highly absorbent; in others the vesicles are isolated forming a highly porous but very impermeable pumice. Floating masses of pumice fragments from the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 were reported in the Indian Ocean for up to two years after the eruption. Vesicles in cinder are larger and range from spherical to highly irregular in shape with much thicker walls and abundant interconnections. Scoria and cinder are typically heavier, porous, and do not float. Density and hardness of pumice must be expressed precisely to avoid confusion. Density may refer to the glass itself, the apparent density of the vesicular pumice particle, or the bulk density of pumice in a deposit or in a product. Pumice glass has a specific gravity of 2.5 or more depending on its composition. Pumice fragments typically have a specific gravity of 4.0 and so will float on water, at least until enough vesicles are saturated to cause them to sink. Expressed as density, pumice fragments typically weigh less than 1 g/cm3. Depending on moisture content, particle density, and particle size distribution, the bulk density of pumice typically ranges from 500 to 700 kg/m3. Typical bulk densities of cinder range from 700 to 900 kg/m3 for material used as lightweight aggregate while the bulk density of cinder used for highways and railroad ballast may be considerably higher. Hardness in pumice may refer to the glass vesicle walls, possibly including crystals or lithic fragments, or to the apparent hardness of the particle as a whole, which is more a measure of the strength of the vesicle structure. Pumice glass typically has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. A pumice particle may have a much lower apparent hardness and be easily cut with a knife or steel saw because the vesicle walls break readily. Pumice and cinder are primarily pyroclastic deposits formed as fragmental products of volcanic eruptions. Several classification - systems differing in various details have been proposed for pyroclasts and pyroclastic deposits based on particle size (Fisher, 1961, Schmid, 1981, Cas and Wright, 1988). Generally, particles >64 mm are referred to as blocks or bombs depending on their shape. Particles between 64 mm and 2 mm (4 mm in some schemes) are called lapilli and smaller particles are called ash. These names may be modified by compositional terms, for example pumice lapilli or scoria lapilli. Most commercial deposits are composed of fragments in the lapilli size range. In the United States, pumice fragments having one dimension of 5 cm or more are legally defined as block pumice. The procedures for acquiring pumice from federal land are determined in part by this definition and are described in a later section.

Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman&apos;s trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Pine Point Mines is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, about 500 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta (figure 1). Lead-zinc ore is found in numerous localized deposits along a generally east-west trending reef of Devonian dolomite, about 5 miles south of Great Slave Lake. A pumping-test program was carried out in 1968 to guide the design of dewatering systems for several open pits that are partially or wholly below the natural ground-water levels. The hydrogeologic conditions, methods employed and results obtained are discussed.

Bureau of Mines researchers developed and tested equipment to measure corrosion rates on a commercial-scale mill. Bench-scale experiments were designed for duplicating ore grinding conditions closely enough that realistic rate determinations can be made in laboratory tests. Rates measured in a laboratory system compared favorably with those measured in the field. Cast steel was found to have corrosion rates in a copper mill and laboratory test cell of 22 and 21 mpy, respectively. Corrosion was found to account for less than 5 pct of the total grinding media wear in the operations studied.

Coal, which was discovered in Utah in 1849, covers about 18% of the total area. Production in 1981 vas more than 14 million tons. However, some Utah coal mines are quite gassy. If longwall face technology is applied, then a release of a high volume of methane may be expected during the mining process. Investigations on methane content have been made by use of an isothermic bubble desorbometer. The desorbable methane content of 5 m3 to 16 m3 of methane per ton of coal mined has been determined.
